Title: speed vs skill
Post by: SiFi on July 05, 2021, 04:24:05 am
being new to speed culture, I considered the question - can you be great at speedrunning without necessarily being great at GoldenEye?

The reverse is certainly true, you can be good at the game without being a runner.

My thoughts are that you basically have to be the best of the best to be a high level speedrunner... is that pretty much the consensus around here?

I don't think so. You can lack some skills as a runner, like certain skills needed to complete Train DLTK, but I can't think of much else.

The reverse is certainly true, you can be good at the game without being a runner.

This guy comes to mind:
https://rankings.the-elite.net/~Manocheese/goldeneye/ltk
IIRC he did some prominent second completions of some of the hardest DLTK levels, and was the second person to get 19/20 completions behind Bozon. His timespage however shows that he is absolutely not a speedrunner (e.g., 75 minutes Caverns, where Bozon has sub 9 minutes). And that he is far, far away from having a shot at Silo DLTK.

yeh i guess the test would be a speedrunner vs regular joe die-hard GE player in multiplayer.

If both competitors had a similar number of hours spent on the game, it would be pretty revealing.

I guess it depends on what you consider to be "good" at the game.

For example, the older speedrunners of the game are more likely to be good at multi since they grew up with it, but might have a hell of a time getting decent times in the modern day.
When T+, Randy and I meet, we've all probably put a few thousand hours into speedrunning the game but didn't really grow up with it, so we can't even find our way around Complex, etc.

Judging skill from multi is difficult because you can only set upright/reverse for everyone instead of individually, and most players are comfortable with only one.

Multi and Singleplayer are completely different bags. The multi veteran would probably win 99% of the time against a good chunk of the Elite. As the above post says, many of us haven’t even played multi in the last 15 years, if at all. That skill isn’t going to translate into caking your way into the top ten in speedrunning though. There’s no way to cheat your way around putting in the time. It’s like any other skill.

Also I doubt that anyone has put in anywhere near the amount of time into multi that the community has put into singleplayer. Coordinating to play a 20 year old game locally with friends that often is a tall order to be sure.

There are patches you can put on Everdrive that put players in multi on Upright - I've got roms for some combinations on mine

yeah its a bit theoretical.

even if the respective hours put into single/multi were comparable it wouldn't be the ideal barometer, but to me it's an interesting concept.

choose levels both are familiar with and 'good' in this instance would be dying the least.

it would be fun to see how the top 20 fared against each other in multi also. maybe that's already happened I don't know.

You're in luck (I think Woody is the only one who wasn't a top 20 player at this time)

hah nice  :rollin:

much more spontaneity, more direct & open use of skills

less luck, less memorisation, less structure

just my thoughts. i would finish dead last

interesting to see though - maybe there is safety in the complete memorisation of missions & levels, when compared with the raw reaction times and open playing field of multi
