in America it's called Chocolate (or The Fury)

pretty stylish, better story than some in the same genre and the fighting gets progressively better throughout the movie.

for action/fight movie fans, i would definitely recommend this flick!

7.5/10

I just saw The Shawshank Redemption for the first time, and all I can say is it definitely deserves its #1 ranking on imdb. However, The Good the Bad and the Ugly still remains my favorite film

I went and saw Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince a few days ago. I won't go into any details other than to say I enjoyed it and felt it did the book justice (my favorite HP book). There was a surprising amount of comedy throughout which i really credit as it was the funniest of the books strategically placed before the final showdown.

Yeah DK! Shawshank and GBU are both amazing movies.

American History X (1995 or so)

I really liked this movie. Obviously uncomfortably graphic in places, but the scenes where people just converse (for a long time) are excellent. My favorite performance from Edward Norton and Edward Furlong does a very nice job as well. And look, it's Sisko!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009)

Well it had 10% of the book as usual, but that's irreconcilable and I thought the film did a great job of including the critical parts of the book. HOWEVER. At the end (I won't spoil don't worry) Snape and Harry have an interaction, and I was EXTREMELY let down by it. In the book Snape gets angry in a way that's very unusual for his character, which comes about because he just had to kill someone...important. In the movie they played this way down and Snape just acted like he always does, quiet or whatever. This was the moment I was most looking forward to in the whole movie and I thought they completely botched it. But like I said it's a great movie otherwise, the actors have matured quite a bit and their performances are much better than in some of the earlier films, I'll give it a 7/10.

AHX is 1998

and it's not really "graphic" compared to other films. Nor did I find it uncomfortable.

Outbreak (1995) - Surprisingly good disaster epic. One of the best, if not the best in its genre.
Hook (1991)- Spielberg's worst movie?

Just watched Donnie Darko, the 2nd of two favorites of DK which I wanted to see. I'll save a full critique for next time I'm using a real computer since I really like this movie and want to discuss it in depth.

You didn't like Hook, Axel? I don't like it as much as a lot of people I know (OMG Hook it's so awesome), but I think it's solid.

Wimbledon (2007 I guess)

Ehhhh...still think Dunst is less than exceptional. Bettany was quite good though and the film is a fun watch.

I'm not watching Hotaru until I feel like it. I have full intention to watch it Durk so don't worry.

I watched Little Miss Sunshine with the family for the first time last night and it was also very well done and quite the entertaining watch.

"Hook" was way overlong and I found the story rather dull. Some good parts though.

The Big Parade (1925) - watched this cause of its rate (8.7/10 wow!) and it keeps falling on and off the 250 list. Solid silent epic, 7/10
La sconosciuta (The Unknown) (2006) - From the director of "Cinema Paradiso". Interesting story (a bit uneven at times) and surprisingly good actors, somewhat weak ending though (although others may like it), ended up in a 7/10
Only Angels Have Wings (1939) - For those of you who liked "His Girl Friday" and "Bringing Up Baby" among others I can recommend this one, directed by the same guy, the legendary Howard Hawks, 7/10.
Holiday (1938) - Basically almost the same plot/environment as in "The Philadelphia Story" also starring Cary Grant and Katherine Hepburn. A Good film but nothing really new, 7/10
The Incredibles (2004) - 2nd time, 8/10

Haven't watched "The Notebook" yet, but don't worry, I will

Now, Voyager (1942) - 6/10, worse than expected
Big (1988) - 7/10, one of the most famous comedies of the 80's I hadn't watched, until just now.
The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - 6/10, not bad, but overrated in a way
To Be or Not to Be (1942) - 8/10, brilliant script and very funny at times. Much better than Mel Brooks remake in 1983

I went to see The Ugly Truth with the family the other day. It was a decent romcom but nothing special, nowhere near as memorable as say, The 40 Year Old Virgin. Not a bad watch but again, nothing special.

Axel, you need to slow down... those movies aren't going anywhere!

i just watched 12 Angry Men. it was good. they got a lot accomplished on a very small set (the whole movie essentially takes place in one small room) and it's usage of gentlemen-ly debating was very nice to watch.

7.5/10

The other night I watched the most tragically beautiful story I've ever witnessed in film.  It's the first time I can ever remember crying from a film out of sheer sadness (though I cried somewhat during Cast Away and Armageddon, it really wasn't the same thing.)

Bridge to Terabithia (2007)

The only criticism I have is that some of the effects were lame, but surely that is merely a function of it being done on film by Disney (which I still can't believe given the content.)  I did read that it is one of the most commonly challenged pieces of literature in America and am sure the book is far better as the weak special effects would not be a factor.  They were nowhere near poor enough to ruin the film as it is still the most emotionally bothering picture I've ever seen.

I'll save full breakdown and spoilers for until after I watch Hotaru No Haka to see what Durk is talking about and then I'll compare the tragedies.

Total Recall (1990) - 2nd time, OK Schwarzenegger film
Transformers (2007) - 7/10
Taken (2008) - 8.5/10 - Nesson's best performance? His most Eastwood-like so far. This was an extremely suspenseful film; I enjoyed every minute of it.

Funny People (2009)

The best picture of the year so far. Great, meaningful movie set with comedians to create a one of a kind fusion. Would not be surprised to see Sandler nominated for many awards here.

Durk, for me "Akira" was an OK film. I though the start was very good and the music awesome; however it was also a bit overlong and too confusing at some parts. And also; animated films are far from being my favourite genre.

Der amerikanische Freund (1977) - Great film; one of the best german films I've ever seen if not the best of all. MUCH better than all american Tom Ripley adaptations. 8.5/10
Zwartboek (Black Book) (2006) - 7.5/10

Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo (1966). Really great movie, even though I don't particularly like "long" movies for some reason, because most of them tend to become longer than necessary making it a pain in the ass to watch. Not in this case. Liked the music theme a lot, and was used in all the needed situations. The 3 main actors managed to play their roles quite suberb as well.

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975). This movie was "alright" in my opinion, I fail to see what was so great about it, and why this is top 10 material on the IMDB top 250. I liked a few twists, and of course the acting by Jack Nicholson, but that really was all to it.

Psycho (1960). I haven't seen many Hitchcock movies for as far as I can remember (except for Rear Window), but I really liked this one. Including maybe the most famous horror scene ever, this movie really gave me the creeps at many points. Also, a surprising ending, which I like most of the times. Moreover, the music was excellent, which only amplified the "nerve moments" in the movies.

Citizen Kane (1941). For some reason I don't really know what to think about this movie. First of all, this is such a classic movie, that it would feel harsh me criticizing it or even saying that at some parts I found it boring (which I did). Second of all, I guess nowadays most people (including myself) aren't used to old movies anymore, and therefore it is difficult to say what was good for that time. Anyway, I have to say I merely liked it, but expected more of it. A vague ending and a "not-so-interesting" storyline proves this.

Slumdog Millionaire (2008). Okay, so this was quite an entertaining movie, but why did it win 8 oscars? I'm not surprised the movie didn't win an oscar for best acting in any category, because I thought it was horrible. The whole idea of the movie was original though, and the movie would probably have done quite well without the whole addition of the quiz show as well, which proves that the "basic" storyline would have provided for a good movie anyway.

Blood Diamond (2006). Somehow I haven't had time to watch this, or felt the need to watch it. I came across it in the library, and was remembered that I'd always wanted to see this. I liked the movie a lot. Even though, for some reason, I cannot stand DiCaprio his acting was really good, and this also counts for the other main actor, Djimon Hounsou (the black guy). It's also a movie with an underlying meaning, trying to convey a message to everyone who watches it, making you think about the whole situation in Africa in this case. All in all, great acting, great storyline, and a message in the movie, makes it a "must see" for everyone IMO.

Message in a Bottle (1999). lol wtf?

Amadeus- dubya-tee-eff, mate?!?!?! this movie was crazy and quite annoying in some parts! every time Tom Hulce (Mozart) was on screen i got a headache and i was dis-interested in most of his screen time. however i liked nearly every second of F. Murray Abraham's (Salieri) acting and am glad that he won best actor for his part!

crazy movie with odd material and some good and some annoying acting... i probably shouldn't rate this for any reason since it wasn't my cup 'o tea...

Ronin
- always fun to watch! seen it several times and i enjoy it every time! great cast (including 3 Bond villains!!!) and slick car chases with decent gun play... 8/10

The Proposal (2009)

not the worst movie ever, but so overly predictable and a pretty stupid story, imo...

Match Point (2007 I think)

Really good! I continue to love Woody Allen, and Rhys-Meyers gave a great performance. The ending is unusual and leaves you thinking. 8/10.

Gone Baby Gone (same year?)

Eh...yeah this was good but you could tell Ben Affleck was a rookie. I thought the ending, especially Casey Affleck's conversation with Monaghan was sort of rushed and not very effectively done. An interesting story overall...probably a 7/10.

Gran Torino (2008)

This movie sucked. The story was OK, the acting (apart from Eastwood) was terrible, I was never really interested in what was happening. That being said, I sat through the whole thing because of Clint's performance, which was absolutely fantastic. I thought he was near-perfect in every scene, acting very believable and lifelike. His performance redeems this piece of crap to a 6/10...can't say it's my favorite performance ever or anything because that would have to go along with a good movie, but a great job by him nonetheless.

Final Destination 2 (2002?)

lol. 3/10.

Run Silent, Run Deep (1958) - One of the better submarine movies. 7/10

The Misfits (1961) - Directed by John Huston (Treasure of Sierra Madre, Maltese Falcon), this was going to be Clark Gable's and Marilyn Monroe's last feature film. And Montgomery Clift died only 5 years later (45 years old). Seldom has 3 relatively young actors appeared in the same film and died shortly after. Ironically enough, Eli Wallach, also starring in this film, is currently the oldest active actor in Hollywood (93 years old!!). This was certainly not a great film, but worth seeing. Well acted. Memorable ending. 6/10.

The Killer Elite (1975) - 3/10. Can't say I liked this one, directed by Sam Peckinpah (The Wild Bunch, Straw Dogs). A decent beginning but the film itself was too uninteresting as well as a bit confusing.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia (1974) - Another Peckinpah feature. This one was better than "Killer Elite"; however, still a disappointment. Peckinpah is overrated imo. 4/10

The First Great Train Robbery (1979) - A gem worth watching. 7/10

Gladiator (2000) - 2nd time I watch it

Not a bad movie to watch, but comparable to some low content, cliche superhero movie like The Dark Knight or Iron Man.  There are so many openings left unexplored and even the deep, meaningful part of the storyline is molested quite badly.  Some of the slow-motion camera scenes have aged very poorly, which is ridiculous considering the film isn't even 10 years old.  Let's go with a 5.9/10.

Cool Hand Luke (1967)

Not sure what to think of this film.  I really enjoyed watching Paul Newman's performance but as the film went on and it was just more of the same I became a bit bored. How about a 7.5/10.

Almost Famous (2000)

This film wasn't as good as I thought it would be, but it wasn't bad.  I'd say it was quite good, but  not great.  The character of Penny Lane is really cool, even though I didn't like the decision she makes in the end, and the storyline is pretty interesting.  A good look at rock and roll music.  I'll give this an 8/10.

The Shawshank Redemption (1994). I came across this movie accidently on TV, and whenever I do, I always have to watch it, no matter what (I was at a friend's place this time). I believe it's the 3rd time that I've seen this movie, and it's still really enjoyable. Some movies you can watch multiple times without getting bored, and some are only worthwhile watching 1 time. I bet I can watch this one today again, really great movie, and deserves its spot as #1 in the top 250.

Some movies I have been watching which have been advised to me by the great Acke himself:

Once Upon a Time in the West (1968). Fairly enjoyable. The music totally rocked in this movie. The storyline was alright, not too spectacular I guess. The acting was well done, and the sphere overall was marvelous. A good and enjoyable movie, but I certainly preferred 'The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly' over this movie (if a comparison is possible anyway).

Dial M for Murder (1954). I really enjoyed this one. There are few movies where you're kinda stuck to the screen constantly wondering what's going to happen next and how things are going to turn out. Pretty hilarious at some points, might as well have called this movie 'Murphy's Law at its finest'. Also a movie that indicates that a good storyline can totally make or break a movie, which in this case, made it.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). Well, I guess you either hate or love the movie, and I hated it. I don't understand why this is considered to be a fantastic movie. The first hour was utterly boring, and even though I've seen it yesterday, the only thing I can yet still remember are some very long and boring shots of spaceships. I guess it was fine for its time, and I'm sure a lot of people still like it nowadays, but not me in any case. I also feel this movie could've been done in.. 1 hour.

Vertigo (1958). Another Hitchock thriller. All in all another surprising, "stuck to your seat" type of movie. Great story, good plot, although a bit unrealistic at some point. Why wouldn't you recognize someone with a different haircut? Anyway, I enjoyed it, and that's what matters.

The Goods; Live Hard, Sell Hard (2009)

Really funny. The super cocky characters were great to watch. It was short enough but a lot got done. Nothing was too stupid or corny. I'll say top 2 pure comedies of the year with Fired Up.

Bandslam (2009)

I absolutely LOOOOOVED this movie. Way better than others of this genre (HSM, HMM, Step Up, etc,) and far less cheesy. I loved the quirky female leads and there was some actual interesting musical history involved. My new favorite of 2009. 9.1/10

The Time Traveler's Wife (2009)

Very good despite a reluctant start. A bit too sensitive and deep for me though. I'll give it a solid 8/10
