| Why are you guys putting gay names on the pics? I had no idea that it was Alex on the match-up today, and I check the boards at least 2 times a day. People don't necessarily enter the chat (or have him on AIM, for that matter).
Well, we already have a place where being the best at Goldeneye and Perfect Dark is consistently rewarded. It's called the Goldeneye and Perfect Dark rankings. If the Summer Contest was determined by how only by how talented a speedrunner you are, where would be the fun in that?
As for speedrunning not mattering whatsoever in terms of popularity, I have to disagree. Talented players who dominated the rankings and impressed us at the games have always had an upper hand when it came to Contest time. If you were a great Champion and also a helpful or nice or funny or entertaining human being who's fun to talk to, you're going to be very popular and do great. (Look at how well marsh and Disco and Paragon and Wouter have always done.) If you were a great player but also a pain to deal with everywhere outside of the PR topic, speedrunning talent can only take you so far. I wasn't going to post about this but Jon gave good arguments (as always), so let me just say a few words. I'm aware of that... another good example is Shade, thinking of it. Someone that used to play at a top level, was a forum moderator and a nice friend over AIM, so close to maxed
An interesting note: YE was an updater here for a while, speedran PD a lot, was a very important guy..but yet Lovins is going to crush him, while Matthijs beat me and I honestly dont know anything about him and he has been inactive for years...where is the sense in that?
Patrik "meeting" Nilsson met up with this Matthjis ten Ham back in 2006. He thought Matthijs was possibly one of the coolest and most friendly guys he has ever met.
As for the Summer Contest I would like to think it inspires natives to not just be speed runners around here, but more developing friendships and being polite or friendly to people (cause why shouldn't one in the first place). Speedrunning as in having great times in PD/GE would leave out most old schools and other very gifted gamers. Old school people have helped during the years with rising new strategies and techniques that most newcomers these days take for granted. Most if not all individuals in the contest have something in common; games. Some folks even have world records outside the world of the-elite which on their side are as insane as any other GE or PD WR. Also funny how the two persons that cares the least about this "competition" have the greatest post count on the last page complaining about it. Let us all hug and play some video games! Clemens: you lost to Matthijs because he is a far nicer person than you are and is a board and GE legend.
YE will lose to Eddie because he's not active at all anymore, plus the fact that Eddie is an old school player who's fairly recently become active again. Also, he's one of the most polite and helpful people on here, and he helped me immensely in getting depot 26 (for example). Vitor: Liz went to the Virginia meet, thus she's known to quite a significant number of people. Also she chats a lot as well. Funny how Clemens talks about the lack of votes for speedrunners, and then votes for Nate in my match.
So basically you just chat a lot and you get what, 15, 20 free votes? Ok, so let's change all the wiki bios to funny quotes with din mor or lemonparty that people have said over chat, since it looks like that it's more important than being a dual champ.
Would this be reflecting the fact that you guys can do a lot of nice stuff (this contest system included) but can't be motivated enough to change that damn main page that has many broken links, and nothing new on it in like 5 years? This whole thing is about speedrunning (let me remind you that it's the GE/PD WORLD RANKINGS for god sakes), but it seems like you are caring more about "useless" stuff (Euro FV, preds) than attracting new people to the ranks - and yes you KNOW that are still good players outthere, just look at Lucid. And just one thing about Matthijs, he's inactive and all but he deserves all the votes because, from what I remember, he's indeed a nice person and has contributed a lot to the-elite, and was a top player at his days, so it's not unfair at all for him to win over Clemens.
LOL @ Clemens losing to Matthijs. Easily the most epic funny shit I've seen in the contest. AHAHHAHAHAHAHHIEUIHEIUHEIUHIEUHIEUHIUEHIUEHIUEEIUEIUE I hope Clemens pulls an Mgay.
Vitor and Clemens are only bitter because they don't know how to interact in a social environment and rather than doing something about it, they take their anger out by complaining.
Not to say anything about the likelihood of me winning a match, but just to clear up misconceptions about myself: I'm primarily a chatter these days, but I was a big PD player back in the day. I peaked at 6th place and was a mainstay in the top 10 for several months back 8 months after PD game out. I retired early, though, and didn't un-retire like a lot of players did. I still don't have Defection 6, because I never un-retired to get it.
The contest is largely a popularity contest, but popularity is a lot of things... it's not just being in chat all day (though, since chat is a big part of the community now, that's a factor). Being a good speedrunner can help your popularity, but if you generally avoid people and don't enjoy making friends in the community outside GE or PD, you probably won't do well in the contest. I say this not passing any judgment about specific people, just as a general comment. If you have left the community for several years and no longer contribute, you are less likely to do well, even if you were a great speedrunner. If you happen to have befriended the people who are doing the voting, you'll do well. This is pretty straightforward. That said, some people do take the results a bit seriously. Player X beating Player Y means nothing more than X is currently more known/more popular with the current community than Y. It says nothing about who was a better GE/PD speedrunner, and really, nor should it. Also, "who the heck is person X?" is a weird comment, because the newcomers to the community could easily say the same thing about, say, me, if I had left the community when I retired. Just like newcomers may not know about the founding fathers and the older school players, some people who've been around a while may not know some of the newer people involved in the community (like Liz, as an example). It doesn't mean that they do/don't deserve to be in the contest any less, though. Great post and wonderful last paragraph infil.
We picked this year's fucking bracket... I'm SHOCKED that as an active PDer and board checker that Vitor does not know who Denis Lucid is, and in fact, I believe he is inventing facts to back up his argument; a very immature thing to do. Grow up Vitor and accept that you are going to get your ass kicked in the contest. If you're not happy about it, then go do something about it. Um, Vitor knows who Lucid is, he is just surprised that he made it into the contest... because Lucid doesn't exist.
"Vitor and Clemens are only bitter because they don't know how to interact in a social environment and rather than doing something about it, they take their anger out by complaining."
Says the Mr. I-can't-talk-to-a-girl. Don't say shit, this is a fucking internet forum. And also, I'm from Brazil if you don't remember, so it's not the same when "interacting" in that "social environment" you're talking about. If Clemens has social problems, it's a different matter Infil, I know a little bit about you, it's not like you suck or anything like that at all (Dance Dance Revolution is fucking dumb but whatever And Ryan, you're joking right? Ok I won't post anymore. What's done is done. And last year's Contest was the best (with much more people in it), it's the only way to be fair to everyone. Yeah because my decision not to ever have kissed a girl who wanted to kiss me is completely relevant to this conversation.
Last year's contest was about the worst one ever with so many losers getting 0-2 votes... where is the fun in that? The extra 2 people just took away from the rivalries between the top 2 contestants in each match. You're clearly angry that you're not in this year's contest... so do something about it or shut up. Lol @ "I won't post anymore." Who are you? David Clemens? Vitor:
Yeah, Wiki bios are totally useless (and biased, as they're typically written by the person themselves). I didn't mean you should read them and say "wow, what an amazing guy!". But if you're curious as to who I am and what I've contributed to the community, you can read it to get a bit of an idea. Barring that, you could ask other people or talk to me to get a better idea, if you're interested. I remember talking to you about my visit to Brazil two years ago or so, and discussing Portuguese a bit. As for Karl, I never got to know him myself, though I do know he had an excellent PD/GE career. Since I don't know him, I don't know the answers to these questions: Was he a well-liked champion? Did he get along with people in the forums and on AIM? Was he stuck up or snobbish? Did he have a few enemies on the boards? The answers to these questions may indicate how certain people voted, even though he was a good player. Also, I'm not sure which people voted in my match, but I'm sure there are some PD players who voted for me over Karl even just based solely on my PD skill. Karl was a better player than me, but perhaps some people voted for me because they remember a particular WR I got, or because they were active at the same time I was active, or... other PD-related reasons. Just because he's the PD champ doesn't mean he's guaranteed to win the PD vote. Again, it all comes down to who is voting. And for the record, I've been a part of this community for years longer than Karl. I was one of the first 20 people on the site, and I've been in chat as a regular for at least six years (being a computer science student and being on your computer a lot will do that to you). I like to think I'm a pretty big part of this community and have "accomplished a lot of things at what this site is about" too, and more than just "active in chat for one year". That being said, I'm surprised at the result of the Karl match as well. I think it's just a combination of the fact that I'm still here, active in chat, and Karl is not. My contributions (KotHBot in particular) just seem to be a bit more relevant to the community at hand; it has less to do with who has the more "meaningful" contributions and it's just more a matter of timing. I have respect for Karl and what he accomplished in GE/PD. Randomly: Though my signature references DDR, I play a lot more games than that. My WR is actually in a music game called Amplitude, and I play pretty much any music game released and try to master it. Ok I'm Clemens
I don't remember people hating Karl here.. but anyways. Hah I know you play a lot of other games Infil, it's just that DDR is dumb and I wanted to say it And I didn't get mad because I'm not in. I got mad because I'm not in and other people that should be in aren't and DENIS NOT-SURE-IF-EXISTS LUCID , LIZ WTF, FLASH WHATEVER are in. I never cared about the contest, never asked for votes etc etc, the furthest I went in it was 2nd round rofl but it's a little bit careless to not let me (and other "important" people if you wanna put it that way) in and put those random people instead. Fine? wiff, please use this for my pic

The elite voted... the contestants weren't selected by some exclusive group. They were selected by us... it's the most democratic way to do it. You weren't chosen and others were. Deal with it. Honestly, you claim to be some big, grown man who can deal with life's issues and all, but the way you're dealing with this, you'd think you're less of a little boy than me. Everyone had their chance to vote, and everyone's vote counted equally. Kwitcherbitchin.
I'll say that this years contest isn't as great as it has been in previous years, however there is still much interest in it and shocks to be had. Who would have thought i would have beaten Matis? I for one had Matis down for a landslide win but things don't usually turn out the way you expect.
Greg as goose already said the only reason you didn't make it into the contest was because people didn't nominate you, i honestly thought no-one would nominate me but i was wrong. It was a good way to make the contest this year rather than having a full selection committee and it was just unfortunate that you didn't make the cut. Durk is a good example, how many years has he been around and only just managed to get into the contest for the past 2 years? I beat Karl last year and i was never a good speedrunner, i wasn't surprised in the slightest about Infil winning in a landslide as he is a great guy and a great person to chat to whereas Karl is hardly around and when he is he just posts random crap about how gay someone is. Did Vitor just get mad at me for being in this? I don't think anyone on the forums know me anyway, haha.
I remember you from that pig picture you did, and it fucking freaked me out
Ok, end of story, it's a fucking summer contest anyway. I even installed AIM on my pc again and entered chat last night lolol :F And well, I like big posts and I can not lie, so that's why I started this damn discussion! Sorry for that. Wtf is Trent Hovis doing in the contest at not me? I forgot that you gave preferential treatment to fags.
Not sure if this is the right place to post, but my match is tomorrow and I suppose I should say something.
Well I obviously can't really compete with someone that is very dedicated to this community, so my main goal is pity votes. I've been around since 2001, and while I haven't really posted too much, I've lurked in the shadows and been around during every Elite milestone. Since you know Illu will win anyway, feel free to vote for me and maybe keep things interesting! I'm not really sure how I got into this contest, but hopefully enough pity votes won't crush my self-esteem too badly! USA! USA! Marsh beating Thiradell is a travesty to the elite.
Marsh has never done shit for the elite. He hasn't even been here or posted in 8 years, and he beats literally the nicest eliter I've ever talked to, along with our current updater. What the fuck is wrong with you people? ..
Quote from: RWhiteGoose Who are you to determine who should be in and not, Vitor? Quote from: RWhiteGoose Marsh beating Thiradell is a travesty to the elite.
