The 2009 RMC [aka the "Virginia Olympics"!]
« on: July 29, 2009, 02:44:00 am »
First off, yes, I will be defending my GNC title again this season during our stay in Virginia.

But QB/Thingy/Swaff brought up how they wished there was a way for more people to get involved in the athletics/outdoors action, like a "GNC" but for all 10 (or however many) people who wanted to compete.  So, if there's enough interest, we'd like to run something called the 2009 RMC during one day of the meet.  That stands for "Real Man's Challenge", and it would be basically an Olympics for GNC-type events.  For instance, farthest football toss, fastest 40 yard dash, best result for soccer penalty kicks, etc.

For those who might be coming to Virginia:

1. would you be interested in competing in something like this?
2. what events would you like to see run?
* keeping in mind that we'd like to stay away from 1v1 stuff like sumo/arm wrestling in favor of events that 10+ people could do fairly quickly and that could easily be measured/judged

So sign up in the topic if interested, and post your ideas!

You're afraid of sumo/arm wrestling because those would be easy victories for me.

Anyway, I'm interested, I'll edit this post later with events i'd like to do.

Either Home Run Derby or Fastest Pitch needs to be included.

I nominate myself to participate!

lots of these events are pretty ugly with 10 people involved

HRD is pretty boring after like 3 people lol (not to mention we'll need multiple pitchers capable of throwing strikes or that will take a really long time to do)

40 yard dash is going to be a bit tough for an outsider to differentiate everybody but the winner. I don't want to have to figure out the order from 5th to 8th if 6 of you hit near the same time.

soccer penalty kicks--goalie is going to get tired with that many or we're just going to have some luck involved with different goalies for each guy... etc etc

easy to do is free throws, poker (we'd have to make the structure go faster), and football toss.

what you could just do instead is run all the events and then everybody comes to a consensus (or majority votes) on who won.

the 1 v 1 stuff you could set up a tournament and then have 1st 2nd tied 3rd etc etc --and sumo there'd even be some strategy like do I tank this match so my opponent is gassed for the next round so I can beat him better then?

40 yard dash wouldn't be hard because im sure it'll be taped and it'll be as easy as hitting the rewind button. Basketball we can do like 5 free throws or something around the hoop. maybe for soccer see how many times you can juggle the ball...? maybe like a 3v3 sumo match or 5v5 depending on how many. you can swap out people to face others.

We discussed in Chat how some of these events might go with 10 people. For example, in penalty kicks, each participant would take 9 shots; one shot against every other participant. It's the only way to ensure that everybody faces the same quality of goaltending. I'd definitely recommend having each person take all 9 kicks in a row though rather than having everybody take kick #1, then kick #2, etc. The speed of the game would be improved by the extra players able to stand behind the net, as the kicker wouldn't have to chase his own ball down and switch positions after each kick. Also, we could bring a 2nd ball to speed things up further.

For HRD, it probably doesn't matter as much who pitches, so as long as the batter is happy with his pitcher, it'll work fine. Everybody should be allowed to choose their own pitcher or switch pitchers if they don't like the pitches they're seeing.

40 Yard Dash, Free throws, and Football Toss are still easy, as are Vertical Leaps, Long Jumps, and Chin-Ups if people want to keep those.

Arm wrestling is obviously out of the question but Sumo could still possibly work as a 10-man game. We'd just need a bigger circle and each round would be a huge free-for-all. I'd actually be interested in seeing how that works out!

Edit - And another thing! The penalty kicks could potentially be 2 challenges in one. We could be ranked by goals scored and also by goals given up. Of course there's some correlation between the two events, as scoring goals also helps you in the goaltending competition and vice versa, but I think that's a minor consideration.

1. Well count me in! (and that even though the only real type of exercise I've practised recently is badminton...)

2.
Penalty kicks: yes!
40 yards dash: yes!
Home run thing: won't probably hit any ball, but whatever
free throws: same, I have (almost) never played basketball, so this should be interesting...
long jump: yes
Also, every challenge like this should contain a swimming event (~25m? can be done in the lake)

And Jon, let's do pull ups, not chin ups!

I was thinking this would make a good Saturday day event. We all pack up and head out to the place and get it done.

Hey Mark! Just in case you didn't see Jimbo's note on facebook or didn't understand it, you'll be taking on Jim in a Sumo match, best of 3. Why? Because foolish Jim thought he could beat you so we made a $75 bet to settle the matter. If you want, I'm willing to let you throw me around in as many practice matches as you need. Just don't let me down!

QB, will this sumo match be held in the sand by the lake?

Also, I vote for Home Run Derby as an event. I vote no for "chin ups" and I can bring something we can use for a "discus" type event if anyone is interested. I think it would be fun to do some sort of decathlon where total points over all the events determines the overall winner but perhaps that's what Jon already had in mind.

Edit:: I just read Scott's idea for a fastest pitch. I have a baseball that has an internal speed detector. All we would need is a glove and we could do a fastest pitch event.

Also, if we plan on doing penalty kicks (which I think would be fun) shouldn't we have a single goalie to try and make things equal?

If we're doing a home run derby, we'll need people bringing all the equipment they can. I was able to bring 3 bats, ~30 balls, and a bunch of gloves last year, but I just checked my trunk and realized I don't have any of it with me this year. I've got 1 left-handed glove, 1 baseball...and that's it. That is, unless I want to bring a few autographed balls, most of which are worthless enough to actually play with (sorry Cecil Fielder!).

You got this covered, Brick?

I'm fine participating, though I'm horribly out of shape from sitting on my butt for 6 months writing my thesis. I vote no for chinups and no for swimming events (because I won't be doing water sports). If you do decide to do a water event, I'll just take a 0 on it or whatever. There seem to be lots of other good ideas, though. I'm almost embarrassingly out of shape, really, so I hope I can run 40 yards without having a heart attack.

QB, I still have my whole baseball bag in my trunk. I've got about a dozen baseballs I've filtered out from the team over time, and my two lefty gloves. I could probably bring a couple more right handed gloves for people...as far as bats go, I don't have any highschool size -3 bats, but I have a pretty good -5 bat. I can also bring this hilarious wooden bat called a Spalding Mushroom (oh i left that in the shed at the baseball field ).

@Infil: I agree, anyone who completed a thesis within the last 6 months should be awarded some automatic bonus points. ;-)
