Ocarina of Rhyme - One shot download - NOW ONLINE
« on: April 11, 2009, 01:03:00 am »
Edit:  Not enough people around here are swooning over this, so a one shot download is now available for you lazy cats:  zipped directory.

You guys might have seen this, it's slightly old'd by now, but I just caught wind of it and I am in love.  Check out these dope tracks, mixing both mainstream and  underground rappers with songs from OOT.  Try not to bask in the flyness, I dare you:

http://salacioussound.com...f-rhyme-is-off-the-hook/

You can stream it at that link and also d/l a few of the songs... I downloaded the whole thing (10 tracks) from some other place, a simple search should find it.  I might take up Ngamer's offer for some server space and then I'd host it assuming the songs are unlicensed or have an open license... I haven't checked yet.

Edit:  Ngamer came through in the clutch:  http://youse.speedrunwiki.com/oor/ Stream it from the above if you're semi-interested, but you can grab all the songs from this directory.

Tracklisting (with samples used):
1 Clipse - Virginia (Lost Woods)
2 Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg - Still D.R.E. (Getting treasure)
3 Jay-Z - No Hook (Meeting the Owl)
4 Pimp C, Li'l Keke & P.O.P. - Knockin' Doorz Down (Hyrule Field)
5 Common - I Used To Love H.E.R. (Hyrule Market)
6 Aesop Rock - No Jumpercables (Goron Village)
7 Edan - Fumbling Over Words (Battle)
8 MF Doom - Vomit (Horse Race at Lon Lon Ranch)
9 Spank Rock - IMC (Zora's Domain)
10 Slim Thug & Mike Jones - Still Tippin' (Great Fairy's Fountain)

There's also a separate project called Ocarina of Rhyme that was released like one day apart from this release that's altogether more independent, with some guy named Sleaze creating beats from OOT music/sound effects and coming up with his own rap lyrics to go over the beats.  I haven't gotten to listening to that one yet, since I've got this one with the name-brand rappers on repeat for now, but feel free to discuss that one, too!

Another release in the same vein as OOR!
Download at  goldnfly.com

Gold N’ Fly: 007 masterfully manipulates the music from the classic Nintendo 64 title Goldeneye: 007  to create a work of art that is both nostalgic and contemporary.  Alex puts an innovative twist on the brilliant compositions of Graeme Norgate  and Grant Kirkhope, repurposing their soundtrack for remixes of popular  songs by the likes of Jay-Z, Nas, 50 Cent, Rick Ross, Lil’ Wayne, Drake  and Eminem. The result is a generous serving of high-quality hip-hop, as well as a veritable trip down memory lane.  This release is for anyone who remembers the thrill of flicking their Nintendo 64’s power switch and jumping into the world of James Bond with their closest friends.

The Gold N' Fly gets major minus points from me for only using mainstream rappers.  On top of that, many of the songs seem forced, or carried solely because the underlying GE track is inherently awesome.  There's very little synergy between the vocal tracks and the underlying music.

This is where I feel that Team Teamwork (OOR & VF7 producer) was very strong.  Prime examples of insane synergy on those releases were both Jay-Z tracks, "No Hook" & "Lucifer" (paired with Owl Theme & Mako Reactor respectively).  Now THOSE songs are matches, in both flow and feel (and content).  Listening to Team Teamwork, many of the mash ups can sound more natural than the originals!  They almost confuse me into thinking they *are* the originals.  With this Gold N' Fly, it feels like he just shoved (mostly bad) rap on top of GE music.

So obviously, I rate Gold N' Fly pretty weak comparatively.  Still, there are a couple of mild standouts.  Mainly b/c the Wu Tang Clan ain't nothing to fuck wit.

Perhaps the disparity in my opinion stems from the nature of the music across these games.  FF7 & OOT use music to set a mood, or tell part of the story.  GoldenEye's music, although awesome, is just there as background.  This observation holds in general for RPGs versus shooters.  So, I'm much more emotionally invested in the RPG's tracks than I am GE's.  That could be partly why I'm not feeling it so much.

Still, good find.  I am glad people creative enough (and driven enough) to undertake such a task.  It probably warranted its own topic, considering this community's nature.

I thought pretty much the opposite of Youse. The few songs I listened to from OOR/VF7 sounded like a horrible clashing of styles. The first two singles from Gold N' Fly sound like they mesh perfectly. GE tracks make for surprisingly awesome rap beats, but nobody would want to rap over a fruity FF7/OOT song.

"Fruity".  Way to write off two of the swankest games (& soundtracks) of all time!  This coming from the guy who never played OOT, or never liked it, or something.  Secondly, why have you only listened to a few of the songs?  They are all up on youse.speedrunwiki.com

But anyway, I respect your opinion.  Your post made me revisit the album.  I might have been overly harsh.  Some of the GE mashups do have some merit: Intro, Dam, Runway, Surface, Bunker, Statue (only b/c of Nas), Control, Aztec, Game Over.  I just feel like trying to do most of the levels was a stretch.  If he chose the best 12, rather than a full 22 hit-or-misses, I might feel better about the release as a whole.  Still, I mostly listen to indie rap, and GNF is severely lacking here.

OOR Busta track >>>>>>>>>>> GNF Busta track.
OOR&VF7 Hova tracks >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> GNF Hova track.
VF7 Ghostface K track = GNF Wu track

And damn, GNF absolutely murdered Throw Some D's, one of my favorite pop-rap songs.  And will.i.am?  Seriously???  Ugh.

Wasn't all that impressed with the will.i.am and 50 Cent tracks but the first few work really well.
I'd agree with QB that the GE soundtrack is a more suitable choice to combine with a rap style. Most of the tracks have a punchy beat that you just don't see, particularly in OOT.
I struggle to pick a favourite between these mash up albums. They all have some highlights but there's the occasional that just doesn't cut it.

They're all on youtube too.

This is my favorite one; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prmmCg5bKxA
