The 2010 Elite Puzzle Hunt! (Hunt is now finished!)

THE HUNT IS NOW LIVE! Register if you haven't, then begin solving puzzles! http://elitepuzzlehunt.patrickjohannessen.com/

UPDATE - The hunt date has been set! Let me know your team of 2 as soon as you can. See the second post for the current list.

If you've been in chat at all this year, you may have seen firsthand team The Elite compete in various web-based puzzle hunts. We placed well in the 2009 MUMS, CISRA, and SUMS puzzle hunts, and had a blast doing it. Many different eliters gave their contributions throughout each of these three hunts, and it was enough fun that we've been toying with the idea of running our own miniature version of a puzzle hunt. We finally got off our duffs and did something about it!

The 2010 Elite Puzzle Hunt will be a small competition run over the course of several days, starting on January 3, 2010. Several eliters who have helped solve in past hunts have flexed their creative talents and written a variety of puzzles for YOU to solve. For those of you who aren't familiar with what a puzzle hunt is, you can Google various FAQs online (one such page is here). Essentially, you will be given a collection of information and expected to come up with a final word (or small phrase) which is the solution to the puzzle. You typically aren't given much help... it is your objective to draw conclusions on how to decipher the information based on the way it is arranged, the title of the puzzle, any patterns you see emerging, and so forth. Each puzzle typically requires some "leap of logic" where you connect the information to the puzzle's central theme somehow. For an example puzzle (and solution), go here. You can also look through the puzzle archives for the MUMS, CISRA, and SUMS hunts (Google searches can find them), but I'd wager the average difficulty of the puzzles in our hunt will be easier.

This hunt will take place involving teams of TWO Eliters. If you are interested in participating, you might want to figure out who you're partnering with soon.

The current plan for the hunt is to release all the puzzles at once on a website (which Neo is designing, thanks to him!). Once a member of your team clicks on a puzzle for the first time, a timer will start for your team and that puzzle. Once you solve the puzzle, that puzzle-specific timer will stop. At the end of the hunt, we will award points to the fastest 3 teams to solve each puzzle (maybe more depending on how many teams we have enter). This way, you don't feel obligated to stay awake for a puzzle's release, and it's fairly timezone indifferent. Plus, if you're on a roll, you could solve all the puzzles in one go if you feel up for it. But don't start your timer if you're planning on sleeping right away...

Not everyone has a keen mind for this type of thing, and that's fine. This is meant to be a fun hunt, and we want to make sure everyone is having fun. We would still like you to participate. Each puzzle will also have a series of hints which will be unveiled as your specific timer passes certain marked times (for example, 6 hours after you first open it, you might get your first hint). This should help keep people interested in the puzzle, and not just staring blankly at the page without any clue of what to do.

I am currently hoping to have 10 puzzles in our modest little hunt. I am going to be the puzzle master (that is, not competing), as I am compiling all the puzzles from the different sources, helping them test-solve it and providing my feedback. These 10 puzzles will range in difficulty from fairly easy to pretty difficult, and there should be a good variety of types of puzzles. Granted, since this is our first hunt, there are bound to be some hiccups and our puzzles may not be of the best quality, but we're going to try our best and see how it goes! Since the current plan is to release all the puzzles up front, there is no "scheduled time" for this hunt, though I suspect no team will solve all puzzles until a few days in. You can work on the puzzles mostly at your leisure, and just start the timer for your next puzzle when you're ready. I may put a hard cap on the hunt at around 8 days or so.

I know there is a fair amount of interest from (obviously) the Team Elite members about this, but I hope some of you who haven't gotten on board before will try your hand at it. It can be very rewarding to break through on a puzzle that has kept you stuck, and the hint system will ensure that you will often have new ideas to try out. Working in teams of two will always give you someone to bounce ideas between, since it is pretty hard to solve a puzzle all by yourself. Unfortunately, I suspect we won't have enough interest in the hunt to make the teams larger than two, but I think we're designing our puzzles to match that number. These puzzles won't need a crack team of 10 people to solve them, like some of the other hunts the Elite has participated in.

This topic will be used for general discussion about the hunt, and any announcements I have to make. If I must say, we have some neat puzzles planned, so I hope everything goes well!

Current Hunt Teams
-----
Team Pineapple Apple - Come and Thingy
Nude Chainsaw Flock - Jack and Wouter
Team England XIV ft. Team Rest of the World XIV (Rudeboxer All-Stars 69) - Goose and Durk
1 - Mgay and Third
(team name TBD) - Cyber and Disco

Your team must consist of two people, and at least one must be an Eliter or a Karter (preferably both people are such). Our hunt is modest and meant to be for fun, so don't go and recruit some expert non-Elite solver just to run through the puzzles immediately.

To be pedantic, I'll be developing it. It will look rather shitty and/or plain unless someone wants to pitch in a bit of design help in about two weeks time, but it's not a priority. This is also subject to me finding some hosting (a LAMP setup is useless to me, Ng), but I don't foresee that being a problem. I'm giving Infil regular status updates, so he's going to make sure I actually follow through with this unlikely all my other failed projects.

I would strongly recommend that anyone even the least bit interested give this puzzle hunt a try. Previous hunts have been an absolute blast, with everybody testifying just how much fun they are. I can only imagine how much better this will be, competing against fellow Eliters! Don't worry if you think you won't do any good - experience have shown those types of people are even more likely to get some puzzles because they often think about a particular problem in a completely different way.

This isn't something that requires me to be in chat at a time where I am 80% working / 15% feeding my daughter?

Incredible.

Sign me the fuck up!! First person to claim me as their partner in this thread gets my genius to work alongside them.

Anyone interested in helping me design a logo for the hunt? More generally, a "top of the page" banner that has some logo and the puzzle's title for each page? I'm terrible with graphic design.

What dates would people prefer to run the hunt so that it doesn't interfere with final exams or other Christmas-related things? Would people prefer we start this on a Monday or some day like a Friday/Saturday? Let's say the earliest we could start is some time in late November (the 23rd or so) and the latest I'd want to start it is sometime like December 7th. Anyone have a preference? Since we can be a little flexible with the date I don't want to pick a time when no one is free.

By the way, if you could post if you are interested in participating in the hunt, it would give me a good idea of the number of people I should expect. I don't know if only 6 or 7 people will do it, or if we'll get higher numbers than that. It affects things like the team setup and the number of points I want to give for solving puzzles (as well as the difficulty of the puzzles/how fast I give hints out). So help me out and just post telling me that you're interested. You don't have to 100% commit at this time (though being fairly sure would be nice) and you don't have to commit to a team yet.

The event is going to be run to accommodate everyone's individual schedules. We'll have something like 10 puzzles, some with expected solve time of around an hour, and some more than that. You just click on the puzzle when you want to start it, and it automatically starts a timer for that puzzle for your team. This way you can start a puzzle when you know you have time for it, and we just award points based on the fastest solves later. You'll probably spend a full week working through the puzzles (one or two per night as you see fit), but like I said, it won't demand your full attention every second of the day if you play it right. You won't need to take days off work for it.

I've chosen December 4th as the date. I won't be ready before Thanksgiving, and I'd rather not run it immediately following Thanksgiving, as people will be doing family functions. The hunt will run probably over the course of 5 or so days of part-time solving, and may be sooner for your team, depending on how hard you want to work on the puzzles. It's looking like we'll have probably around 12 puzzles for the final hunt, some easy, some hard.

If this is a horrible time frame for you, let me know now and suggest an alternative! If most people don't like this date, then I'll try to reschedule it somehow. Hopefully most people are indifferent to it, though.

Remember, you don't have to be at your computer the minute the hunt opens. It's just when the puzzles will be made available to all teams. When someone on your team first clicks a puzzle, that's when your timer will start for that puzzle.

Team registration is now open! Form a team of (maximum) 2 Eliters/Karters and choose a team name. Let me know via IM or in this topic.

Just a bump to remind people that the hunt is about a week away. If you haven't put yourself on a team yet, you should think about that. Puzzle writers should try to finalize their puzzle and submit it to me along with 3 progressively easier hints and a full written solution.

If for some reason the website doesn't manage to get finished or everyone is super busy, maybe we'll reschedule. But I'd prefer not to if possible.

Okay, due to a variety of factors (including the availability of many of the hunters and my own schedule), I've decided to postpone the hunt until January 3, 2010. It's an extra 4 weeks to help me get ready, plus most people will be less busy during the first week of January than they are now.

Hopefully this delay doesn't cause people problems. I've spoken to many of the interested hunters and they're all in favor of the date change, so I think we should be fine.

Friendly bump.

The day is getting closer, though we've run into a little hiccup. A power surge has destroyed some of Neo's equipment that he was running the website server on. We're going to try to initiate some workarounds, and hopefully we won't need to postpone again, but unfortunately we can't make guarantees about it.

If you haven't submitted to me full solutions for puzzles you were working on (includes: 3 hints, written solution, and complete, proofread puzzle), please do that ASAP. You can do it on a google spreadsheet and then share the document with me, using my gmail address.

If you haven't decided on a team of 2, best to do that as soon as you can. It's fine to work by yourself if you're up to the challenge, or if you have absolutely no friends. I won't judge.

The 2010 Puzzle Hunt website is now live.

http://elitepuzzlehunt.patrickjohannessen.com/

All hunters should proceed to the site as soon as possible, create an account (one per person!), create/join a team (which is permanent!) and prepare yourselves. Puzzles should be up in about 12 hours, if things proceed as planned.

As I've only recently made this website specifically for The Elite's use, we were still ironing out some kinks as late as an hour ago. As such, there may still be one or two bugs, despite Infil and my's efforts to catch them. If you believe you have found a problem, please let one of us know immediately so it can be fixed! We're all friends here, so let's help each other out.

It's super important that you guys look over the rules and understand the scoring system and how the hunt will be run. It's especially important you read the rules about how we plan on handling the solving of puzzles that were written by competitors. And, of course, to register your teams before the hunt starts.

It will start some time Sunday evening, no earlier than 7 pm EST and no later than midnight EST. It just depends on a few factors that Neo and I still have to straighten out before the deadline, so we want to have a bit of a buffer zone there.

If you have questions, now is the time to ask them! Ask me in here, or on AIM.

THE HUNT IS NOW LIVE!

Begin solving at http://elitepuzzlehunt.patrickjohannessen.com/

If you have written a puzzle for this hunt and are competing, please talk to Infil about whether or not your other teammate will be attempting your puzzle without any input from you. If you start the timer for your own puzzle, it is assumed your teammate will be attempting it! If you'd prefer to just take the 4 points, then leave the puzzle unstarted and talk to Infil about it.

Good luck to everyone! And remember, discuss any problems you have with the site with Neo or Infil, we'll be around keeping our eye on the hunt as much as we can.

The hunt will be online until 11:59 PM Sunday, January 10th. Full solutions will be posted the next day, as well as results.

Try to finish all the puzzles by then. Keep in mind that 6, 12, and 18 hours after you start a puzzle, you get a hint. After 18 hours, the three hints together should make it reasonably clear how to solve the puzzle from start to end, so try to solve them all!
