Yeah i enjoy watching people stream runs, its cool to see how consistent a player is and stuff and its just fun and gives you something to do when your bored.  I think it would be really cool if more people start doing this especially if they could stream with good quality.

Come to VA one year.  Dave Clemens is consistent.  It's unreal watching him.  <_<

Or if a player like Clemens was actually streaming, you wouldn't have to travel to VA (which only happens 1 week out of the year anyway) to watch that person play live.  :nesquik:

To add to what others have already said, streaming is much more interactive than watching videos after the fact. It provides the opportunity to compete with others not just in single mission runs, but in real time races (if people would actually warm up to this concept). It's this kind of competition that other speed running communities like SpeedRunsLive and SDA are beginning to adopt. It caters to players of all skill levels, not just top players. That, and streaming allows you to broadcast to a much larger gaming community (i.e. all of twitch) that could potentially attract new members to the-elite.

buys something new b/c all the rest of the ones I've tried before won't work

video doesn't appear to lag (on xsplit only oddly enough)

sound doesn't appear to work

@$#@$@%@%@%@

edit--just did a test stream and the video lags on the stream but not my computer so I'm pretty sure my internet is incapable of streaming videos online without it jumping or lagging in the process.

not necessarily true Wheat. Make sure you stream through the right Xsplit server. Especially in the US that could give a lot of troubles with framedrops etc. Google it a bit, or mess around with the settings. Changing to the right server location could be a huge difference.

dont give up so quickly  :nesquik:

I have the necessary equipment to stream. Is anyone interested in viewing a stream? Or can we put something at the top of the boards saying 'NOW STREAMING'?, or can I get the privelidges in order to update a status on the.elite or the boards saying I'm streaming?

Karl, I'll PM you the stream key for the-elite twitch channel. Also, if you have your own twitch account, tell me your username so I can make you an editor for the channel. This will allow you to access the channel dashboard to update titles and such.

As for the board top, it's possible to embed the stream (someone with access would have to do it), but a message that appears when the channel is live is probably a bit more tricky and I don't know how to do that.

Oh yeah, embedding the vid at the top would be sweet :) we could move the summer contest pics to one side and have the embedded stream on the other side?

Was able to stream some on the channel, but it was a big lagfest. Gonna try and figure out the right video encoding setting later. But the problem might be something else.

Mine was laggy as well. Here is how I fixed it, assuming you're using xsplit. Bandwidtch test: My bandwidth was 280kbps. Changed bitrate of video to 250kbps, strema now running smoothly. You probs need to do the same.

Another example, bandwidth = 500kbps, change bitrate to like 450kbps....

Just streamed with 1300kbps bitrate and the video was really good. I muted the sound though because i had problems with it. Will try and fix that later. Streaming somewhere around 1000kbps with sound on should be good enough.

HELLO EVERYONE!

I need some help.  I want to set up a good stream to play Goldeneye, Mario Golf and maybe some other games.  My goal is to one day have a very successful stream with several hundreds, if not thousands of viewers like Sig and Cosmo do.  I obviously have the gaming aptitude and a personality that would translate very well to live streaming.  I still think that Goldeneye is super underplayed on twitch.tv because it was just as popular as Zelda or Mario, and I don't see why streaming Goldeneye can't be as popular.

DK was kind enough to send me his old capture device (thanks again DK! :lobster) and I've been able to install it and load up Adobe Flash Media Encoder to play with my computer as the output.  This works somewhat, but obviously I would prefer to play on my television.  Hence, my first problem... I AM LACKING AN AUDIO/VIDEO CABLE SPLITTER!

I went to the local mall which is a hotspot for electronics and spoke with many new-Canadians who are electronics experts.  They all understood what I was looking for, but didn't have an audio/video cable splitter, nor did many think it even exists.  I've looked around amazon.ca and can't really find them either.  There are a few ways to solve this;

a) someone finds what I can't find and links me to an audio/video cable splitter on amazon.ca which I will buy and move on in trying to start up my stream

b) I was advised to run the whole setup through several loops.  It would have to go N64 to DVD recorder to TV to computer.  The TV I am currently using is an old $40 14" CRT and does not have an output.  My DVD recorder only has one output.  Any advice on possibly setting this up would be appreciated.

I don't really have a clue yet how to get things going on twitch.tv, and ultimately I'd like to set up a stream with the video game, time splits and a webcam of me physically playing... (and maybe more advanced stuff like screen in screen racing your WR runs, etc.)  But I will take this one step at a time.

Any advice on my current problem would be very much appreciated!!!!

Just get a splitter off ebay. Put n64 into splitter, then splitter outputs to capture card, dvd recorder and tv.

youll need THIS

you should be able to get this at many places, goose. Where the heck have you been looking :P You need at least 2 of these (one for video, one for at least mono audio like I use)

also, Xsplit to broadcast. I could help you set it up, its fairly easy and gives you a lot of stuff to tweak and enhance. I dont know what kind of capture card you have right now but I guess it has tulip input (like the ones on the picture)?

honestly axel, that splitter is ridic by all accounts. Just get two of the ones I posted above and you're DONE. youll also need 2 extra cables like THIS:

first one to extend to tellie
second one to extend to your capture card input

ask more if its still not clear

The downside to unpowered splitters is that you might get some distortion in the video quality (audio should be fine, though). The upside is that they are dirt cheap. You can buy the one Cara posted for about $1 each on amazon.

However, if you don't mind putting up a few extra bucks, you can get a powered splitter to ensure that you will get zero loss in video quality. This is the model I have and it's relatively cheap: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1-IN-4-OUT-4-Port-RCA-Audio-Video-Distribution-Amplifier-Splitter-TV-DVD-LCD-V2-/160878113666?pt=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item2575153382

And of course, whichever you decide to go with, you'll need male-to-male composite cables for each output you have.

The input side has to be female to comply with the N64 cable though. Compare with the thing DavidK5 posted, which is all female.

fair enough, but its not like a N64 has much video quality to offer in the first place :P
I guess my stream quality has always been pretty good and I use this method of splitting cables as well.

I can stream on the-elite channel now http://sv.twitch.tv/theelitegaming

I started out yesterday a little for those who didn't notice and PRd on Silo 00a with 1:29.

I'm thinking of playing some today also, possibly Depot SA, maybe few more runs on Silo 00a also and maybe something else. I will be jumping on the stream from time to time, I usually don't wanna play too late on the evenings though.
Around 10-11pm (swedish time) I usually quit, I might stream some mornings also and a little during the day, If I play something else than GE or PD (mario64, waverace64, mariokart64, mickeyspeedwayUSA) I might go with my own channel.

I'm up for GE/PD races too (head to head single segment), I dont' know how to set up these but I guess someone knows. Would be fun to try racing someday against one or few opponents if we can come up with a time that suits everyone. I might be able to make an exception to my scedule for these and play at night if that's the only way for some people.

Okay I want to do a test to get the stream going.  Obvy I will hope to eventually add on stuff like a mic, webcam, etc, but for now I just want to get the stream to twitch.tv

This is what my Adobe Flash Media Live Encoder looks like

http://i.imgur.com/zuoXq.jpg

I'm also getting the picture to come in the "output" region so I'm sure that's good.  I dunno why it's a black screen in that screen cap.  I must have been between frames.

I HAVE LITERALLY NO IDEA WHAT TO DO NOW!  someone please help and hold my hand through this process.

***WHAT DO I PUT FOR MY FMS URL????***  I THINK I HAVE EVERYTHING ELSE OK

OK I think I have the FMS URL but now I don't know how to connect this all to my channel

I don't have sound yet but I'll sort that out eventually.

I guess you have it set up already, but if you want to add features to your stream later on you should do what Cara said and use Xsplit instead of FME (even the free version is ok since N64 games rarely run over 25fps). Xsplit is far more user-friendly and lets you easily add media, webcams, etc which I imagine would be very difficult and cumbersome in FME.

Okay yeah.  I figured 25fps would be a problem so that's why I originally went with FMLE.  But today I was going 15fps on FMLE and it looked as good as it needs to look for an acceptable stream.  I will try out Xsplit later and maybe that will make the audio easier to set up (which I still haven't got with FMLE.)

Thanks DK you have been very helpful to me this whole time.  I really appreciate it :)

xsplit has very poor audio unless you crack it, then it unlocks a really nice audio codec

Okay I installed Xsplit.  I still can't get audio.  I don't really care right now if the audio is bad.  That will come later.  But I want audio and can't figure out how to get it.  HELP PLZ! :(

Hmm there is a known problem with Windows XP and audio

I just don't know what to select as my mic.  Is it the same as the capture device?

You have the same problem I have and I have never solved it. My audio works just fine with the software that came with Dazzle, but refuses to work with xSplit so I just use my microphone to do live commentary/TV sound for when I stream, it's not that big of a deal imo.

I've actually never got my audio to work even with the software that came with the capture card DK sent me.

You'd be able to hear background noises from the game once I introduce a webcam I guess, but I definitely want to solve this.

I thought the issue Jimbo had was specific to the Dazzle DVC100, but it's odd that the sound isn't working on that Plextor because it always worked for me when I used it. I seem to remember the sound going through ok when I tested it before sending it to you, though, so I'm not sure what the problem could be.

What Xsplit does is integrate audio from one microphone with whatever is playing through your computer's speakers. So you can either do what Jimbo does and use a condenser mic to pick up game audio (it works surprisingly well in his setup) or you need to find a way to play the game audio through your comp's speakers. You may want to double check playback and recording devices in your computer's sound options to see if the Plextor shows up there. If not you can try installing Virtual Audio Cable to see if it will recognize it. If you can't get VAC to work, then another option is to get a cable that can take the RCA audio and play it through your comp's microphone jack (something like a RCA female to 3.5mm male cable)

It's likely something to do with the installation.  I might try reinstalling or double checking that the software is in properly.  Like I say, I've never heard sound coming in on either FMLE or Xsplit.

that indicates my computer recognizes the capture card right?

I'll try VAC.  I still haven't tested simple things like talking into a mic or my webcam on Xsplit or FMLE so I still have some troubleshooting to do.  Your post gives a lot of good insight DK.  And I like that cable adapter option (if such a thing even exists :p)

Lol I have no idea what I'm doing with VAC right now...

----------------------------

OKAY SO

I hadn't uninstalled anything or changed anything.  But I captured directly into Windows Movie Maker.  When I was capturing, I could not hear the sound.  But once the video imported, it had sound in it.  This is definitely a good sign that the sound is getting to the computer.  I just need to keep fooling around with all the settings I'm sure...

Tried broadcasting again.  Nothing.  I'm completely lost :(

When I fooled around with this stuff, whether or not real-time sound could be heard was also depending on the software used. The capture program, like you said, also didn't play sound but put it in the recorded video. VideoLAN player (was like: media -> open capture device) worked like a charm (but cannot record ofc), so that's convenient for testing.

First I would try selecting the capture device as your recording device (from the screenshot you posted) and then just run Sound Recorder to see if it records the game audio. If it does, then you should be able to get sound by enabling microphone playback in your comp's volume control mixer. I don't have Windows XP in front of me atm so I don't know the exact procedure, but I think you should be able to go into volume control options > preferences (or something like that) and unmute your microphone in the sound mixer to have it play through your speakers.

I try selecting my webcam as my recording device - it records

I try selecting the capture device as my recording device - NOTHING

So obviously that means the problem is in the capture device, installation, etc.  I will try uninstalling and reinstalling.

Weirdly, I just tried Xsplit with both the webcam and capture on, and even with webcam selected as recording device I still got no sound input... didn't try messing around too much but that's annoying.

Okay now this is troll

I uninstalled, reinstalled, didn't do anything.

There is an AUX port on the capture device.  So I plug my headphones in there, and boom, I can hear the sound from GE.

Then I took an AUX cable from the capture device into the mic input, and I can record GE sounds from there with Sound Recorder.

So now we know the problem is somewhere between the capture device and Xsplit.

Since my webcam wasn't making sounds either, the problem must be in Xsplit... sighhhhhhhhhhhh \

And now I've selected my mic input (Realtek HD audio) in Xsplit and STILL NOTHING WTF

Okay now unplug the aux cable involved.  So I'm only using the USB from capture device to computer.  I open VLC player, select "open capture device."  Select the capture device as both audio and video.  And now I get AUDIO but NO VIDEO.

Lollllllllllllllllllllll I am getting trolled all round.

But I guess this means that some programs can accept the capture device as an audio device and it will work.

OKAY now Sound Recorder somehow will record the GE sounds from the capture device after I selected it as the default recording device in Control Panel.

Okay it's totally working if I use the webcam as audio now
