NTSC

and a huge key to Boris running strat is to not get in his way whatsoever when you first meet him 7 seconds into the level.  Once he starts walking, if you get in his way at all, he won't run the right direction.

For the most part the level is the same but the warp is a lot harder on PAL.

thanks ryan very helpful advice.

I am only going for 1:07 or less, so I pretty much just need a nade and decent boris and I have success.

Tried 2.2 last night on Runway Agent but something was going wrong. I was getting decent runs but they'd be 25/26 for some reason. Help please?

How I setup
- CC all the way down on right hand controller
- Rubberband CC'd controller to the right
- I watch first cinema and skip second
- Put stick to the left when strafing left and flick back to right when going right.

Where did I say that I CC'd right? My CC is set all the way down but the rubberband is pulling it to the right.

Unless you mean rubber band should pull stick down lol?

hmm yeah, I misread, weird

make sure the rubber band pulls the stick directly into the "right" angle.

dunno what else to say

I had a lot of weird problems with the rubber band strat as well, Philip, don't feel bad; I never really figured out why. I just put on a biker glove and had super grip for the 2nd controller :kappa:

Biker glove lol. I'm just worried that if I don't use the rubberband, I might put the analog in the wrong position with my hand when I'm not paying attention.

Legit question. Does the game not save your best time if it's a first completion over 15 minutes or something? Our admin Scott "isthatagoodt" posted this picture,  (http://www.upload.speedrunwiki.com/images/misc/20130905000959.jpg), and didn't get a best time for a completion? Weird.

I thought 20:00 was the cutoff time for the game not saving it, but I guess 19:43 is good enough.

Hm maybe. I remember back in the day my buddy (or: the guy where i played GE b/c I was not allowed to buy it) played Aztec 00 for a month because it was the last level we had left. When he finally claimed that he beat it, he had no best time saved aswell but Egypt was unlocked. I gave him shit that he used button codes or whatever but he swore to god that it was legit, haha. Probably the same thing (we used 30 Minute strats for the 'hard' levels back then), because I really think that the guy was too stupid to enter a button code or use some other kind of cheating device.

There are no button codes for Egypt ^^ Codes only allow you to unlock Facility-Cradle A + Aztec SA, IIRC.

BloodE ran some experiments on his emu after we were theorizing about the TNS cutoff in chat.

Turns out the game makers devoted 10 bits to store the time for each stage/difficulty combo.  This is 1024 seconds or from 00:00 to 17:03.  However you have to figure they devoted a value to TNS, hence 17:02.

But you can put in codes during levels to keep you alive, get guns, ammo, etc.

Youse: That theory is not compatible with higher best times like Jimbo's 123:19 and probably most 00A first completions. Maybe they devoted 16 bits (seems reasonable to just use a standard sized integer for just 60 entities) and 0x03FF was just their badly chosen magic word for no best time?

bcks: That's what I thought aswell.

Jimbo is lying about 123:19, that's for sure.  (Note: he's technically misremembering and admitted as such).  But your thought about 16 bits being used and 17:03 being the magic TNS encoding is wrong, since we have a few other times slightly above 17:03 that also weren't saved.  It is definitely the cut-off for Dam Agent.

But it wasn't a bad thought (especially given Jimbo's false claim)-- my original theory also revolved around word-aligned bit encodings for the saved times (I had imagined 8 bits for each of the minutes and seconds) but that's also been clearly disproven by our finding.  My updated theory is based on how scarce memory might have been inside of these cartridges, especially in the early days of the N64.  The saved times could each occupy 10 bits and all be packed together in 75 bytes (60*10=600=8*75). But I suppose we can run the experiments on some of the harder 00A levels to check those out, because 17:02 does seem low for a casual player.  Perhaps different levels DO have different ceilings.

Save states are trolling me so I can't 100% confirm it but it'd appear the threshold remains the same for later levels. On Caverns 00 16:38 saved while 17:17 did not.

Yeah the things about save files is that they pack all the necessary variables/information into a single small(?) block of memory. Including variables of many different types/sizes. So unless you really need 16 bits, it might be more advantageous to use a different number if it's fits better with the rest of the data you want saved, since you want as tightly packed information as possible. It's very different in regular RAM memory where the variables are actually used by the processor directly, as processors are usually optimized for standard-sized integers.

Jimbo: Damn you :D

Youse: Ok, your theory seems to be the ultimate truth. Did a 26m on Dam 00A and 19m on Aztec SA and both didn't save (still unlocks the single laser btw). Good to know, because the "What, you cannot beat 17 minutes? Well fuck you, no best time for you!" paradigm is something that we as speedrunners should support.

"Perhaps different levels DO have different ceilings."
Nah, the handling of variable sizes would increase the binary code size by much more than the tiny bits saved by cutting the best time of shorter levels ;)

Did you know that the high Aztec exhaust bay console is invulnerable?

Boole: Congrats on having a 2^8 post count on a binary topic :kappa:

Actual S1 SA/00A Question
I take it that this is yet another level where PAL loses time for no fucking reason. How much tenths is it approximately? 150s being Ace untieds is kinda demoralizing (b/c two seconds behind NTSC) but I guess it's not that bad and just noone bothers to play the disadvantaged version?

You lose some time, but it's really not much. Worry more about the amount of lookdown and strafelines you use. 149s are doable on PAL for sure, maybe even 148s.

Yes

I think my 1:09 might have it

I've gotten it a few times.  That's why I knew 1:06 was possible back in like 2006.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with Aztec glass. I almost always get 1 or 2 guards to glass, but they almost never open it. I've been playing for 90 minutes and I got glass once. I took a quick video on my phone just to show what I'm doing and to find out if there's something I'm doing wrong.

- Kill the guard behind the mainframe door with exactly 6 shots, this will lure the two exhaust bay guards as early as possible. More than 6 bullets will probably end up with a laser guard blocking you in the vents.
- While shooting those 6 bullets, rather stick to the right wall and don't run into his little booth. Otherwise you might be too far away from the bay guards to lure both (your position while shooting is important).
- Don't shoot any further bullets and lure the next guard just by watching him (this is what you did). Don't go too far or the approaching bay guards will fire at you, which will delay them.
- When you did everything like explained above, the three guards should more or less arrive in one collective cluster. In your video, one of the bay guards (most likely the more farther one) was late because you shot the mainframe guard with insufficient three bullets.
- For your target times you definitely want all three guards to be in position when you leave for the glass. Use R-lean like you did to further cluster them while waiting, the resulting consistency boost is easily worth the 1-3 second investment, especially on SA/00A.
- Watch videos on how long to stay at the glass. That part seemed ok in your run, maybe stay a little longer. On A and even SA, make sure to pull out the floppy at the glass. Killing the guards is not worth it.
- There is speculation about quickpauses (good idea anyway) and holding speed while waiting behind the wall increasing glass odds, but I don't think anyone can give tangible reasoning for that.
- Even when you did everything perfectly, success is never granted, but with a three guard cluster in position your odds should be really good. A good fail is when at least two guards stand next to each other right in front of the glass.

Have fun :)

Yeah you have to look right (in left strafe) at the door, wait until it starts opening, THEN go to right strafe and go through the open crack of the door.  Make sure to wait a little bit.  Watch Clemens' videos and do EXACTLY that.

Yeah, thanks. Tested that same thing and got 2 GTs in a row :D.
Let A be a pizza of radius z and height a. Its volume is V_A = pi·(z^2)·a = pizza.

On Statue, does Trev die with a head shot? I can't check it easily because my screen is small and I barely see him...

You need a limb hit on A and a body hit on SA/00A for him to survive.
