Title: The full story of Marc's original Caverns Agent 1:01

Since Marc has made a come back to Caverns Agent to Untie 1:00, i thought it would be cool to tell the story of his original Caverns Agent 1:01, some people already know the story but there's also been some misinformation about the run.
I'm doing this post for conservation of history and i do this also in the objective to bring rare, hard to find & normally unavailable information to the whole community in the most accurate way possible.

There's not much information about Marc's thought about Caverns Agent 1:01 before he untied it, appart from this forum post (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=855.msg347078#msg347078).

On July 3rd 2011, Marc Rützou Untied Caverns Agent 1:01.
He never mentionned on the forums that he was even going for the time or that had had even duped 1:02, so this was a big surprise to many people.

This is a screenshot from Marc's Depot 00A 0:51 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C0uphph41Rw), he had this picture as part of his stream layout.
And if we look closely, we can see that this is the original Caverns Agent 1:01 endscreen, and with this (for people like me who never saw the run) we have the guarantee that it was originally achieved on NTSC, and not on NTSC-J like his 1:01 (2)

"2.2, 3:0 ratio, flawless strafing except a small .1 stuck (if even that) near the drone, very sweet ending warp. Took about 13-15 hours, had around 40 102's.

100 is possible with the right boost ratio, but anything less than 100 hours for that would be lucky lol. Even if you get the boosts, you still need to get boosted past the drone wich is kinda rare and nail the insane lift warp. 101 was definitely one of the easier untieds atm and i'm suprised nobody really went for it. It's going to get tied by a handful in the future i'm sure."

I also learned the way the boost happened on his original 1:01 : One at the start + two in the tunnel, to this day this 1:01 is completely unique in the way it was achieved, since no other 1:01 has been achieved with boosts like this.

Axel Z posts on the forum the June 2011 proof call (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=16193.msg362248#msg362248), for some reason, Marc's 1:01 is featured in that proof call instead of the July 2011 proof call.
The 1:01 was verified and PROVEN, so it did count as proof (contrary to what might have been said, the 1:01 was never backrolled because the quality was so bad even for Marc 2011 standards).
The run was pointed out by a few people at the time to be in bad quality, but it didn't go further than that.

2012 - 2013
Marc starts expressing his desire to replace his old 2010 - 2011 crappy quality videos with dupes using the current recording equipement that he had available at the time : https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=855.msg382047;topicseen#msg382047

This was a nice initiative from Marc, except that he was deleting the original videos instead of just leaving them available for historical purposes.
And he was even sometimes deleting old PR videos without any intentions to record dupes since he had already improved thoses PRs.

Goose creates a legendary forum thread called "Derek Clark's "opinion" on Berube's Dam 53 (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20005.msg416122#msg416122)", attempting to get Dan Berube's controversial claimed Dam Agent 0:53 removed from the rankings.
After expressing his opinion about Dan's 0:53 (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20005.msg416295#msg416295), Marc receives a spicy response (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20005.msg416301#msg416301) from Dan himself.
And then Logan "The Shadow" West, made THIS POST (https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20005.msg416300#msg416300), pointing out that some of Marc's and Clemens times that passed proof back then, are now violating the current proof policy. The consequences to this post would be cataclysmic.
Marc's response to this was the decision to remove from the rankings every single time he had recorded in bad quality on NTSC in the objective to later dupe them in good quality : https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20005.msg416312#msg416312

Marc starts deleting all of his old NTSC times recorded in bad quality (i need to specify here, he deleted the times, not the videos, the videos are still available on his youtube at this point).

Marc removed a total of 21 PRs including 7 World Records two of which he had untied. The rankings must have looked insane.
A few hours after thoses events took place, Jimbo froze Marc and reposted his times (but forgot to post his 9 former PR times that he also deleted).
So after that Axel Z came in, and reposted the rest of the missing Marc times and linked all of his (still available at the time) videos.

Only hours after having attempted to delete his times, Marc ends up deleting the following videos instead

Only one of the videos that got deleted was able to be found back immidiately since it was already available on The Elite youtube channels, the rest of the videos would be either re-uploaded later or lost.

Dam SA 1:16 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=drkWYTncM0A) - Uploaded by The Elite on August 17th 2012 so the video was never lost, only the original upload on Marc's channel is lost.

In the middle of a conversation on The Elite discord, Ace randomly drops this screenshot

We now know that the title of the original youtube video of Marc's Caverns 1:01 was "Marcus Stryker - Goldeneye 007 - Caverns Agent 1:01 [TWR]" "TWR" wtf ?

So it looks like that on June 26th 2014, Ace downloaded Marc's Caverns Agent 1:01 twice but he claims that he only had the start of the video saved,

According to Ace while downloading the video, his internet crashed. Pretty unbelievable knowing that he could have just tried downloading it again and again until it worked, but he tried twice and gave up, we were that close to get the full vid.

But at least for the first time in more than a year, people were able to at least watch the start of the original Caverns Agent 1:01

After some discussion in late October 2016 on the forums about Marc's timespage situation, it was decided to remove all of his times with missing videos from the rankings.
And so on November 7th 2016 the following times were removed :

I didn't knew about thoses 2013 re-uploads by AZ until i made research for this post, the re-uploads linked to Marc's page on the rankings are re-uploads from Jono from when thoses 2013 Axel Z vids where first re-discovered. I suspect that there are more of them around, possibly some that haven't been seen for years, i always found it strange that Axel saved a bunch of Marc's vids, but didn't saved his Frigate Agent 0:23 or Caverns Agent 1:01, two of his most significant PRs, so to anybody who has access to AZ's channel, this is definetly worth checking.

FUN FACT
Even though for years the initals for Caverns Agent started out like this : DCLSRIDC / You could still see their original appearance including Marc's initials in Wodahs's 1:01 video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eVx8usRfr98).
And on Wodahs' 1:30 video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pqlyh2gsnyU), we can also see this set of initals and all of the 1:01's playing at the same time, except Marc's of course.

During his Silo Agent 0:59, Marc would every now and then throw some random attempts at Caverns Agent, on one session he played it seriously and caked 1:01 i a bit more than 1H, earning 100 dollars in the process.
This was also Marc's first JAP 1:01
And finally the time was back on the rankings with the original date, July 3rd 2011.

So here's a quick summary of the history of the original Caverns Agent 1:01
03 July 2011 - Time is achieved, recorded, posted to The Elite and to Youtube
26 June 2014 - Ace downloads the start of Marc's 1:01
17 January 2015 - Marc removes Caverns Agent 1:01 from the rankings
18 January 2015 - Jimbo freezes Marc and posts his 1:01 back on the rankings
18 January 2015 - Marc deletes the Caverns Agent 1:01 youtube video along with a bunch of other videos
01 October 2016 - Ace uploads the start of Marc's Caverns Agent 1:01
07 November 2016 - Marc's Caverns Agent 1:01 is removed from the rankings, crediting Clemens with having achieved 1:01 as an untied lol
15 February 2019 - Marc duplicates 1:01 on JAP, finally ending this whole saga and getting his untied back.

There could still be informations out here that i missed.
So far the best way to describe to run to somebody who haven't seen it is to show the actual start of the run (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX7p3wd0tYU) (since that bit still exist) and then i'm guessing the original 1:01 probably looked similar this run (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RjH7M6o-AeE) from 2010, and then the only thing we have left is a crappy picture of Marc with the endscreen. This run to this day like a 30% recomposed puzzle, it's fascinating.
If i missed anything or this post need any correction it will do the necessary readjustments.

Couldn't the title have been changed at some point between the record being tied and the attempted download?

No because other records he untied and that got tied do have the title still saying [UWR], like his B2 23

I remember doing the proof call later than usual since I was in the US on holiday (and also meeting up with Jimbo) at that time. This is the reason I chose to include everything up to July 8th in the June proof call, including the 1:01.

Trust me; I would have uploaded and linked the Cav 1:01 and Frig 0:23 ages ago if I had those videos in my possession. The reason: I truly dislike inaccurate rankings. Caverns 1:01 has since been duped by Marc but it is still unfortunate that the original video seems to be lost. Even worse imo is that the Frigate 0:23 video is unavailable and most likely lost forever (0:23 would give Marc a solid point boost and an additional record on the WR database; according to the database, Frigate is the only level Marc never held a WR on). Why I didn't end up with 1:01 and 0:23 in my video collection I do not know/don't remember, but Marc probably did not send them to me as he probably did the other videos.

You are right though in that I might have a few of Marc's original PR videos unlisted on my channel. Videos that (hopefully?) haven't been seen for years. I filtered the videos on my channel to show the unlisted videos only. Everything is pretty much spot on, except a minor detail. In August 2009 i never got a capture card. I used my father's PAL DVD recorder to capture PAL runs on my VHS tapes.

The music used on the original 1:01 will be the same music i will use for my (hopefully) 1:00.

About the [TWR] thing, there are some videos where i simply never got to edit to a [TWR]. I simply edited my Caverns 1:01 to [TWR] after Clemens tied it which didn't take long.

One thing that really hit me upon re-reading this thread, is how directly causational the infamous "Clark's 'opinion' on Berube's 53" thread was in having Marc's Caverns Agent 1:01 lost forever. I actually had no idea the two were connected until reading this thread.

At the time of making that thread, I believed I was fighting the injustice of Boss' Dam Agent 0:53, (arguably the most significant and legendary record in GoldenEye history), from historically being credited with fewer days untied than it really deserved. Yes, I was looking to cause a bit of a stir, some drama & excitement in the community, but the biggest motivator was to get Boss' Dam 53 what I felt it deserved. The consequence this led to was indeed, (after one thing led to another), Marc going a bit silly (who hasn't at some point...), and removing all his videos; thus losing the Caverns Agent 1:01 video forever.

It really goes to show you how there can be unseen consequences of your words or actions, even if you believe what you are doing is 100% justified, (as I believed fighting to remove Berube's Dam 53 was completely justified, at that time). I think perhaps, many people go through life, always assuming they are in the right and are 100% correct in their actions. But this thread serves as just another reminder to me, that that is not always the case. Even further; in this case, perhaps this "quest" to remove Berube's 53 was justified; however by virtue of remedying the "injustice" around Boss' Dam 53, it led to another, undesirable consequence, in the loss of Marc's Caverns Agent 1:01 video.

So thanks for making this thread and giving me another moment to reflect on the strange world we inhabit, and the nature of unintended consequences, even when you believe you're doing the "right" thing. (Ironically, this "moment of reflection" is just another consequence of Joris having made this thread!) ;)

it's actually pretty shocking that some of the biggest controversies in elite history have been caused by such small and seemingly insignificant things (two examples come to my mind but I don't think I can really tell about them in this thread without it becoming too off topic)

Haha, i'm happy you all enjoyed this.
It's a lot of work but i love to do it, if i had to do another one it would be for the original Chicago Agent 0:14 + my journey to tie it (since there are a few interesting facts about my own grind too).
But i don't think it would be nearly as long as this one, the og caverns 1:01 is a time that have one of the most complicated stories out of any other, so the next post are probably going to be not as exiting as this one unfortunately. (unless some insane stuff is discovered, and it is possible).

However, when I first started SpeedLore, I thought "there's no way people are going to find levels like Statue or Egypt interesting, especially when compared to levels with the most insane stories, like Frigate SA, Aztec, etc", but indeed, people did seem to find it all interesting. That's the crazy thing.

Your reaction to the SA shot after the warp was my reaction *pffft* You tease out a story line for every stage it's not about the crazy times or the runners but your storytelling.
