Title: Vaccine or NFT? [Word of the Year 2021]
Post by: RWG on November 29, 2021, 04:08:09 am
Amici miei,

It's getting close to the end of the year, 2021 CE, Gregorian Calendar.  As such, typical "end of year" awards, announcements, lists and the like are being circulated.
The "Word of the Year" is an award that dictionary publishers often publish, to create some newsworthiness and publicity for themselves.  Alas, this year, we've seen a couple of dictionaries decide on two different "words of the year".  But which one do you most agree with?  Or would you have chosen another word entirely?

Both Publishers Merriam-Webster (https://www.ctvnews.ca/lifestyle/merriam-webster-chooses-vaccine-as-the-2021-word-of-the-year-1.5685195) and Oxford chose the word "vaccine" as 2021 "word of the year."  Well, Oxford (https://www.msn.com/en-ph/news/other/vax-is-2021s-oxford-word-of-the-year/ar-AAQwRor?ocid=BingNewsSearch) actually chose the more casual, shortened form, "vax", as word of the year.

However, Collins (https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/world/nft-is-collins-dictionarys-word-of-the-year-for-2021-beating-out-crypto-and-cheugy/ar-AAR4IiM?ocid=BingNewsSearch) went a different direction, choosing NFT as their "word of the year."

What's fascinating about these two words, is that they can both be incredibly divisive topics, which is perhaps at least part of why they were chosen.  Some human beings seem to despise vaccines, in particular, the vaccine for the novel coronavirus SARS‑CoV‑2, as well as things that go along with them, such as so-called "vaccine passports"; whereas some other human beings absolutely despite the idea of NFTs (non-fungible tokens), sometimes incorrectly believing that a single NFT transaction uses more electricity than entire nations use in one year's time.

But what do you think should be "word of the year" in 2021?  What was your personal "word of the year?"

For me, no doubt, my "words of the year" are "strange and unusual".

The most significant word for me personally this year is undoubtedly "sick", specifically the phrase "it's just so sick". However, I'd like to give an honourable mention to the word "guillotine", a word I have said to my friends many times with more emotion and feeling than any other word this year. It rolls around in my head constantly, much like the heads that would roll with their use. A second honourable mention to the phrase "Hubristic Fibrosis", coined by Gus during a moment of levity in the SammoSammy Twitch Stream.

As for the general public, vaccine has to be the winner. 95% of conversations I've had with people this year (excluding purely functional conversations for work) have included the use of that word and I'm not even joking or exaggerating. I desperately try to avoid the topic because I am JUST SO SICK of hearing the word. It's not even about the divisiveness, the absurd politicisation of it, the aura of unbridled insanity and evil that begets the topic from all sides. I am JUST SO SICK of hearing that collection of dipthongs. It's like hearing a song on repeat for an entire year. I just want it to stop. Vaccine. Vack-scene. Get it out of my fucking head. I can't even process my own thoughts on the topic anymore because I hate having that word jumping across my synapses. So it wins. NFTs are just going to make some turbonerds turborich.
