Road to the Series - 2009 Playoff Baseball Preds & Bets
« on: October 07, 2009, 02:56:00 am »
The Twins outlasted the Tigers in a 12 inning thriller tonight to win the AL Central title!  With that game out of the way, our postseason roster is set.  Let's hear everyone's preds for the 2009 MLB playoffs!

Reminder 1: for baseball we always predict the entire playoffs straight off, so say your picks for R1, R2, and the Series (along with how many games each series will take)
Reminder 2: R1 is Best of Five while the next two are Best of Seven

Scoring: 1 pt for R1, 2 pts for R2, 4 pts for WS.  but, you get double pts for any round you predict exactly (ie Rockies win in exactly 5 games)

American League
Boston Red Sox (95-67) @
LA Angels (97-65)

Minnesota Twins (86-76) @
New York Yankees (103-59)

National League
St. Louis Cardinals (91-71) @
LA Dodgers (95-67)

Colorado Rockies (92-70) @
Philadelphia Phillies (93-69)
---

Example pred post (not my actual!):
Angels in 3
Twins in 5
Cardinals in 3
Rockies in 5

Angels in 6
Rockies in 4

Rockies in 7

Preds from Alec:

Rockies over Phillies in 4 games- Philadelphia doesn't have going for them what they did last year. Hamels hasn't been as good, and Lidge lost the closer's role. Colorado surprised us all by winning the Wild Card like they did two years ago, and I feel like we're in a repeat with this one. Only this time the Phils put up a win.

Cardinals over Dodgers- LA hasn't looked as strong as they looked earlier in the season. The Cardinals have not one, but two potential Cy Young winners in Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter. Having Pujols, Ludwick, Holliday, and Derosa- these four can do damage, and I think they will be a nightmare for LA. St. Louis sweeps.

Yankees over Twins/Tigers- I believe no matter who they play they will advance. However, who they play I think will decide how long the series goes. If they play the Tigers, it is over in three. If they play the Twins, they are pushed to the maximum, but still get by. Joe Mauer is sooooooo good. If he doesn't get the MVP, then it is one of, if not the biggest MVP injustice of all time. Nonetheless, inking Mark Texeira and CC Sabathia have paid dividens, and A-Rod still had a solid season.

Angels over Red Sox in 4- Just a feeling. I think the Angels finally get over the hump and advance.

Yankees NOT to win AL Pennant risking $315 to win $300

... not sure if I should've waited to fire on this or not though.  Oh well.

And I have all 4 correct teams advancing with 2 perfect series as well

If I win this, I could very well be en route to pulling off the first GRAND SLAM of event predicting seeing as I currently hold the '09 NHL Playoff Preds title and am looking sharp to win the MLB '09 Preds title!

(the elite Grand Slam consists of NHL, MLB, and Academy Awards predictions. Because I say so.)

That's a heck of an interesting concept Goose. Let's try to name all the things that the Elite predicts on a yearly basis.

* Who Will Die in the coming year (Death Pool)
* Goldeneye WRs and Rankings (Silvester Tip or something... has this been done recently?)
* GNC
* Oscars
* NCAA Men's Basketball bracket (March Madness/Final Four)
* Summer Blockbuster rankings
* Virginia Stuff (Goldeneye Multi World Championship, RMC)
* NBA Playoffs (sometimes)
* NHL Playoffs
* MLB Playoffs
* NFL regular season (Pigskin Pick'Em, Spread Picks, Survival)
* College Football Bowl Season
* NFL Playoffs
* GameFAQs Contest(s)

Looking that over, I think it would be most fitting to call it the "pro sports Grand Slam", which would mean sending in the top "bracket" for the NHL, NFL, MLB, and NBA playoffs.

Both and NLCS and ALCS are now underway. Which means it's time to take a look at those things went down in Round One!

2009 MLB Playoffs - Round One Results

* Phillies > Rockies in 4 games (5-1, 4-5, 6-5, 5-4)
Perfect Pred: Goose, Ngamer, octo

* Dodgers > Cardinals in 3 games (5-3, 3-2, 5-1)
Perfect Pred: NO ONE

* Yankees > Twins in 3 games (7-2, 4-3, 4-1)
Perfect Pred: Goose, Come, wiff, Durk, Cara, Third, octo, Youse

* Angels > Red Sox in 3 games (5-0, 4-1, 7-6)
Perfect Pred: NO ONE
---

With that being said, your standings after one round are...

1. Goose - 6
2. Youse - 4
3. octo - 4 (runner up Cardinals dead)
4. Ngamer - 3 (runner up Sox dead)
4. Durk - 3 (runner up Sox dead)
4. Cara - 3 (runner up Sox dead)
4. Third - 3 (runner up Cardinals dead)
8. Infil - 3 (winning Cardinals dead)
9. wiff - 3 (winning Rockies and runner up Sox dead)
10. Thingy - 2 (runner up Cardinals dead)
10. wheat - 2 (runner up Cardinals dead)
12. Shep - 2 (winning Sox dead)
13. Come - 2 (winning Rockies and runner up Sox dead)
14. Alec - 2 (both WS teams eliminated, since he didn't pick any)
15. Cyber - 1 (winning Cardinals dead)

Goose and Youse are the only ones with their World Series pick still intact. Special congrats to Goose for being the only Eliter to correctly predict all 4 R1 winners!

Here is a completely pointless post, because I'm procrastinating on something:

Is anyone else really annoyed that this topic starts with "Road to the Series". Typically to easily find sports-related topics, I scan for the year as the first word in the title-- I have a hard time tracking this one down almost every time. On top of that, "Road to the Series" is not a very good title in the first place. I assume you mean, "World Series". Well then, why not say so? And if not, why not capitalize it to be "The Series". No team in the playoffs requires a road to "the Series"... they're already in one!

Bah, humbug!

The table is set; the 2009 series is Phils vs Yanks, and it all gets underway in just... 20 hours or so!

Things I love about this series:

* between A-Rod and Howard and New Yankee Stadium and Citizens Bank, is there any way this series doesn't smash the all-time record for HRs in a WS? seems like a sure thing!
* my two favorite (non-Milwaukee) pitchers (one because he singlehandedly saved my Fantasy team and the other because he singlehandedly saved by Reality team) going head to head... 3 times, possibly? unless they're afraid to start Lee on such short rest. anyways we're sure to see alot of them!
* between the huge slugging numbers on both sides and the shaky bullpens on both sides, I get the feeling that no lead will ever be safe for long! unlike that last round, where as soon as one of these East Coast teams had a 3-4 run lead on the LAers, you were 90% sure it was lights out

Standings updated tomorrow!

Cliff Lee's secret last name is Steinbrenner, because he literally owns the Yankees.

Cliff Lee's nickname should be Joe Girardi because he can manipulate the Yankees lineup at will.

Cliff Lee's other nickname should be Steve Nash because he effortlessly goes no-look and behind-the-back.

Cliff Lee's job before baseball must have been face painting, because he made Jeter, A-Rod, and Teixeira look like clows.

Cliff Lee's job before than must have been decorating China, because he paints around the plate so well.

Cliff Lee reminds me of Jon's mom because he has great ball movement and really pleased me last night.

CLIFF LEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE.

It took a heroic effort from Cliff Lee, but in the end the Phillies were able to band together and get the job done. They... forced a Game Six! Which doesn't seem like that big of a deal, but it's the first time since 2003 that the Series has gone longer than 5 games (how sad is that?), so at least it was something.

So the Yankees are your 2009 Champions! And thanks to Cliff Lee getting us past Game 5, this also means that Goose is your 2009 Champion (there were 4 other Yankee pickers but oddly, all of them expected the Series to be over in only 5 games). Goose also gets the added bonus of having a Perfect Pred for the WS, which turns these rankings into a heck of a blowout!

Thanks bro.

Cliff Lee is Pedro Martinez's grandfather because HE IS the Yankees' daddy.

Thought of that one while trying to fall asleep last night, had to bump.
