Octo's Poll of the Week #8

Frozen to death:  Placed in a huge pot of nearly frozen water.. then quickly frozen into an ice cube.
Boil to death:  Placed in a huge pot of boiling water.. well, that should do it.

I have a feeling this will be a pretty fast runaway poll, seeing as freezing numbs you and probably just puts you into shock/unconscious while boiling isn't going to be so "peaceful."

In general, which bugs you more, being too hot or too cold?

I just tried swimming in lake Michigan yesterday and it was only 45 degree water, absolutely miserable. I'd rather be boiled, seems like no matter which you take, you're fucked pretty quick! Also, being a Titanic buff, I know that 28 degree water (jesus!) takes about 10 minutes to kill you too, not quite "instantaneous" if you ask me!

^now that makes an interesting point because I'd always rather be too hot than too cold...maybe because I live in Michigan though.

Edit- That's interesting, Jimbo. I'd be curious to know how long it would take to die in boiling water.

I'm not voting on this poll as I'm superstitious around things involving myself and death.

Regardless, I've always found it strange how the human body is normally 37C/98F yet room temperature is a mere 21C/70C in which we are comfortable. It seems strange to me that people get uncomfortable in temperatures of 30C+ even though that is still cooler than our bodies. One would naturally assume that we should be comfortable in areas with our body temperature as a middle point.

Anyways, I'm comfortable nude in temperatures from 15C-35C. Clothed I can take anything from -40C-35C.

Well he said nearly frozen so I am assuming it would be colder than the people who died in the Titanic were in, but I live in Minnesota where it can be totally brutal in winter, and for me being hot is better than being cold, because the cold is actually dangerous and your skin starts to hurt if you are out in it. But I think being boiled would be overall more painful. Just read this article....thousands of knives? Fuck that. http://www.nowpublic.com/...oiling-water-father-dies

Also, I dont get where you get 28 degrees from Jim...scientifically the water would most likely have to be frozen if it was 32 degrees or lower. The actual water temperature seems to have been 35 degrees, per this article (though I admit I havent checked any other sources) http://www.disastercity.info/titanic/index.shtml

Salt water has a higher boiling temperature and lower freezing temperature, I believe. Something like that, at least. I know when you add salt to water before you boil it, it will take longer.. like when you cook pasta, should add the salt after it is boiling with the pasta.

Anyway I said nearly freezing because the idea was being literally FROZEN. Being inside of an ice cube. Not slowly going down in temperature as that is so much less extreme than boiling. It was supposed to be nearly freezing so when you are put in a freezer, the water turns to ice pretty fast.

No Clemens

The freezing point of water is 32F... but if the water keeps moving, it won't freeze. It needs to be stationary or close to it to freeze. Think about the water in the Arctic... 12 months/year the air temperature is well below zero, alas all of that water is well below 32F. It is such a large body of water and it is constantly moving, so it can't freeze.

That is true, however based on what I read the lowest temperature any sea or ocean water can reach is 28 degrees before it will freeze on the surface, and that is in arctic areas, so I imagine where the Titanic was it was closer to 35 degrees like the article says.

Well it did hit a freaking iceberg. I imagine the water was as cold as it possibly could be without fully freezing, as some of the water was frozen, into icebergs which the boat hit

Icebergs are pieces of glaciers that break off and float out in the ocean, so the one the Titanic hit may have been from a thousand miles away or something.

Maybe ask: Which is better? Going from hot to cold or cold to hot? (Could be to any degree: Tossed into boiling water and then flash frozen, or something along those lines).

I've lived in Florida all my life, and the summers here can get pretty brutal (the heat index has been 100-110F the past few days). That being said, I hate the heat and can tolerate the cold very well (Infil can vouch for me). I'm looking forward to moving to a place where it'll actually snow in the winter!

The cold doesn't bother me at all, but I really hate being too warm. I actually wear shorts in below freezing weather on quite a regular basis (Ask Infil, he can vouch for me too )

Infil can vouch that I.... DON'T! do well in the cold. However I do prefer being cold because you can make a fire, add more clothes, get under a blanket, etc., but when you're too hot it just blows. Especially without AC.... ugh

I did not pull 28 degrees out of my ass, Clemens, you clearly only checked one very unreliable source whereas I've spent years of my life studying this! Robert Ballard, a respected oceanographer and the same guy who discovered the Titanic wreck, helped conduct a study that concluded that the North Atlantic can reach temps as low as 26 degrees before actually being covered in a thin sheet of ice on the surface (in calm sees, of course). Remember, Titanic was steaming into a total icefield, similar to what you'd find in the northern regions of the US that the Coast Guard has to break apart; it wasn't just a lone iceberg out there, it was 70% ice when daylight came.

Still, some died instantly when hitting the water, and 5 lasted over 30 minutes, I'll take the boiling!

Edit: Here is my own source, http://www.titanic-titani...opic.php?f=27&t=3839

I'd rather have a bath than a cold shower.

I guess being boiled is kind of like having a bath and being frozen is kind of like having a cold shower.

Frozen to death. I can't really be outside if it's too hot in the air. My blood pressure must be insane or something because everytime I shake people hands I feel that I have the warmer hand and I get sweaty very easily. Another thing is that I sleep in a basement where it's only 13-18C so I'm pretty used to being in cold areas. And I never really freeze so simple choice for me: Frozen cause I can stand it longer than heat

the reason for the "slashed by a thousand knives" is cause theres a torture method that is called something, and that something means death by a thousand knives, though i forgot what its called.... actually its death by a thousand cuts, lingchi or Leng Tch'e thats it!, sorry i forgot i remember there was a death metal band named that. anyways thats why they said it, imperial china used it so since this was from korea or whatever about the baby being boiled that would be why.

if you look into it, nazi germany use to freeze people to see how cold the human body could with stand being frozen, these i think, are the only studies that are still looked at by people today for research. I remember reading about that a long time ago, somewhere.

anyways, id rather be frozen if it was going to freeze me quick, but if it was a slow freeze then idk, just cold water sound better than hot water, cause water can only get so cold, where as boiling just blows.

but someone tell me this, since idk how cold 28f water would be, but how could is lets say and ice chest full of ice then water added to it and left for 30 minutes. cause when i get a drink out of an ice chest im like hmmmm wonder how cold that is.... any guess from anyone

28F water is -2.2C; go to a Titanic exhibit someday, they usually have an iceberg on display that's sitting at exactly the same water temperature as was the night of Titanic's sinking, totally unreal.

Yeah thinking of it, just boiling water won't guarantee it's quicker.. but I was thinking something like lava or whatever. I prefer heat to cold anyway, I hate these... 2 months of winter in brazil :P Which are like 10-15ºC (in my city) but for me this is like super cold

Ok, would you rather die by being dipped into lava (in excess of 1200C) or being dipped into liquid nitrogen? (exists in liquid form between -210C and -196C.)

wouldn't seem to matter at those extremes. your brain would interpret them as the same, it seems. do you mean like a plummet into those elements or a slow lowering let's say? fast plummet OBV is preferable, but a slow dip is agonizing to imagine!

Jumping in lava or a swimming pool filled with ice cubes........ Id rather jump in lava. for sure
Standing in a huge oven on high heat. or standing in a freezer.......... I'd go with the freezer.

Both would well and truly suck though.

FYI, I voted "freezing to death"

And if I was going to die. I would rape absolutely everyone first then go out in style with a skateboard off a skyscraper or something, but would try to land down a pitched roof first and make it interested. and I'd do it naked.
Edit: Considering I'm already going to hell anyways
