Movie Marathon #3
« on: December 27, 2009, 02:08:00 pm »

We're back again! For the 3rd "twice-a-yearly" Movie Marathon! Me and my pal will be starting watching films at 10:00 CET on the 29th this month. (~39 hours to go as I type this). Please view the two previous marathon topics for additional details: http://perfectdarkelite.yuku.com?topic=14171
http://perfectdarkelite.yuku.com?topic=14704

Same rules as previous times; a maximum 5 minutes of break between the films. All films have been double checked to make sure they are all functioning. We'll purchase lots of Coke, sweets, energy pills, energy drinks etc etc and our food will be Tacos.

The selection of films is pretty similar to the previous marathon, that is, relatively modern. (if you compare our selection from the 1st of our marathons where we had at least one film from every decade and none really new feature). We have included many fresh titles released in this year of 2009, all together with some classics. Lastly, there are some films included that we think will be a pleasure to see again. I should also mention that the length of all the featured films are the most equal yet, that is, we haven't got any 3 hour-long movie (the longest one being "only" 154 minutes), but at the same time we haven't got any film shorter than 85 minutes.

Here's the schedule with some inside information on every film:

29th December

10:00 - Grand Hotel - 1932 - 108 min - Black & White - 7.7/10 at imdb
This Academy Award winning film for best picture is actually the only film EVER to just win the best picture category without even being nominated for any other category! (bear in mind they only had like 10ish categories back then, but it's still pretty weird if you ask me). Therefore, according to the history books, it's the "worst" best picture winner ever. We've both watched this one before, but it'll be interesting to watch it again.

11:48
- Break

11:53 - Paris, Texas - 1984 - 140 min - Color - 7.9/10 at imdb
One of the most acclaimed films of the 80s none of us yet haven't seen. Included in "1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die", "Empire 500" among other notable lists.

14:13 - Break

14:18 - (500) Days of Summer - 2009 - 95 min - Color - 8.1/10 at imdb - #223 on top 250
None of us really know anything about this film; apart its odd title and from being a highly praised romantic comedy. Nevertheless, we hope it'll be an exciting watch.

15:53 - Break

15:58 - MASH - 1970 - 112 min - Color - 7.8/10 at imdb
Geez, it was ages ago I watched this one (my buddy haven't seen it yet, though).

17:50 - Break

17:55
- Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans - 1927 - Black & White (Silent) - 8.3/10 at imdb - #191 on top 250
One of the very best silent films. The main reason we included this one, was that it's one of 6 films my pal haven't seen of the top 250. As for me, it'll be a pleasure to see this one again.

19:26
- Break

19:31
- Koroshiya 1 (Ichi the Killer) - 2001 - 124 min - Color - 7.2/10 at imdb
We've both heard lots of stuff about this infamous Asian feature (being claimed the most shocking film ever and so on) and we're both eager to see what all the talk is about.

21:35
- Break

21:40
- Anatomy of a Murder - 1959 - 154 min - Black & White - 8.2/10 at imdb - #245 on top 250
Again, this is one of the few films my pal hasn't seen of the top 250. It is also the longest feature of this marathon and the last of 3 black & white films.

30th December:

00:14
- Break

00:19
- Harold and Maude - 1971 - 88 min - Color - 8.1/10 at imdb
Cult! I've seen this some time ago, but it'll be fun re-treasuring it. Hopefully, I'll like it more after the 2nd viewing.

01:47
- Break

01:52
- Vals Im Bashir (Waltz with Bashir) - 2008 - 87 min - Color (animated) - 8.0/10 at imdb
Originally we included this in the previous marathon as a "reserve film". Now, 6 months later, it's finally time to sit through this prizewinning animated feature.

03:19
- Break

03:24 - Bringing Out the Dead - 1999 - 117 min - Color - 6.7/10 at imdb
This film we have by far least expectations from of the entire marathon. Scorsese directs, which should make it solid, but at the same time it's the only film that has got under 7 on imdb. Hopefully, this film should be relatively easy to sit through.

05:21
- Break

05:26
- Batoru rowaiaru (Battle Royale) - 2000 - 122 min - Color - 7.9/10 at imdb
The second Asiatic film of the marathon is also, like the first one, Ichi the Killer, extremely violent and bloody. However, this one is more widely acclaimed.

07:28
- Break

07:33
- La cérémonie - 1995 - 108 min - Color - 7.5/10 at imdb
I'm not sure about my pal, but this is without a doubt the film that I am most looking forward to of this whole marathon. We've both seen it but that wasn't really near yesterday, what can it be, 7-9-years ago? And we both remember it to be quite chilly with an exceptional, riveting conclusion. This is an underseen French shocker.

09:21
- Break

09:26
- Zombieland - 2009 - 85 min - Color - 8.0/10 at imdb
The horror comedy Zombieland focuses on two men who have found a way to survive a world overrun by zombies...

10:51
- Break

10:56
- Moon - 2009 - 93 min - Color - 8.0/10 at imdb

Astronaut Sam Bell has a quintessentially personal encounter toward the end of his three-year stint on the Moon, where he, working alongside his computer, GERTY, sends back to Earth parcels of a resource that has helped diminish our planet's power problems.

12:29 - Break

12:34 - 28 Weeks Later - 2007 - 96 min - Color - 7.1/10 at imdb
Another Zombie movie! We've seen the original "28 Days Later", but not this one. Hope it'll keep our minds in top-shape.

14:10 - Break

14:15 - Donnie Darko - 2001 - 109 min - Color - 8.3/10 at imdb - #124 on top 250
We've both seen this one, but only once before, so we're both a bit tempted re-watching it.

16:04 - Break

16:09 - Sällskapsresan - 1980 - 104 min - Color - 7.2/10 at imdb
WOW, I'm a bit amazed this film has over 2000 votes on imdb! If you ask any swede, he or she will know what "Sällskapresan" is; an audience-friendly comedy about a charter trip.

17:53 - END OF MARATHON

If we manage to sit through all these 17 features, which is our main goal, we've watched approximately 30½ hours of film! That is 30 minutes better than our current record. But, as last time, we will include 2 "reserve-films" if we're not feeling too tired...

Reserve-Film #1:

17:58 - Road to Perdition - 2002

19:51 - Break

Reserve-Film #2:

19:56 - Midnight Cowboy - 1969

21:45 - THE END

(We've seen both reserve-films before and we know what to expect)

That's all folks! Do you think we'll manage to sit through all films? Discuss! And wish us the best of luck!

Hmm, can't say I'm too familiar with most of the movies here...I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on a few of those, though. I think you'll get through everything, but not the two reserve films.

nothin' soothes me more than a groove that boosts me
nothin' boosts me more, or suits me beautifully
there's nothin' you can do to me; stab me, shoot me

I'm surprised your friend still agrees to do this! 32 hours of sitting and watching movies is crazy but after your quality performance in the last marathon, I believe you'll pull it off. I've seen 9/17, and also both reserve films. Personally, I doubt I could stay awake through Moon and Donnie Darko so far into the marathon. They aren't bad movies but they're both pretty slow and a little weird (Donnie moreso). Anatomy of a Murder is probably my favorite, but Zombieland is fun and fast-paced so I think it's well-placed, and could help keep you awake. Really, you could be so tired by that point that you could fall asleep during anything. Good luck!

More than 48 hours has passed since we stopped watching films. This time, however, we didn't beat our record It started out very good, and this marathon featured probably the best films overall compared to the previous marathons, but somehow we got tired faster than last time, especially my pal We "only" sat through 14 of 17 planned films (~24 hours of film; that is 6 hours less then last time which is pretty embarrassing), the last being "Moon" that both of us had a very hard time staying awake while it screened.

Anyway, none of the 14 films we saw were bad. "Sunrise", "La ceremonie" and "Zombieland" were the films I enjoyed the most. I think my pal liked "Paris, Texas" a bit more than I did, but I certainly didn't defame the film. "(500) Days of Summer" was a disappointment and "Ichi the Killer" was more fun than scary/unpleasant to watch (probably the worst film of this marathon). Battle Royale was an adrenaline kick and helped us stay awake for the next 1½ films. "Moon" was an interesting but for the time being, a rather tedious watch. And all the films I haven't mentioned they were all solid.
