* 2009 Elite Summer Contest [Nightly wiff Pic Updates!] *
« on: May 28, 2009, 04:01:00 am »

First things first:  the days of Summers at the Elite being a one man show are long over.  If this Contest is going to be a success, we need your help!  Check the post below this one to see some of the ways you could lend a hand and help make this a fun next 2 months.

Second things second: we're once again doing bracket predictions directly on thengamer (whoo, no having to sign up for bracketmaker!).  If you'd like to try your hand a predicting the winners here in '09, check the bottom of this post for that link.

Thirdly, let's look at some fun stats!

* There were over 480 Contest nominations sent in during the past week (pretty solid)

* More than 110 different Eliters received at least one nomination (whoa, way more than I expected!  and gosh, wheat's pred of 30 sure was awful.  awful, I say!)

Remember that, for the first time, the Elite as a whole made all the decisions as to who got into the '09 bracket, and the noms were also the only thing used to determine player seedings.  So, let's take a look at the bracket you created, shall we?

The 2009 Elite Summer Contest!

Oh I should mention that, just for the sake of variety, the bracket this year has been split up into 8 "divisions" of 8 people a piece (rather than the usual 4 x 16).  So the top seed will play against a #8 to start, then if he takes two more matches after that he'll have won his division and will go on to play whoever won the division below him in an Elite Eight matchup.  Also, all 8 divisions are named after the person you elected to be their #1 seed.

Got it?  Good.  Then let's start out by going on

A Golden Goosehunt
1. Ryan "Goose" White
8. *Play-In Winner*

4. Steve "Come" Bryze
5. Wabs

3. Rayan "PerfectAce" I.
6. Brent "wheat" Wingert

2. David Clemens
7. Matthijs ten Ham

Yes, to no one's surprise (I think?) the always controversial Goose had an excellent showing in the nomination phase and earns a top seed as a result.  He'll start off his Championship quest by playing the winner of the Sunday's play-in match (see the end of this post for more details on that).  The highlight of this division has to be the super charged R1 battle between Elite legends Come and Wabs- shocking that two guys this popular have to meet up so early, but I guess that's a quirk of the nom system.  However I also think both lower matched could provide some major sparks as well; sure Clemens is one of the all time greats when it comes to the games, but will he be able to survive one of the strongest Summer Contestants in history?  And wheat finds himself in a similar position against another extremely gifted player- don't count out either of these upsets, IMO!

If you're holding out for a hero, look no further than this next division- its packed full of them.  Just be careful you don't start

ODin' on Hero In
1. Glen "SupaOdin" Stevens
8. Mark "Poker Mark" Rayson

4. Greg Woll
5. Ryan "Woody" Lockwood

3. Adam Matis
6. Ian "Fal" Fallens

2. Robert "Shep" Shepherd
7. BloodE

You read that correctly- Chat and board favorite OD is this year's most surprising #1 seed!  That doesn't mean a free pass to the Elite Eight however- far from it, as he'll have to best longtime Chatter Mark Rayson before taking on whoever comes out of what should be a very interesting old school/new school GE tussle between Woll and Woody.  If Greg makes it through we might get to watch an all-star Ohio slugfest between Matis and himself.  That's by no means a lock though, as the always surprising Fal stands in his way along with two other Brits:  Shep, who is coming in hot after knocking out OD, Matthijs ten Ham, and Snap last season, and BloodE, who is coming in hot after, um... well at least he hasn't been banned in a little while!

Moving on, here's a division headlined by an old school legend most famous for setting one of the league's sexiest PRs:

(din mor) Infiltration 1:52
1. Infil
8. Karl Jobst

4. Axel "OB" Andersson
5. Alex Anderson

3. Max "RedBull" Bout
6. Nathan Stinson

2. Eddie Lovins
7. Ryan "Your Eliteness" Dwyer

I hear Bully wants to invite Nate to a meeting... to meet his demise, that is!  But first Andersson and Anderson will go head to head in hopes of drawing first blood in the Alex vs Axel feud (a rivalry that threatens to really heat up this season, as we have 4 of them in the bracket!)  Meanwhile Eddie figures to have his hands full with a former Champion and well respected updater.  Although Infil's the top dog here seed-wise, I certainly wouldn't put it past Lovins or Bully to pull off the upset... this is one wide open division in my opinion.

Our last division is lead by an Eliter who, much like OD, has really seen his popularity skyrocket in recent months.  Crack your fingers, grab a plastic guitar, and let's try to score

987,874 TtFaF Expert
1. Patrik "highscore" Nilsson
8. Jack William Wedge

4. Trent Hovis
5. Scott "IsThatAGoodThing" Abbey
(aka Flash aka Brick aka Thingy)

3. Hugo "Carathorn" Van Der Wolk
6. Eric "drag" Tapani

2. Paddy "Neo" Johannessen
7. failurewarning

Whoa, talk about your high scores!  Unfortunately for Patrik though, drawing a ton of noms didn't earn him a very easy opponent... I'm really surprised that a guy as well loved as Jack ended up an 8 seed.  If Jack isn't able to manage the upset, oh well, at least the next match is sure to be hilarious as Thingy takes on GE and VA veteran Trent Hovis.  Afterwards Cara and his fans will be tested by another big Virginia presence in drag (...wait, not sure that came out right).  With so many question marks surrounding the other Eliters in this group, perhaps the community's all-time Boy Wonder is poised to make a run to the Elite Eight?

There's the whole left side of the bracket, now we head over to the right.  And let me just say, you're going to want to set your timeclocks to make sure you wake up in time for the first poll in this division!

THIS IS GARBAGE
1. Sterling Neblett
8. Ben "Paragon" Gorman

4. Axel Zakrisson
5. Simon "Scaredsim" Sternis

3. David "DK" Kovaz
6. Quentin "Silver Angel" Meunier

2. Henning "Darky Maian" Bloom
7. Randy "Disco" Buikema

Longtime Goldeneye Champion Sterling drew a ton of respect from Elite nominators this season, which was great to see.  But does he have what it takes to knock out Paragon, his perfect PD counterpart?  If not the winner of Axel/Simon figures to make a deep run into the bracket.  European favorite Henning figures to be sorely tested by the Elite's first ever Dual Champ, but my favorite match of this division (and heck, maybe of the whole round!) has got to be DK/SA.  Traditionally the previous year's Bronze Medal winner goes on to take the Gold in the following season, but the extremely well liked SA could very well end that streak by knocking out DK right off the bat!  Talk about your difficult bracket paths!

Now for my favorite division of them all.  We would be so happy, you and me. No one there to tell us what to do.  In

An Octopussy's Garden
1. Phil "octo" McCanna
8. Brandon "Bcks" Sanford

4. Tyler "Thiradell" Wishall
5. David "marsh" Gibbons

3. Steven "Comet" Haley
6. Brian "PDO" King

2. Illari "Illu" Pekkala
7. Brad "Cyberwrath" Cutler

I don't think anyone will be too shocked by the ever-popular octo earning a 1 seed... otherwise though this group is just filled with intriguing matchups.  Will young upstart Third be able to pull a Goose '06 and knock out the legendarily handsome marsh?  Does Comet have what it takes to go toe to toe with a beloved fellow Canadian like PDO?  Will Cyber remember to wear a seatbelt on the way to work on the day of his match?  The possibilities are endless!

This second to last division is without question Neo's favorite- and with good reason!

Jimboomba, Queensland
1. Jim "Jimbo" Barrett
8. Bryan Youse

4. Jim "ShadowZero" Soderlund
5. Dan Cervone

3. Dayle Steinke
6. Luke "homeonice" Szklarz

2. Adam "Durk" Durkcaz
7. Henrik Norgren

Wait a minute... Jimbo, earning a one seed?  The guy who lost to Dirk Olson twice?  Believe your eyes!  Bryan Youse will do his best to ensure that the proud Jimbo-loses-by-1-vote-to-Zeebo's-friend tradition continues in 2009, followed by a pretty cool PD/GE setup between SZ and the always dangerous Cervone.  And heck, I have no idea WHAT to think of the bottom of this pack.  Who's even the favorite out of that foursome?  Dayle?  Durk?  Luke?  Beats me!

And finally... you think a 5 vote total's going to win you a match?  This ain't John Shoop running this Division- it's the most aggressive QB in the league, and he's going deep into the tournament this season!

UNLEASH THE DRAGON
1. Josh "QB" Lay
8. Greg "FB" Lewis

4. Nick "SpeedRunTrainer" Rotmeyer
5. Liz Mimms

3. Pier "PYL" Yves Lemire
6. Shawn "afanoftherings" Johnson

2. Thomas "wiff" Andrews
7. Denis Lucid

Oh man, I may have to retract that earlier statement regarding DK/SA... how could a match as ridiculous as SRT versus Liz not be someone's favorite of the round?  Although in all honesty PYL/fanny shouldn't be far behind!  And Denis Lucid, what the devil- this whole division is just a barrel of laughs!
---

Okay, there's the full bracket!  Well, 63 of the spots at least; there was a four-way tie for the 64th and final position in the tournament this season, which means we'll have to run a Play-In match on Sunday May 31st to decide who will make the cut and get to face off against Goose in round one!  And that Play-In will be between

* Nolan Baucom
* Alex Hollingsworth
* Greg Larkin
* Kingpin

May the best man win!
---

Now that you've looked over the bracket, would you like to see how well you can do at predicting this season's winners?  Give this link a visit to fill in your own official prediction bracket, which will be automatically updated with your new score all season long!

http://www.thengamer.com/elite/2009/

(the full bracket is listed on the front, then you can click "MAKE YOUR PREDS!" on top to get your entry in)

Now last season we ran into a spot of trouble when someone *cough* entered five or six brackets using fake names.  I'm not going to spend time putting in extra security- let's just not be stupid, and everyone enter just one bracket using their own name, okay?
---

Okay, that's all folks.  Here's looking forward to another enjoyable summer!

And now to answer the question everyone is wondering.

What can I do to help out this Summer?

#1. Find a recent picture of yourself that you like, and post a link to it here or IM it to wiff.  (Remember that if you don't, wiff reserves the right to use whatever weird picture he wants for you- you might not like it, but no complaints allowed!).

#2. Update your bio out on the SRW to bring it up to date for this year:

http://speedrunwiki.com/Main_Page

If you don't have a page out there yet, talk to Shep on AIM- he's an incredibly involved and helpful person who is sure to take time out of his day to set you on the right path.

#3. Participate!  Send in a prediction bracket, post your thoughts on some matchups, discuss the bracket in Chat- get into the spirit of this wacky little summer competition of ours and I think you'll find you rather enjoy it after a while.

#4. Sign up for one of the following important Contest positions that we're looking to fill (these will be updated with names once people sign up for the spots)

* Vote Collector: ???
- DK did this for us last year and did a very nice job, so if he wants this position back he's got it.  HOWEVER this is going to be a much different position than in years past- we're taking the focus away from AIM and putting it more on thengamer this year (more details on this later) and so there will be very little "collecting" of votes needed- the main thing for this position is to be around at midnight EST each night so you can take predictions, announce results, and run FVs in Chat.  This person also gets access to special pages on the site that only he or I would ever manage.  Also, we're going to once again attempt to get the vote collector access to update the top of the boards so that Come and I won't always have to change that.

* Contest Reporter: Comet
- octo did this last year, but I think he said he'll be unable to continue his duties in '09.  As reporter you're the only person allowed to post in the matchups and results topic every day- we're looking for someone who will be around almost every night around FV time so that they'll be able to see the result in Chat, then come into the topic and post a short writeup for all to see.  Stuff like who got off to a big lead in the match, when did the comeback start, who did Europe side with, what does this result mean for next round, etc.  And then a brief preview of the upcoming match.

* Spread Bet Superhero: ???
- QB and Shep have done this in the past, but don't know if they want to for this season.  I'm going to update this system so that all spread bets get tracked automatically this Summer, so this shouldn't be a hard job at all- we just need someone experienced who will be able to set a line for the upcoming match that they think will be equal action on both sides.  Once the new match starts they can go into the secret page (once again, only this updater and I will have access) and set that line within the system.  It would also be nice if this person would post overall spread results in the Results topic every once in a while to keep people updated.

* Match Pic Dude: wiff
- This job is taken.
* http://s75.photobucket.com/albums/i308/wiwf/Summer%20Contest%202009/

* First Vote Updater: ???
- Basically you just have to be around at midnight most nights.  You would keep track of who took 1st 2nd 3rd in FV and then update the table out on the wiki to include the latest result.  Easy stuff, but very helpful- it becomes a pain if we fall too many days behind on updating this.  Oh also you would post FV results updates everyone once in a while in the Results topic.

* Bracket Preds Updater: Third
- With my new system in place basically all your work is done for you... all that's left is posting results in the topic every couple weeks or something.  You could come in more often to say things like "if SA wins the match tonight there will be no perfect brackets left!", little updates like that are cool.

* Euro FV Organizer: Fal (and SZ?)
- SZ has always done this in the past, don't know if he plans to again?  Basically it's the same as normal FV, except held during the afternoon in America so that Europeans are able to attend without staying up until the middle of the night.  Generally this is one of the more fun and silly side contests of the season, hopefully someone picks it back up!

* Contest Bio Updater: Jimbo, with help from Shep
- Shep has done this in the past, but, yikes.  The job here is to make sure everyone has a short bio (and hopefully a picture, maybe a couple external links) up on the wiki by the time their match comes up.  This shouldn't be nearly as hard as in past years since I think only 6-7 people don't have anything on the SRW, but it would be nice if even those who do have bios of some sort could get help with bringing their info up to date.

Hmm, might be forgetting something.  I'll make an edit to this post if so; watch this spot.

In any case, yes, this will be way more fun for you (and everyone else) if you get involved, so sign up for a position!  Go go go!

I'll do the Euro FV again if you like. I would do the Vote Collector thing but with it being 5am my time its very unlikely i can get there every day so i'll have to pass on that one!

As for my picture i will post this later when i get home from work.

I think someone else should go ahead and collect votes this year. I could do it in a pinch, but I'm going to be out of town for the first 2 matches (and likely the last couple of matches assuming the contest runs into August). Another obstacle is my work schedule, which sometimes has me getting up as early as 4-5:00am, and staying up well past midnight on these days would leave me a bit sleep deprived.

I would gladly do it again, but these circumstances would make it difficult, so it's best if someone else collects (and makes the final four as a result ).

No help from me this year, I'll be graduating, moving, job hunting, etc. But I look forward to the contest greatly!!

I tallied the noms this year and was shocked by a lot of things. I think it's great because the noms had little to do with past contest success. Making the seeds really irrelevant a lot of the time, and created a really fun bracket.

Fun fact, it took TWO nominations to get into the bracket (as you could have guessed, from Ng saying a small tie for 64th). I'll do a bracket analysis... later!

I think the fact that the Cara Crew all have high seeds goes to show that we aren't just some small clique on here.

Like Octo I dont really have time this year to get involved with running anything.

That being said the SRW bios are mostly in pretty good shape anyway after last years monumental overhaul. People who already have a bio are generally going to be ok I think, unless something spectacular happened in their lives in the past year they wish to share on their page. I guess the ones that do need some updating would be anyone still playing GE/PD. But since thats like only 2 or 3 people in the bracket it shouldnt be much work

There are a few new people and as Jon said if you need some help with setting up your own page or updating/creating somebody elses, then contact me any time on AIM and I'll assist. Since vacuuming the inside of my PC the other day the computer problems I've had in the last 2 weeks have vanished, so I'll be online more again.

Yes, should have mentioned that as in the past (except for last year when we expanded to 128) our former Champs will not be competing in the main bracket. But, I have some ideas we could use so that people would still get to support them during the season- maybe in some just for fun "bonus matches" that would run underneath the main poll on some days. We ought to be able to have some flexibility there thanks to the new voting system that I'm putting together right now.

I've updated the second post to include Third and Fal in their positions- let's get some more volunteers so we can fill the rest!

We do not officially predict the Play-In matchup, so bracket preds will stay open until the results of the first match are announced. So, 11:59pm EST on Monday night.

Great to see the contest back again. I'd love to nominate myself for one of your official positions, but we all know my track record, so instead I'll probably just keep and eye on the Wiki and clean up anything I come across.

Sorry about above post, that was my fault for posting with wrong account!

I would've loved to have done the match write-ups, but it doesn't really work with me being +5 from FV time

The favorites for this year's contest should be Octo and DK.  I'd say Octo should start at something like a +225 and DK at a +370.  It is extremely difficult to predict who are favorited after these men, but I think suggesting Patrik Nilsson or Sterling Neblett would be reasonable as both have been active gamers forever and have both attended the Virginia meet.  While men like Glen Stevens and myself tend to do well in these sorts of situations, an outright win simply is not reasonable.

We ought to be able to have some flexibility there thanks to the new voting system that I'm putting together right now.

if octo and DK are the favorites, why did we get matched up in the round of 8? Lame for one of us! Heck, both!

Change of plans, play-in match will start on SUNDAY night (as in 23.5 hours from now) and then the first official match will follow. This gives people some much needed extra time to send in their own brackets; go for it!

http://thengamer.com/elite/2009/makepredictions.php

But guys, I'm not kidding when I say that we won't be able to have this Contest if more people aren't willing to help. We still need an FV person, match results writeup person, and someone (or two people working together) to set the spreads. Spreads could be done by anyone but with the way the schedules work out FV/match writeups pretty much have to be taken care of by a North American. Someone step up to the plate!

EDIT - As to Greg's question, Nolan/Lark/kingpin/Alex H are in the play-in match over him because they got more nominations from the Elite.  Greg's probably the person I'm most surprised at not making the cut, but even so it wasn't exactly a shocker just because it was a really bad showing all around from the older PD players.  Guys we've almost always seen like Dman, Expert, Sam, Fro, Cook, and Otto didn't get support; heck, even Paragon was only barely able to get in.

I can't volunteer to be any help, because I'll be very busy over the next month or two. I'll send in a bracket, though.

Not necessarily, you could change FV and make it 12 midnight european time. At least there is more chance of the europeans coming out and helping out with the jobs needed. It would be 7pm florida time, it may be a big change to the north americans but i am sure it won't be much of a harm changing it for one year. Otherwise we might start and have absolutely nobody to take votes, fv, writeups etc and it could just prove to be a disaster.

Well as I said before, I can do vote collecting if nobody else steps up. It will just be very difficult. Also, I'm out of town until Monday night and the internet connection here isn't exactly reliable, so I can't guarantee I would be able to do FV for the playin. I'll be moving at the end of July - early August (which is likely right around the time the final matches will take place), and it would be almost impossible for me to do anything on those days.

Hey, I can assist with Euro FV. Not sure if I can attend all evenings but whenever I'm online I will be able to, some might be a few mins late since I usually raid to 00:00 a couple days per week.
