PAL loses maybe 0.3 or something minor so it's not a big deal especially when going for 55/54. experienced players can get 54/55 with a straight-on lockshot just with good strafing.

run analysis: even before the tunnel you lose about a second due to sloppy lines - watch Marc or ace to see where to look to take the sharpest path into the tunnel (you used too much lookdown and went quite far left)

after the tunnel make sure to turn sharp and stay closer to the right - again watch how Marc does this part

your gate was one of the worst I have ever seen so I am not surprised if you lost 3 seconds here alone, at least 2 anyway.

this next stretch is the most important and hardest to get right for new players, you have to change strafe after hitting the gate button and not get stuck on the gate, make it through nice and clean and hug the left wall, turn close the the wall and strafe towards the next 2 gates. your angles looked like you lost a fair bit of time so try to tidy this part up. obviously you want a boost here for 53.

opening the small gate before the lockhot is tricky and should get faster with practice.

everything up till now is just learning to strafe well and can get 100% consistent, but the lockshot is never going to be 100%. you want to get a feel for the line you want to take to the lock and the angle you need to aim so you can anticipate shooting it a bit. get a dot If you don't already have one. if you miss the shot just pause out, no point getting a bad time if you can retry for a nice time.

your strafing after the lockshot looked okay, could be tighter though and this part is essential for 53 - at least I found that it was on pal. look up is a good option though so keep doing that. and your exit looked nice, just don't choke it on a great run! If you do happen to mess up the exit just pause out and subtract 2 seconds from your time - that's what you could have had.

hope this helps a bit

hardest part for me has always been opening the gate after hitting the lockshot, I still sometimes hit b a fraction too early and lose a good run in a stupid way. good luck

I managed to weasel it down to 56, and that was with a tight lockshot.

PAL doesn't matter until you want to turn like 54.2 or lower into 53.9. People say that's because 53 style double gates are very rare on PAL and boosts are a bit more unlikely.

I see the reason for your very bad gates in your looking angle when you leave the tunnel. You want to take a short far look towards the gate when you do that right turns after the tunnel and then strafe to the switch without lookdown, this will yield an ok gate every run.

Alright, I think I've got it cracked, but I do have a couple more questions. (Just to be an annoying little pissant  :kappa: )

1. I get 39 quitouts if I fail lockshot, and I got 38 once. Is 39 a quitout for 55, and 38 for 54?
2. Those double gates...besides looking at it quickly, are there any more tricks to making them open faster?
3. For lockshot, should I pretty much be in the center of the gates so I go straight through. (I assume the answer is yes here, just wanted to make sure)

Also, I got 55, using the "good" strafe lines. It was OK, a couple of minor stucks and a pretty good, but not great, double gates.

1) 38 can give high 54/low 55, 39 can give high 55/low 56
2) I dunno what people are telling you "look at it quickly" just keep a fucking normal plane lookup angle through the tunnel until you hit the button.  There are no other tricks.  It's one of the mysteries we're yet to break.
3) Yeah I guess; if you're running straight at it.  If you're strafing it like the WR videos then you want to be off to the right; like in the WR videos.


Playing Dam Agent as the first level of GE speedrunning is the most common mistake made among GE speedrunners.  Play Facility A, Silo A, Surface 1 SA, Archives SA/00A and levels that like where you won't die and have medium complexity, to best learn your all round basic style of speedrunning play.

Dam Agent is a level unlike any other.  It's not even Goldeneye anymore.  It's just all knowledge in lag reduction and looking the right direction and other bullshit used to trim frames.  Completely the wrong level to play for anyone new, yet everyone new does it.

Surface 1 SA is definitely a very fun level to play. It covers boosts, lookdown, opening doors, picking up shit, killing a guard quickly, strafelines and aim (sort of).

What I meant is basically also just looking at the normal plane when doing the right turns in the tunnel. When you reach the gate line-of-sight that way, you can feel a distinct lag and IIRC you hear some silent gate shit with music off that you wouldn't hear in lookdown which I thought of as "gate activation". But that's just a memory hook from 2 years ago, so it could very well be charlatanry that just helped looking the right way.

I think it's getting sub 1 on the prestigous 1st level what gets most people started and then it's the first level where they want to push the time lower and lower because it seems so simple. Getting Facility 1:05 and Silo 1:35 is not so appealing looking at the WRs :kappa:

My first 8 or so PR's were the 'cake' WRs or something back in 05/06. I would highly recommend NOT doing what I did and try many different levels - you will get much better at the game that way and maybe find some levels you are naturally good at.

Yeah Dam A is a horrible level to start speedrunning with. Not to discourage you or anything but 53 and 55 are several miles apart so even if you are only 2s from the WR its still a big step. I got 53 when I was ranked 3rd or something.

Like Goose and others said you start off with levels like S1 SA, Fac A, Archs, etc.

None the less, I'm still going to get 54 and then call it quits. I know I'm getting 54 runs which fail at lockshot, it just feels faster than the 55s where I hit the lockshot perfectly...of course.  :kappa:

(And yeah, I was never expecting to get 53 off the bat. It's insane!)

When I started to speedrun Goldeneye 007, I also did Dam Agent lol.
But also a lot of Streets and Runway. I'm very glad 0:54 came fast, but I took longer with Runway Agent 0:23.
Archives Agent 0:17 came fast aswell.

I had a lot of problems with Streets. I remember that I was stuck on 1:17 a lot. 1:14 came like a year later lol, on PAL, so yeah, I was very happy with that and I'm still am, the odds are like 0.1% for the GL guard...

I don't remember what came next.

Ace, I think you got NTSC when you were in top 5 :P

0.1% would be around 1 in 20 hours which is plain bullcrap. Throwing around fancy numbers with zero thought is clumsy.

And do you mean the GL is less likely on PAL? Is this yet another fairy-tale? Why would Rare change a single irrel guard spawn during a version port in the first place? I read that no GL for 4 hours is also  quite common on NTSC.

And yeah, streets 114 with 1.2 no GL is totally not cake, failed to get that last weekend. Had 2 GL spawns in the good spots but he rolled or blew me up like a pro ^^

Probably is but I don't think any player has seriously played for 1:13 on PAL. Streets is sort of like Dam on PAL. With 2.x and a standard 7 or 8 boost run you should be able to get 1:13 with decent strafing though. A little harder yes, but it can't be too bad.

While we're at it:
On Silo Agent PAL, what is the secret behind getting open doors on the bridge after the 2nd fueling rooms? Where and how many bullets should I shoot around there? I saw the door leaving the bridge has a patroling guard involved, so it's pace depended, right? Is it also cinema dependend? Having both doors open helps a lot but I couldn't figure it out from the few videos available.
What is the overall influence of the cinemas? Are there bad and good ones?

Can someone please be kind and tell me where I lose time on my S1 SA 1:51? I want to go after 1:50x2 to get back my top 15 place but I see a smooth run in this video. I did not do the 2 easy GL boosts, however.

Since I've had legit 1:49 paces at Marc's place, I'm going to reply with what I know.

- Your strafe line to the first hut. Head more to the right.
- More look-down, especially when entering the hut to avoid lag.
- Look for different ways to do the safe key hut. I find doing Marc's pirouette consistent and fast.
- Going to the right side of the safe is faster, but slightly less consistent.
- GL boosts like Clemens and Marc.

- Cut 1st cinema, watch 2nd.  Helps with timing some walking guards near the comms tower and sets a good pace for your session.  The 2nd cinema is like 3 seconds.  Just do it, the pacing for it will make you play better.

- don't shoot bullets stupidly.  This only causes lag and does nothing worthwhile.

- line past the first hut is bad.  You want to pass directly by it.  Watch some of my recent 1:49s on my Youtube channel.  You want to see the hut in your screen and just almost nick the corner of it.

- GL hut was fine.  You'll find with a better strafe line, the setup for that hut is even easier.  When you're strafing along side the hut, it's hard to get a good entry and actually makes the GL pickup harder.  The further from that angle you are, the easier the GL pickup is.

- safe key hut made me throw up.  You probably lost a full second there.  Do it like Marc or I do.  I do all left strafe to the key, then switch to right for exit and next strafe.  I think Marc does it differently, maybe even like you did it.  You were just SO slow there.  The fewer strafe changes the better.

- obviously do the easy GL downward boost en route to the safe hut

- safe was somewhat slow.  You can get the documents by just barely touching the safe.  You basically fucked the whole side of it.  Not necessary.  Also, the right strafe there maybe saves .15ish so if you can learn that (it's really not that hard) it will help.

- do the easy 0 health damaging GL boost to the hut.  There is no excuse for not doing it (unless you are ghosting)  Half a bar on SA is more than enough for it if done properly.

- comms hut was surprisingly OK.  Stay all right strafe after the console though IMO.  Clemens or someone might disagree.  Turns could be slightly tighter and door open could have been 10ish frames quicker but it was OK.

- the GL boost after the comms hut isn't that hard.

- hole entry/warp/GL shot were all DEFINITELY clean enough for 1:49, but this is a big part of where I lose 1:48 so maybe Marc or Clem would see something I don't (but again it's more than good enough for 1:49)


In summary, 1:50 is an insanely cake time.  Pretty much any clean run with 4:0 or better should be 1:50.  It truly shocks me how 1:49 or less is only 6 of the top 8 players.  1:49 is very similar to Streets 1:13.  Compare getting enough boosts on S1 (which isn't even necessary for Clem/Marc) to getting the GL on Streets.  Except you get enough boosts very frequently compared to a pretty rare GL.

Surface 1 SA 1:49 is like a Streets A 1:13 where the GL is there 10% of the time I'd say.

1:50 is just... yeah.  I'm really shocked to hear that Jimbo, Axel Z, Afan, all struggled to get 1:51.  We are just speaking different languages on this level.

Start shooting after warping, BE FAST (if you're too slow he warps out) and pause facing down the hallway, about halfway down that hall.

I used to have this problem. Basicly it happens because Bond hasn't seen the safe key guy. With all guards that can clone themselves, if Bond hasn't yet seen the original guard, then he'll just send out clones when he hears gunfire without moving himself. But as soon as Bond has seen him, he won't be able to clone and will instead be lured by the gunfire.

So when running past the safe room in the very beginning, try turning a bit toward the left.

If you haven't already, watch videos, watch them again, and then re-watch what you already watched.

I don't let go of either of the c-buttons. Just whip over and whip back. Test location of the shot a couple of times (turn on invisibility or something). I kind of aim through the side/rear of the train.

If you haven't already, watch videos, watch them again, and then re-watch what you already watched.

I don't let go of either of the c-buttons. Just whip over and whip back. Test location of the shot a couple of times (turn on invisibility or something). I kind of aim through the side/rear of the train.
Ye i've watched some videos, just wondering if people got something to aim on, since i can't see their dot.

You don't see a dot if the videos are recorded with a capture card.
What I did is cutting off some piece of paper and stick that on the TV while holding R and shooting to position it.

I was thinking that some maybe aim at the wall before turning to do the shot to get the right height.

Hold the 2nd controller (shooter) in your right hand.

Hold the 1st controller (pretty normal aside from shooting) in the left hand.

Do it in all left strafe to start learning.  So on the SECOND controller, set it to cruise control holding DOWN RIGHT.  Now you will just strafe around left and use the other controller to direct you, open doors and switch weapons.

Try it for a bit, shoot with the other controller.  See how it FEELS.

Then go to Depot.  When you see the right cinema, press A on the 2nd controller TWICE (needed to shoot for some reason; you're switching from pp7 to unarmed to pp7) and then shoot the screen 5 times.  Time it so the last shot hits as the cinema fades out.  You can cut the next cinema immediately or watch it depending on how your game reacts I guess.  But the 1st cinema is enough time to build the 0.3 second saving speed.

If that one guard down the stairs instantly pulls a grenade, that is what people call "a good nade" which often kills all the guards in that area. From watching streams, I think it happens like every 30 minutes. Ofc you can get unlucky and not see a single one for 2 hours. In between, you can get a grenade pull as the second animation from that guy or a pull from the black hat guy up the stairs, which also can turn out quite well.

That is not true, Ace and I think Goose have duped 102 and 103 respectively without any grenade pull (which is insane).
