Title: Best Discord alternative?
Post by: RWG on May 31, 2021, 05:08:17 am
My friends,

Imagine one day, that Discord were to go the way of AOL Instant Messenger, MSN Messenger or Blackberry Messenger; or perhaps it simply fell out of favour with the public, like MySpace, Digg or The Chive.

Let's then also assume that you wished to continue having a persistent chat group with your fellow gamer mates, desiring to share chat lines of text, images, video clips, and perhaps even occasionally voice chat or video call.

Which of these apps or programs do you think you would then use?  It is really remarkable, just how many applications and programs are out there, yet we all tend to default to the same handful.  Discord, YouTube, Twitch, Twitter... these seem like the usual bunch for many a gamer, yet there are dozens of alternative options for each platform, which can handle similar things.

Keeping this to only nine options was a challenge, as I could go on for ages about various different platforms that perhaps not many have heard about, or platforms which are only popular in certain regions or nations.  Alternative tech is a truly fascinating realm, so I look forward to seeing the poll results and hearing some comments.

I made an account on Element.io a while back & created a room for the-elite.net. Let me know if you would like an invitation. The UI is decent, it's lightweight and apparently more secure, and there are no silly size limits when uploading files. Unfortunately, it lacks the powerful & reliable voice/streaming capabilities Discord has, although, perhaps, one day we'll get there.

Where's the gather.town option? The likes of Verbsky & Pauliwood would definitely enjoy it.

Indeed. Has the Internet become a smaller place over the years?

We have been using Matrix.org (now rebranded Element.io) since AIM shut down group chats a while back. It is linked up with Discord for those who prefer to use that, but if Discord went away I wouldn't really notice a difference.

Very interesting, I'll get it set up soon and then ask for an invite.  It could be an interesting place, especially in cases where Discord goes down (which admittedly, seems less frequent lately), it could be a good "backup" area.  A failsafe, a meetup point, etc.

I hadn't heard of gather.town, so it's cool to hear of YET ANOTHER platform that may become more prominent in the future. 👍
