Im Ngamer (3:36:38 AM): 360 version - 191k
Im Ngamer (3:36:45 AM): Wii version - 183k
Im Ngamer (3:36:51 AM): PS3 - 97k
Im Ngamer (3:36:59 AM): PS2 - 63k
Im Ngamer (3:37:09 AM): for a total of 535k sold so far

Hot update!

With all the numbers from January through October in, it's time to take a look at how 2008 sales are looking heading into the final two holiday months.  If the year would have ended on 11/1/08, here's how the Top Five Games would have looked

Top Five Games of 2008 (Jan-Oct)

1. Grand Theft Auto IV - 5.2 million
2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 3.5 million
3. Mario Kart Wii - 3.4 million
4. Wii Play - 3.0 million
5. Wii Fit - 2.8 million

Note that GTA4 is from 3.2 mil on the 360 and 1.8 mil on the PS3; if limited to one console per game, Brawl would be your top seller of '08 (although obviously Kart is going to catch and pass it this month).

Here's how the consoles look in terms of total games sold this year, compared to '07.

Major improvement for the PS3 though its still far behind.  360 maintains a slow steady growth, and Wii sales are through the roof.

On a different note, here's a graph showing how the first week of GH:WT sales compared against GH3's hot start.

[20:52] RedBullPD: Woo
[20:52] Thiradell: Woohoo.
[20:53] NgamerAtWork: this is the first time in history a console has sold over 2 million in any month aside from December
[20:53] Thiradell: Gracious.
[20:53] NgamerAtWork: the PS2 never had a non-Christmas over 1.5 million
[20:53] NgamerAtWork: looks like the only thing holding the Wii back the last two years really has been a lack of supply!
[20:54] NgamerAtWork: and that concludes the NPD update for Nov 07. I hope everyone enjoyed it!

Oh my, there have been some interesting developments! Here's a big

UPDATE

* that Guitar Hero WT number from the Top Ten was for the Wii version only. if you combine all 4 systems it put up 978k, good for the third biggest game of the month
* all versions/systems of RB2 combined came to just about 500k in November, aka 7th best. that means the updated Lifetime War sits at

Rock Band 2 - 1.10 million
GH World Tour - 1.51 million

* the new WoW expansion, Wrath of the Lich King, put up a little over 1.4 million in sales if you combine in-store with people who just dled it online. so, it would have been 3rd biggest, but NPD doesn't track PC games alongside consoles
* Fable II did only 184k in Nov- kind of disappointing, but that takes it to 974k lifetime which isn't so bad
* the average 360 owner also owns 8.1 games, which is the best for North America
* there are now 14 million Live subscribers worldwide
* LittleBigPlanet - 141k
* Valkyria Chronicles - 33k
* Animal Crossing: CF - ~250k
* Fallout 3 (360) - ~250k
* Mario Kart DS - ~200k (still!)

---

Next up I have some cool graphs, but don't have them on me at the moment.

EDIT - Okay, here are those images I promised.  The first shows how the 360 + PS3 combined are doing against the Wii in terms of lifetime sales worldwide.

And this one tracks how the PS3 console is doing head to head against Wii Fit, aka the Wii Balance Board (these are US-only numbers).

Heading into dangerous territory!

QUICK HITTER THOUGHTS

* what the crap at Assassin's Creed.  I mean, I realized it had done well, but those are GTA-type numbers which I didn't think would have been possible for a new IP to pull.  what really confuses me is how it did all that business despite pretty much every review being "this is an incredible game for the first couple hours, but then you play those hours over and over again for the next 18".  it wasn't even a GTA4 kind of thing where everyone was hyped for a month and then realized it wasn't so great later on; people were calling AC super-repetitive right from the start, and I don't understand how you do 3 mil+ on a new IP without really solid word of mouth.  ANYWAYS, at least now we can see why Altair wasn't a total chump

* shame that we don't get to see any numbers for the PC, as I'm sure Bioshock and Dead Space and especially Left 4 Dead would get a nice boost if we did

* speaking of which, holy smokes @ 1.28 for L4D!  great to see a quality product like that finally catch on outside of the Steam community (though I guess the Orange Box's good run had already shown us it was possible)

* neat to see that the RB franchise has officially left GH in the dust when it comes to the 360 fanbase- hopefully the other two will catch on next time around as well.  the low low sales for the Wii's RB2 confuse me though... is that just a lack of supply issue?  I'm assuming it must be considering how Wii GHWT bundles are still going like hotcakes yet RB2 is only up to 1/3 of RB1's base there

* essentially doubling the combined 360/PS3 sales... yeah HM hits the nail on the head, it's easy to see why Sonic is more and more being considered Nintendo

* am I the only one surprised to see Mortal Kombat vs DC doing so well?  over 1.1 million already- those are SF4 kind of numbers, yet I've seen a ton of Street Fighter commercials and conversations and have barely heard a peep about MK/DC all year, so I'd just assumed it had tanked both review wise and sales wise.  I guess not! (well to the later at least)

* only 150k for the new Banjo, not even 100k for the new Viva?  oh wow, where are all those doomsayers from when Nintendo allowed Rare to get away now?  granted Nintendo still has alot of problems, but not having Rare around to push out sales like THAT isn't one of them

* bah, was hoping for a better number out of No More Heroes considering how it dropped to $20 a couple months back.  I wonder if MadWorld will be able to top that... got to think it'll have a chance, considering how it was at least advertised

* wow, I thought for sure the gap between the beginning-of-life-must-have-flagship-title-great-reviewed-strong-legs-aged-well FFX and the end-of-life-mixed-reviewed-one-of-100-RPG-options FFXII would be much much larger.  I'm torn over if that leaves me impressed with 12 or just disappointed in 10...

I'm pretty surprised that Rock Band is more popular on PS3 than X360. Keep up this interesting work Jon!

Im Ngamer (1:54:35 AM): we don't have reliable monthly numbers back to the N64/PSX era
Im Ngamer (1:55:07 AM): but since you're so interested, here are some lifetime worldwide numbers that DO go back that far!
Im Ngamer (1:55:40 AM): the DS is now up to 101.8 million worldwide- next month it will pass the PSX to become the #3 most popular system ever
Im Ngamer (1:56:07 AM): #1 is the PS2 at 137.7 million, 2 is the original Gameboy at 118.7 million
Im Ngamer (1:56:52 AM): the Wii currently stands at 50.39 million; it will shortly be passing the NES to become the most popular Nintendo console ever
Im Ngamer (1:57:13 AM): it has already passed the SNES (49.1 million)
Im Ngamer (1:57:25 AM): and N64 (32.9 million)
GoldenJimbo007 (1:57:12 AM): Wow I really over estimated the N64
Im Ngamer (1:58:07 AM): the 360 is now up to 27.9 million, so it will be passing the Genesis (29.9) and N64 before too long
Im Ngamer (1:58:25 AM): and it's already more popular than the original Xbox, which sold 24.8
Im Ngamer (1:59:08 AM): the PS3 (22.9) meanwhile has to content itself with beating the GC (21.7)
Im Ngamer (1:59:29 AM): but it will at least catch the first Xbox eventually
Im Ngamer (2:00:13 AM): and that covers the last two months!  I'm glad everyone got such a kick out of that!

[18:50] NgamerAtWork:
alright, well I'd been hoping to catch QB, but I guess Shep will have to fill in

[18:50] Infil12: pwned
[18:50] DKK5: lol
[18:50] NgamerAtWork: no actually, he filled in for QB perfectly

[18:53] NgamerAtWork: in North America though Microsoft is still well ahead
[18:53] NgamerAtWork: speaking of which, let's look at those NA Software Sales!
[18:53] NgamerAtWork: 1. UFC Undisputed - 1.01 million
[18:53] NgamerAtWork: that's 680k on the 360 and 334k on the PS3

[18:55] NgamerAtWork: 9. Wii Play - 110k
[18:55] NgamerAtWork: 10. New Super Mario Bros
[18:55] NgamerAtWork: now for those Durk-enthralling Console Wars!

[18:56] NgamerAtWork: 2. 360 - 14.84 million
[18:56] NgamerAtWork: 3. PS3 - 7.46 million
[18:56] NgamerAtWork: Handhelds:
[18:56] NgamerAtWork: 1. DS - 30.26 million
[18:56] NgamerAtWork: 2. PSP - 14.88 million
[18:57] NgamerAtWork: overall in '09 the DS has sold 2.76 to the Wii's 2.05
[18:57] NgamerAtWork: now normally I'd finish up here, but since there seems to be extra interest tonight, let's also cover those
[18:57] NgamerAtWork: Worldwide Totals!
[18:58] NgamerAtWork: 1. Wii - 50.39 million
[18:58] NgamerAtWork: 2. 360 - 27.91 million
[18:58] NgamerAtWork: 3. PS3 - 22.91 million
[18:58] NgamerAtWork: 1. DS - 101.78 million
[18:58] NgamerAtWork: 2. PSP - 51.70 million
[18:59] NgamerAtWork: in other news, the race to be the #3 system in North America continues to tighten up!
[18:59] NgamerAtWork: as we just covered the PS3 is at 7.46 million right now
[18:59] NgamerAtWork: but with its continued strong sales, the Wii Balance Board is now at... 7.31 mil!
[19:00] NgamerAtWork: should be able to surpass it later this month
[19:00] PYLemire: wtf is a Wii balance
[19:00] NgamerAtWork: it's what you play Wii Fit on
[19:00] NgamerAtWork: but there are also games now that just use that board
[19:00] NgamerAtWork: like to skateboard or snowboard on
[19:00] CarathornPD: din mor balanced on my cock last night?
[19:01] NgamerAtWork: to round us out, here are the games that finished 11-17 last month
[19:01] NgamerAtWork: MK DS, Call of Duty 4, Gardening Mama, Sacred 2, Rhythm Heaven, Halo 3, and Gold's Gym Cardio Workout
[19:01] PYLemire: so the wii balance isn't really a system it's an accessory?

[19:02] NgamerAtWork: well it's technically an "accessory", but no accessory in the past has ever had an install base like this
[19:02] NgamerAtWork: I mean it's going to easily finish with over 10 million owning it
[19:03] NgamerAtWork: so people can develop games specifically for it now, and many are
[19:03] PYLemire: so Wii is at close to 20M and about 1/3rd of people own a Wii Balance Board?
[19:04] NgamerAtWork: yes, about 1/3 of NA Wii owners also have the board
[19:04] PYLemire: pretty good pretty good
[19:05] NgamerAtWork: DARN good I would say, considering Nintendo gets $90 every time they sell one

[19:06] NgamerAtWork: that concludes this month's update; I hope everyone enjoyed themselves fully!

October 2009 NPD Sales

[20:36] Ngameratwork:
alright, me and Neo have that sorted, and the SF talk is way way over
[20:36] Ngameratwork: and the gang's all here, so let's celebrate
[20:36] Infil12: dang it
[20:36] Infil12: you're going to interrupt my SF conversation with...

[20:36] Ngameratwork: the NPD numbers for October 2009!
[20:36] Ngameratwork: as you'll no doubt recall, September was a crazy month
[20:36] Ngameratwork: the big price cut lead to the PS3 not only beating the 360, but the Wii as well!
[20:36] Ngameratwork: for the first time ever
[20:37] Ngameratwork: October was expected to be a return to normal, especially with the Wii going with it's own 50 dollar price cut
[20:37] Ngameratwork: let's see how that panned out
[20:37] Ngameratwork: starting with those Hardware Numbers!
[20:37] Ngameratwork: 1. Wii - 507k
[20:37] Ngameratwork: 2. DS - 458k

[20:38] Ngameratwork: 5. PSP - 175k
[20:38] Ngameratwork: 6. PS2 - 118k

[20:40] Ngameratwork: 5. Wii Sports Resort - 319k
[20:40] Ngameratwork: 6. Halo 3: ODST - 271k
[20:40] Ngameratwork: 7. Brutal Legend - 216k
[20:40] Ngameratwork: 150k 360, 66k PS3
[20:40] Ngameratwork: 8. Forza Motorsport 3 (360) - 175k
[20:41] Ngameratwork: 9. Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (DS) - 169k
[20:41] Ngameratwork: 10. FIFA Soccer '10 - 156k
[20:41] Ngameratwork: 11. Demon's Souls - 153k
[20:41] Ngameratwork: 12. Mario and Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
[20:41] Ngameratwork: 13. WWE Smackdown vs RAW 2010
[20:42] Ngameratwork: 14. Tekken 6
[20:42] Ngameratwork: 15. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (DS)
[20:42] Ngameratwork: 16. Mario Kart Wii
[20:42] Ngameratwork: 17. DJ Hero - 123k

[20:43] Ngameratwork: pretty solid for Uncharted, but the big surprises there are the strong showings for Borderlands and Demon's Souls
[20:43] Ngameratwork: and also the major flop for DJ Hero, considering how hard it was pushed
[20:43] Ngameratwork: now for those updated Console Wars!
[20:43] Ngameratwork: 1. Wii - 21.68 mil
[20:43] Ngameratwork: 2. 360 - 16.10 mil
[20:43] Ngameratwork: 3. PS3 - 8.77 mil
[20:44] Ngameratwork: 1. DS - 33.10 mil
[20:44] Ngameratwork: 2. PSP - 15.67 mil
[20:45] Ngameratwork: yes you have a point there. I hope everyone enjoyed those October numbers
[20:45] Ngameratwork: because it's time to move on to the biggest month of the year- NOVEMBER!

November 2009 NPD Sales

[20:45] Ngameratwork: this was expected to be a huge month, with a ton of big releases
[20:46] Ngameratwork: to go along with the new price drops, expected to result in big time Christmas gift sales
[20:46] Ngameratwork: let's see how it panned out!
[20:46] Ngameratwork: Hardware Sales:
[20:46] Ngameratwork: 1. DS - 1.70 million
[20:46] Ngameratwork: 2. Wii - 1.26 million
[20:46] Ngameratwork: 3. 360 - 820k
[20:46] Ngameratwork: 4. PS3 - 710k
[20:46] Ngameratwork: 5. PSP - 294k
[20:47] Ngameratwork: 6. PS2 - 203k
[20:47] Ngameratwork: and now let's see some record setting Software Sales!

[20:47] Ngameratwork: 1. CoD: Modern Warfare 2 - 6.07 million
[20:47] Ngameratwork: 4.2 mil 360, 1.87 mil PS3
[20:47] Ngameratwork: 2. New Super Mario Bros - 1.39 mil
[20:48] Ngameratwork: 3. Assassin's Creed 2 - 1.24 million
[20:48] Ngameratwork: 795k 360, 448k PS3
[20:48] Ngameratwork: 4. Left 4 Dead 2 - 744k
[20:48] Ngameratwork: that is 360 only
[20:48] Ngameratwork: 5. Wii Sports Resort - 720k
[20:48] Ngameratwork: 6. Wii Fit Plus - 679k
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 7. Dragon Age: Origins - 551k
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 362k 360, 189k PS3
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 8. Mario Kart Wii - 315k
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 9. Wii Play
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 10. Mario and Sonic at the Winter Games
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 11. Wii Value Game Bundle
[20:49] Ngameratwork: 12. Mario and Luigi's Inside Bowser and Loving It

[20:50] Ngameratwork: 13. DS Value Game Bundle
[20:50] Ngameratwork: 14. God of War 1 and 2 Collection (PS3)
[20:50] Ngameratwork: 15. Halo 3: ODST
[20:50] Ngameratwork: 16. Borderlands (360)
[20:50] Ngameratwork: 17. Madden '10 (360)
[20:50] Ngameratwork: 18. Tony Hawk: Ride - 114k combined between all 3 consoles
[20:51] Ngameratwork: which makes Ride a slightly bigger flop than DJ Hero!
[20:51] Ngameratwork: the previous record for biggest month was Halo 3, which sold 3.3 million
[20:51] Ngameratwork: so as you see, CoD crushed it
[20:51] Ngameratwork: H3 sold that much in 12 days while CoD had 16, but even so it was going to win easily
[20:52] Ngameratwork: now to check those updated Console Wars!
[20:52] Ngameratwork: 1. Wii - 23.32 million
[20:52] Ngameratwork: 2. 360 - 17.31 million
[20:52] Ngameratwork: 3. PS3 - 9.76 million
[20:52] Ngameratwork: 1. DS - 35.39 million
[20:52] Ngameratwork: 2. PSP - 16.17 million
[20:53] Ngameratwork: at its current rate, the DS will surpass the PS2 to become the biggest selling system ever in either November or December of next year
[20:53] Ngameratwork: I'll have to look back at that one Infil
[20:54] Ngameratwork: so things looked great for Nintendo and good for Microsoft this month, BUT let's compare these numbers against November '08
[20:54] Ngameratwork: to see where the trends are heading
[20:54] Ngameratwork: * Wii sales were down 38.2%
[20:55] Ngameratwork: * DS sales were up 8.3%
[20:55] Ngameratwork: * 360 sales were down 1.9%
[20:55] Ngameratwork: * PS3 sales were up 87.8%
[20:55] Ngameratwork: * PSP sales were down 30.2%
[20:55] Ngameratwork: * PS2 sales were up 1.5%
[20:56] Ngameratwork: oh and CoD: World at War was released this same date last year and sold 1.86 million between 360 and PS3
[20:57] Ngameratwork: whoops I take that back!
[20:57] Ngameratwork: it did 2.01 mil
[20:58] Ngameratwork: alright, no, GTA4 did only 2.85 mil its opening month
[20:58] Ngameratwork: I think it did all those sales in only 4-5 days though, so it could have beaten Halo with better timing
[20:59] Ngameratwork: the only other openers in that range in the past two years are Brawl, at 2.7 mil
[20:59] Ngameratwork: and Guitar Hero 3, at 2.37 mil
[21:00] Ngameratwork: another interesting tidbit is that only big budget game this year has sold more on the PS3 than the 360
[21:01] Ngameratwork: and that's Batman
[21:01] Ngameratwork: I guess because PS3 owners get bonus Joker content for free or somesuch
[21:01] Ngameratwork: the only other big title that's close between the two is SF4
[21:02] Ngameratwork: probably because of the improved D-pad
[21:03] Ngameratwork: and that wraps up tonight's NPD coverage! I hoped you enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed the pleasure of Neo's company!

Ngameratwork (11:47:43 PM): 16. Just Dance (Wii)
Ngameratwork (11:47:55 PM): which you remember from the video review I posted last week!
Infil12 (11:48:02 PM): glad to see scribblenauts do well
Ngameratwork (11:48:20 PM): yes scribble was a big surprise, seeing as it only did 200k its opening month
Ngameratwork (11:48:38 PM): but it's had good word of mouth and seemed to be a big Christmas choice.  up to almost a million sold now!
Ngameratwork (11:48:57 PM): let's update those new Lifetime Console Wars!

Ngameratwork (11:50:14 PM): overall in 2009 the 360 outsold the PS3, but only by 41k

Ngameratwork (11:51:09 PM): 1. Call of Duty: MW2 - 8.82 million
Ngameratwork (11:51:21 PM): MW2 is now the 4th highest selling game of all time in North America

Ngameratwork (11:53:13 PM): Uncharted 2 - 950k
Ngameratwork (11:53:45 PM): in addition to all those sales for New Mario Wii, it's done just as good in Europe and Japan
Ngameratwork (11:53:57 PM): which is why it crossed the 10 million mark worldwide last week!
Ngameratwork (11:54:37 PM): Wii Fit is now up to 11.54 million worldwide
Infil12 (11:54:41 PM): sad to see uncharted 2 not even break a million
Infil12 (11:54:45 PM): was probably the best game i played all of last year
Ngameratwork (11:55:11 PM): also, DJ Hero has recovered since its bad launch, possible thanks to a price cut.  it is now at over 800,000 sold
Ngameratwork (11:55:46 PM): so thanks to Nintendo beating the former record for system sales TWICE in one month...
Ngameratwork (11:56:04 PM): December '09 was the best month ever for the video game industry!
Ngameratwork (11:56:17 PM): with total sales of 5.53 billion, up 4% over the former record
Ngameratwork (11:57:09 PM): the industry is also growing long term- through this point in their lifespans, this current generation of consoles are over 9 million ahead of where we stood last generation
HiddeNVillsgEoo7 (11:57:36 PM): 5.53billion sales?
HiddeNVillsgEoo7 (11:57:37 PM): bullshit
Ngameratwork (11:57:48 PM): nope Goose, afraid it's true
HiddeNVillsgEoo7 (11:57:49 PM): 5.53billion gaming products were sold
HiddeNVillsgEoo7 (11:57:55 PM): that DOES NOT MAKE SENSE
HiddeNVillsgEoo7 (11:58:00 PM): thats 1 for every person on earth
Ngameratwork (11:58:36 PM): as a bonus, there was some interesting data out of Japan
newershadow (11:58:54 PM): products goose
Ngameratwork (11:59:01 PM): including Final Fantasy 13 becoming the #5 best seller of the years
Ngameratwork (11:59:08 PM): despite only being out for 2 weeks!
Ngameratwork (12:02:39 AM): now let's compare against December '08 to see how things are trending
Ngameratwork (12:02:59 AM): Wii sales were up 77.2%
Ngameratwork (12:03:07 AM): DS sales were up 8.89%
Ngameratwork (12:03:18 AM): 360 sales were down 9.0%
Ngameratwork (12:03:29 AM): PS3 sales were up 87.3%
Ngameratwork (12:03:38 AM): PSP sales were down 35.9%

Ngameratwork (12:04:15 AM): and that wraps things up for this month!  I hope everyone had the time of their lives, as I did!

NPD Sales - March 2010

[21:16]  Ngameratwork: any  idea what happened to Infil?
[21:18]  CieloAzor: he had to take his leave
[21:18]  CieloAzor: but he did enjoy the riot
[21:19]  Ngameratwork: ah  well, at least we have two of the Big Three pieces of the puzzle.  in my opinion that's plenty enough of an excuse to launch into
[21:19]  Ngameratwork: The  NPD report for March 2010!
[21:19]  CieloAzor: uhoh
[21:19] Ngameratwork: this was a HUGE month for  the game industry.  just check out these releases!
[21:19]  neo26988: oh god I'm  out
[21:19]  Ngameratwork: Pokemon  HG/SS, FF 13, God of War 3, Perfect Dark, and the new Bad Company
[21:20]  Ngameratwork: but  how did things shake down?  let's take a look, starting with...
[21:20]  Ngameratwork: Hardware  Sales!
[21:20] Ngameratwork: 1. DS - 700,800
[21:20]  Ngameratwork: 2.  Wii - 557,500
[21:20] Ngameratwork: 3. 360 - 338,400
[21:20]  Ngameratwork: 4.  PS3 - 331,900
[21:20] Ngameratwork: 5. PSP - 119,900
[21:21]  Ngameratwork: 6.  PS2 - 118,300
[21:21] Ngameratwork: but what everyone had their eye on was those Software Sales!
[21:21]  Ngameratwork: and  the winner of this very competitive month was...
[21:21]  Ngameratwork: 1.  Pokemon Heart Gold/Soul Silver - 1.78 million
[21:21]  Ngameratwork: 2.  Final Fantasy 13 - 1.32 million
[21:22]  Ngameratwork: FF13  did 828k on the PS3 and 458k on the 360, making it the first multiplatform AAA title to ever win between the two
[21:22]  Ngameratwork: 3.  Battlefield: Bad Company 2 - 1.28 million
[21:22]  Ngameratwork: 826k  360 vs 451k PS3, pretty typical for a shooter
[21:22]  Ngameratwork: 4.  God of War 3 - 1.10 million
[21:23] Ngameratwork: 5. New Super Mario Bros Wii - 457,400
[21:23] Ngameratwork: 6. Wii Fit Plus - 429,600
[21:23] Ngameratwork: 7. MLB '10: The Show (PS3) - 349,200
[21:23] Ngameratwork: 8. Wii Sports Resort
[21:23]  Ngameratwork: 9.  Just Dance
[21:24] Ngameratwork: 10. Call of Duty: Modern  Warfare 2
[21:24] Ngameratwork: 11. New Super Mario Bros  DS
[21:24] Ngameratwork: 12. Mario Kart Wii
[21:24]  Ngameratwork: 13.  God of War Collection (PS3)
[21:24]  Ngameratwork: 14.  Heavy Rain (PS3)
[21:24] Ngameratwork: 15. Mario Kart DS

[21:25]  Ngameratwork: MKDS  sold about 110k, so the whole top 15 was well over 100k, which is really something
[21:25] Ngameratwork: fun  stats coming up, but first a quick update on those Console Wars!
[21:25]  Ngameratwork: 1.  Wii - 28.54 million
[21:26] Ngameratwork: 2.  360 - 19.72 million
[21:26] Ngameratwork: 3.  PS3 - 12.08 million
[21:26] Ngameratwork: 1.  DS - 40.45 million
[21:26] Ngameratwork: 2.  PSP - 17.18 million
[21:27] Ngameratwork: overall,  gaming resulted in $1.52 billion this month, making it the third best month for gaming EVER!
[21:27] Ngameratwork: (if  you don't include November and Decembers)
[21:27]  Ngameratwork: that's  up 6% from March last year
[21:28]  Ngameratwork: New  Super Mario for the Wii is up to 5.89 million lifetime in the US now
[21:28]  Ngameratwork: meanwhile  MW2 sold enough to become the #2 best selling game ever in the US market last month
[21:28] Ngameratwork: (not really "ever", but since the NPD started tracking in 1994)
[21:29]  Ngameratwork: other  lifetime numbers: God of War Collection is up to 650k and Heavy Rain is  up to 300k
[21:29] Ngameratwork: it was a very promising start for all the big franchises, really
[21:30]  Ngameratwork: FF13  became the fastest-selling FF game ever in America in its first week
[21:30]  Ngameratwork: GoW3  sales were up 32% from GoW2, which launched exactly 3 years ago this month
[21:30] CieloAzor: 3 years ago?
[21:30]  Ngameratwork: and  Battlefield 2 was up 170% vs Battlefield 1
[21:30]  CieloAzor: get out of town
[21:31] Ngameratwork: yup, it was March of '07
[21:31]  Ngameratwork: doesn't  feel that long ago to me either
[21:31] Ngameratwork: Kratos made his debut in the 2005 Summer Contest, so the series is getting up there in years these days
[21:32]  Ngameratwork: despite  not matching the 360 or Wii in console sales, it was still a promising month for Sony
[21:33] Ngameratwork: they  were the winner for overall software sales for the first time EVER in the PS3 era
[21:33] Ngameratwork: also this was the 8th straight month that they improved sales of the PS3
[21:34]  Ngameratwork: that's  everything for March, but since we missed the Feb update, here's some cool stats
[21:35] Ngameratwork: * Feb '10 was the first time the 360 outsold the Wii in 31 months (since Sept '07, when Halo 3 launched)
[21:35] Ngameratwork: however as March showed, that happened mainly because Wiis were still sold out from the holiday splurge
[21:35] Ngameratwork: two other big milestones:
[21:36]  Ngameratwork: *  first time Wii Fit failed to finish in the Top Ten for software sales since its launch 21 months ago (May '08)
[21:37] Ngameratwork: * first time Wii Play failed to make the Top 20 since its launch 36 months ago (Feb '07)
[21:37]  Ngameratwork: also  Wii Sports Resort had sold 5.11 million as of the end of Feb
[21:38]  Ngameratwork: I  doubt we get any more hard numbers on that game though, as it's coming packed in with Wiis from now on, along with the new Wii Motion Plus
[21:38]  Ngameratwork: and  that concludes this month's update!  I hope everyone got a big kick out  of it!

(8:17:47 PM) Ngameratwork has entered the room.
Ngameratwork (8:18:07 PM): glad to see so many bright shining faces
(8:22:33 PM) neo26988 has entered the room.
Ngameratwork (8:22:46 PM): ah nice, the gang's all here
Ngameratwork (8:23:37 PM): now that I have all the witnesses I need, it's time to post some info I've been keeping secret relating to Jimbo's IMs this past week...
Ngameratwork (8:24:25 PM): needless to say, this is going to blow our recent controversy wide open
GoldenJimbo007 (8:24:32 PM): I doubt it
isthatagoodt (8:24:50 PM): *kaboom*
Ngameratwork (8:24:59 PM): just kidding, instead we're going to review the most wonderful news of the year - NPD 2011 Year in Review!
(8:25:07 PM) neo26988 has left the room.
Ngameratwork (8:25:07 PM): let's start with Console Sales for the year
(8:25:09 PM) Infil12 has left the room.
Ngameratwork (8:25:18 PM): 1. 360 - 8.93 million
Ngameratwork (8:25:31 PM): 2. PS3 - 5.40 million
Ngameratwork (8:25:40 PM): 2. Wii - 5.40 million
Ngameratwork (8:25:58 PM): we don't have hard numbers yet on the handhelds, but DS did about 4 mill
Ngameratwork (8:26:09 PM): and 3DS about 3.5 mill- off to a pretty good start!
Ngameratwork (8:26:18 PM): it picked up steam big time after the price cut
Ngameratwork (8:26:48 PM): amazingly, the 360 took first place ALL 12 months this year in building that lead
GoldenJimbo007 (8:27:16 PM): Can't wait to see Wii U sales
Ngameratwork (8:27:19 PM): last year the Wii still caught it in December, but couldn't get there this time.  but how close does that bring it OVERALL?  let's check the lifetime numbers
Ngameratwork (8:27:32 PM): 1. Wii - 39.54 million
Ngameratwork (8:27:42 PM): 2. 360 - 34.33 million
Ngameratwork (8:27:51 PM): 3. PS3 - 20.87 million
Ngameratwork (8:28:19 PM): with the Wii U cutting into Wii sales while the Xbox 720 is still a ways off...
Ngameratwork (8:28:31 PM): it's POSSIBLE that the 360 ends as the winner of this generation!
Infil12 (8:28:49 PM): 360 prob should end as winner, considering it was out a year earlier and will finish later
Ngameratwork (8:28:53 PM): however since no one buys them in Europe or Asia, it's getting killed worldwide of course
Ngameratwork (8:29:17 PM): but just here in North America its been a huge success
Ngameratwork (8:29:37 PM): DS is at around 51.5 million sold
Ngameratwork (8:29:52 PM): well, a huge success everywhere except Jimbo's living room, apparently
GoldenJimbo007 (8:29:59 PM): Buying it back after the SB Jon
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:00 PM): Calm down
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:11 PM): 20 dollars cheaper :-)
Ngameratwork (8:30:19 PM): from the same guy?
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:23 PM): I want BK/BT bad enough to re-buy the 360
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:24 PM): Yes same guy
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:26 PM): I get PD back
Infil12 (8:30:27 PM): use that 20 to buy some important RB DLC
GoldenJimbo007 (8:30:34 PM): Using that 20 to get Banjo games
Infil12 (8:30:54 PM): will be disappointed if you don't get 100% achs on them
GoldenJimbo007 (8:31:03 PM): Probably 200 points?
GoldenJimbo007 (8:31:05 PM): PD was 200 iirc
Ngameratwork (8:32:00 PM): now, here are the final Top Ten games of the year.  this is when combining sales across all platforms
Ngameratwork (8:32:09 PM): 1. Call of Duty: MW3
Ngameratwork (8:32:16 PM): 2. Just Dance 3
Ngameratwork (8:32:22 PM): 3. Skyrim
Ngameratwork (8:32:27 PM): 4. Battlefield 3
Ngameratwork (8:32:35 PM): 5. Madden NFL 2012
Ngameratwork (8:32:42 PM): 6. Call of Duty: Black Ops
Ngameratwork (8:32:51 PM): 7. Batman: Arkham City
Ngameratwork (8:32:59 PM): 8. Gears of War 3
Ngameratwork (8:33:05 PM): 9. Just Dance 2
Ngameratwork (8:33:12 PM): 10. Assassin's Creed: Revelations
Ngameratwork (8:34:01 PM): no idea how Just Dance sold that much in just 40 days or something
GoldenJimbo007 (8:35:43 PM): Madden only #5 eh?
bcuts053 (8:36:11 PM): who the f keeps buying these just dance games. what even are those? like kinect dancing?
Ngameratwork (8:36:18 PM): still very popular, but can't quite compare with how much men want to shoot things and women want to dance
Ngameratwork (8:36:30 PM): no these are the ones where you hold the Wiimote in one hand
GoldenJimbo007 (8:36:38 PM): My mom and my gf bought Just Dance 3
GoldenJimbo007 (8:36:39 PM): I get it
Ngameratwork (8:36:41 PM): and to dancing motions like moving your arm around
isthatagoodt (8:39:19 PM): JD3 is cross platform
isthatagoodt (8:39:24 PM): they're awesome though!
Ngameratwork (8:39:24 PM): I assume Dance Central 2 just barely missed this chart
isthatagoodt (8:39:43 PM): JD3 is on Kinect so maybe some Xboxers that liked JD2 from wii wanted that one
isthatagoodt (8:39:53 PM): we have jD2/3 on wii
Ngameratwork (8:48:11 PM): but have they done as much for your real world dance skills as GH2/3 did for Cyber's real world guitar skills?
isthatagoodt (8:48:46 PM): well, considering i had no real world dance skills before playing, i'd say sure!
Infil12 (8:50:05 PM): only 4 shooting games on the list
Ngameratwork (8:52:26 PM): Batman shoots people also.  pretty sure that's his MO
Ngameratwork (9:11:10 PM): in summary, it was the BEST YEAR EVER for game sales here in North America
Ngameratwork (9:11:21 PM): but oddly enough, gaming collapsed this year in Japan
Ngameratwork (9:11:57 PM): in 2010 8 games sold 1 million, and the best sold 6 million.  this year only 3 games passed 1 million, and the best managed only 1.08 mil!
Ngameratwork (9:12:23 PM): that was Mario Kart, followed by Mario 3D.  also Monster Hunter for the PSP barely got there

Im Ngamer (3:51:54 AM): two years ago, Nintendo and Sony's handhelds pulled down 81% of the income from portable games in North America
isthatagoodt (3:52:04 AM): nifty
Im Ngamer (3:52:04 AM): in 2011?  it's already down to 42%
isthatagoodt (3:52:09 AM): ouch
isthatagoodt (3:52:17 AM): but is the total number down
isthatagoodt (3:52:19 AM): or just the %
Im Ngamer (3:52:47 AM): total number down, but not by a huge amount... YET
Im Ngamer (3:53:16 AM): the problem is that unlike Infil, I don't think $200ish "dedicated" handhelds ever recover
HistoricToast (3:54:20 AM): expensive dedicated handhelds are pretty much finished
HistoricToast (3:54:32 AM): unless they come up with an extraordinary feature
Im Ngamer (3:55:35 AM): ohhh, interesting, we turned this into the most successful generation ever pretty recently
Im Ngamer (3:56:01 AM): just sold our 215 millionth console, worldwide between all 3
Im Ngamer (3:56:14 AM): that's up from 211 from last generation's 4
Im Ngamer (3:56:20 AM): (includes the Dreamcast)
HistoricToast (3:56:44 AM): not that interesting itd obviously be the most successful ever?
Im Ngamer (3:57:17 AM): not really BloodE, considering how dominant the PS2 was everywhere!

Nintendo has released its official lifetime numbers.  As of the January 1st, their worldwide sales are...

Nintendo DS -- 151.06 million
Wii -- 94.97 million
Nintendo 3DS -- 15.03 million

EDIT - The all-time record for total sales by any system is 153, set by the PS2.  So the DS will take over the #1 spot soon.

Sony announced their officially updated lifetime numbers at their Q3 presser as well:

Playstation 3 - 62.0 million
PSP - 75.4 million

Which means we're now able to list the latest lifetime rankings!  Again, these are all as of January 1st, 2012.

Playstation 2 - 153.4
Nintendo DS -- 151.1
GameBoy - 118.7
Nintendo Wii -- 95.0
Game Boy Advance - 81.5

Xbox 360 - 65.8
Playstation 3 - 62.0
NES - 61.9
SNES - 49.1
Nintendo 64 - 32.9

The financial new year has arrived, meaning its time for all companies to disclose their latest numbers.  Our friends at Nintendo are no exception- the following are the worldwide total sales numbers as of April 1st, 2012.

Nintendo DS
Hardware: 151.52 million (33 mil Japan, 58 mil NA)
Software: 900.31 million

Wii
Hardware: 95.85 million (12.5 mil Japan, 45.7 mil NA)
Software: 818.46 million

Nintendo 3DS
Hardware: 17.13 million (5.9 mil Japan, 6.0 mil NA)
Software: 45.42 million
---

Now, here are the total sales numbers for specific key titles:

Nintendo DS
New Super Mario Bros. -- 29.09 million
Mario Kart DS -- 22.57 million
Pokemon Diamond/Pearl -- 17.61 million
Pokemon Black/White -- 14.71 million
Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver -- 12.40 million
Animal Crossing: Wild World -- 11.62 million
Super Mario 64 DS -- 10.37 million

Wii
Wii Sports -- 79.60 million
Mario Kart Wii -- 32.44 million
Wii Sports Resort -- 30.14 million
Wii Play -- 28.02 million

Nintendo 3DS
Super Mario 3D Land -- 5.84 million
Mario Kart 7 -- 5.24 million
Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D -- 2.61 million
---

Here's a handy chart that allows you to compare these totals versus those of past generations.

One thing you can do with that chart is answer the question "how many games did the average Wii owner actually buy?"  And compare that against past consoles.  The answer is...

GCN - 9.59
Wii - 8.54
NES - 8.08
SNES - 7.72
N64 - 6.83

DS - 5.94
GBA - 4.63
GB - 4.22
3DS - 2.65
---

Information on the coming year, based on Nintendo's official press report:

- 3DS has been sold at a loss ever since the price cut to $170; will take another 6 months before they start MAKING money on 3DS sales
- Mario Bros. 2 (2D platformer) hits in August
- new console will release in Japan/NA/Europe "at the end of the calendar year"
- Nintendo Network launches with the new console, lets users "compete and interact with others all over the world"
- expanding the digital business by releasing some standard on-disk games as downloads, doing more download-only games, and using DLC to add content to on-disk games
- ALL games on the next console will be available day one as a digital release, with a steam-like system that will set the price lower than retail and have sales and stuff
- Rayman Legends, update of Origins with new content/players, 4 player online play, and figures you can "scan" in through the tablet to active things in-game
http://www.gamekult.com/actu/rayman-legends-premiere-video-wii-u-A101141.html

EDIT - Microsoft and Sony have made their official announcements now as well.  Sony lost $5.7 billion dollars in the last fiscal year (compared to Nintendo's $450 million).  We can also now chart the...

Total Worldwide Sales over the last 12 months (as of May 1st)
PS3 -- 13.9 million
360 -- 13.6 million
3DS -- 13.53 million
Wii -- 9.84 million
PSP -- 6.8 million
DS -- 5.1 million
PS2 -- 4.1 million
PSV -- 1.8 million

Re: Gaming Sales Numbers
« Reply #79 on: October 16, 2013, 10:51:54 PM »
I've been on steam quite a bit the last couple months earning cards and selling cards/items and playing Dota 2, so I decided to dig around and pull some stats on PC gaming in general and steam in particular.  Also get into some related subjects like bandwidth use by country and state, thought it was pretty interesting!

GAMES AND THE PLAYERBASE

Of the 57 million unique gamers who have used steam in the past year, 6 million log into the service on a daily basis.
The most popular game on the service is Dota 2, with a half million concurrent users each day and 6.5 million active players in the past month.
(The next most popular game, Team Fortress 2, tops out at about 60,000 concurrent users daily.)

There are over 2000 games available on steam; of those more than 150 are quite popular, seeing over 1000 concurrent users at some point on a daily basis.
Currently 800 of steam's 2000 games feature steam achievements.
Currently 300 feature trading cards.
Currently 450 feature controller support.
Currently 800 feature multiplayer.
Currently 400 feature steam cloud support (access your game saves from any PC).
Currently 85 are free to play.

Every day steam peaks out at 2pm Eastern time, generally at around 6 million active users.
Steam's "dead hours" are always from 1am to 3am Eastern when activity falls to its lowest point (at around 3 million active users).

ACTIVITY & DOWNLOADS

On an average day, 5050 terrabytes of data are downloaded from the steam servers.
During peak hours of usage, 640 GB is being downloaded every second.
North America accounts for only 24% of steam's total bandwidth usage, well behind Europe at around 30%.
Though the United States still leads for overall bandwidth usage (around 930 TB daily), the rest of the world is quickly catching up.
Russia is now #2 on the bandwidth charts at 540 daily TB and rising, while Germany comes in third with over 350 TB.

Most active US states: California (127 TB), Texas (72 TB), New York (57 TB)
Least active states: Wyoming (1.5 TB), Vermont (1.8 TB), New Hampshire (2.9 TB), West Virginia (3.1 TB)

The world's fastest internet belongs to South Korea- each day they download roughly 100 TB at a blazing fast 35 MB per second.
That's nearly twice as quickly as the next closest competitor, Japan, which pulls down 30+ daily TB at around 20 MB/sec.
Sweden's internet earns the bronze, coming in at an average of 19 MB/sec over ~80 total TB.
Only a handful of countries download 0kb from steam on an average day: Libya, Chad, Sudan, Syria, Iran, Myanmar, and of course North Korea.

Fastest internet: Massachusetts (16 MB/sec)
Slowest internet: Arkansas (6 MB/sec)

Here's a map of where there's been steam activity in the past 24 hours

GAMING RIG ANALYSIS
(based on hardware surveys taken in September 2013)

Windows 7 is now the Operating System of choice, as would be expected, with a 64% market share.
What surprises me is that XP is down to just 7%, well behind Windows 8 (16%) though still a bit in front of Vista (6%).

INTEL is still the king of Processors, sporting an impressive 74% marketshare.
Everyone else is on AMD, which is well back at 26%.

The new standard for RAM is 8 GB at 25% market share, having just pulled ahead of longtime leader 4GB (21%).
11% are going overboard with more than 8GB, while 15% are still making due with 2 or less.

Having 2 CPUs is still the standard at 48%, however 4 CPU builds are on the rise, now accounting for 44% of all gaming PCs.

The Resolution of choice is still 1920 x 1080 for primary monitors; only 3% of gamers have pushed to a higher resolution.
Next most used is 1366 x 768 at 23%, while the old standard of 1280 x 1024 has now fallen below 8%.

NVIDIA is the new video card of choice, with a 52% market share.
ATI has fallen well back, currently down to 33% coverage.

English is still the "international language" of choice, but only barely- 48% of gamers now prefer a different language.
The fastest growing new language in gaming is Russian, now the #2 choice with a 16% share (up 1% in the last two months).

The average gamer has roughly 450 GB of Hard Drive space on their rig, but going well above and beyond is becoming more popular- 23% now are well past the 1TB mark on their main drive.

MONEY MONEY MONEY MONEY (moooooooney)

The most popular item on the steam marketplace is TF2's Mann Co. Supply Crate Series #57, with over 240,000 currently for sale.
They've sold for between 3 and 41 cents over the past week.

Each year players spend approximately $3 billion on steam games.
Developers are given roughly 70% of the money from those sales (compared to about 30% when sold at Best Buy/Gamestop/etc.)
There's no estimate available on how much money Valve has earned from steam items and trading cards and in-game purchases for TF2 and Dota 2 and other games.  But it's "a ton."
Players have created more than 185 million items of "community content" (guides, videos, screenshots, and in-game items).
---

Some takeaways

- although the steam hardware survey is anonymous it's also voluntary, so naturally gamers with hot new rigs will be more likely to click yes and share their data. I'd take all those averages with a grain of salt... for instance the latest numbers I've seen suggest XP still has about a 30% marketshare worldwide so I really doubt the OS is down to only 7% on PCs running steam

- can now play nearly 500 games just by plugging in a wired 360 controller, got to say I'm impressed by how successful their controller/Big Picture push has been in the past year or so! also quite surprised that achievements are now up on nearly half the library

- always thought it was weird that steam would peak so early in the afternoon compared to the traditional "after school vote" peak we've always seen arrive a few hours later at GameFAQs, but now that I've seen what a huge impact Europe has on that service versus our site it makes more sense

- I really wanted to find out more info on the steam Marketplace; how many total items have been sold, how much real-world money has been spent, how much of that has come back to Valve through the small fees attached to each sale. but doesn't look like they're making any of that info public

wtf Dota 2 actually has 500K concurrent players

how is that even possible

Yup I wasn't joking, Dota 2 is literally as popular as the next 30 PC games combined in terms of concurrent users per day.  The other thing is that thousands of those Dota users are playing for 8 hours a day or more. So if you were instead looking at total hours spent being active in-game per day Dota 2 might easily be as popular as the next... 50 games, or thereabouts.

Ehhh last list wasn't quite accurate, here's the real rankings for most popular games based on how many unique users are online playing them at the same time in a given day.

In January twitch put out a PDF celebrating what a successful 2013 they'd had, it featured a bunch of pretty cool stats.  I browsed through and tracked some of the numbers that impressed me, so here we goooooooo.  Remember these are all accurate as of the end of December 2013.

twitch and the streaming revolution - HOT STATS

* 45 million unique users watched someone stream on twitch in December 2013
(up from a high of 20 million in 2012)

* gamers now watch on average 6.7 million hours of livestreaming per day
(was at 3.3 million in '12)

* that works out to an average of 1.7 hours of watching streams per gamer per day
(in 2012 that number peaked at 1.3 hours)

* 900k streamed themselves playing a game in December 2013
(up from 300k in December '12)

* of that group, 243k were new users trying out streaming for the first time on their new PS4

* 25% of users with twitch accounts have streamed themselves

Now here's something fascinating.  Little bit ago I explained how Dota 2 was the most popular game on steam- well its only grown since then and yesterday someone made a video of all Dota activity in the world which was then turned into this pretty nifty gif:

http://gfycat.com/LastInexperiencedGopher

Activity peaks at about 660k playing at the same time (up from 500 back in October) and there's never less than 200k playing at any given time.  If you hover just under the image you can pause or step forward frame by frame, and if you click and grab you can zoom in to a specific area.

Things to note: Dota was originally largely a North American game but whoa has it ever taken over Europe and Asia!  NA's still going pretty strong but now South America is starting to get huge as well.  Some decent activity out of Australia these days as well, though the Middle East still appears to have not gotten into steam...  Also I get a chuckle out of how degenerate NAers are, apparently playing to all hours of the night and well into the early morning based on our heat graph.  Everyone else's activity quickly dies out after midnight, and Asia seems to have the strictest bedtimes of all.  Yikes @ how huge they blow up during prime hours though!

No Skylanders are based off Spyro, a cute purple dragon that was briefly a Sony mascot back in the 90's, they have no connection to Nintendo.  (Other than that you could buy the game for the Wii, but it was also available on 360 and PS3.)  They're figurines of dragons and other weird almost-animals like this

You buy those and place them on the special launch pad and they get "sucked into" the game, unlocking a new character with fun new powerups.  So there's some gameplay changes here and there but for the most part kids are just obsessed with collecting them all, and as you can imagine that gets expensive very quickly, which is of course why Disney and now Nintendo have tried to get a piece of the action.

In other news there's something quite fascinating happening in the world of competitive gaming that I wanted to do my best to explain.  Let's talk about

Valve and the 6 million dollar prize pool for the Dota 2 Championships

As you'll recall Dota 2 is the world's second most popular game (behind League of Legends, the PC game based off... Dota 1) that continues to explode in popularity.  In my post last year I mentioned how it had hit 500k people playing it at the same time, making it as popular as the next 40 steam games combined.  Well that number is now up to 850k and we're also about to hit a new landmark of 8 million unique players active in the past 30 days, up from roughly 3.5 million as of 12 months ago.

There are Dota 2 tournament and leagues going on every week, but the "Olympics" of the sport that everyone cares about is The International, a tournament hosted in Seattle every Summer by the game's creators (Valve) where the world's 16 best teams all fly in to compete head to head for pride, glory, and a crapton of cash.  The 2013 event drew headlines for featuring a staggering $2.8 million prize pool, by far the largest for any event in e-sports history.

Well the 2014 event is going to shatter that record and in fact more than double it, as $6 million+ will be handed out to players this July.  Where the heck is all this money coming from?  Let's break it down.

- Valve itself has posted $1.6 million (the same amount they gave out at the previous TIs in 2011, 2012, and 2013)
- $4.5 million was raised by the playerbase, as all 8 million players were given a message when they logged in saying "you can support Dota by buying an in-game item, every purchase will increase the prize pool for The International!"

The crazy thing is... only 25% of every purchase actually raised the prizepool.  In other words,

- players donated* $18 million of their own money to support this free to play game they enjoy
- of which Valve keeps $13.5 mil.  now they do put $1.6 m toward the prizepool themselves, so in the end they'll be $11.9 million in the black just from this one week event  (and that doesn't include all the money spectators will spend on tickets and tee shirts and food once they get there)

The second most crazy thing?  All of this happened in 10 days... and there's still 65 days of fundraising yet to go!  Here's a graph comparing how this 2014 money-raising effort compares to 2013, when gamers sent in enough money to raise the prizepool by $1.3 million.

But what does $6 million actually mean in terms of e-sports, or even live sports in general for that matter?  Let's try to put it in perspective.

TI 2011 was the first million+ prizepool in e-sports history, TI 2013's nearly 3 million broke all previous records for competitive gaming, but let's consider LIFETIME success.  People have been earning money by being good at videogames for well over a decade now, and fortunately there's a site that tracks just how well they have done.

http://www.esportsearnings.com/players

As you can see the world's best gamers have pulled down around $500k from prize winnings over the last 10 years, mostly through StarCraft and Counter-Strike and other shooters like Painkiller.  This means whoever wins The International will be the #1 most successful gamer the world has ever seen... even after the first place prize is split 5 ways to go to each member of the team!

However it's not just the e-sports scene that's going to be dwarfed by this payout- there's now so much money involved that even many major "regular" sports events are being overshadowed, or might be by the time the money finally stops rolling in two months from now!  Consider...

* $800k is paid out to top finishers at the Boston Marathon
* $2.2 million is the total prizepool at the Kentucky Derby
* $3 million in winnings is given out at the Tour de France annually
* $9 million will be handed out to the world's top golfers at The Masters this year
* $16 million will be on the line at Wimbledon in 2014 (in the men's singles division)

Whoa.  I mean the fact that men in their 20s and 30s have plenty of disposable income isn't exactly a revelation- it's the #1 demographic advertisers have targeted campaigns after for the last 25 years for a reason.  And in the gaming world specifically we've seen some staggering numbers thrown around, including raising $1 million in a couple weeks for AGDQ, shipping $81 million to charity through humblebundle.com since it started giving away games (4 years ago this month), and supporting the Child's Play effort at children's hospitals to the tune of $25 million in the last ten years.  But even so with The International in particular we're talking about sending in $75,000 every hour for over a week straight- it's unreal!
---

* To be fair, "donation" isn't exactly the right word to use in this context.  While its true that no one is receiving any physical gifts for supporting the Dota 2 pros, there are some perks for those willing to help out.  Essentially what you're doing is paying $10 for a PDF "booklet", much like the program you'd buy at the Super Bowl or World Cup, and $2.50 of that goes toward the prize pool.  The program is called The Compendium and it has info on all the 16 teams and players, a schedule of events, all the basic stuff you'd expect.  Plus some cool features like

- pick your favorite players, whoever gets the most votes will be invited to play in a just-for-fun 10 man All Star Match at the event
- guess which teams will finish in the Top Six, plus take a stab at which of the 100+ hero characters inside the game will do the best and worst
- get rewarded both for watching professional matches and winning your own games with a specific set of heros

Additionally Valve created a whole series of "stretch goals," little rewards that will be handed out if enough money is raised, so that everyone would encourage their friends to spend the 10 bucks.  They're all shown on this very cool website, but some highlights include

http://www.dota2.com/international/compendium/

- a new gameplay mode that simplifies Dota to a 1v1 battle instead of 5v5 team warfare
- free in-game items like a Courier (a little pet that brings you your weapons) and other rare items (like a new sword that looks cool but doesn't actually do any more damage)
- a reworked model for whatever hero the community votes on, neat new cosmetics like varied loading screens and new background music options and new environmental effects (for instance a thunderstorm might roll through the map during your game sometimes)

All in all it's quite the ingenious rollout!

EDIT - Here's a graph to give you a better idea of the prizepool.

skylanders is another gold mine from Activision

the success and sales were insane with the first two skylanders games and figurines, but it's popularity is in its decline now. The games aren't actually bad games, they are pretty enjoyable to play.

I'm surprised Ngamer didnt take this chance to link the awesome documentary that's been recently released about the first international Dota tournament. I guess most of you have seen it already, if not, go check this out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjZYMI1zB9s

We hit some major milestones this week, passing 8 million currently active players and extending the TI4 prizepool past 9 million dollars.  (Meaning the actual total for money "donated" would now be 9 minus 1.6 times 4 = $29 million+.)

But yes Cara is right about Free To Play, dead right.  It's a great documentary about the first International tournament back in 2011 that puts the entire focus on three individual players and their struggles, so you don't have to know anything about professional gaming in general or Dota 2 in particular to enjoy it.  They do a really good job of giving outsiders just the most basic details about the game and the teamwork it requires without going too indepth and making it confusing.  You could check it out on youtube at

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjZYMI1zB9s

OR alternatively if you search "Free to Play" inside steam it's the first result, you can download it for free there and watch in HD with some extras and bonus footage and funny stuff like steam achievements.

If like Cara you do give it a watch (it's pretty short for a doc) you'll be well prepared to enjoy some of the TI4 coverage later this month!  I'll go over the connections in a SPOILER FREE fashion (as in won't spoil who wins what in the movie)

EHOME, the dominating team from China in the movie is pretty much still around.  Their best players went on to form a new Chinese team called DK, and in fact they've been so successful here in 2014 that most consider them the favorite to win TI4 outright!

Dendi, the European player, is still active and actually hardly anything has changed since 2011.  He's still considered one of the best players in the world and is on the same team with most of the same teammates.  NaVi hasn't been as dominating in 2014 as in years past but they're a team of savvy vets who always play well in the brightest spotlight so no one's counting them out as a top TI4 contender.

Fear, the American player, is still active.  He's the leader of a team called EG and they're the best North American squad Dota 2 has ever seen, easily the continent's best chance at winning a TI.   Unfortunately he ruined his wrists playing on the awful desk you see in the film for so many years and may be forced into retirement as a high-level player!  That's okay though because he's already transitioning into coaching and doing play by play on broadcasts, you'll most likely be see him in those roles at the main event.

(The Asian player hyhy is retired and won't be at TI4 in an official capacity).
---

But getting back to numbers, Nintendo put out a press release this week in celebration of Mario Kart 8 where they confirmed official worldwide numbers for every MK game.  In order of release we have

SNES - 8.76 million
N64 - 9.87 million
GBA - 5.91 million
GCN - 6.88 million
DS - 23.56 million
Wii - 35.53 million
3DS - 9.62 million (and counting)

That comes out to over 100 million, making MK one of the most successful franchises in history.  As for MK8 the jury is still out, of course, but we at least know it's off to a hot start- Nintendo confirms it sold over 1.2 million copies opening weekend, more than any previous Kart has sold at launch.

Quick update on my steam stats from last year:

* steam is up to 125 million active user accounts

Of which 42 million have downloaded Dota 2 (and at least tried it out for a minute).  Some other Dota stuff...

- that 42 million is up 85% from this time last year
- 11 million have played a match in the last month
- 8 million are "hardcore" players with 150+ hour logged
- the most ever online and playing at the same time was hit last week at 1.25 million (up 54% from the old record 12 months ago)

The big Dota world championship main event called The International 5 starts on Monday, as you may remember from this thread we raised the prize pool to over $10 million last year.  Well this year we smashed that record and are about to reach $18 million, meaning TI5 will give away more than the next three largest e-sports tournaments combined!  It's also more cash for one event than has been handed out in the entire lifetime of StarCraft, StarCraft II, Counter-Strike (all versions combined), and every other game not named "League of Legends".

Pretty crazy but mainly I just wanted to post here to archive a project I worked on this week after Infil was interested.  Maybe someone else will like it as well- it's a neat little window into the world of Dota that doesn't require any knowledge of the game or how it all works.  From the mail I sent out on the subject....

I wanted to bring up something new and really cool that Valve is trying this year.  They hosted a Dota short film contest where you were free to use live action footage, Source film maker, hand drawn animation- whatever you wanted so long as the video was only 60 seconds long.  The top films will be rewarded with $20,000 in prize money at the end of the event, so as you can imagine there were lots of submissions and the competition was fierce.

I watched over 200 of the more highly rated movies and kept track of the ones that most impressed me so I'd be able to craft my own Top Ten, and here's the result!  (I'd really recommend giving these a watch, some are amazing and clicking in will literally only take you a minute.)

The Battle Begins - http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=480294762
An absolutely gorgeous Source film maker rendering of the "calm before the storm," aka the arena's peaceful field of play just before the horn sounds and chaos erupts.

[6:52 PM] ~Ng: clap your hands for joy Jimbo, that Nintendo earnings report you requested has arrived!
[6:53 PM] ~Ng: finally tally is 18 million sold for the Switch in year one, that's easily a new record (Wii did 14, PS4 did 13) and puts it past the Wii U already for lifetime sales
[6:54 PM] ~Ng: biggest games are Mario at 10, Mario Kart at 9, 8.5 for Zelda, and 6 for Splatoon.  MK8 has now sold more copies for Switch than its lifetime sales on the Wii U (same for Splatoon)
[6:59 PM] ~Ng: SNES Mini up to 5 million sold in 6 months, and BotW has just passed Ocarina as top Zelda game

That's astonishing and far beyond anyone's expectations.

Intriguing to me is how universally criticized the Wii U was (it really wasn't a bad system at all and had some fantastic games) and then all of a sudden the Switch is universally praised. Everyone said it was the underpowered graphics of the Wii U but by all accounts the Switch isn't that much of an improvement (I have yet to buy a Switch). Just interesting.

The Wii U was an unattractive purchase even for a Nintendo supporter

I don't doubt that was true for some, but what specifically did you find unattractive?

too similar to the wii (name and concept), dumb controller, no exciting games, felt like a wii expansion rather than a new console..
