What is your biggest, uncommon, unnatural fear?
« on: June 04, 2009, 01:45:00 am »
Excluding common fears (snakes, spiders, heights, enclosed spaces, public speaking [none of which I personally am afraid of]) and fears which are something you can't control or are forces in nature (storms, dying, etc) what frightens you the most?

Basically, I want to hear something weird.  Something unexpected.  If anyone busts in here and says "I'm afraid of crowds" or "I'm afraid of meeting new people" then I will ask them to leave.  I want a weird ass fear.  Hear my example and then post, since my example is a perfect example of what I'm looking for.

I am not afraid of fires or excessive heat, in fact my room is usually in the 25-28 degree Celsius range due to many heavy devices in service constantly, and every free night at my cottage I will have a massive bonfire putting hundreds of acres of forest at risk, but I am very frightened by exposed elements and boiling water.  When I look into an oven and see the glowing orange of a heated element, I can't help but be severely irked.  Also, during preparation of pasta, when it comes time for me to pour the boiling water into a colander, I ask anyone else in the kitchen to leave in fear we will accidentally bump and spill the boiling water over each other.

So there you go.  Exposed, heated elements and boiling water are my biggest, uncommon fear.  Pretty strange that these things bother me when looking at my most recent facebook display picture (http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/photos-ak-snc1/v4548/224/44/1657860756/n1657860756_732813_2455029.jpg) but they do!

Now what is your weird, uncommon fear?

Well i fear open space, and i freeze and crouch down when i look at the sky, especially when its a clear day. I need to be near cover or have something to hold onto for me to feel safe. I can adjust to it, but that initial fear still grips me, had it since i was a kid. That might be common i don't know.

I don't like heights (yeah yeah common), so crossing a motorway bridge has provided problems in the past. Though the fear isn't so much the height and such, but the fear of me jumping off. I seem to get this urge to want to jump off, almost like im not in control of my body.

I think i fear i'd do something stupid, like for instance boiling water: i've had the urge in the past to throw it at somebody's face, a weird curiosity thing that i can't explain. I never act out on these urges or owt, but sometimes i feel like my body wants to do it, while my mind watches. Happens with different things as well.

I guess arachnophobia is one of the most common fears and I used to be scared to death if I saw one spider. That's off topic though, you wanted not to include the common fears.

I also used to be afraid of crane flies ("harkrankar" in Swedish) when I was younger. I couldn't even be in the same room together with one crane fly. I remember I hated summer due to that. Same with spiders obviously, but now I'm more or less "cured" but I still feel uncomfortable if I see a spider and I immediately go trying to eliminate it. Spiders is like the only sort of animal I really hate.

Sometimes I feel the same as Shane mentioned, I want to do one thing, but my mind tells me not to do it. I also think I got a very mild form of claustrophobia which has decreased since I was a child.

Edit: Electricity, that is something I am really considerate about. I mean I'm often afriad of getting a shock from an electric fence and I'm very careful whenever I plug in cables and such

I guess the best one I can think of is how I fear eternity. And it's weird because I'm not talking like being scared of going to Hell or something; I actually fear eternity in general. I guess something about my mind being unable to comprehend my existence never ending...hard to explain.

I also consider my fear of spiders strange in that I've never been the least afraid of bees; in fact when I was younger, my brother and I used to kill them for fun. We'd use either water guns or just smack them out of the air with our bare hands so they'd be momentarily stunned on the ground, then scoop them up with these toy eggs with small holes in them, toss them in our pool, and let them sink and drown. Probably killed over 100 bees doing that. And somehow, I've never been stung my entire life. But if I see a spider in a corner on my ceiling...fuck that, I'll get someone else to kill it.

I also have an extreme fear of losing my penis. It's probably some combination of me always having my penis outside of my pants when I'm sitting at home, always using knives and having knives on me, and being a virgin. I know it's probably a natural fear many guys have but I thought I'd post it here anyways.

Lovins, I absolutely fell out of my chair in hysterical laughter hearing that you're afraid of your Eternity. hahahahaha you think THAT'S SCARY!!??? Wait until you realise that you're a finite being who'll one day have no concept of eternity, singularity, and this conversation ever happening. Now THATS scary, one day no one will ever know that you existed, they wont or will ever care, and it simply won't matter because you too will be worm food. If you're going to be afraid of something don't be afraid of eternity, be afraid of the fact that you, me, none of this will ever last in any sense- ever. Eternity would be a Godsend.

My fear? Erectile Dysfunction.

Way to steal a philosophy from Fight Club. Is your penis the only functional part of your body or something?

Goose, I'm sorry but I don't understand your pop culture reference from a ten year old has-been film. What part is from Fight Club? The fact that lovins is afraid of FOREVER? Or the fact that one day maybe I won't be able to plug your mother in her fat stinky as.shole?

I'm afraid of crabs (the one's in the ocean mind you). When I was young I tried to pick one up and got pinched badly and have since been scared.
Also, I have an intense fear of throwing up. Obviously no one likes to, but I get extreme anxiety before it happens. I hate the diaphram spasms and the feeling of it coming up. To me, it's a fate worse than death.
Embrace the grind.

Lark that was a fear i always had too. When i was ill, i'd do anything to prevent myself from throwing up, i hated the build up to the big moment lol. Which meant i felt even worse cause i was holding in the bad stuff. Now of course i'd sooner put my fingers down my throat and induce it, than feel like crap.

i guess this isn't really unnatural to me, but some might think that it is!

driving past lorry's.

well not really a fear but I dont like the feeling from time to time due to the accident I made a topic about several months back. I had quite bad troubles before but I have tried to face it and drive past lorry's when I get the chance to kinda get used to it again wich I think I am, just not fully yet. Otherwise I cant really think of any fears that I have, I am a pretty natural person to most stuff.

well to fear can also mean "to hold in great reverence or awe," which is what i mean when i say i fear God. not a fear like "ZOMG, God is gonna squish me for farting or for thinking about screwing someone other than my wife!" God COULD very easily destroy me for any reason He desired and i couldn't say or do anything about it, but that is NOT what i fear about Him. i'm not worried in the least bit about anything like that! i have a fear (or deeply profound reverence) of Him because He is so much greater than anyone on this earth in every way! i have no worries or fears of any person on this earth. what is the worst thing that any one person (or group of people) could possibly do to me? well, the worst thing that i could think of is that ultimately they could kill me! but hey, that's just giving me a speedy trip to heaven to spend the rest of eternity with God! which is what i, as a Christian desire anyways, so i win! no, in the end, i "fear," in the biblical sense of the word (which, again, is to hold in awe of) my God and Savior, Jesus Christ, the giver of all things... including my life!

that might not make any sense, Max (or anyone else who wonders about such things) but i hope i helped clarify the usage of the word "fear." but maybe i just muddied it up instead...

I used to hate throwing up, almost a phobia of it actually....
But lately I've often stuck my fingers down my throat on a bad night. It feels amazing afterwoulds imo.

I have a fear of the world itself lately. and what it's coming to. North Korea/Swineflu/terrorists that are moving extremely close to where I live(or at least a couple rings have been busted lately a short drive away from here)/generally getting old/thinking of family and friends and what it would be like to lose them *because it's going to happen one day* and I worry a lot over having no work because of this recession, and the amount of stress it puts on the family all that combined sometimes makes me want to get out of the house and live life in a short but fast kinda way. And I'm getting a really shitty attitude nowadays aswel because of it. Like..... "I don't give a fuck how much I drink, if I kill myself then I'd rather die that way than by someone elses hand".... and I'm being a slag lately and not using protection(if she's on the pill) because I think the world is going to go downhill and fucking fast so i'm just having as much fun as I can before my time is up.

Another fear I get everytime I leave the house is bumping into my ex. I feel a lot for her still and I havn't seen her in months. But I can't leave the house without thinking "shit what If I see her now, I might not be looking my best. or I'm going to see her with someone else, that I know....... I dunno. fucking sucks though.
That is a big part of why I am sleeping around so much because I want it to get back to her to hurt her, just like she done to me.

I gone way off topic, sorry guys

I think having an clingy-ass ex like kingpin would be a natural fear for anyone.

EDIT: It sounds like you're suffering from depression/anxiety, I would see a psychologist if I were you.  No shame in aiding the brain!
