Can you link the ESPN group directly or post the invite link or something.  The search on that site never works for me (and it wasn't just my old PC, apparently!)

Well I'll BE, what the heck ESPN.  Search not working here either.  The group page is

http://games.espn.go.com/pigskin-pickem/en/group?groupID=18518&selGrp=18518&entryID=267790

But don't know if that will help with being able to join.  If you can't search for the group in FF or IE, post here and I'll invite you using facebook instead.

It worked for me. Just type in NFL elite and the possible choices just fall down in a list. You can't actually hit enter or click anything to get to a new page.

That said, my pick is Eagles 38 - Texans 21

I keep editing back and forth between Eagles and Packers.  Think the Packers have the better team overall but the Eagles seem custom engineered to defeat the Packers 1v1 if it comes down to that.  What I'm really afraid if is losing to the Lions or some upstart team a la Cards in 2008.

The AFC pick is 40% not wanting to be all like "me too" (Steelers have the best AFC--AND Elite FFL-- team), 80% wishful thinking (because F the Steelers, Pats, & Jets... and picking the Ravens never seems to pan out), and 30% "hey, a case could be made for this really happening".

The Spread Bet Supercontest is now up and running!

It's based on the famous Hilton Vegas contest of the same name, and how it works is... everyone bets on 5 teams against the spread each week.  Every winning bet is worth +1, a push is valued at +1/2, and a loss nets you +0.  (Any bets you don't make are also worth 0, so it's in your best interests to get in the full 5 bets per week.)

Thingy and I are putting together a website to automate this Contest, but in the meantime we're going to be tracking it on a special Google Docs sheet, which can be found HERE:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvhZ2lt476FmdENPaFpIdmpjNHN2a1FISTEwNXZfcUE&hl=en_US

Just head there, log in to your google account if you aren't already, and enter the 5 teams you want to bet on each week.  I've given everyone who posted in this topic edit access so they can make their picks, but if you'd like to play along and I missed you, just post here or IM me and I'll fix that right up!

You can enter a new pick or edit one as much as you want, all matchups will stay unlocked until kickoff of that game.  Oh and if you want to play but don't get access before the games start tomorrow, just post your picks here and we'll honor them!

I'm going to edit the spreadsheet link into the first post as well, so you can just look there when you're ready to make your picks from now on.  (QB will put up the new lines and open the sheet for editing on Tuesday afternoons.)

The official Week 1 lines are:

I've been mesmerized by Ngamer's helmet pictures for some time now.  I am either a mad genius, or completely certifiable.

But isn't it completely UNCANNY how both conferences seem to be organized very closely to how the teams will be ordered after this season (starting with the top row, and going from the direction the helmets are facing backward in each row).  It's indeed plausible that the AFC's playoff teams are Chargers, Pats, Texans, Steelers, Chiefs, and Jets.  And it's EVEN MORE plausible that the NFC's six playoff teams are the Packers, Saints, Eagles, Rams, Lions, and Falcons. That ORDERINGS are even plausible, given the divisions.  And just look at the remaining teams in each conference.  Couldn't you see, in both cases, how this could correlate strongly with the final conference rankings???

I know, your mind is friggin' blown right now, but that's not even the craziest thing.  Wait for it.... I was also noticing week 1 matchups, and check THIS out:

Top Row, NFC: Saints/Pack, then Eagles/Rams.  Two week 1 matchups.
2x2 square, beginning of 2nd and 3rd rows.  Criss-cross them:  Lions/Bucs & Falcons/Bears.  Two week 1 matchups!
2x2 square, end of 3rd and 4th rows.  Up-and-down:  Giants/Redskins & 49ers/Hawks.  TWO WEEK 1 MATCHUPS!
---TRANSITION TO AFC--- Now imagine the NFC package positioned above and to the right of the AFC package
Vikings, lower left corner of NFC, & Chargers, upper right corner of AFC.  A WEEK 1 MATCHUP.
Leading 4x2 block, pairwise Up-and-down:  Steelers/Ravens, Texans/Colts, Browns/Bengals, Titans/Jags.  FOUR WEEK 1 MATCHUPS!!!!
2x1 block at the end 3rd and 4th rows.  Up-and-down: Raiders/Broncos.  A WEEK 1 MATCHUP.

So that leaves five AFC teams and three NFC teams whose helmets are NOT adjacent to their week one opponent.  AKA 75% of teams' helmets ARE ADJACENT.  But why stop there?  THE COWBOYS' AND THE JETS' HELMETS ARE IN THE SAME POSITION, THUS BOTH INTERCONFERENCE GAMES OF THE WEEK ARE NOW ACCOUNTED FOR.

Now the only non-adjacent pairs are NE/MIA, KC/BUF, and ARI/CAR.  But this is easily explained by my first point, that the helmets are some crystal ball into the future of this NFL season.  If the helmets are ordered truly as I hypothesize, there's no way the Pats and Fins could be in the same, or even adjacent rows, now is there?  A case could be made that ARI/CAR and KC/BUF are two games with teams that, pairwise, could be considered in the same-tier.  But I say to you, who are we to argue with the predetermined ordering of the all-knowing NFL helmet package????

WE ARE NO ONE.

tl;dr:
Ngamer's helmet pictures are a predetermination of the NFL standings, rife with week 1 matchups of adjacent helmets.  If this isn't proof positive the NFL is entirely fixed, I don't know what would be!

Alrighty, so what notable things happened this week?

- Brady and Henne's combined yardage of 923 passing yards is an a new NFL record (to answer Bosshardt's question).
- Tom Brady's pass to Wes Welker for a 99 yard touchdown was only the 12th 99-yard passing touchdown in NFL history, and also the first one in 3 years.
- Denver and Oakland just played one of the worst games of football we have ever seen, and Kyle Orton is surely the worst starting quarterback in the league.
- The Patriots, Packers, and Saints are going to be the 3 best teams this year, being 1a 1b and 1c. You clearly need a super elite quarterback to make it far in the league and teams like Indy/Jets/Bears/Ravens are probably screwed. The Jets proved me wrong last year by owning Brady but they'll never win the Superbowl in today's NFL with Sanchez.
- The Ravens are very good, and Flacco is too. Flacco isn't an elite quarterback but he's sure as hell good enough to shake the Steelers, as proven by week 1.
- Donovan McNabb now owns the record for fewest passing yards in a game where the QB played every snap.
- The entire NFC South is 0-1 and 3 of the teams played common opponents (NFC North), it was basically a complete wash.
- The Falcons are grossly overrated, as is Julio Jones and the farmland of draft picks they traded away to get him. I can't stand that organization mostly for how hyped they were last year, I never hopped aboard obviously.
- The Eagles can be a ridiculously scary team, custom built to beat the Packers in a head-to-head battle in the playoffs, but this will all be meaningless if Vick has a bad game or does not make it the entire season.
- The Colts are going to win 4 games this year, I think... Manning MVP based on that merit alone?
- The Bears defense is not dead, as I had hoped. They hold the Packers to about 11 points UNDER their average in each game they play, and because of this, I hate them a lot more than I normally do.
- The Lions are going to be very scary if they can keep Stafford healthy, their offense is clearly in rhythm, now if only they can fix that crappy secondary...
- 3 kickoff return TDs (one by the Pack snapping a 12 year streak) and many more punt returns for TDs (TED GINN JUNIOR BABY) tells me that teams now suck at tackling, get lazy on the returns because of the plethora of touchbacks (over 50 percent), or simply over-run the return guy and haven't praticed it enough yet.

I might make it a tradition to post walls of texts each week, with my opinions changing as I constantly get proven wrong. Hey it's better than a dead topic though.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Aaron Rodgers has the highest QB rating in the history of the NFL, sorry.

Oh, I also forgot to mention that LEARN TO PROPERLY TACKLE, JESUS CHRIST, YOU CAN'T BLAME THE LOCKOUT FOR YOUR LACK OF UNDERSTANDING THE FUNDAMENTAL ART OF TACKLING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING!

The Colts previous (can't count this years yet obv) five or so 1st round picks are all busts.  They were going downhill with or without him.

Jim--did you consider now the KR's aren't running back for the ball to catch it and instead are running forward/staying put as well as extra running room as possibly one of the reasons for the boom/bust kickoff returns?  With the lockout in place there wasn't much time to adjust and a lot of the ST'ers are kids who didn't exactly have a lot of time to be proficient at it (b/c none of them ever did obv).

[your point of shit tackling however is valid]

"You clearly need a super elite quarterback to make it far in the league "

just a few obv non super elite QB's to make the Superbowl recently Eli Manning (won),  Rex Grossman, Matt Hasselbeck.  Hell Jake Delhomme wasn't that long ago.

edit--Julio Jones looked ok to me.  Hard for a rookie WR/QB to learn the playbook in that short of time.

Ravens looking legit this year. I would have to agree the falcons are overrated, but you can't put too much value on one game.
Hopefully, Josh Freeman has a break out year. I'm really foward to see how this guy developes. He's definitely the guy for the Bucs.

The Pats defense/secondary is scaring the crap out of me. Hopefully they improve as the season goes on.
Embrace the grind.

In honor of Jim, I'll post some week 2 thoughts.

Coaches that should be immediately fired or at least on a very serious hot seat

Steve Spagnolo, Rams.  Punted fourth and 28 with 1:42 (or so) remaining and zero timeouts down 28-16.  Only way you do this if you think it's more likely the Giants will umm muff the punt than committing a stupid penalty (and far far worse are done somewhere every week)?  I don't understand why he's not immediately fired actually.  He quit and if you quit in the NFL you don't deserve your job.

Special team coach, Giants.  Didn't tell his punt returner or anyone on his fucking team "WHATEVER  YOU DO DON"T TOUCH THE BALL!"

Hot Seat
Jim Harbaugh, 49ers.  Yep, already should be on the hot seat for extremely questionable decisions.  From a bad espn article  "Leading 21-14 early in the fourth quarter, the Forty Niners hit a long field goal; the Cowboys were flagged. Jim Harbaugh had a choice of first down on the Dallas 22 with 11:16 remaining, but no three points, or a score of 24-14 and a kickoff from the 50"

edit--1st--when leading and presented with an opportunity to run more clock off + kick a FG (which from that distance is likely to go in) he kicked off from the 50 into the end zone negating the penalty (since everyone's kicking it into the end zone) instead of onside kicking it.   Not often a coach makes two mistakes in one decision.  That 1:30 or so he could've ran the clock out might've made Dallas not have enough time to tie the game as well, no?

Lol raiders
Hue Jackson threw a challenge flag on a touchdown--which is now a 15 yard penalty.  They don't read that silly offseason rule changes letter the NFL sends out every season.

Todd haley  lol Chiefs

Jack Del Rio  two words Luke Mccown.  Yep, start updating that resume.

Other WTF ness

Miami called a timeout on fourth and 1 from their own 17 before punting down 10 8:32 left in the game.

Here's options in order of intelligence
1) go for it (never will happen b/c of media wrath if it fails)
2) anything other than calling timeout because the 5 yards is meaningless.

Denarious Moore is a 5th round pick of the raiders who in preseason everybody thought was the best WR on the raiders and basically proved it sunday.  Can't wait till he gets benched when the 3 guys come back from injury again.  (then again Victor Cruz was everyone's darling last year and he still hasn't caught a NFL pass--should've been on the raiders)

Coaching will be fired list
Todd Haley (yeah pretty damn unlucky but at best they can go 4-12 looking at their schedule NFC North, AFC East and all 1st place teams so realistically only have a shot vs dolphins, vikings, colts, and maybe the broncos at home)

Jack Del Rio (Luke McCown is worse than I thought--and I thought he was terrible!)
Tony Sparano (wanted to fire him last season and he's done nothing but try to get himself fired this season)

Seriously, this guy should be fired but maybe not?
Spagnolo  (as wiff knows Josh McDaniels just means you're gonna get fired)
Harbaugh
Jim Caldwell
Norv Turner (for the 1000x year)

GM's that should be fired
Whoever the guy on the Dolphins is Waiving Benny Sapp after the 99 yard TD where the was obviously no safety help and the guy behind him on the roster is a long time special teamer who really shouldn't have been trying to cover Andre Johnson.  Seriously wtf?  Why am I betting on a team this stupid to cover the spread?  (lucky for me it was just in the-elite pool)

I'm still totally stunned on the rams decision to punt.  Lucky for spagnolo--I'm not his boss b/c he wouldn't have a job today.  That might be the worst coaching decision I've seen in a long time.  Can't remember ever seeing a coach give up in that obvious of a situation with that little time left.

Oh man, I'm not sure what else I can add to wheat's post that will be relevant and interesting, but I guess I'll stick to what I know:

1. The Packers defense is really not that bad, I honestly believe Dom Capers is just experimenting with a bunch of different lineups and schemes to use in the future. This week was more of an experimentation with Tramon Williams on the sidelines. Nick Collins being out forever is not the end of the world, we now have 2 young safeties back there who love to hit hard and are very fast players in general... I'm optimistic. Last year we lost Nick Barnett at Linebacker and the new guy proved to work better with AJ Hawk than Barnett ever did, so I'm hoping Charlie Peprah works awesome outside of Morgan Burnett.

2. Cam Newton is a good passer, but very overrated. He's thrown 800+ yards but also has a shit ton of turnovers. Why did Steve Smith throw the ball back in bounds? One of the oddest fumbles I've ever seen by a great player.

3. Donald Driver is now the Packers all time leading wide receiver in total yardage (huge record, because Don Hutson has owned everything for decades), pretty sweet for a 7th round pick in a team with as much history as the Packers.

4. Detroit looks scary, and everyone's claim of them making the playoffs is starting to look legit. Packers play them on Thanksgiving and I'm starting to fear that game...

5. It was good to see Philly get beat by Vick's old team. I hate both teams but Philly is overrated, sorry Youse!

6. Steve Spagnuolo's decision to punt can be justified, but any one of us can bash him for "giving up".

7. The Chiefs are the worst team in the NFL, behind the Colts. Losing Charles and Barry is far too much for a team that fluked last year anyway. Wheat's 4-12 projection is a bit generous, more like 2-14.

8. LOL VIKINGS, FUUUUUUU

for the record, I didn't project the Chiefs to go 4-12  I projected that they only have 4 winnable games left on the schedule.

Jimbo just tried to troll me by saying there's an actual justification for that rams punt but I'm not buying it!

Bears play Lions in week 4 on MNF with a banged up O line between that and the packer game we'll be fortunate if Cutler isn't dead.  (and yet it'll still feel like we should go 10-6 thanks to the entire (all 5 teams from the old AFC West consecutively) lol AFC west.

Official Week 5 lines are LOCKED, time to get your new set of picks in!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvhZ2lt476FmdENPaFpIdmpjNHN2a1FISTEwNXZfcUE&hl=en_US

Here's where the schedule gets tough- 6 teams are on byes, so there aren't as many options for your 5 bets.

Regarding W4- Third had a chance for the perfect week, but the Bucs couldn't QUITE top the Colts by enough points, leaving him at 4-1 and tied with Matt, Shep, and wheat for the best of the week.

He did do enough to pull into the lead on the overall ranks though, with 14 total points.  (Just ahead of Youse and his 13.5.)

The Falcons were taking as many cheap shots as they could at Rodgers yesterday when the O-line was at it's most vulnerable (2nd quarter), reminding me of what New Orleans did to Favre in the NFCCG. That game had disaster written all over it, but then Matty Lice came to play and promptly had an 18.8 QB rating after the first 2 drives against our defense. 16-0 will not happen, I would never think that, but the 2 toughest games of the year are out of the way with only @ Lions and @ San Diego posing very difficult challenges until the end of the season.

Here's to only the 6th 5-0 start in GB history, and about halfway to a division title and Rodgers' first home playoff game. His season-QB rating still stands at 124.0 and career stands at 100.9, best in NFL history.

Anyway, onto other NFL thought:

- Al Davis, to me, was never the old monster who held on too long, but rather a guy who helped changed the fundamentals of the game with his rebel lifestyle and football ways. He lived a full life of over 80 years and most NFL historians will appreciate his work as a whole, instead of the last 20 years (minus 2001/2002) of incompetence. RIP Davis, most important death since Wellington Mara.

- The Colts are proving that Jim Caldwell just may be the worst coach in the NFL. He had a few spoofs last year especially against the Jets in the playoffs, but this is ridiculous... Do they even take Andrew Luck if they get the #1 pick?

- Michael Vick is an overrated quarterback and it doesn't help that the rest of his team is so poorly coached. I'm not sure if it's Reid or his assistants but someone needs to crap the whip and re-teach these guys the fundamentals of basic football (lol Ronnie Brown attempting a pass as he's being tackled on the 5 yard line, fumbled)

- (unbiased, of course) The Packers are a unanimous #1 in the NFL power rankings from anyone and Rodgers is unanimous #1 QB. In today's NFL, and for the last 10 years, it's incredibly difficult to be a sole #1 team but our coaching staff and executive team has put together a squad that will be good for years, and I feel privileged to be a resident of the city and die hard fan. I have a tough time even discussing the team because anything I say will come off as bragging, when 5-0 speaks for itself. The Packers@Lions game on Thanksgiving can not come fast enough. The Packers host the Rams next week in their throwback jerseys.

- The popular "pick 6 teams to miss the playoffs" bet was used by me at my work and 3 people took the bait for $20 each, with all 3 people picking the 49ers and the Bills. There's a solid chance I'm walking away with an extra $60 at the end of the regular season!

- Tebow clearly needs to start, if not for the good of the team, but for the good of their bank account. Give the fans what they want; because he has the talent, and the fans love him (for now).

- Note to Vikings: Run the football, win games. P easy formula with Peterson.

- Note to Cardinals: Trade up to Indy's #1 pick and draft Andrew Luck, you'll likely be much better off!

- Note to Atlanta's coaching staff, you play way too conservatively when you have a lead. I suppose it doesn't help that "Matty Ice" gets nervous and starts throwing errant passes when the pressure gets in his face.

- Part of me wants to see the Lions win this game tonight and go 5-0 as well, but my logic-based thought process clearly is cheering for Chicago for once. Time for GB to take sole possession as division leader.

- LOL JOSH FREEMAN. I kind of hate the Buccaneers and it was nice to see the 49ers almost drop a 50-burger on that fraud team.

Anyway, rant over.

Bears already in the running for the 6 seed only because of horrendous GM and coaching decisions.  :(  Can get it yet though just need to get to 10-6 (doable given rest of schedule) but I wouldn't mind a total tank job so everybody gets fired.  Most likely they'll end up 8-8 and do nothing AGAIN :(  Only really afraid of the NFC East luckboxing a tiebreaker under the 10-6 scenario.

I'd just cut Roy Williams (didn't even know he was in the game till his one 4th Q catch), Omiayle (wouldn't have let him get on the bus THREE YEARS AGO), Meriweather right now and we'd instantly improve the team at least a little bit.  Knox is still terrible and I still hate him and we probably missed the window to trade him.  Hester sucked at returns but I'm ok with the end of game bad ones since we needed to try to steal a TD there but did fine aside from the drop at WR for a change.  Cutler/Forte were great and we still lost which is pathetic. Can't wait for SNF's 10 false starts and giving up 200 yards to peterson next week.

You can almost count the $60 already jim, SF only has to worry about a choke and having Seattle pass them.  I think the Bills at least get a WC spot (they beat the Jets every year before wouldn't stop now) anyway.  I thought the Ravens would fall off and the Browns would take that spot but it's turning into the Bills taking the Jets spot instead.

Colts clearly take Luck, they would've gone 8-8 at best this season, that team was falling apart even with Manning.  With the new rookie salary cap draft picks are tougher in terms of trading b/c they're worth more now.  I guess someone could go crazy though.  (also Russell Wilson might be a better QB which I'm surprised you didn't mention...)

and fucking Bears.

Al Davis--it's amazing every time some fucking asshole dies and everyone is nice about it.   I don't see any reason to not be honest everyone knows ffs.  Not only can you be a giant asshole but when you die everyone's gonna pretend your legacy was amazing and awesome and you weren't that bad when you kinda were (sure could've been a good guy behind the scenes but in front was a dick!  I mean were Raider fans deep down really sad about it?  Probably not.

Alright, guess since I won survival football (is this the earliest it's ever ended?) I should post in here each week who I'm picking and why.

Here's the teams already used: ARI, NYJ, SD, GB, NO

Games which are obv non-picks this week:

STL/GB
NO/TB
NYJ/MIA

...because I've used the good side of those already

CAR/ATL
SF/DET
BUF/NYG
PHI/WAS
HOU/BAL
DAL/NE

...because the teams are either inconsistent (ATL) or they're divisional games or have a good chance of being pretty close

Games to consider:

PIT over JAX - PIT has been pretty inconsistent though.

CHI over MIN - Divisional game, Bears O-Line sucks, short week.

That leaves 2 teams to pick between:

OAK over CLE - Home game, on a nice roll after pulling the upset last week, playing a pretty bad Browns team.

OR

CIN over IND - Home game, Colts are terrible, Bengals showing some promise and a very good D against a very bad Colts O.

...and the decision is made easier by looking at the schedules.  OAK plays KC, DEN, @MIN, @MIA, and @KC.  Only other game I'd be comfortable with CIN is @STL in week 15, so the LOCK OF THE WEEK IS THE CINCINNATI BENGALS!

London's getting 2 games a year soon.   He could've picked the Jaguars and just waited about 8 years or so.  Missing third's inexcusable.  Surprised we don't have more Ohio football fans but I guess if I was a brown/bengal fan I'm not sure I'd ever bring it up/admit it either.

Oh yeah, Week 6 lines are set and open for SuperContesting!

Picks, picks, make those picks!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AvhZ2lt476FmdENPaFpIdmpjNHN2a1FISTEwNXZfcUE&hl=en_US

So with roughly 1/3 of the regular season in the books, let's check how things are playing out so far.

* Congrats to Come for winning Elite Survival 2011!  Shep, Thingy, and Nate were still alive into W5, but they were all eliminated by picking the Giants, leaving Come as our sole survivor.  I believe this is the earliest anyone's ever won Survival.  Come has promised to continue announcing his picks/thought process in this topic every week from now until he's eliminated.

* Third was on top of the world a week ago, but he got his face stomped in during W5 of the SuperContest (going 1-4).  That has allowed Youse to reclaim the top position with 17.5 points.  Come is just back at 16.5.

* Moto's destruction of Pick'Em continues- he won W5 with 10 correct picks (tying three others) to maintain his #1 position for the season.  With 57 correct picks, he's in the 99.6 percentile nationwide.  Woll's in second with 55, followed by Ngamer and one of his cousins at 54.  Third continues to bring up the rear.
