Assessment Help
« on: October 14, 2009, 08:04:00 am »
Hey guys, i'm currently putting together my Electronic Portfolio ready for interviews and stuff.

Currently i'm  putting together my philosophy of what i think is needed in literacy education

One of my arguments is based around shorthand writing (such as on internet and sms messaging etc). What i need help with is this: i need to turn the following statement into the craziest/ most overdone use of shorthand possible (something i'm crap at):

'Texting has changed the face of literacy forever. No longer are formal words and sentence structures used to convey written messages between two parties. This prevalence of shorthand writing ultimately influences the way children learn to read and write the English language, and is a major consideration for educators today'

any help would be greatly appreciated

You want someone to write out that italic sentence in text speak? As in two = 2 etc.

I can't really help here but im sure the elite has several serial texters like jimbo and goose who are fluent in shorthand

The whole concept lies beneath human mentality. If you ever talk to an old person, they laugh all the time for seemingly no reason. What is actually happening is that they have so many memories attached to one small thought they can't help but feel overcome with emotion.

In fact, if I say a sentence like "the big black cat crosses the dark city road" you have an exact idea of what's going on. If I say the word "black cat" the ideas are more and more vague. If I say a word like "innocence" then the ideas which can come to your mind are infinite.

Basically, the more compressed we make words, the grander scale they can transcend.

It is a big regression for literacy, but a huge advancement for communication in general.

As you can see with my "big black cat" sentence, it is more something from a novel or other descriptive work but will eventually be replaced with a single emoticon.

A cool example pf this is the emoticon: 69|O_o

Which means "I heard you having sex in your room last night" which itself can mean so many different things to anyone.

Goose your argument about shorthand being a progression for communication is absolutely fantastic! I'm definitely including this somewhere in my philosophy because i couldn't agree more, in many way this was what i was arguing for, you just managed to say it so succinctly though. cheers!

and that edited paragraph of your = epic. I'd never have thought of 75% of what you did. Thanks.

Some domain-specific knowledge or shorthand can also be used to shorten words or sentences... for instances on the some discussion forums (youtube comments?) (and in online games), L2R = Learn to Read.

Some more:
CHG = Changed
4fr = forever
The English Language = ENG

and you could think more abstract
formal words and sentence structures = ABC
ultimately = Ω
