Yay Goose! That's 3 new top 250 films! Can't believe you had not watched Forrest Gump until now. Also, you're now ahead of my little sister on the top 250 ranks

Alright, so on Sunday I watched Nick & Norah, American Beauty and Fast Times, in that order.  On Monday I watched The Usual Suspects and then Forrest Gump.  I will critique them in another order however.

The Usual Suspects (1994)

Forget The Dark Knight; The Usual Suspects is the most overrated movie of all time.  This movie was essentially pure trash.  The story was below average, and then in the end we find out it was entirely invented.  The twist, like Fight Club, and unlike Saw, is presented terribly, however, unlike Fight Club, this twist renders the entire film to have been pointless.  The movie is basically Kevin Spacey lying for 90 minutes.  Great.  Slow start, disinteresting plot, just an overall garbage movie.

It isn't the worst film I've ever seen though, Old School for example is worse.

Rating: 3.7/10

Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982)

An alright highschool comedy.  It has nothing on Mean Girls or Breakfast Club but it's a lot better than most.  There are some deep, interesting issues brought up in the film and the characters are all reasonable.  There aren't many stupid cliches used in the story, though the characters are slightly so.  A decent film.  Wouldn't go out of my way to watch again.

Rating; 7.0/10

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist (2008 )

I remember QB rating this highly in his top 20 list of 2008 and prior to that I had wanted to watch this film, so after that moment I knew I had to watch it.  The movie truly is excellent.  There is something so beautiful about two strangers falling in love, which this film exposes incredibly well.  Not only this, but the way Nick's friends, Nick and Norah see the world is the way I believe everyone should see the world.  They are just out trying to have a good time, and that is what they do.  It is truly beautiful.  This film also is a great example of a film which was entertaining and compelling to watch despite not being a high concept film (something The Dark Knight failed at.)  There is barely any plot in this film... but who cares?  It is nice to watch regardless and we love being on the ride with the characters.  This is what movies should be all about.  My only regret is not watching this movie with a girl.

Rating; 8.4/10

Forrest Gump (1994)

A very interesting film.  It was a tad strenuous to watch at some points but overall the story is simply beyond words.  The ending beautifully encapsulates a truly epic story.  We can really feel with Forrest and can't help but to love him throughout the movie.  Forget Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight, Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump is the best acting performance I have ever seen.  The only problem with this film is that it's a bit slow at some points.  Other than that, it is perfect.  I do think The Shawshank Redemption is a better film and should have won Best Picture in 1994, but what can I do about it?

Rating; 9.4/10

American Beauty (1999)

I watched this film because Zithers, resident GLB movie expert, claimed it was one of four 10/10 films he had seen (the others being The Good, The Bad and the Ugly, 2001; A Space Odyssey and American History X.)  Going into this film, I figured it would be a good exhibition of film excellence... but that presupposition was completely understated.

This movie is extremely captivating from it's opening scene.  All six main characters are greatly exhibited and we can clearly see, almost instantly, what these characters are like from deep within.  This is rare for films, as most have trouble perfectly demonstrating even the main character, yet this film makes us feel as though we have known all six for all our lives.  Not only this, but the story is extremely mundane... the fact that the film can be so captivating while taking place under such mundane circumstances is amazing.  In one way, the mundanity of the movie makes it easy for us to all relate to... I think almost anyone can see their family or themselves in the seat of at least one of the characters.  Lastly, the concept of beauty and the way to live your life which the film explores is truly mind opening.

I downloaded many films this summer to study the characters which men of high value have.  This is why I downloaded movies like Die Hard, The Thomas Crown Affair and Fight Club.  When I started to watch this film, I wasn't expecting a guy like Tyler Durden or Thomas Crown to study and model behaviors or insight after, however the character of Lester Burnham was greater than I could have expected.  I knew I did poorly at school for a reason... to give myself more freedom and enjoy myself more in other aspects of life... and when I saw what Lester did in this film, it only cemented that what I was doing by following my heart was correct.  Lester is someone who discovers that life is beautiful, and there is no point in getting caught up in bullshit (like family, work, education, whatever) and that it is best to enjoy yourself.  That philosophy is so freeing.  Just get the means to do what you want to, and then do it.  It is beautiful.  I want to live the rest of my life like that.  It truly is the most beautiful thing anyone can ever learn in their lives.

Rating; 10/10

I saw Forrest Gump before, but I was very young and didn't understand or appreciate anything.

Axel, what in your opinion are the best romance movies ever? Which movies share the greatest love story, the best?

Also, which films do you like which have the greatest, most manly, awesome, powerful characters?

These are the kinds of films I'd like to focus on watching for the time being. If you can look through my top 250 and pick out a few in there which fit these criteria that I haven't seen I would highly appreciate it

Behind every great love is a great story. The Notebook is just outside the top 250 you know

I think I'm gonna have a look at Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist.

Scent of a Woman (1992) - Is it just me or have I seen too many movies recently where Pacino is nothing but a smooth Italian gangster? Instead this movie blew me away by his performance on somewhat a different role of what he often plays. Very enjoyable film! I'm gonna quote some things here, some that made me laugh highly.

"Women! What can you say? Who made 'em? God must have been a fuckin' genius. The hair... They say the hair is everything, you know. Have you ever buried your nose in a mountain of curls... just wanted to go to sleep forever? Or lips... and when they touched, yours were like... that first swallow of wine... after you just crossed the desert....... TITS! Hoo-ah! Big ones, little ones, nipples staring right out at ya, like secret searchlights."

"When in doubt... fuck."

Rachel Getting Married (2008)

Very good.  This film has an excellent illustration of family dynamics, which are an extremely interesting concept to think about from a social-philosophical perspective.  We can see through this film that it is sometimes in our best interest to let go of family bonds, yet we still hold on... why?  Also, I really enjoyed how Kym was supposed to be the weird, messed up, insane nutcase, but through the film we can see how almost everyone who seems normal on the outside is messed up when it comes down to it as well.  Great acting by Anne Hathaway who was awesomely attractive as a messed up addict (maybe I'm just weird and attracted to that, but hey) and a very cool watch.

Goose Rating; 8.6/10

American History X (1998 )

Definitely a very, very good film but I really don't know what to think or say about it, and I never want to see it again.

Rachel Getting Married; i heard stories of people getting motion sickness early on in that film because of the camera movements. Did you have any gripes with that Ryan?

No

My addiction to Coca-Cola has caused me to have extremely irrational, random movements (this obviously hinders my progress with women) alas I am quite used to this kind of Brownian motion used by the cameras in the film.

Assault on Precinct 13 (John Carpenter)

very enjoyable! i am probably biased when it comes to commenting on Carp's movies, but i just love them all! this one delivers on the action, intensity and drama in a way that 95% of movies today cannot! the only thing this movie was missing was a Jack Burton/Snake Plisskin hybrid character played by Kurt Russell!!!!!

American History X

Definitely one of the most brilliant movies I have ever seen, I just wish I had seen it earlier. Perfectly displays the effects of hate and friendship. 10/10 for me.

American Beauty

Another great movie, similar theme about human nature, though I guess the ending was a little disappointing for me in some ways. 9/10.

lool @ and last week for the LAST time!

ps American Beauty was not that great, imo.

i agree with you Clems, X def shows the affects and consequences of false hatred and shows that whether we know it or not, we are influencing those around us who are looking to us for guidence and purpose. great story and i love how it was devastaing in the end and not a cop-out, BS ending. i also think that Ed Norton should have easily won best actor (or supporting at least-i'm not sure how the academy figures those things) he was brilliant in this movie! imo, he has never done anything like that since and it breaks my heart to watch him in roles like the one he had in the Italian Job (remake)

I agree Shawn, American Beauty was good but not like amazing, like I didnt walk away from it feeling like it changed my outlook on life or anything...some parts of the movie i found myself saying "oh whatever" in my head. But AHX to me is much more authentic and striking. My city is a lot like the one in the movie...in that when I grew up it was nice, but after a while it sort of turned into crap in some places, I mean the high school I went to was like 8/10 black people. But, I am not racist at all, and I think everyone should watch this movie, because it perfectly shows how stupid it is to hate and what comes from it. And I agree his performance was amazing..shame he didn't get an award.

please don't take any disrepect, Max. i laugh at the whole "language-barrier" that exists here at The Elite! since we all helm from different parts of the same world, we speak differently. i am just a goofy person by nature, so i find many such things amusing and comical in a pleasant way. again, please don't think that i am disrespecting you or anyone else for the way you talk! i mean no offense!

btw-David is right, i was laughing at the seemingly apparent paradox that you said. but i understand what you meant, i was just amused by it.

Fight Club

this movie would've been WAAAAAAY cooler if Tyler had actually LEARNED something in the end! instead he just says to Marla, "you've caught me at a really strange time in my life right now" or something really close to that and there is apparently NO lesson learned or REASON for the whole story. i'm not knocking this movie-i LOL'd at it and thought it was definitely entertaining. i'm just saying that there didn't seem to be a resolution or a productive revelation to Tyler in the end.

7/10

Here are a few of my favourite romance movies (not really my favourite genre but anyway): Casablanca, It's a Wonderful Life, Sunrise, My Man Godfrey and I was very moved by "Mask" (1985); that's really a forgotten masterpiece. Jean de Florette is also very moving. Some of Woody Allen's films, Little Miss Sunshine, On Golden Pond etc

Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry series Ethan Edwards in "The Searchers"; that's all I can think of right now

****SPOILER ALERT****

not that there is anything wrong with desiring happy endings, but no.  i never even hinted that i "needed" a happy ending for this movie.  don't know where you got that from... all i said was that there was no PRODUCTIVE***** ending or resolution.  Tyler learned nothing about himself in the end (at least that's how i understood it) therefore the end was pointless (though entertaining, AS I SAID*****)

if you read my post on American History X, you will see that even though there was a depressing, sad ending, i very much enjoyed the end because it showed consequence and DIDN'T pull a cop-out, BS, happy-ending hug-fest!

Thanks Axel

And I find it strange that Clemens feels as though he hadn't changed his outlook on life by seeing American Beauty. But then again nothing really changed much for me after seeing American History X... I guess it depends on what kind of person you are.

Edward Norton in AHX is a hottie

I saw a few more films, will post later.

All I got from the ending of American Beauty was that Tyler was remembering how good his life was when everything was simple, before having a family complicated it and turned his wife into "someone else". To me it didn't really have a whole lot of message, just that life is much better before things get complicated. And I didn't really get why his daughter was such a brat, I mean he was really nice towards her, didnt really give her much reason to rebel against him, so in that sense it felt a bit cheesy as well. Also Rick's dad being insanely homophobic (and pretty old fashioned for having a home in the city, especially with a wife who seems Amish) seemed a bit over the top; I know homophobic people are out there, but that was a bit ridiculous. I can go on and on, but overall I felt the movie had a lot of stereotypes and at a lot of times didn't feel too authentic. I did rate it well, I mean it is a good movie, but maybe I was generous, would probably rate it like 7/10 or so now that I think about it.

American History X I liked more because I felt it had much more meaning and it never felt fake or cheesy...the entire movie felt very authentic, and I thought the message was profound.

IT's Lester, not Tyler.

And the point of the movie isn't that "life is better simple."

It's that... even though society tells us to live a life like Lester had in the beginning, it is often times better not to.  Do what makes you happy... don't fall victim to the bullshit that is telling everyone in the world that they need to be a slave to education/work/family.  Life your own life and do your own thing... don't get married and have a family "because it's the thing to do."

Also, through the movie, we can see that people who live the "perfect" life, like Lester's wife and Angela, aren't really happy on the inside.  Again, it's kind of like... don't be a cookie cutter... be yourself.

Finally, the movie is so great because of how mundane it is.  Movies like Fight Club and Pulp Fiction are cool, but they're very unusual, abnormal circumstances which take place.  American Beauty could easily be a real story, and in fact it is a real story lived out by millions of Americans every day.  The relatability is massive.  The characters are perfectly illustrated; we feel as though we know and understand them all almost instantly.

Anyways

The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)

I was a bit disappointed.  I was hoping for a lot better from this movie, but at least the two main characters were pretty cool.

Don't get me wrong, AHX is a great film, but American Beauty hit me harder. It just depends who you are and what your life's issues are.

I really related to Norton's character in the first hour of AHX (whether that's a good thing or not) but as the movie progressed and nothing got done, it really bothered me.

Another thing about American Beauty is that it is so compelling from the opening frames. The interest and excitement which you are enticed with while watching American Beauty is remarkable given the mundane nature of the film.

Either way, they're both great films.

I watched the first hour of Fight Club again and it gets better the more I think about it and watch it.

"This is your life and it's ending one second at a time."

I guess the main reason I don't like AHX as much as American Beauty and don't like it as much as the parts I liked about Fight Club is that I can't really see any way I can change my life from what I've learned in AHX, or at least, nothing that I didn't already know. We all know that "hate is bad" and "love is the greatest power of all." It is indoctrinated in us from when we are born. Yes, AHX shows it in a deep, powerful way, but the stuff in Fight Club and American Beauty isn't stuff we think about every day.

The scene where Derek kills the two black guys is one of the greatest, non-climax scenes in any film I've ever seen. It was just so heart pounding intense, was done very well and had excellent imagery (the image of Derek in crucifix stance for the police officers with the Nazi tattoo on his heart was a crazy juxtaposition of Jesus Christ/Nazism.)

American Beauty also hit me like a truck. It really made me realise how important these moments we have in our lives.

I watched Hangover last night and it was a really great movie but they took it a bit too far in the end.

TF2-Revenge of the Fallen

i couldn't give an accurate review of this movie that would make sense, but here are a few things for you:

1. does Michale Bay blow up 1000 rimes more crap than in any other 2 movies combined? YES

2. do the robots, especially Optimus and Bumblebee, kick some serious tin-can a$$ AND look BEAUTIFUL doing it? YES

3. did this movie look spectacular on IMAX? YES

4. do 90% of the actual human scenes/dialogue make you wanna vomit in your own mouth? YES

5. should a movie like TF2 be taken THAT serious? (see number 4) PROBABLY NOT

6. does Michael Bay put more sugar on his cereal than is necessary or healthy? I WOULD BET MY LIFE ON IT!

if you dig the CG robot action, than this is the best, bad-a$$ effects movie since, well, the last Transformers, but if you think that Bay & Co. has finally figured out how to NOT make a cheeseball, beauty/sex-glorifying movie, than you will be sorely disappointed!!!

i agree with Goose-for what it is, TF2 was a crazy ride! upon first viewing - 7/10

I saw Taken earlier today. There wasn't a dull moment in that movie. It's a must-see for all of you action junkies out there.

Fargo was really awesome. maybe not a 10/10 for me, but pretty close. I thought the cinematography was outstanding.

Devil Wears Prada... 9/10? It was pretty good, but what made it 9/10. Hathaway is hot in it i guess
