I knew our Preds Champ would get a kick out of this GNC, so I allowed him to download it early if in return he'd do a running commentary while he watched. That turned out QUITE WELL, and he
is the expert after all, so I'll share that with you!
Thiradell (5:36:04 PM): here we goooooooooooooo
Thiradell (5:40:19 PM): whoa, camera zoomed way out for penalty kicks
Thiradell (5:40:24 PM): can't say I'm a fan of this angle either
Thiradell (5:42:08 PM): heh
Thiradell (5:42:12 PM): the 4th one went in, don't whine
Thiradell (5:50:12 PM): Brick wins penalty kicks, as I expected
Thiradell (5:50:27 PM): wasn't impressed with Ng or QB in the 2008 GNC
Thiradell (5:50:29 PM): for penalty kicks
Thiradell (5:50:37 PM): and Brick sounded skilled from the RMC report
Thiradell (5:53:33 PM): ugh, Ngamer missed two layups, not good
Thiradell (5:53:37 PM): (moving on to basketball)
Thiradell (5:54:31 PM): whoa, lighting it up now though
Thiradell (5:56:21 PM): heh, pretty clear from the layups that Brick doesn't play basketball and won't match 7/8
Thiradell (5:58:09 PM): wow, it only got uglier
Thiradell (5:58:13 PM): Third is 2/2 on predictions
Thiradell (6:02:49 PM): solid 10-yard throw in football from Ngamer, again it appears Ng has football experience whereas Brick doesn't seem to
Thiradell (6:03:37 PM): hmm, might have to take that back after a solid 15-yard showing from Thingy, he's got pretty good form
Thiradell (6:12:07 PM): wow, Ng showing off in the football toss from 20 yards, 3/3 predictions for Third
Thiradell (6:43:57 PM): loving the editing in the long jump
Thiradell (6:44:09 PM): last year's was fairly tedious to watch
Thiradell (6:49:16 PM): 14'8 is nice
Thiradell (6:49:20 PM): nice summaries given by Jimbo
Thiradell (6:54:21 PM): Brick's legs giving him the broad jump didn't bother me, I had full confidence that Ng would have a higher vertical, which he did
Thiradell (6:54:26 PM): 4/4 in preds
Thiradell (6:56:28 PM): 40-yard dash filmed well overall, I liked the picture and stopwatch still
Thiradell (6:56:54 PM): shame of the order of events, Ng should go up 5-1 here assuming he can get the 400m, when I still think it'll be 5-4 overall
Thiradell (6:58:55 PM): great pace maintained by Ng in the 400m
Thiradell (6:59:01 PM): 6/6 on preds
Thiradell (7:01:13 PM): nice tackle from Brick, I like the duckish stalk also
Thiradell (7:01:23 PM): IMO Ng should be thinking "I need to go for the tackle here"
Thiradell (7:01:35 PM): yes!
Thiradell (7:02:44 PM): YES, Brick wins, was pretty nervous there, but 7/7
Thiradell (7:03:16 PM): I'll go ahead and give a shout out to Jimbo's bulging biceps
Thiradell (7:05:06 PM): scrolling through the preds, looks like I'm the only 7/7
Thiradell (7:06:18 PM): lots of people thought Ng would win the penalty kicks
Thiradell (7:06:59 PM): before this sumo begins, I'll say I think Scott will win 2-1, Ng getting one due to experience and tactics
Thiradell (7:08:14 PM): heh, almost looks like a planned comedic effort with throwing the dirt over the shoulders, Brick perplexedly mimicking Ngamer
Thiradell (7:11:57 PM): wow, maybe not, Brick showed Ng what was up on that first round
Thiradell (7:12:58 PM): hahaha, Ng getting ready for a footrace in round #2
Thiradell (7:13:18 PM): very nice effort from Ngamer
Thiradell (7:14:09 PM): whoa, the winner
Thiradell (7:14:17 PM): so that gets thrown out I guess
Thiradell (7:15:26 PM): yes, the easy victory in arm wrestling that I expected
Thiradell (7:15:30 PM): my word, looks like an 8/8 from Third!
Thiradell (7:16:59 PM): well I followed some pretty simple principles when predicting
Thiradell (7:17:14 PM): Thingy would win strength-based events + penalty kicks, while Ng would win running/jumping/basketball events
Thiradell (7:17:32 PM): Ng also impressed me with his football heaving in '08, so I gave him the football toss
Thiradell (7:18:11 PM): I'm psyched about taking on Ngamer, I think we'd be very competitive
Thiradell (7:27:49 PM): well, I'm off to make love to Jon's mor
Thiradell (7:27:53 PM): uh, I mean
Comments: That wasn't a comedy routine!
On mounting the dohyÅ the wrestler performs a number of rituals derived from Shinto practice. Facing the audience, he claps his hands and then performs the leg-stomping shiko exercise to drive evil spirits from the dohyÅ as the gyÅji who will coordinate the bout announces the wrestlers' names once more. Stepping out of the ring into their corners, each wrestler is given a ladleful of water, the chikara-mizu, with which he rinses out his mouth; and a paper tissue, the chikara-gami, to dry his lips. Then both step back into the ring, squat facing each other, clap their hands, then spread them wide (traditionally to show they have no weapons). Returning to their corners, they each pick up a handful of salt which they toss onto the ring to purify it.We haven't had salt handy, so in 2006 we used snow, in 2008 we used sand, and this year we used blades of grass.
* my "come on!" wasn't because I thought he had missed, I was just upset about already being in such a hole and then having Thingy knock in an impossible ball way up in the corner like that. but yes, it WAS whining
* I shot those opening layups left handed, since it would only cost a second if I missed. you're right though, pretty embarrassing to miss two!
* Thingy landed a little awkwardly on his second broad jump and tweaked his knee. I don't know how much that was bothering him for the runs, but it seemed to at least hamper him a bit on his vertical attempts
* yes, I didn't like the order of events either. we'd been planning to save the basketball shots until near the end, but had to adjust the schedule and do PKs and Around the World at the same place, as the high school did not have any soccer nets. after the 40 I gave Thingy the option of doing the tackling ahead of the 400, but he declined saying that he just wanted to get the run over with
* heh, glad you enjoyed those tackles. yes sir, that was a fun event, glad it got voted in!
* I
welcome the challenge* hey now!
EDIT - Thingy was walking around taking pictures throughout the day. This seems like a strong opportunity to share a few of my favorites.
The soccer goal we used was pretty beaten up, with the net falling apart. Luckily I'd anticipated that and brought along some duct tape, which I sky high'd to stick up against the top bar.

Jim held the tape measure in place while I marked out our official free throw and 3 point distance targets with sidewalk chalk. For some reason these blue Xs didn't show up at all on the video, but as you can tell they were very visible in person.

(and yes, we did get some weird looks from people as we were setting this stuff up, with our cameras and camcorders going off all the time)
I brought along a rake to smooth out the sand after each jump and make sure our markings were accurate. It worked super!

After we'd made long jumping look so easy, Jim decided to try his hand. What a disaster! He left the ground about 4 feet too early, and his "jump" looked more like a high step crossed with a trip. We were fortunate that Thingy caught the attempt on camera.

Here was the alternative GNC cover shot, where we tried to look more intense and ultra-hardcore. Thingy preferred this picture, but Jim liked the other one better.
