Ace is the only one who's duped 23s, he's done many 23s but I don't think he did any of those either with pp7 for last. I remember him having a vid of him doing the last cam with pp7 in strafe but I don't think he ever completed a 23 that way.

For not playing anything in like 5 years, I still watch a lot of videos.. And it took 5 years for my "max times" to be reached in perfect dark.  Thus I mean to say that I'm really picky on "mistakes," and probably a lot more realistic than many who say a time is close to maxed.  But hot damn Silo 1:30 was nice =0

Ryan, where the heck is your 1:30 vid at?

Anyway, i think i have info on frigate agent that might help people. I am sure most know this and i will look like a goof for mentioning, but ive noticed the faster the hostage taking guards die, the faster the hostages complete. for example, they dont get released till the guards body has disappeared. So what i am saying is, shooting the guards in the chest and having them do the quickest possible death might be a major factor in a fast or slow hostage completion. Also, not shooting the wall at all, only the guards. And as few bullets/as fast as possible.

These are some of the most knowledgable GE players around.  You don't need to say stuff like that because like Mouser said, almost all of us already know it.  You can't get the times we get without knowing things like that.  I would certainly restart if I knew I got a bad death on Frigate A for example, or Control beginnigs.

Wouter is miles ahead of anyone in knowledge.  Jimbo is next or he was in his prime at least and then the other guys like me, Boss, Illu or whoever else has a lot of knowledge too.

good job on 23 I guess whatever and thanks for liking my 130

Basically, the top players have more overall knowledge than the lesser ranked.  I figure for the most part, we all have similar ability overall (near the top at least).  Knowledge is what puts you ahead of the other top players.

Does this mean that the top players whoard their knowledge to give themselves an edge on the other players, or is it something that can't be put into words?

No, I think top players are good/better based on how well they respond to nerves/unpredictable situations, and how consistent they are. Anybody can get any record if they put enough time into it. But, all things being equal, a top player will get it faster: due to their consistency and performance under pressure, they will more likely capitalize on the right run.

I also think it's obvious that knowledge comes from being a top player (and from experience), not the other way around.

What Dan was just able to sum up in a few words is basically why I always thought Silo 112 was a better WR than Dam 117.  Just more unpredictable crap going on you have to deal with but I won't get into details again on that argument.

^Good point. I've always seemed to notice that in the top players' runs, ESPECIALLY Wouter, that you can tell their nerves just don't get to them, even in the end of the most perfect runs that end up an untied WR. I watch wouter's jungle 00A 58 and depot 50, and also caverns 142, and even in the end of the run it's completely smooth just like it's no big deal, even though it's gone completely perfect to that point and he is either one shot from death or one mistake from messing up the speed. I would say you get that from experience, but I've had plenty of experience but I can't say I do as well; you watch my depot 00A 51 and it's noticeably less smooth in the end; obviously I know how nervous I was but someone else could just watch the run and see where my nerves start to kick in. But not for the best players it seems :)

not to brag or anything, but I think silo shows mostly keeping nerves in good runs.  You get a good run going and something totally random will happen like it does in all my silo WRs and good completions.

Other levels that show real "skill" I guess are like, B2, caverns, aztec, train, and other levels where there is a lot of guard randomness you gotta react to, but levels which aren't maxed enough that the reaction itself will cost you the WR.

I dunno, I guess the ultimate example is Wouter's aztec 00 156 when that was the untied WR.  Just the way he controls his nerves and lives those last 30 seconds.

You know, I tend to hate levels with "unpredictable" stuff.  Runway 00A with the new strat is like totally predictable once you know what's going on.  While I can usually handle nerves well, I do not adapt to unexpected stuff well at all. I have a vision in my mind how things should go, and if it ends up being off that much at all, I'll mess up or end up pausing out.  But eventually, my ideal setup will come up and if I don't mess it up, I PR.  This could explain why I don't dupe stuff as much as everyone else.

I am probably the worst person in the elite in terms of nerve, I blew runs so much and could barely handle my controller at the end of my Aztec SA and Caverns 00A 1:52. To say I'm a bad player is horseshit.

I honestly think what makes a better player is how well you master the controls, being able to do like 100 things at a time is huge and the exact reason why I suck at Halo, I can't master the controller.

Lets take luck out of the equation, luck basically relates to playing time, so lets say a bunch of good players play for xxx hours on one level.  Who is going to get the best time?

Well we all can run the same speed, and we've all done every turn perfectly at one point or another.  What it comes down to is both piecing these elements together, and reacting to what we HAVEN'T seen before.  If we're in a level like silo, its much more to do with reactions, but in many many GE levels we are dealing with general speed, turning and shooting, etc.

As I said, we've all done each of these parts perfectly at some point, so who is going to get the best time?  The one who can piece them together the best into ONE run.  I think for 80% of the levels, speedrunning is about consistency, above general ability.  For the other 20%, its about reactions and a lot more of the run has to do with actual ability than the consistency in itself.

Just my idea of why in GE (as well as a game like mario kart), what seperates the top players is consistency above anything else.  What generates consistency?  Well thats up to somebody to answer who knows a lot more about moving fast than I do.
