The amazing elite tradition of chirping Alecboy continues with this year's NHL playoff preds!  Now that the playoff situation is all set, let's take a look at the matchups!

Eastern Conference

1 Boston Bruins vs 8 Montreal Canadiens
2 Washington Capitals vs 7 New York Rangers
3 New Jersey Devils vs 6 Carolina Hurricanes
5 Philadelphia Flyers vs 4 Pittsburgh Penguins

Western Conference

1 San Jose Sharks vs 8 Anaheim Ducks
2 Detroit Red Wings vs 7 Columbus Blue Jackets
3 Vancouver Canucks vs 6 St. Louis Blues
4 Chicago Blackhawks vs 5 Calgary Flames

Here is how it will work.  Pick the winner of the series before each round starts.  A correct pick gets you 10 points.  If you pick the series winner and also predict correctly the amount of games played in the series, you get a bonus 5 points.  In the Stanley Cup Finals, you will be able to predict the Conn Smythe Trophy winner for a bonus 10 points.

Canada vs USA has returned with a few rules!

-Along with the outright individual winner, there will be a team winner.  The teams are Canada vs. USA
-Rather than full 8 man rosters where everyone's scores count, only the top 5 scores per round will count towards your country's score!
-As Jon "Ngamer" Bearder reneged on the consequences of his team's loss last year, we have allowed for a double or nothing.  If Team USA wins, I, Goose, will sing The Star Spangled Banner into my mic and upload the mp3.  If Team Canada wins, Jon "Ngamer" Bearder will upload a full video of him singing O Canada while wearing only a towel!

Predictions must be in by Wednesday, April 15 at 7pm EST.

Predict away!

I closed the other topic.

Before I predict, how do the home games go? 2-3-2, or 2-2-1-1-1?

Boston 5
Washington 4
Carolina 6
Pittsburgh 6

Chicago 6
San Jose 4
Detroit 7
St. Louis 7

I hope almost all of my picks are wrong! Exceptions being Carolina and St. Louis. I'm ambivalent on Chicago & Calgary because I like both teams, and I hope the winner of that series wins the West-- if not-- Columbus or St. Louis.

Here is my prophecy as of right now.  This is obviously subject to change in the next few days with newer information.

EASTERN CONFERENCE

[1] Boston over [8] Montreal in 5 Games

Both experience and intuition tell me that Boston vs Montreal (the most occurring series ever) never goes predictably.  However, the Habs have won the last 3 of these match ups despite being the lower seed twice.  Markov out hurts.  The deluded faith in Price hurts.  Most of all, the Bruins are far more physical than the Habs and guys like Chara, Wideman, Lucic, Krejci (too many to name) will run the Habs into the ground.  Habs will win a home game, either Game 3, 3-1 or Game 4, 4-3 in OT.

[7] New York over [2] Washington in 7 Games

Washington is the equivalent of a boring, homely girl who has had professional makeup and designer clothing selections for an outing.  They are a team which has 2 of the best players in their respective positions in the world right now... and that's it.  I haaaaaaaaate Avery and hope he dies in an on ice incident but I think he will be effective in disarming Ovechkin.  The playoffs are when your true colors show, and the Capitals don't have any true colors.  The refs and random luck will be on Washington's side pushing this to 7 games in an otherwise lopsided series in favor of New York.

[6] Carolina over [3] New Jersey in 6 games

New Jersey is in free fall, and while Brodeur is the greatest goalie of all time I'm worried about his ability in big moments (part of me thinks we should pass him up for the Olympics, but this is obviously a crazy and controversial thing to do.  My reasonable part says we shouldn't, but my intuition says yes.)  Carolina is hotter than a frying pan on fire and they have more recent cup experience than New Jersey.  This is all I have to say.

[4] Pittsburgh over [5] Philadelphia in 6 games

Pittsburgh won last year, the Leafs have always beat the Sens in the battle of Ontario, Crosby and Malkin are the 2nd coming of Lemieux and Jagr.  Weak logic, I know, but I'm getting lazy.

WESTERN CONFERENCE

[1] San Jose over [8] Anaheim in 6 games

Showing hints of choking, San Jose will unfortunately take out Anaheim.  Any series involving any combination of San Jose/Anaheim/Dallas/Vancouver will be fun because of the way the teams play and their goaltending, but San Jose is too strong, at least they will be in the first round.

[2] Detroit over [7] Columbus in 4 games

As much as I hate picking this, it is what I believe will be the true occurrence.  Detroit is just too good of a team.  They will either win the cup this year, or they won't.  They do have the potential to win the cup again quite obviously.  It's the same team with Marian Hossa... uh seriously?  Columbus is great fun, and Mason might be able to almost steal a game by losing 1-0 in 5 OTs but I don't see Columbus standing a chance.  Keep in mind I will be cheering for Columbus all series long!

[3] Vancouver over [6] St. Louis in 7 games

http://www.youtube.com/wa...1k3o&feature=related

Ever since then, St. Louis became one of the best teams in the NHL.  They were 14th place in the West when that happened.  They are a cool team with excellent chemistry.  Not to mention that the Sedins and Sundin isn't exactly a super scoring threat.  The Canucks do however have Lunogo, and some awesome playoff guys like Bieksa, Burrows, Mitchell, Pyatt, Kesler, Raymond, etc etc.  A good Canadian team with good grit will pull this out in a super fun series.

[4] Chicago over [5] Calgary in 6 games

Chicago is this year's Pittburgh.  That is all.

Eastern Conference

1 Boston Bruins vs 8 Montreal Canadiens

Bruins!!! Whoo!!! Lost this matchup last year... but the Habs have had an allaround shitty year, Price has no confidence etc. This is the most likely sweep   but I think the Habs might take a home game. Looking forward to victory. Bruins 4-1

2 Washington Capitals vs 7 New York Rangers

Toterelli's done some great things for the Rangers, but the Caps are such a ridiculous team this year I don't think they had enough. Should be an   okay series. Caps 4-2

3 New Jersey Devils vs 6 Carolina Hurricanes

As much as I love the Devils, Brodeur Parise and the like, carolina has some pretty insane momentum going right now. They look almost unstoppeable, but this   is a hard series and will probably empty their reserves for round two... I think they take this one. Canes 4-2

5 Philadelphia Flyers vs 4 Pittsburgh Penguins

LOL Philadelphia. Pittsburgh isn't a super-team this year though so it's not one sided by any means... still, LOL Flyers. Penguins 4-1

  Western Conference

1 San Jose Sharks vs 8 Anaheim Ducks

I've never had any faith in SJ as a playoff team whatsoever. They're an amazing team this year, no doubt, but I just can't see them as winners. I   can't! Call me a fool, but I'm rooting for a grueling Ducks upset. Ducks 4-3

2 Detroit Red Wings vs 7 Columbus Blue Jackets

I love Columbus to death, but I respect (and fear) the power of the red wings. Their main weakness is an inconsitent Chris Osbad, but sad to say I think they   have this in the bag. Jackets should win a couple though, they rock. This'll likely be the most exciting series in round one. Wings 4-2

3 Vancouver Canucks vs 6 St. Louis Blues

Huh... I hear a lot of "vancouver has no offense!!" basically everywhere, but I've seen their games and really have to wonder where all this   crack is coming from. Canucks 4-1

4 Chicago Blackhawks vs 5 Calgary Flames

I'll be honest. Earlier this year I figured Calgary as the best overall team, but they've done nothing but prove me wrong the last couple months.   Chicago, who've been the pinnacle of consistency this year have a hammer poised to drive the final nail in that coffin, the corpse, and the floor   beneath. I take back my earlier mention of only sweep probably being the Bruins/Habs. THIS one's a sweep. Hawks 4-0

-Bruins in 5 ; Montreal will manage to win a home game, sure.  Probably the first one.
-Capitals in 6 ; I don't know much about these teams, so random #!
-New Jersey in 6; Carolina 6 seed?  Where did that come from
-Pittsburgh in 5; Don't like either team, but it always has potential to be a great matchup!

-San Jose in 6 ; Sharks may not be built for the playoffs, but the Ducks aren't good enough to get this one done
-Red Wings in 5 ; Wings pick it up for the playoffs, as always.
-St. Louis in 6; Gotta go with an upset somewhere, and I'll take the red hot blues over the.. well, hot Canucks.
-Chicago in 4; Also gotta go with a sweep somewhere, and after the Flames' "collapse" and injuries, Chicago's had a big year just for the franchise in general, etc., I'm going to predict a thrashing here

I haven't watched too much hockey this year, but I've followed the standings and stories all year.  Excited to finally get some TV coverage, and that VERSUS decided to pick up every single Sharks game in round one.  GOGOGOG Sharks!!!

New Rules on the USA/Canada Country War!

Im Ngamer (9:15:11 PM): first for the bet, I want to go double or nothing
Im Ngamer (9:15:30 PM): if Canada wins again, I will sing the anthem... on video... wearing only a towel
Im Ngamer (9:15:40 PM): but if USA wins, you have to sing our anthem
Im Ngamer (9:15:44 PM): just on audio though
RyanWhiteGoose (9:15:46 PM): deal
Im Ngamer (9:15:49 PM): nice!
Im Ngamer (9:16:05 PM): second of all, I want it to be "top fives count" for each round
Im Ngamer (9:16:16 PM): for example let's say that 10 americans send in their picks
Im Ngamer (9:16:59 PM): I'd just like all the best 5 to count, throw out the rest
RyanWhiteGoose (9:17:07 PM): I guess we can do top 5 count
Im Ngamer (9:17:10 PM): that way it's encouraging to get more people to pred for your country
RyanWhiteGoose (9:17:13 PM): that way we don't even need the same amount of contenders
Im Ngamer (9:17:17 PM): and if they do bad it doesn't hurt you
RyanWhiteGoose (9:17:24 PM): ok, but can Canada take some non Canadians?
Im Ngamer (9:18:33 PM): hm... okay sure, you can have other countries

I'm at work right now, just realized I have to post. I don't care if it's a few minutes over the deadline, I'm not watching any games or have any idea what's happened today.

As a result, these posts are going to be completely random and have no thought put into them at all. Do not use this to judge me as a person, or rate my attractiveness as a potential mate.

If the sharks lose again tonight, I'm not sure what I'm going to think about them and the god damn playoffs. No matter the team, seed, whatever, they choke it up every year and I'm hoping this year changes that but game 1 sure didn't look like it...

heh heh, I was the only one who had faith in the Ducks (or more precisely, SJ's non existant playoff presence) and look where I am now! As long as Washington continues to play like Washington, I should be set to go 8/8.
