The Elite's 2008 March Madness Dealie
« on: March 16, 2008, 07:32:00 pm »
Good heavens, it's bracket time!

Yes sir, the greatest playoffs in all of sport are here again- it's college basketball's Big Dance! But which of the 64 teams will come out on top?

As always, we're running an Elite bracket competition at ESPN.com, and everyone's invited. Just start here:

http://games.espn.go.com/tcmen/frontpage

After you log in, pick an entry name (like "Ng's Superpicks!") and then click Create/Join a Group. Do a search for

The Final Four Elite

Our pass, as always, is "elite."

Good luck to all, and let the discussion of which teams wheat feels were snubbed start now!

EDIT - You might have a little trouble joining right now because ESPN's servers are being swamped.  If so, give it a few minutes, or better yet try again later tonight after the swarm dies down some.

Nice, I'll sign up after I do some hardcore thinking.

I'll keep my initial thoughts to myself; a few surprises from the selection committee, and looks like it'll be a really tough year (at least for me) to pick accurately.

I'm hoping to ditch work on Thursday and Friday so I can catch all the action. Work has narcware on the pc's so I'd be unable to check the results until after I got home. Last year Neo dominated the first round and wheatrich came from way back in the pack to correctly predict the Elite Eight up to and including the finals to make it into the top 5 (out of 38).

I know octo and I will be rooting for USD over UConn in the first round.

ugh I picked too safe in this contest I think. Not my normal style.

What should be the best games of the tournament.
Kansas State vs USC. Okay the committee clearly did this one on purpose. (side note--why the hell are almost all the mid majors playing each other? yeesh I'd rather see an arizona vs gonzaga and south alabama vs west virginia then having them all play each other [butler vs zona... etc])

Winthrop vs Wazzu. I love and I mean LOVE the 13's vs the 4's --even more than the 12's vs the 5's this year.

South Alabama vs Butler. Winner's got a fantastic shot at taking out Tenn. (butler pretty much killed them last year in preseason NIT and south alabama is playing... in birmingham alabama--go defacto home games!) I just wish I knew who it was!

Davidson vs Gonzaga Davidson's actually favored.

Drake vs W.Kentucky--Drake as a team concerns me--they've got the talent to easily face Kansas in the 16--and could go down to WKU. Hate teams like this.

St. Marys vs Miami--see committee when you pair mids vs bigs--I've got NO clue who's winning this--it's as close to a coin toss as you can get (in fact line's Miami -1 right now)

Siena vs Vanderbilt--see Vandy as team most likely to lose in round 1 (of the top 5 seeds) in the wheat book of first round upsets.

Those 2's are in big trouble. WVU/Zona match up well vs Duke, South Alabama/But match up great vs Ten, Gtown could be playing a virtual road game vs Davidson

sickens me I won't get butler S alabama--imo that's the best first round game of the tournament.

[side note 2--the women's team actually allows teams to play on their home court in rounds 1/2--and sent all they possibly could there--Purdue's a 9 at home, Stanford a 1 at home, Maryland (a 1) at home, ridiculous]

Davidson is definitely favored in their game; I picked Gonzaga kind of as an upset. It'll appear that I'm playing it safe/picking the favorite to most people, but NO!

nothin' soothes me more than a groove that boosts me
nothin' boosts me more, or suits me beautifully

I agree with most of what you said.  I think the 6-11 matchup has 3 possible upsets whereas I only see 1 likely 12-5 upset.  There is a good chance we see 0 12-5 upsets for a 2nd straight year.  A couple 13-4's are possible with vandy being most likely to go down.  Vandy can't play on the road but they are a decent on neutral courts and just suck on the road.  I think they probably survive Siena although I hope they go down.  I'm not completely done with my bracket yet but I have a few upsets and I don't know who to pick in the WVU/AZ game.  I'd rather not make a pick there since its more than a toss up.

I think the committee did a poor job with seeding quite a few teams.  Some teams were overseeded by 2 or more lines and some teams like butler were just slapped in the face with their seed and location.  I hope butler comes out pissed and takes out s bama and Tenn.  One region where I am most confused is the bottom of the South.  WVU/AZ could take out Duke and Xavier/Purdue/Baylor could all make it 3 rounds or just 1.  Not sure what will actually happen down there.

I dont think WAZZU will lose to Winthrop and I really hope a lot of people pick George Mason over Notre Dame. lol

My Elite bracket is just designed to win the Elite, so it's very cookie cutter, as the name implies. The first bracket I made was much more wild, with a better chance at large-scale success (Clemson as champ, for example). Then for the other 8 brackets, I just used a copy of a previous cookie cutter and altered it so a semi-random high seed went to the Final 4 or further.

I wish I had thought to make a favorite's bracket with one of them.

My bracket is almost complete. I'm still agonizing over a couple of key choices. I hate toss-ups! Usually, I start out well for the first couple of rounds before disaster strikes and ruins my bracket. Maybe I can avoid that this year.

I'm still working on a few pieces of my bracket.  Then I have 8 completely random upset brackets, probably should have used a more systematic approach to cover more ground / be less wild, but I didn't want to take the time.  Then I have a favorites bracket!

I'm in it to lose it!

I'm quite offended that none of these "perfect bracket" contests allow citizens of Florida to participate. Perhaps they feel it would be unfair if a Floridian won by picking teams they didn't intend to pick. After all, I was quite confused as to why Pat Buchanan wasn't in there.

Ok lots to get through and a very slow espn site right now so ill be keeping this brief where possible. Probably lots of spellin mistakes but whatev.

Nates Losers

An aptly name team considering we have Beasley running all the way to the Elite 8 only to lose to Kansas, who are winning it all. Georgia beating Xavier is farcical

Best Pick: Texas CG
Worst Pick: Kansas State E8
Grade: C-

frantic 1

Pretty respectable bracket with a nice mixture of chances and bankers. I dont particularly like UCLA that much but mf has put this together ok.

Best Pick: Pitt S16
Worst Pick: Gonzaga 32
Grade: B+

Lark

A suprisingly safe and normal bracket from Lark. Was really expecting something appalling here.

Best Pick: Duke F4
Worst Pick: West Virginia 32
Grade: B

Ng's SuperBracket

Not too shabby. Again was really envisaging an atrocious set of selections. Texas winning it all is perhaps too over-exciting put I actually dont mind it.

Best Pick: Texas Win
Worst Pick: Saint Josephs 32
Grade: B+

IsThereAGrandTeam

This is a really mixed back. I like the gambles on texas and Pitt but HATE Arizona beating Drake in the E8. Some other odd selections early makes this a bizzare effort.

Best Pick: Pitt E8
Worst Pick: Arizona F4
Grade: D+

Octo's Madness!

Standard North Carolina over UCLA in the final, but Im really struggling to get past Davidson beating Georgetown early.

Best Pick: Pitt E8
Worst Pick: Davidson S16
Grade: B

NOAKEVBO

Wow this is actually a really great offering. Perhaps hurt by too much conservatism in the early rounds, but otherise very solid.

Best Pick: Gtown F4
Worst Pick: West Virginia 32
Grade: A-

packattackUWgotscrewed

Automatic D for all four #1 seeds in the final 4. Really you need to be more imaginative!

Best Pick: Louisville E8
Worst Pick: Butler S16
Grade: D

MMF winning bracket

Another ridiculous bracket with all four #1 seeds making it and very little interesting going on before that.

Best Pick: Arizona 32
Worst Pick: Wisconsin E8
Grade: D-

Dayle's Losers!

Alright, if i see a bracket worse than this feel free to shoot me. I dont know where to start. Is there even ONE #1 seed in the elite 8? Kent St in the F4???? Notre Dame in the championship game???? Connecticut winning it??????????? PLAYOFFS???

Best Pick: Wisconsin E8
Worst Pick: Kent St F4
Grade: F

hovis 1

Some good and bad here - mostly bad. I dont like Memphis to win at all, and both Tennessee and Louisville losing in 32 isnt fun. Nevertheless there is some good imagination and the upsets are somewhat possible - but that many of them?

Best Pick: Purdue S16
Worst Pick: Memphis winner
Grade: C

QB's Cookie Cutter

Look, Im having to sit here grading like 50 brackets and I just dont have time for this kind of nonsense. All 4 #1 seeds in final four?? This thing is so devoid of upsets its ridiculous.

Best Pick: Pitt S16
Worst Pick: Stanford E8
Grade: D

Cyber's picks

The top half of this is ok and then you scroll down and see Davidson and West Virginia in the S16. Lots of Kansas fans in the Elite.

Best Pick: Pitt F4
Worst Pick: South Alabama 32
Grade: C

Matt8000 ftw

Youd figure this would be as bad as Dayles, however its actually alright. Some possible upsets in there that are reasonable although perhaps too much of a stretch.

Best Pick: Tennessee F4
Worst Pick: Wisconsin CG
Grade: B-

Come's Sheet of Integrity

This is fairly average attempt. I like the way its balanced but I just feel that some of the wrong choices were made in terms of the matchups in the Elite 8. Since its a genuine sheet of integrity ill give it a stronger grade than I would were this from someone like Jon.

Best Pick: Pitt F4
Worst Pick: UCLA Win
Grade: B+

Dykstra 1

Marquette in E8 seems a little implausible, but ill give some credit for tempering the desire to push them past Memphis. The Davidson love is silly though

Best Pick: Louisville F4
Worst Pick: Davidson S16
Grade: B-

mikerspd MADnessest

This isnt so bad. I disagree with some of the selections but I can see where its coming from. I dont really like UCLA making the championship game but Id favour them over Memphis at least.

Best Pick: Wisconsin F4
Worst Pick: South Alabama 32
Grade: B+

Topes

Hmm some early upsets make this a weird bracket to look at. Butler, USC and BYu all in the E8? I think thats being way too optimistic!

Best Pick: Texas F4
Worst Pick: BYU E8
Grade: C

Kessler 1

Alright another chump with all four #1 seeds in the F4. Not only that but we have 3 #2 and 1 #3 in the E8. And its the WRONG #3 to pick out of all of them too. You really need to pull yourself together!

Best Pick: UNC Win
Worst Pick: Memphis CG
Grade: D-

Wiff's lucky picks

This would have been a decent bracket but for some silly stuff in the early rounds. I enjoyed George Masons performances better in 24. Basketball just isnt his thing. And Duke winning it?

Best Pick: Texas F4
Worst Pick: George Mason 32
Grade: c+

wheatrich's invitational

This is a really really disappoinign effort. It looks pretty near the end but the first 3 rounds are just horrible and wheat will be way out of contention before this has even started.

Best Pick: Texas CG
Worst Pick: South Alabama S16
Grade: D

darthrob64

If theres any bracket here for which the predicted points of 1680 is accurate, its this one. Top to bottom this is probably the most astute submission with the perfect blend of favourites progressing and upsets. Theres no doubt had this bracket been available for others in the 'Copy Picks' box that a lot of people would have been hard pressed to pass up the opportunity to benefit from the wonderful insight on display here.

Best Pick: Duke F4
Worst Pick: UCLA E8
Grade: A

AnderssonBallers

Ok Axel knows absolutely nothing about college basketball but I actually dont mind his bracket. The Gonzaga, Oklahoma and Oral Roberts stuff is a little excessive

Best Pick: Tennesee CG
Worst Pick: Stanford F4
Grade: B

wtf...is this basketball?

Wtf... is this a serious bracket? Ok its not quite as bad as Dayles but is getting there. Marquette in the final? Indiana, Baylor and Davidson in the E8? God at least Kansas are winning it.

Best Pick: Kansas win
Worst Pick: Oral Roberts E8
Grade: F+

Thira's Ownage

You know what, theres a lot of off the wall stuff in here but I like the way its been applied. This is a bracket that could actually win it all in an odd kind of way.

Best Pick: Clemson E8
Worst Pick: Winthrop 32
Grade: A-

*Whoooooooooooosh*

Not a lot of Gtown love in the Elite it seems. This would have been a nice bracket but them Mississippi went and ruined it. Kentucky to S16 is a stretch.

Best Pick: Gtown F4
Worst Pick: Mississippi St F4
Grade: C+

D12

Another four #1 seeds chump. And some silly early upsets too. Get it together guys!

Best Pick: Butler E8
Worst Pick: Boise State S16
Grade: D

BrewCity Bracket

This is ok. Im kinda seeing the same bracket a lot now. Its nicely balanced though. Could do well.

Best Pick: Pitt F4
Worst Pick: UCLA winner
Grade: B+

Elite's Worst Bracket

Wow he wasnt kidding. Gonzaga to the F4? Vanderbilt to the E8? Connecticut to the finals? Anyone finishing below this seabracket really is a complete loser.

Best Pick: UNC win
Worst Pick: Gonzaga E8
Grade: C-

Lavery 1

Cry. Why....why???? Out of all the teams in the lower half of the East you pick St Josephs to make it to the E8? This bracket is just beyond hope.

Best Pick: UNC Win
Worst Pick: UNLV S16
Grade: E

Goose

Yet another four #1 seeder. CMON GUYS. Use your knowledge properly. Stretch your brains! YOu can do it! (next year)

Best Pick: Pitt S16
Worst Pick: Marquette E8
Grade: D

Woll

THis is alright. Xavier love a bit too far but a reaonable blend of the sublime and the ridiculous. Could be a dark horse

Best Pick: Wisconsin F4
Worst Pick: Xavier CG
Grade: B+

Saw DKK at a lemonparty

I dont know whats worse here. St Marys in the E8 or Belmont in the S16. Actually back the fun bus up. American over Tennessee? Ill grad up just because that made me lol.

Best Pick: American 32
Worst Pick: Belmont S16
Grade: B

OD Wins

Really poor selection here packed full of all the wrong upsets and a comical choice of winner. I dont know what they put in those dog biscuits. oh wait..

Best Pick: Louisville F4
Worst Pick: Wisconsin winner
Grade: D+

Poteau Jedi

This is nates second bracket and probably the stronger of the two.

Best Pick: Kansas State not in E8
Worst Pick: Texas not in CG
Grade: B-

Kingers Perfect Picks

DING. So someone did use copy picks? Wow this is what Im talking about right here! In it to win it PDO!

Best Pick: Villanova S16
Worst Pick: Oklahoma S16
Grade: A-

Mike 1

This was ok i suppose. South kinda ruins it a bit but it has potential to do well.

Best Pick: Butler S16
Worst Pick:  Stanford F4
Grade: B

PSK

Shoot me now. THREE #1 seeds being kicked off by #16s? And the one making it through Memphis?? Are you kidding me? Miami winning it all? Are there enough letters in the alphabet? This might be an elite first grade!

Best Pick: Drake F4
Worst Pick: American E8
Grade: G

PYLemire

I really dont like some of the early upsets and Butler to F4 seems too much

Best Pick: Kansas CG
Worst Pick: Cornell S16
Grade: C-

jon forced me to do this

Next time Jon needs to keep his mouth shut so I dont have to put up with horrible entries like this. i dont think theres actually a single lower seed win here other than a couple of first round #9s. Pure fantasy

Best Pick: NC Win
Worst Pick: UCLA CG
Grade: E

MisterGuru

This isnt as bad as it first looked to me. I can go with this to some extent although taking Wisconsin to the championship game was perhaps too much.

Best Pick: Texas win
Worst Pick: South Alabama 32
Grade: B

Boss

This is a reasonably well put together bracket that does have some potential to succeed. I like the thread thats been woven here and dare I say another dark horse.

Best Pick: Tennessee win
Worst Pick: West virginia 32
Grade: B+

So the grades are a direct indication of which brackets most closely match your own?

I got a D wow, Im amazed. I just closed my eyes and clicked randomly on the screen for 12 minutes, then I opened them and saw my bracket was completed.

Thanks for the writeup shep. You put a lot of work into it. I picked UCLA to win it all but I'm having second thoughts since star center, freshman Kevin Love is reportedly lame.

I'm attempting to put together a program like I did last year that shows the standings after each round, based on total possible points as opposed to current points. I just need to input every game from every person and figure out how to run it again.

Good luck to everyone!

Excellent work on those writeups Shep!

And what's this, Nate snuck in two brackets? Afraid that's an automatic disqualification.

So do we compare the predictions to the results at the end and see who's brackets outperformed and underperformed?

Anyone that tries to talk NCAA Basketball with me knows I absolutely LOATHE college basketball and this damned March Madness nonsense. In other words, I'm honored by shep's F showing that I don't even give enough of a shit to make the "easy" picks!

I don't see many upsets happening this year. The matchups are generally pretty favored for the favorite, and the only team I see possibly stopping a 4 #1 final 4 is Texas.

Edit:
I just counted and I have more upset picks that you!

Shep's grade on his own bracket
Best Pick: Duke F4
Grade: A

Enough said. Funny in the fantasy game I've done the best here is the one I don't do grades for... (and won't--Kansas UNC and Texas are all great picks but I really don't like anyone else)

Don't get why Salabama in the round of 16 is terrible and butler is great. Butler's all but playing AT S Alabama (and from what I've seen from Butler they aren't as good as last year). Take locations into account. Wish I saw more than one S. Alabama game to evaluate correctly though. (I get to watch it yay!) [even before that duke outing I was pretty well convinced WVU was going to beat them...]

If Texas doesn't win they really should crush themselves--it's so setup for them till the CG (Kansas/North Carolina are great winning picks too I had a tough time picking a winner there) Any of those three are good picks but I like the guys trying to win the 10k too. Why not give it a shot--going to be impossible picking all top seeds.

Wheat's bets
Texas 16/1 to win NCAA tournament Took the big 12 at 7/2 as well to cover Kansas.

Actually Belmont was almost the perfect team to get an upset--because they shoot mostly 3's. Any team like that was probably worth a ML play.

(sigh winthrop was tied at half--and egads at winthrop 2nd half, kent state 1st half, and whatever the hell that was out of Cornell and really whatever the hell that was that UCLA played--that performance probably should earn a demotion of the whole conference out of D1)

The biggest thing I keep noticing is just how stupid some of these teams are. They get the "I'm going to shoot the ball no matter what" in their head and force some shots that should make a high school coach strangle a freshman. I'm so glad I'm not a coach I'd kill some kid. (one vs four? no problem!) nobody on my team under the basket not an issue! triple teamed=shoot the ball! It really sickens me at times.

So I'm even rooting against my bracket--wheeee.

Darn right, K-State. Hey, Walker carried the team in the first half, Nate. I swear, everybody forgets about Bill Walker.

SAN DIEGO! Pretty happy about that one.

[23:14] NgamerAtWork: I'd have to think that, according to just seeds,
[23:15] NgamerAtWork: we've seen the least upsetting day in tourney history followed by the most upsetting
[23:15] NgamerAtWork: in terms of R1 days
[23:15] ReIigion LOL: or maybe your just bad at preds!
[23:15] NgamerAtWork: I'm not basing this on my preds, dummy!
[23:15] NgamerAtWork: I clearly said, based only on seeds
[23:16] NgamerAtWork: ok, I'll tally today's upsets
[23:17] ReIigion LOL: with all these upsets, at this rate nates going to have the best bracket!
[23:18] NgamerAtWork: there would be 36 "seeds" worth of upsets today
[23:18] NgamerAtWork: assuming Nova pulls this out
[23:19] NgamerAtWork: compared to 6 "seeds" of upsets yesterday
[23:19] NgamerAtWork: yeah, those have to be records

Hurrah for Nova and Arkansas and Miss St making my day a little less disastrous!

You guys should be all embarrassed than a bracket which shep gave a D is beating you. You all fucking suck! (other than Woll and Tyler who own obviously.)

Here are the standings after round 1. These are sorted in the order of Total Points Possible. I didn't find anyone that was mathematically eliminated but that's sure to change after round 2.

Not sure why my WVU > Duke pick was criticized on my "bracket analysis". Duke is overrated and is very inconsistent in the early rounds of the tourney. After watching them suck with Belmont, I liked my pick even more. Surprised only 2 other ppl in this pool had the pick.

its because no one here cares about NCAA basketball enough to know which teams are good or not. All this is is randomly selecting stuff based on numbers. Anyone who thinks elsewise is either Tyler, Woll or they suck.

Next time I get such a big feeling on an upset (siena, WVU) I'm betting the max. I'm such a nit with $ and it really costs me.

With the first half of round 2 completed it's tight at the top of the leaderboard with Tapani the untied leader with 380 points. We have the first three people eliminated but for everyone else, upsets can happen so everyone else still has a chance.
