More recommendations from the one and only Acke!

Gran Torino (2008). All in all this was a good movie. I really liked the performance by Clint Eastwood, and the story overall. The ending was somewhat to be expected, but I think it doesn't make the movie less in any way. Funny dialogues combined with a serious story makes it good. However, pretty much all the actors were performing pretty bad IMO.

Ben-Hur (1959). I don't think I can say that I didn't enjoy it; because I did. However, the movie is way too long (212 minutes) and generally I don't like these very long movies. It's however save to say that this movie deserved all of the oscars it won, because of the performance, the story, the music, pretty much everything coming together. But once again, it was too long and sometimes too boring for me to really have enjoyed it.

The Elephant Man (1980). Ugh, actually pretty disturbing at some parts, knowing that this is based on a true story and I've googled some pictures of the real Elephant Man as well and he indeed looks just like the one in the movies. Anyway, it was pretty predictable in a lot of parts I'd say. The acting performance of John Hurt (nominated for oscar) didn't amaze me at all. People who play such a weird and extreme role get praised way too easily. The emotions of the Elephant Man himself were in some parts actually quite sad and knowing that it's real it actually did make me wonder what a weird life that guy must've had. Overall, it was entertaining, but the weirdness attached to the movie made it not really that likeable.

It's a Wonderful Life (1946). Really liked it a lot. I would've preferred for the angel to come down to earth earlier though. And also, I think that the intention of the angel was to show a person how valuable he is in order to let him appreciate life again. Well, he did enjoy life again after all, but this was more due to the fact that he was happy to be relieved from all the odd situations around him than because of the original intention of the angel. So that's what I think should've been made clearer in the movie. Anyway, I guess the storyline is pretty original, and it made me smile at the end, so couldn't say I was all that bothered by my points above.

Apparently District 9 is in ranked in the 30s on the imdb top 250 so I'll have to go see it sometime soon.

Durkmeistrejje, I don't want to watch Hotaru No Haka, but I really want to see Mononoke-hime, Spirited Away and Ponyo in the near future. Is this OK with you?

District 9 is officially the best movie of the summer and possibly of the year!!!

what a treat of a movie! original, funny, action-packed and one heck of a story that actually resonates with some sort of reality. i very much recommend this to everyone (except Goose, who only likes Hanna Montana movies) and definitely think that this Blomkamp fellow ought to make Halo now!!!

9.5/10

I have to see D9 now... it looked like the biggest joke ever with the trailer's but a top 40 imdb spot, apartheid allegories and everyone else's praise I've been converted.  I'll see it next Tuesday on cheap night.  I would have seen it tonight but I just rented

Taken (2008)

Seems like everyone else here has summed it up well.  Insane.  Great movie.  Great character.  Epic win.

really nothing or no one to sympathize with or invest in. DeNiro was great, but i didnt care for his character that much, or anybody else's (?) for that matter. i cannot rate this movie.

Inglourious Basterds- ugh... what a croc-o-shite! does anybody even care about this Tarantino douche-bags movies anymore? absolutely no character to invest in or care about or any storyline to consider worthwhile. seems like he just puts his dialogue driven scenes up on screen hoping people will say "that was some great dialogue" ugh... i officially hate QT's movies! he needs to go start selling newspapers on the street corner or something!

Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971) - 4.5/10, interesting plot and a fine cast but quite boring overall

The Border (1982) - 5.5/10 - Starring Jack Nicholson as an US border agent and with a fine performance by Harvey Keitel. Average drama I guess; some good scenes

Coraline (2009) - 6.5/10

Ai no corrida (In the Realm of the Senses) (1976) - 1/10 - I haven't seen such a bad movie in a long time. This "porno" more or less had no charachters to care about and the way the film was told was bad, to say the least. I found nothing to be good in this film and the only reason I watched it was cause it featured in one book I've got in a chapter "The 100 Best Movies Ever", can't believe this one was in it. Some critics thought this film to be a serious study of power and oppression, I disagree. No entertaining value whatsoever.

Buffalo Bill & the Indians, or Sitting Bull's History Lesson (1976) - 4/10 - an uneven but, at some time, gripping western. Directed by the unconventional Robert Altman (Gosford Park, Short Cuts, MASH, Nashville, The Player) this is one of his worst films I've seen yet

went to the cinemas yesteday and saw...

Inglorious Basterds (2009) - 7.5/10 - while I agree with Shawn that Tarantino's films may be a little conceited, cold-hearted and with charachters you can't really invest in, it's so damn nicely done. Perfect music choice (inspired by Ennio Morricone, my hero), great cinematography and with a gripping (but of course pretentious) plot. Brad Pitt (who has always annoyed me) is actually very funny at times but also so annoying I could hit the "basterd". The rest of the cast though, is perfect, especially Chrisopher Waltz as Hans Landa. However, I'm quite positive that Tarantino won't win the best director caregory (nor best picture) in next year's annual AA.

and...

District 9 (2009) - 6.5/10 - I can't believe this one (of all new films) is so highly ranked on the top 250, it's beyond me really. It wasn't that bad, but the documentary-liked way the film was directed lowered the entertaining value imo. Of course this was an eccentric way to tell a story (and it had good special effects considering the film's budget), but I thought this movie was pretty average, as well as the plot being a bit clichéish as I've seen dozen of this kind of film before, (perhaps not with aliens featuring, though). It has fallen (and will continue to fall) from the top of the 250 rather quickly (it peaked at #26ish or so iirc and now it's #44), which pleases me.

District 9 (2009)

First 20 minutes I thought I was right and it was shit. Then it became awesome. Best new movie in a looooooong time. Really interesting, lots of issues revealed and a beautiful, ironic story. 9+/10.

I'd say, excluding Pixar. District 9 is the best movie in 5 years or so. It is of high quality artistically, visually and inspirationally. I hope it kicks ROTF's ass for those few awards at the Oscars.

The Sting (1973). The beginning was pretty boring, but it was alright nevertheless. The ending of the movie, where everything comes together was great. Maybe worth watching for a second time, just to get all the clues which are easy to be missed when you watch it only one time. Performance of actors was alright as well. The storyline with the different chapters was pretty unnecessary, but the music (The Entertainer) was pretty suiting.

Les diaboliques (1955). This was pretty alright. Knowing Acke (this movie was advised by him) it was evident that the whole movie turned out to be one big surprise.. I can't say all too much about it, because the movie itself forbids me to! Pretty good movie though, and made me feel quite stupid at the end as well.

Léon (1994). This may seem like a standard movie, full of action and stuff like that. However, I thought that this movie had something extra, which made it way better than all the "other" action movies out there. The murderer who lost his cruel mind, and gained some huminity must have been done before.. but all in all everything seems to come together quite well in this movie. Must have been one of Portman's first appearances ever, and really liked it. Same goes for Jean Reno.

Life of Brian (1979). Don't really know what to think of it. Some parts were entertaining and some parts were full of humour. However, I expected more of it. There wasn't really a storyline, which usually doesn't even matter as long as there is something else which compensates for that, but I don't know what. It was not a complete cruelty to watch, but I don't understand the fuzz about this movie. Maybe its controversy or something.

No Country for Old Men (2007). I really liked the movie, from beginning to end, although some parts were a bit slowish. I was watching.. full with excitement.. and then.. the movie ended! What the hell. Why did it have such a weird ending? It's not like a movie is suddenly so great when it has an open ending, nor did it in any way contribute to the story. I thought it was pretty lame. Apart from that, the movie itself was a good watch though.

Time was untied when set.

Blade Runner (1982). A pretty average film, with an average storyline. I don't think that putting a standard story and situations in some futuristic jacket suddenly makes the story itself more worthwhile or more interesting. At least the scenery was pretty good, bit annoyed by all the freaking Coca Cola commercials here, what the heck!

Cidade de Deus (2002). I was really impressed by this movie. The story was awesome, and realistic (also based on a true story). Seldom movies make you feel like you were actually there, but this one did a pretty good job. Sometimes the camerawork was a bit shaky and went all over the place, giving me some half headaches. Apart from that, it's a must see!

I haven't let it "sink in" yet.

Liked some parts of it a lot definitely! That whole scene where Theo was looking for Kee inside the prison camp was the most brutal one I have ever seen in terms of cinematography and cordination! Absolutely breathtaking and I have no idea how they pulled it off. Music was suiting for a lot of parts but I don't want to spoil things for others. The story felt kind of original and there was a certain depth behind the characters. Whatever it's realistic or not I do not care much cause it's supposed to be a bit sci-fi. Also some effects early on like the car chase and stuff was very cool and felt real. I think it would have been quite the movie to see in the cinemas. I suck at reviews so I prefer sticking in-depth opinions and details about movies for myself since I might have a different opinion about the film the second time I see it.

I'd give it a 7,5-9 somewhere out of 10 bunnies. Deserved top 250 IMDB film.

lol I saw "Cidade de Deus" at the cinema and I remember I got such a headache watching it that I was home from school the day after. In general, I just hate films where the camera shakes and moves all the time. Extremely overrated imo; however, I've only seen it once and I might appreciate it more next time, but I doubt it

I can see where Acke is coming from. City of God is very good but still not on the same level as Shawshank, Pulp Fiction, American Beauty, SPR, etc. I'd say it's a tier 2 film (though films have like 100 tiers )

Goldeneye-many times i see it!

i LOL'd so loud when Trev walked up to Doak and shot him (presumably) in the face!

Easily Pierce's best Bond outing and for me at least it's in the top 3 Bond movies of all time!

The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (2005) - Solid western I guess; saw it cause it popped up on western top 50 (#49th)

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997) - A bit disappointed about this film, directed by Clint Eastwood and starring Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. Overlong and never really gripping.

Hondo - good, but nothing special

Intolerance: Love's Struggle Throughout the Ages (1916) - Watched this out of two reasons: it's the best film of the 1910's according to imdb, and it's featured in "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die". More or less a pain to watch; tedious to say the least despite some spectacular scenes.

The Miracle Worker (1962) - Gripping story, with superb performances of Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke (both won Oscars for this film). Quite oddly directed by Arthur Penn (Bonnie & Clyde).

A Time to Kill (1996) - This must've been one of the most famous movies from the 90's I yet hadn't watched until just now. Great cast, an appealing story (though a bit long), but oh my what a weak ending!

The Greatest Game Ever Played (2006)

6/10. Decent acting, decent story, decent everything.

Lock Up (1989)

Never really liked Stallone, but I thought he did very well here. I wish someone would remake this movie, because it's got a lot of interesting ideas and good scenes...it just fails to come together effectively. A good watch overall, and as I said easily Stallone's best performance. 8/10.

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest-1975

not great-and hardly even that good! i didn't really care about any of the characters, but they WERE funny in their mental states! i loved the cast, which included Brad Dourif (Lord of the Rings, X-Files), Michael Berryman (X-Files), Sydney Lassick (X-Files) and Vincent Schiavalli (Tomorrow Never Dies, X-Files) the ending was pretty garbage, but all-in-all, Jack Nicholson was somewhat funny and watchable. 5.5/10

The Last Winter-2006

ugh... Ron Perlman is about the only actor that you might know and he OVER-did this acting job! the movie was fairly watchable until about the last 15 minutes when we come to find out that, GET THIS, "spirit moose" (plural) actually come back from the grave to haunt and terrorize a group of oil drillers because they are-APPARENTLY-fed up with being used as fossil fuel (the moose)! LOL! 4/10

Final Destination-2000

i think that there was MAYBE a good idea somewhere in this movie, but in the end it was pretty poorly scripted and very weakly put into a movie. although, as a hardcore X-Files fan i very much enjoyed Darin Morgen and James Wong and all of the X-Files/Millennium cast that they used in this movie. the main cast retards were pretty laughable and a pain to watch. 3/10

Ponyo was good, but not great

the first 1/2 was excellent, but i felt the attempt at a plot and resolution actually shortened what could have been achieved on an artistc / visual level. story let this one down.

3.5/5

I want to watch Mononoke-hime and Spirited Away before I watch Ponyo. Mononoke-hime seems to be quite good according to about everyone.

Quarantine-2008

used and abused ideas here... and not to mention the usual batch of brainless schmucks running around in a small area with rabid "zombie-folk." give up on the trying to make a bad movie LESS bad just by filming it like Blair Witch Project or Cloverfield! 4/10

Mononoke-hime is just breathtaking. 5/5 + probably my favourite film of all time.
