Title: Lies (rambling rant)
Post by: SamSim on August 09, 2003, 08:38:00 pm
I dunno. Maybe I'm just incredibly cynical, but there isn't enough proof around.

In fact, there is nowhere near enough proof around. I would say we have roughly one-twentieth of the proof which is really required.

Just because a time is worth "only" 75 points today does not mean it is easy to get. Two years ago, it's possible that that was nearly a world record, and you'd definitely need proof. But now there are a lot of strong players around, enough to fill up the top ranks. A 75 point time used to be within the grasp of a lot of people, if they were prepared to put in the effort, but now you need to be very, very good to get that far. And yet people still feel that they can claim a 75-pointer without proof, and they get away with it, because it doesn't register on our world-record-o-scan. (75 is almost arbitrary. Could've said 80 or 50 or anything.)

It would not be too hard for a played to surreptitiously build his way up to a 60-point average score without having to provide any proof at all.

And another thing. Just because you have, say, a 1:34 worth 90-odd points on tape does NOT mean you can claim slightly superior 1:33 and not have to provide proof.

I think it's because there are too many players joining and competing. Again, call me cynical but I distrust a newcomer who gets WRs within a month or two of joining.

Our proof calls aren't tight enough. In an ideal world, every time would be proved, but that would be stupid. In a slightly more realistic world, every time above 75 points would require a mandatory video being sent in, but this, too is unfeasible because of the sheer logistics involved in receiving around 1400 videotaped runs.

In other words, the level of cheating Perfect Dark Elite is now impossible to monitor. The best we can be sure of are the fastest proven times, and Breckish's 2:43 stunt tells us that we really can't be more than 90% sure about that either.

I do not have access to an updater script, but I would like to move for the creation of a Proven Elite, where people submit only the times they have provided video proof of. It would be a strange-looking page but I think it would at least carry a shred of honesty. Any takers?
