You played Caverns 00A without any body armor.
You had to strafe around the satellite building on Surface 2 SA.
-
We used Windows Movie Maker
-
You had to kill Jaws on Aztec.
-
You played the game with one controller only
We used AIM getfiles
-
0:38 Cradle 00A and 0:44 Depot SA were great times.
-
Wouter J was king of the GE world and it took me forever to get Dam A 0:55
Yea I been around since like 2002 and I still have Runway A 0:24 ROFL. Atleast I have Dam 54 now. :D
-
The only one recording WR times on VHS which submitted Facility 1:04 OOA to Nintendo Power? magazine who said the time was impossible as their game testers achieved 1:25 thus not receiving the GOLD 007 controller as 1:04 was the fastest posted submitted (video to boot) time all others were picture proof...yawn :rollin:
-
Had to make our own timespages and upload them to geocities.
-
you had to AIM modestyouse if you wanted the rankings updated after you got a PR
-
You had to wait for a specific day of the week to see your untied on the rankings. If it was slayed or beaten by then, too bad. :kappa:
-
You really hoped the new WR was on a short level because downloading a new Control vid would take 40 hours.
(And the video wouldn't be posted til three months later anyway.)
-
Finally unlocking all cheats and finding out by checking online that all your times are trash. The few videos that are available to download are times by BB and WJ and it takes forever just to find out that the quality isn't great either. Your reference is an outdated website called SpeedDemosArchive because speedrunning is still an obscure thing and you only know about the most centralized database and haven't heard of a "GoldenEye community" of any kind.
-
Picture proof was good enough.
Dam 53 was a BBDB time.
1.1 was cool.
Depot 26 was worth points.
You had killer music for your PR vids.
-
The game was fun and intriguing. :)

ah yes my man thank you - Not that it isn't intriguing today however totally feel you on this

yeah totally feel you on this as well - Eliters these days will never know how hard completing caverns OOA was for the times we acquired WITHOUT BA
Surface 2 A and SA brought that up today in stream via the "old" grenade strat
-
We used the boards instead of irrelcord :nesquik: Or perhaps i just suffer from Grumpy Old Person Syndrome, am not hip enough and glorify the past.

EZBoard
Yuku
Angelfire

You would patiently have to wait anywhere between 2 months and 1.5 years to watch videos of "fresh" Boss untieds.

We'd play GE Multi til the sun came up, and it was the most fun we'd ever have at a meet. (VA 2007).
Multi has been dead since 2012 :D

lmao
Back in my day, streets 112 was just a pipe dream.
-
You had one friend who'd camp on the body armor in that hallway under the ramp in Temple, preventing you from ever being friends again.
-
Bought the game new and had no idea any community existed for a long time so amongst my small group of friends who played it..
Unlocking the invincibility cheat was an almost mythical badge of honour and anyone who had it was assumed to have cheated.
I refused to believe my mate Dave had once beaten Trev through the first door of caverns.
1.1 was king
Nobody quite understood what it was that caused most train 00 runs to fail. To this day I don't think it's mentioned anywhere that hitting Xenia is necessary!
Statue was an unintelligible maze that everyone hated.
The owner of the console got to play as Bond in multi if they chose. More than 4 of you? Loser passes controller over.
Aztec seemed like a huge spike in difficulty and felt borderline unfair.
Everybody assumed the game ran better with the expansion pack. Not sure why.
Always used the tank in streets (never occurred running was quicker)
Where are all these guards coming from on Bunker 2 00??!!
In multi it was VERY bad form to shoot someone unarmed.
Screen watching was encouraged! It was considered a viral tactic in multi. If you weren't keeping an eye on where the other players were that was your loss!
Finally, a few years later finding the wr times for ge online and being in absolute disbelief at this WJ guys times.
Good thread for the oldies like me, nice little trip down nostalgia lane so thank you!

it was impossible to not tape over a time in your 3h VCR tape window

Thank you Ace wholeheartedly agree on this one - Apparently I had done this on my Facility OOA 1:04 time however never knew until whomever uploaded the VHS run =( - I wish I was a better editor of VHS or knew what I was doing on cutting in times then at 15 lol
Had the duel VHS in the tv screen if I remember correctly
-
Back in my day, my friend and his cousin would say things like this during multiplayer:
"I have a pp7, you only have a pp6!"
"Yeah right Jimmy, you have a pp3, I've seen it!"
"I have a silver pp!"
"Well I have a gold pp!"
I remember them "strafing" natalya and reading her dialogue in a falsetto voice too. "James, you were wonderful!" (must have been on agent)
We were 11 years old in a small town, okay?! We didn't know any better! Anyone else have really immature goofballs for friends, playing as kids?

Omg dude every one of these was like a train shot straight to the feels. You said everything I wanted to say haha
Also, I still say Aztec is a massive spike that borderlines unfair. That level gives me a hard time to this day on SA & 00 (I can't figure out the glass door strat lol).
Only one I'd add: we bought unofficial strategy guides and studied them religiously. I mean I did anyway haha still got mine too. The one with the blue cover, one of my first guides and I was obsessed with studying it.

Back in my day, Aztec 00a 2:49 by Sterling Neblett was the pinnacle of GE speedrunning.

Thanks Matt I'm blushing - With no youtube/videos to go by or vast community to toss ideas around at least not like todays collective ideas from the community thats been built
Even discoveries like the cycling of the weapons wall warp is exempt from usage in the new strats which was one of the most interesting "tricks" found in the game back then
Also no more introduction to the powerful OOA Jaws in the new WR strats who happens to be one of the unique special actors within the game (2 AR33's like a boss!...never to be seen again in a WR run quite sad) - It was a rush in that era at 16 yrs old for sure #AztecOOA #249 #oldschoolvideoWR #backinmyday

GE was fun
