Title: Console or Cartridge? What Makes the NTSC Faster on Most Levels?
Post by: GoldenGuy00Heaven on August 18, 2020, 11:55:05 am
Hello friends,

I hope you are all well. I have a question, that I cannot for the life of me find a concrete answer for. If anyone knows for certain, I would jump for joy.

There seems to be a lot of missinformation on the web, or conflicting insights into what the factual differences are between NTSC and PAL N64, both in terms of cartridge and console. I thought you guys would be the number one source for reliable intel on the subject, so any help would be appreciated, thank you.

1. What I would like to know is, can Goldeneye only run at 60hz on an NTSC? Is 60Hz capped to the cartridge, or does the console dictate.

2. I have an unmodded PAL console, which I use for speedrunning purposes, but apparently some people on the reddit forums claim NTSC roms can play on an Everdrive at 60z, attaining an optimal NTSC console refresh rate speed if using the correct crt television? If this is true, could that suggest that the difference may not lie in the console, but rather the regional cartridge.

3. Does running one regional game, on another console region produce the same results. Or is speed capped to cartridge not console. Perhaps the NTSC console is inherantly faster than the PAL console?

Any help would be appreciated. And thanks for taking the time. Anyone with fullproof advice would really make my day. Just deciding which console I should select.

Thanks friends!

1. only the japanese and american versions of goldeneye can run on a ntsc console
2. there are cartridge converters https://youtu.be/HT8O51AqvZ0?t=281 ,basically it frankensteins ntsc (in this case goldeneye) with a pal "donor" cartridge (sm64 in this case), and is able to trick the console into using goldeneye, this is banned because it was found out this slightly sped up the game in real time (but not ingame time), so marc's times with this device were allowed to stand

everdrive is banned because it is not the official cartridge and console, and it opens up possibilities of cheating

3. you pretty much need to do some electronics dark magic to get a pal console to run a ntsc cartridge, so don't do it if you want to speedrun on it

I would try to find an NTSC console on ebay (doesn't have to be from your country but then shipping can get expensive), I'm sure you can ask people on the elite discord if you need help with this
(also they can help you find a good display for ntsc if needed)

the main reason NTSC is better is because of the FPS (there's a few exceptions where PAL is better like Train and Jungle)

Thank you for the response.

I appreciate you taking the time to answer. In truth, I have been considering buying a NTSC for some time, so I think I'll take your advice. Recently, I managed to purchase a second hand Sony Trinition crt tv and it hugely improved my times on PAL.

Before, when I was using a modern LCD, I only had 3 failed Dam Agent 53's. I've been using this new Sony Triniton for only a few days, and have already exceeded that by 4. I'm just wondering whether the leap to NTSC will be the defining factor.

I heard NTSC was up to a second shaved off for every minute in-game, but I'm unsure on that.

Thanks for your response buddy! I really appreciate it. I had two failed 55's Dam agent runs today, quit-outs at the final platform, so a PAL 53 is right around the corner I hope.

Thanks again.

If it's a Trinitron, it'll likely be able to do NTSC (look up the model number and look for a manual pdf online if you wanna check to make sure)
Yeah, PAL 53 is definitely much harder, only 2 people have gotten it on 1.2 and PAL, and both of those people went on to become goldeneye point champions, and still a lot less on 2.x pal than 2.x ntsc, you could cake it on NTSC tbh

That sounds like a misquote. We usually say you save one second for every minute of Lookdown in Goldeneye. This is not the same for version differences.

I tried to do Pal dam 53 2.2 for ages on a LCD tv but eventually it broke me! Started running again after a break using a ntsc J console with the J cart and got 53 after a pretty short grind. I used to think that the Lag wasn't too bad but after playing crt its astounds me the difference in play. I found a J console on uk ebay for like 15 quid or something, right time right place I guess.

The only downside is the black and white output due to the CRT only doing 50hz, but I think it helps with me focus on my runs due to the monochrome and I can record in colour so all good :)

The speed difference from Pal to NTSC is soooooo apparent once you switch!

Thank you Alka Maass for the information. Yes, after careful research through the links provided, I believe this Triniton model is NTSC approved.

I really appreciated your help!

Also, thanks for your message Flicker. I believe your right, I stand corrected. I'm pretty sure that statement was lookdown per min, as opposed to general speed equivalence between versions.

Just so you guys know, I purchased an NTSC USA Console & USA Goldeneye cart today. It comes with a step down converter, but apparently, I can use a PAL power pack as I'm in the UK. Posted another potential 53 on PAL today so I feel on NTSC this is just a matter of time.

Lastly, watertemplefiend, great job on getting 53! I here the difference is pretty extreme, when your initially so used to PAL.

Will post if I get the 53 friends and neighbours! May the Goldeneye gods speak kindly to your scores!

yes, use an n64 power brick that is for your region's power specifications

there is no reason to convert a US plug for usage in the UK when you can just use a power brick that is for UK
