Speed skating is my favourite because it's basically the only event involving Dutchies; or where they have any chance of winning anyway. Apart from that I'm not watching anything. It's a shame Ice Hockey isn't popular here at all (I'm saying Ice Hockey because Field Hockey is in the top 3 of most popular sports here, and that sucks hardcore).

Meh, Goose is obv talking down Canada to brace himself emotionally if they lose.  Everybody does it all the time.
You're honestly a fucking faggot.  Looks like California's homosexuality is finally wearing off on your liberal POS ass..  EVERYTHING you say is negative.  You're worse than Clemens talking about GE.  I'm not sure I've ever seen anything uplifting or interesting posted by you.  You ARE the reason there is so much hate in this world, or at least you embody that reason.
LOL oops, struck a nerve.  Must have come too close to the truth

I may say negative things because I at least have an opinion and stick to them.  I'm not going to say NBC coverage is great when it is pretty shitty and shortsighted, etc..  I'm not a negative person, but come on - look at these boards.  It's just "Happy Birthday!!11!" or you trolling or random POS topics that aren't even worth opening.  I snipe around here every few days, don't even bother with lol-chat anymore, and every once in a while feel like voicing an opinion about math or something that strikes my nerves which is very often different than how you feel.

What about Luge?  Seriously though, I'm full of questions: why do you like biathlon but dislike nordic combined so much? Entertainment value? The "silly" combination itself? And why do you enjoy biathlon in that case and not cross country skiiing? How can bobsleigh be more awesome than alpine skiing? And all of your "awesome sports" canadians happen to be good or comparatively good at in relation to, let's say cross country skiing/ski jumping and in that case, it's the same as with me; I kind of like the sports Sweden takes/have a chance taking medals in, with the huge exception of curling . That's basically the same as Max argument earlier saying that he enjoys skating becuase there are dutchies in it. By nature I have never really liked sports with judges, I mean freestyle, figure skating etc it just doesn't seem logic to me. Lastly, it's funny because I have never liked skating (short track is usually very dramatic, though); I really should like it, but I can't find a reason why not. Perhaps you can't either with your favorite/most dislike sports

Also, it really sucks the way the ski jumping events are set up in the Olympics imo. I almost hate that for being a judging sport; naturally the only thing they should concentrate on is how far the athlete jumps with his skies and not how elegant the jump is itself (although the one who jumped the longest almost always wins). And that is like the only event where ladies doesn't compete in Olympics. Odd if you ask me.

Biathlon is THE MOST EPIC WHEN all the top skiiers go into the shooting gallery at the same time... then they start shooting, people start missing and it is PURE CHAOS.  Probably the most exciting 40 seconds in ANY event (aside from like a penalty shot in overtime in hockey.)

Luge is a "bad" sport.  Easily the worst sliding sport.

The problem with Alpine Skiing is that there is only ONE run... at least in Bobsleigh, Luge, Skeleton, you get to do 4 runs, so the best person through 4 runs wins.  With 1 run, all sorts of random stuff can happen.  It's a major flaw in the system imo.

Nordic Combined sucks because... well what is Nordic Combined?  Is it even a sport?  Does anyone actually compete in this outside of the Olympics?  Just seems completely random.

Ladies don't do Ski Jumping because;
a) their centre of gravity is in their hips, not their shoulders like men.  This makes them fly differently (and dangerously.)
b) they don't have enough countries who compete in women's ski jumping.  There was some controversy here because they tried to get it added, but the IOC didn't allow it.

Canada isn't *that* good at Figure Skating or Biathlon

I admit that Curling is an "acquired taste" just like Golf and NASCAR (other sports I like) and I probably wouldn't like Curling if I wasn't Canadian.  But when a skip hits a double run take out with the hammer it's soooooo exciting.  It's worth the wait I guess.  It's a GREAT sport to watch when you are busy doing something else (like sewing socks, eating supper or watching other sports) because then you can just pay attention to the end of the ends

That list is just my opinion anyways.

very well, but why is Luge the worst sliding sport? Because it is the most dangerous? Skeleton seems more affected imo and not as classic as Luge. Not as fast either. As for Alpine skiing, they only get to do one run, but usually a very long one 80-120 sec), apart from the sliding sports where one run takes like 40-50 sec. And they do have "super combined" in the alpine events or what it's called (that is what is it called in swedish) when they do downhill and then slalom, but yeah I get your meaning.

Nordic combined is fascinating imo, it's basically a variation of biathlon, but it lacks a bit due to the relatively low competition. (same goes for Ski-orienteering, lol, not included in the Olympics)

I agree with you on biathlon, that is like the most exciting thing ever on Olympcis together with a really thrilling hockey game. It's so "easy" to fail in that which makes it awesome. One miss and your down. Hockey, cross-countrty skiing and biathlon is easily top 3 for me, partly because there's most competition in these sports. Well maybe more people skate and do snowboarding than compete in biathlon but I've never really got any interest in those events.

edit: "Ladies don't do Ski Jumping because;
a) their centre of gravity is in their hips, not their shoulders like men. This makes them fly differently (and dangerously.)"

I had no idea abot that, honestly, wtf. Where can I read about this? I only thought it was because of obj b.
btw, do you agree that they only should concentrate on how long they jump and not how good? This of course makes the event more dangerous (but ten times more exciting). I'm certainly not a fan of judging sports.

I don't know where you can read about it, but it's true (about the center of gravity) and that is why it took so long for them to even start participating.  The low amount of people involved only makes it less likely for it to appear in the Winter Olympics.

Sliding facefirst is more interesting than sliding on your back.  Going in a cart is even more awesome.  This is just standard convention

I agree that judging sports sucks, ESPECIALLY ski jumping since there is just another way to measure the athletes (distance) but I guess it's necessary.  I don't know ANYTHING about ski jumping so I'm not in a place to criticize the system.

Cross country skiing is mainly boring because the "length of competition" to "exciting moments" ratio.  It's only exciting in the last 45 seconds and even then almost always there is not a Canadian involved

I am REALLY looking forward to the 50km mass start on the final day though.  When a race is REALLY long (like the Marathon or Triathlon in the Summer Olympics) it makes it super epic to watch, because you've seen the whole thing and then it's like "OMG IT'S ALL COMING DOWN TO THIS!"  Plus the 50km XC ski is one of the most prestigious medals at the Winter Olympics.

Notable moments from Canada vs. USA

- Sidney Crosby deflecting Brian Rafalski's shot into his own net.

- Martin Brodeur's epic baseball swing which resulted in Canada FAILING to break out a perfect pass and USA scoring.

- SUPERSTAR PATRICE BERGERON being on a breakaway and being the slowest player in the tournament, resulting in him being caught up with by some random ass third line American Dman.

- SUPERSTAR COREY PERRY failing to realize that when you are battling for the puck near an empty net, it's not a good idea to hesitate putting your stick on the puck.

Good thing our team is FULL OF SUPERSTARS LIKE COREY PERRY AND PATRICE BERGERON.

That was a crazy day at the Olympics with US beating Canada in the preliminary hockey game, Bjoerndalen's poor performance in biathlon 15k, and Bode Miller now having 3 medals (1 of each).  Germany made a big push to contend for the #1 spot in medal totals.  I will only rank the top 10 as the rest are pretty much out of it at this point.

EPIC WIN!

SERIOUSLY, I AM SO HAPPY.  THIS FEELING I HAVE RIGHT NOW AND HAD ALL NIGHT CELEBRATING WITH MY FRIENDS IS TANTAMOUNT TO WHAT I IMAGINE A FLYERS STANLEY CUP WOULD FEEL LIKE.  BEER HAS NEVER TASTED SO GOOD!

I can't wait to download this game and make some sweet animated gifs of the pwnage.

DEAR CANADA, SUCK IT, pt. 2!

Love,

Canada outplayed them throughout most of the game aside from the early 3rd period penalty troubles. Ryan Miller stood on his head though and had a great game while Brodeur was sub par. Goaltending was definitely the difference in the game, but a very exciting game to watch start to finish.

First, I'd just like to direct Goose to a dictionary, where he can properly learn the definition of the word tantamount.

And now, an Olympic Tale, a picture book.

At first, everyone counted Team USA out.  They were all like

But we were all like,

We also added, it's

So then,

Later, some more

Over time, people started to believe thanks to the effort of people such as hockey god Chris Drury.  This is probably him:

And can you believe it?  Unlike in the NHL, the spirit of International competition holds the referees to treat all players equally.  Sidney Crosby's undisciplined stick can't evade authority's eye on this stage.  Our great nation exposed him as a complete fraud (-3)!

Before the end of the game, Canada tried to say they were hard.  But Ryan Kesler would have none of that wacky untruth.  He responded,

In summary, here some symbolism.  It is a White Goose getting owned.  As if we haven't seen that happen enough around here...

Lol everyone agrees canada severely out played the americans and lost a game due to bad luck and some poor plays by veterans. Oh well America has insane good luck with snagging medals this olympics due to other competitors crashing and other random unlikely events. I find it funny overall, but it just goes to show you 1 game or 1 run proves nothing at the olympics, any random team or person can win a medal do to fluke.

But then again I guess that is what makes the olympics so hard to win, the extreme high fluke/luck factor compared to things like say stanely cup or world championship games.

Canada vs russia in the quarters is funny because they are both the most talented teams by far. No dispute there. See how this plays out in the end

lets take GE by example.

1 speed run agent. no retries. pretty sure any of the top 5 could be screwed over by some random luck factor making it questionable. or even on sa/00 anything can happen in 1 run. or 1 game

Last night, the American men's hockey team beat the Canadian team in a hard fought, well played, fair sporting match. Afterwards, there was nothing but a mass of Americans arrogantly offending Canadians about how they beat us at "Canada's sport" despite very few Americans watching the game and actually being aware of it happening until after the fact. Most Americans do not care about the Olympic ice hockey tournament, yet they saw this as an opportunity to inflate their ego and bully others.

Tonight, Canadian pair Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir beat the American pair Meryl Davis and Charlie White in a hard fought, well played, fair ice dancing competition. Afterwards, there were nothing but mutual congratulations. Virtue and Moir were gracious in their victory, congratulating Davis and White on a great skate. When Virtue and Moir accepted their medals, they shook hands and exchanged hugs with all the other medalists, and they skated a victory lap with Davis and White, Canadian and American flags flying in the air. Figure skating has been a longtime success of America... Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinsky, Nancy Kerrigan and most recently Evan Lysacek to name only a few of America's great skaters. I am yet to hear any Canadian say "SUCK IT AMERICAFAGS" like so many Americans said to Canadians last night. Tonight was an exhibition of grace, humility, sportsmanship and love.

That my friends is the difference between the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America. One is a mean, egocentric bully, and the other is a country full of grace, peace, love and harmony.

PS: Using the "nobody cares about figure skating" excuse is bullshit.  Last night's Canada/USA game scored an 8.2 in the ratings, while the ice dance original dance (wasn't even the finals) scored a 17.0.  I'd ask you to tell me which sport more people care about but we can let the statistics do the talking.

No, it was an incentive to win our first gold in Canada (something we failed to do in Montreal '76 and Calgary '88.)

From Goose:
That my friends is the difference between the Dominion of Canada and the United States of America. One is a mean, egocentric bully, and the other is a country full of grace, peace, love and harmony.

---

That quote is so full of your current emotions and grossly false.  Wait until you're back on level ground and think about it again.

1)  When Canada obviously beats USA to win the Gold, you will be right back in this topic going LOL SUCK IT CANADA PWNED YOU IN THE REAL GAME
2)  You are so far from graceful and peaceful, it is just hilarious
3) The athletes celebrated in a team event after a major upset despite being outplayed.  That wouldn't happen in an individual sport - go look at all of the other medals Americans are winning, and I'm sure they are much more gracious.
4)  When Canada wins the gold, I guarantee you their celebration will be more epic than the American's after this preliminary game win.  And the win will be talked about even more in Canadian media than this one was in American media.
5)  If Canada beat USA in basketball, football, baseball, you'd be laughing so hard also.

USA cares way more about figure skating than hockey.  But ice dancing?  Come on, who even thinks of ice dancing when they think of figure skating?  The womens program is what this country is looking forward to.  Sitting 5/6 right now, I'm sure we were hoping for better

Anyway, this was a joyous win for US Hockey, but everybody knows it is meaningless, and you'll get to celebrate too.  There is something fun about crushing the spirits of the host country in one of the most anticipated events of the olympics, on the largest TV sporting audience in Canadian history, though...  I'll enjoy it while it lasts.

GO USA!  But damn Germany is coming up fast

America didn't even celebrate after winning.  They just took it as an opportunity to make fun of Canada.

That's basically a rewording of the difference.

Canada CELEBRATES it's own victories.  America BULLIES and HUMILIATES those it defeats.

Look, you're just not allowed to play this card.  During the game, Canadians in the arena were BOOING Team USA, and CHANTING Miller's name after goals allowed.  This behavior, normally reserved for the edgiest of NHL rivalries (or anyone who plays the Flyers?), has no place in Olympic hockey.  You want to talk about grace after the fact (of which you personally have displayed none, as octo pointed out), how about during the game, which matters far more.  Another reason your argument holds no water is because ice dancing is not our national pastime, or the event on which we hang our national identity. The event also didn't take place on our home soil.

Look, USA hadn't beaten Canada in the Olympics in 50 years.  FIFTY.  If you can't deal with the resulting exuberance, that's on you.  Not us.

Besides, you can have your day if there is a rematch in the GMG.  The real Canada came to play last night, and that's the team I expect to see from here on out.  Even Joe Thornton wasn't completely invisible.  Yikes.  I am back to being completely afraid.  (But we're not without our day in the sun )

Oh yeah, DK, totally forgot about the Crosby tears pic (it has, after all, been more than a week since the NHL has been playing games).  Perfect!

USA wasn't exuberant.  They didn't care about winning at all.  The only thing they cared about was Canada losing.

THAT is the difference.

Lol @ Joe Thornton.  I believe I've said since LAST February not to put him on the team because of how much he chokes and his performance in the most recent Stanley Cup Playoffs only cemented that (probably his worst EVER.)  Fortunately there are 19 other talented skaters to hide him here on Team Canada.  You can't honestly tell me that replacing Thornton with Savard wouldn't have made made a world of difference for the better.

I just wonder when that guy will ever have a big game in a big moment...

That's also something that worries me about Luongo.  There are no complaints about his play against Norway or Germany but yeah... only 11 career playoff wins (compared to Fleury's 30 and Brodeur's 98...) so I am concerned.

But I can find some comfort in the fact that Roberto Luongo isn't quite as much of a choker as Joe Thornton.  Just gotta hope he doesn't get diarrhea going into the first OT period

Colin Cowherd had a great bit on the radio today talking about US vs Canada sports.  Apparently Canada came out with a statement blaming the oversupportive crowds for their failure to perform against the "own the podium" initiative.  And you wonder why some people in America make fun of Canada.

He also alluded to the exact things Goose said - we're bullies, aggressive, etc, and that is precisely why we succeed in sports.  Countries with similar mentalities (Germany, Russia) enjoy similar success, where others similar to Canada (Switzerland, Australia) don't.

Goose, you have to realize Canada set themselves up to be laughed at after this loss.  Canada is very protective of Hockey (and now claim it isn't "their sport" because the national sport is Lacrosse, as if Canadians actually feel that way), are heavily favored, made a huge deal about this game going into it despite not really mattering, and spent $120,000,000 on an "own the podium" initiative.

Just let it go, and laugh back at us when you win Gold.

----

P.S., seeing what was basically the sharks playing for canada made me lol.  Maybe they should learn that THE SHARKS CHOKE and shouldn't be playing their top line at the end of the game :P

Hey guys, I thought of a funny subplot tagline for today's game:

USA/SWITZERLAND: Which goalie will be.... -iller???

That would be good if only America had a broadcasting company that actually cared about the quality of its programming.

NBC has 40 years (? so I hear) experience covering the olympics.  It might piss me off, and other people in this country, but they know what they are doing.  I may hate mainstream media decisions, but they have so much data that they've clearly structured their quality of programming to appeal to the largest audience, not the hardcore fans

No, they do not know what they are doing.

They both;

- show events hours after they already happened, show events nobody wants to see

- manage to lose $200million

To me, that sounds like they don't know what they are doing.

I'll just throw this in since the subject has shifted briefly toward NBC's coverage. I was watching a curling match the other day and heard one of the commentators refer to NBC as Nothing But Curling.

So I thought I'd stop by and add my own, blantantly unoriginal acronyms:

CNBC = Certainly Nothing But Curling
MSNBC = Must See Nothing But Curling

BTW, my jab is not aimed toward curling, as it is actually a game of strategy and fun to watch once you get to learn it. Of course we all know NBC knows the markets so well, hence my next acronym:

NBC = Network Backstabs Conan

We now return you to our regularly scheduled hockey fight, already in progress....

According to who?  They are beating American Idol last I heard, which is no small feat in US broadcasting.  They show what the masses want to see, and when the masses have time to see it.  Believe it or not, most people work and watch TV from 8-12, not during the day in the middle of the week.

I agree with octo here...everyone in chat this afternoon seemed to agree with Goose, but clearly the majority of people don't have a clue that the event is happening when it's happening, they just turn on their TV and wait for something cool to come on.  Most people are at work while the 42 people who aren't and care are waiting to see it on a delay.

Look at a team like Russia.  Alexander Ovechkin is a superstar.  So is Evgeni Malkin.  So is Ilya Kovalchuk.  So is Pavel Datsyuk.  So is Alex Semin.  Ilya Bryzgalov is the 2nd best goaltender in the world right now (next to Ryan Miller.)  Sergei Fedorov's credentials as far as experience and leadership go are head and heels above anything that anyone on Team Canada has (but then again Fedorov was Yzerman's wingman [I know they were both centres, but you get my point] so...)  Throw in 10 KHLers who kick more ass that we'd ever know in this shitty league run by Jews and Americans and you have yourself "a potent mix" as Col. Quatrich says in Avatar.

Ovechkin + Malkin + Semin + Datsyuk + Kovalchuk > any five Canadian forwards

Ovechkin + Malkin + Semin + Datsyuk + Kovalchuk vs. "superstars" Dan Boyle, Brent Seabrook, Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty is just about the biggest blood bath I've thought about since I saw the film 300 in theaters.

Bryzgalov or Nabokov > Luongo... I hope to God we have the sense to play Brodeur.

Markov and Gonchar on the PP are deadly.  Weber and Pronger are comparable, but the edge is definitely on the Russian's side.  Russia's defense are bigger, stronger, and can break the puck out better.

Russia has the most insane team ever ever ever ever ever ever ever ever.

Again.  OVECHKIN, MALKIN, KOVALCHUK, SEMIN, DATSYUK, GONCHAR, MARKOV

CROSBY, NASH, IGINLA, THORNTON, HEATLEY, PRONGER, WEBER (YES WEBER IS ACTUALLY OUR 2nd BEST OFFENSIVE DMAN)

octo's logic fail of nbc's been doing it for 40 years so they know what they're doing (you should know by now there are a lot of people who've been doing it the wrong way forever--sometimes I wonder how you even are winning about the same # of games this year in a GLB pro league than I did in 3)

seems like canada's newspapers are just as terrible as ours in terms of articles from what I've seen this week.  ZOMG CANADA ROXORS AND EVERYBODY ELSE SUCKS!

(I'd give canada the edge in grammar--but all that means is you beat a bunch of people with the same writing ability I had in 5th grade [and they all apparently have college degrees]).

How many easy clutch shots in curling do I have to see missed by supposed "great" players.  Give me a break.  I could make half of them given a month of practice and I know almost nothing about the game (btw--it really shouldn't be in the olympics at all as it really fits the definition of a game and not a sport--but that's another discussion/rant entirely).  [edit--I'm mostly referring to the what should be simple--hit the one stone out of the way and have the stone stay there instead of fly out of the circle--it's definitely the weakest event in terms of quality of people doing it that's for sure [hell athletes have even started doing bobsled lol]

Canada just won the most insane RACE in all of the Winter Olympics, the men's short track 5000m relay, to take the OVERALL GOLD MEDALS LEAD.

Canada played a very dominating hockey game the first 40 minutes, and almost had things tied up on them due to a series of bad bounces and collisions.

They will need puck luck to beat the americans as I have seen litteraly None of it this whole tournament for canada. Pucks aint going there way at all

Yeah, that final was intense allright; too bad Sweden "upset" Canada in women's Curling  Canada has still a very good chance at winning the medals total, though. Not too many events left

Yeah.  When Bernard was first announced on the team, I was pretty pissed.  She has 1 silver at the Scottie's (Canada's women's curling championships) while Jennifer Jones has won 4 golds at the Scottie's.  Bernard won me over with her good play, but I can't say I expected her to win the gold.  She did great and congratulations to Sweden on the hard earned victory.

But now it's time for...

CANADA vs. USA - Men's Speed Skating Team Pursuit Gold Medal Race

CANADA vs. NORWAY - Men's Curling Gold Medal Game

CANADA vs. USA - Men's Ice Hockey Gold Medal Game

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So much intensity!!

The four-man bobsleigh looks like it will come down to another CANADA vs. USA (though USA's Holcomb has a massive lead as of now) and we have another great medal shot in the men's snowboard parallel giant slalom.

The record for most golds at a Winter Olympics is 13 (Norway '02, USSR '76) and Canada can surely contend for that.  A new record of 14 is also within the realm of possibility even with all the misses we had this year.

An exciting game; when USA scored 2-2, I honestly thought they should come out as the winner, but I was wrong. I'm really impressed by the canadian determination and they were clearly the better team in the overtime (better overall, too). This also makes Canada historic; 14 Gold Medals in the same Olympics!

Here's my summary of Vancouver 2010:

The hockey tournament was overall good, but what makes me really sad is how superior both Canada and USA are in todays hockey. Finland taking the bronze is just lol. Their performance in the tournament was mediocre at best. Since I'm half a finn it feels pretty relieved that they did beat a somewhat tired Slovakia in the bronze medal game; a Slovakian team that looked very promising. I do hope this is the last time we'll see women's tournament since it's just a big joke imo. If not the European teams gets any better, remove women's hockey from the program. Same medalists in both the men and women's Ice Hockey, btw which should be unique.

Besides the Ice Hockey, this Olympics was great fun to watch (as usual) although this was probably the most scandalous so far, or? Correct me if I'm wrong, but this Olympic had it all in accidental way:

- one man died in luge pracitcing and many people got seriously injured in bobsleigh as well
- total chaos during women's and especially men's biathlon pursuit at the start
- the arrangers decided to proceed with women's downhill despite the fact that no competitor had done a single test run which resulted in many spectacular crashes (also, the arrangers had forgot to remove an huge bank at the finish)
- an ice-machine malfunctioned and destroyed the ice during some skating event
- women had the same course as men in the Ski-Cross finales which resulted in one or two concussions
- Petra Majdic fatal accident which could've been avoided if some safety net was put up, but the arrangers were simply too lazy
- the failure with the fourth pillar (or whatever it is called) during the opening ceremony. Did I forget something?

Sweden did pretty well (especially in Cross-Country skiing) and they upset Canada in women's curling which was quite awesome. Always nice to see another country than USA, Germany and especially Norway top the medal totals. Did South Korea achieve 6 gold medals!? All in Short Track? Also, Russia did only achieve 3 gold medals which much be their worst Olympics ever or something. As for Finland, they did poorly.

And I won't ever forget that disqualifying of Sven Kramer in the speed skating final although that was not a scandal by any means, but his own and/or his coach fault. I'm glad he already had an Olympic gold medal, but still.

Next big event is World Cup in South Africa; looking forward to it despite Sweden's not in it.
