a condensed version of my altstrumming accuracy guide.
If a measure is full of altstrumming, it is eighth, triplets, sixteenth etc notes. That means 4, 6, or 8 notes per measure. It will *always* be an even number. You want to always start a passage on a downstrum (as basically all passages start ON the beat of the song). That means that after 4, 6 or 8 notes, you will end on an UP. Now, usually, there is one extra note or chord in the next measure. That means that will be a final DOWN.
So if | is a measure line, here is an example of triplets (the fast stuff in one, or the faster greens in 3s and 7s).
1 1 1 1 1 1 | (chord)
So start on a down, and hit the chord on a down.
Concentrate on two things: an even strumming speed (so you dont go 4 fast and 2 slow or something to "catch up"), and end the chord on a down. You *wont* mess up, I promise, even if you can't count the notes (exception: TTFAF). if you mess up, that means you are going DRASTICALLY too fast or slow.
Specific examples:
"one" pre-solo.
1 1 1 1 1 1 | (chord) | 1 1 1 (chord) | 1 1 1 1 1 1 | (chord ) | etc.
Now its 6 chord, 3 chord, 6 chord, etc. So what you do is hit the main chords on DOWNS, and the alternate chords (they dont contain a green... its obvious) on UPS. The most common mistake is to overstrum by trying to catch up and hit that early chord on a downbeat.
passages that are too long to count (TTFAF, cherub rock, helicopter, etc)
TTFAF:
The basic passages with (chord) 1 1 1 | 1 1 1 1 | 1 1 1 1 | 1 1 1 1 | (chord)
You hit the chord and start going nuts. You end these on downs, but its easy to go too fast or slow. So instead of watching the notes, watch the meter lines! You should be on a down at each meter line. Its hard to know what you're on when, but do it in your head like a CHUG a chug a CHUG a chug a CHUG a chug a CHUG a chug a DONE.
Sometimes, you'll get something like
11111111444444444444, and you don't know where to pass over. Go look at a notechart and see if the 4s begin on an up or a down. Just count it off. This is the helicopter problem I believe, as the transitions are sometimes on an upbeat!
