I needed to look through all the past Virginia Tournament results to complete a VA project I put together for this year and yikes, what a pain!  Everything was spread across different areas of six different topics plus a number of spreadsheets... to make sure that wouldn't happen again I decided to consolidate everything down to this one topic, which will be updated once a year when the results are posted.

Here's the table of contents

Post One - Every Goldeneye result in VA history
Post Two - Every Mario Kart result in VA history
Post Three - Every Ping Pong result in VA history
Post Four - Every Combined Yearly Rankings in VA history
Post Five - Every Final Four in VA history (pic proof)

In collecting this I was able to finish another project- putting together the Combined Ranks for 2011/12/13/14/15/16, then adding everything together to give us the

Virginia All-Time Combined Rankings

#43 to 70 available at https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qBWq9kLmM2x-yNaTx_YKajHROa7OBHc8BSioWLhGtwo/edit?usp=sharing

This uses the GE, Kart, and Ping Pong results from every season.  You get 1 point for participating plus an extra point for everyone you finish ahead of- for instance coming in 3rd in Kart = 14 points (if 16 people competed).

This chart can be viewed in both text and Google Docs form from the bottom of the Combined Ranks post.

(for the first time ever we ran this tournament with double-elimination settings- after getting knocked out of the main bracket you were allowed to keep playing on the "loser's bracket" until someone knocked you out for good.  this meant that the "champ" of the main bracket had to face off against the winner from the loser's side in a Grand Final before the final #1 could be determined)

17.     Wonn   13.46   (vs Clark, LOSERS)

In x-stats your strength is always determined by your performance in the match where you were eliminated.  Thanks to the double elim format, everyone had two match results they could potentially base their strength on- the one that knocked them out of the Winners bracket, and the one that fully killed them over in the Losers.  Between the two, I always choose the result that gave a player the more positive result.  As an example of how that worked, let's look at the biggest oddball in these stats:  9th placed Jimbo.  He didn't look too hot in the Winners Finals, scoring only 29% of the points in getting thumped 20-8 by Patrik, which was pretty typical- nearly everyone took a pretty rough exit from the Winners Bracket.  Jim's case is unique in that Woll then went on to blast him 20-2 in the Losers Final, giving him no secondary result to fall back on, which was obviously pretty damaging in terms of his final result.

MARIO KART

EDIT - Complete Kart Results sheet, tracked by Mark Jones: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ux95KPQ72Z7bAN9DZrKccSnyVXHsKJ4pmIgkTnh5MIE/edit?usp=sharing

The 2007 World Mario Kart 64 Championship

We started out with 16 total players (well 15 actually since QB didn't play, but let's say 16 to keep it simple), and wanted to work our way down to an 8-man single elimination tournament.  We determined the top eight players, and their seeding, by playing 4 different rounds of 4 player Kart, on all 4 TVs we had going in the house.

Every round consisted of racing through all 16 courses in the game at 150cc, and every round you played against 3 different Karters, and also had to use a different character in the game.  For instance in two rounds I was fourth pick, and so I had to play with Bowser, but to make up for that I was also first pick once, so I got to play with my favorite guy, Yoshi.  The scoring for every round went 3 points for every race you win, 2 for second, 1 for third, 0 for 4th.  So if you won all 16 races in a round that was 16 x 3 = 48 points added to your total, and the max number of pts possible would have been 48 x 4 = 192.

With that in mind, here are the opening rounds final scores and results!

Opening Round Results
1. Layne - 165 pts
2. JT - 156 pts
3. Nate - 138 pts
4. Wonn - 128 pts
5. Weatherton - 128 pts
6. Lovins - 125 pts
7. wheat - 109 pts
8. Jimbo - 104 pts
(below here did not make the cut)
9. Trent - 103 pts
10. Sterling - 94 pts
11. Clark - 80 pts
12. Ng - 67 pts
13. Woll - 52 pts
14. Matis - 45 pts
15. Jon M. - 44 pts
16. Ghost aka QB - 0 pts

The result between Jim and Trent was so close that we went to a 1- race playoff to decide the winner, which Jim took.  That made

The MK64 Tournament Bracket
1. Layne
8. Jimbo

4. Wonn
5. Weatherton

3. Nate
6. Lovins

2. JT
7. wheat

The setup for the Tournament was a 2 player race through all four Cups in 150cc GP mode.  Scoring was determined by the normal in-game scoring, so 9 pts for first, 6 for second, and so forth.  A perfect score for one Cup was 9 x 4 = 36, so an overall perfect result would have been to score 36 x 4 = 144 points in advancing past your opponent.  Here's how things went.

1. Josh defeats 8. Jimbo, 141-78
- Jim only kept Josh from taking 1st one race, in Flower Cup

4. Wonn defeats 5. Weatherton, 130-75
- Weatherton's closest result was a 28-18 loss in Flower Cup

3. Nate defeats 6. Lovins, 121-96
- Lovins topped Nate handily in Star Cup, 33-22, but was doomed by a very bad 33-12 loss in Flower

2. JT defeats 7. wheat, 112-85
- wheat snuck by 24-19 in Special, and kept it close elsewhere, but JT was able to pull it out in a tight result

The Final Four

1. Josh defeats 4. Wonn, 141-85
- Josh turns up the intensity another level, again not winning only a single time, while Wonn had difficulty improving on Jimbo's result

3. Nate defeats 2. JT, 114-108
- the tournament's only upset sees JT taking Special convincingly at 33-27, but it wasn't quite enough because Nate stole both Flower and Star by 6 (Mushroom was a 27-27 tie)

The Championship

The result was actually more in doubt than you'd think... but still, there wasn't much question about it.

1. Josh defeats 3. Nate, 124-97
- Stinson hung tough in Mushroom, losing only 36-27, then threatened to make things interesting by taking Flower 24-19, but after a near stalemate in Star (33-30) the wheels came off the wagon in Special Cup, where he lost 36-16

There was also a Bronze Medal Match, where we saw

2. JT defeats 4. Wonn, 120-97
- again, the underdog kept it close for a while, snuck out a win (30-27 to Wonn in Star), but collapsed with the pressure on at Special (30-16 to JT)

EDIT - Oh, and if anyone is interested in going more in-depth with the results, firstly I would be shocked out of my mind, and secondly the full spreadsheet we used to keep track is now online at

Weatherton defeats Wonn, 11-1 11-9
Sterling defeats Matis, 14-12 12-10
JT defeats Layne, 11-7 10-12 11-9
Nate defeats Woll, 11-7 11-1
Clark defeats Jimbo, 11-5 11-5
Trent defeats wheat, 11-5 11-5
QB defeats Ngamer, 11-5 9-11 11-3

The Elite Eight
* Weatherton defeats Lovins, 11-6 11-7

* Sterling defeats JT, 11-4 11-7

* Nate defeats Clark, 11-5 11-4

* QB defeats Trent, 13-11 15-13

The Final Four
* Sterling defeats Weatherton

* Nate defeats QB

The Championship
* Nate defeats Sterling

Just as with GE, the stats are based on how many points you scored on your opponent in your losing match.  The number means, "based on your matches, this is what percent of the total points you would be able to score in a direct matchup against the overall winner."  Here we go.

2007 Ping Pong X-Stats
1.      Nate      50.00%
2.      Sterling  43.18%
3.      Weatherton 41.19%
4.      Matis     39.58%
5.      QB        39.47%
6.      Trent     36.44%
7.      Lovins    30.60%
8.      Clark     29.03%
9.      JT        28.79%
10.     Ngamer    27.96%
11.     Layne     26.87%
12.     Woll      26.67%
13.     Wonn      25.74%
14.     wheat     22.77%
15.     Jimbo     18.15%
16.     Jon M     0.00 %

Jon couldn't have gotten above 0 no matter what happened, since he didn't score a point in his opening match.  But to give you an idea, if he had scored just 1 point his strength would have been... 4.35%.  Overall I'd say these rankings are quite accurate, given the results of our matches.  Skill-wise Weatherton would certainly be #2 if not #1, but hey, he *SPOILER* got beaten by Sterling straight up, so there's no way the stats could reflect that.  Matis might be just a touch high due to Sterling overperforming in every single match after R1, but that's not too big a deal because Adam was a legit Top Eight player from what I saw, and would have advanced out of round one had he drawn almost anyone else.

The Championship Match really threw these stats for a loop, as points-wise Woll and Trent performed much better against Duff head to head than Dylan was able to manage.  Which in turn makes Dylan's whole half of the bracket (Nate, Jones, Lovins, Andrew...) look weaker than expected.  Other than that, these ended up being a pretty solid set of stats IMO.  People with a * were play-ins who did not advance into the official bracket, BTW.

COMBINED RANKS

2007 VA Meet Combined Rankings

Hoooo boy!  So for instance, Jim won GE, so that earned him 16 points.  But he got made a fool of in PP, finishing ahead of only Jon M in the standings, so that showing was only worth 2 points.  Get the idea?  In that case, here's how things would stack up

1. Andrew Weatherton - 35 points
2. Josh Layne - 34 points
3. Trent Hovis - 34 points
4. Nate Stinson - 33 points
5. Sterling Neblett - 32 points
6. Eddie Lovins - 32 points
7. Adam Matis - 29 points
8. Jimbo Barrett - 27 points
9. JT - 26 points
10. Greg Woll - 23 points
11. David Wonn - 23 points
12. Derek Clark - 22 points
13. Ngamer - 20 points
14. Brent "wheat" Wingert - 18 points
15. Josh "QB" Lay - 14 points
16. Jon M. - 6 points

In the case of a tie, the person with the better "best" result earns the go-ahead.  So even though Trent took 2nd in GE, Layne won MK64 outright, so he takes the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Congrats to our host on taking home the overall Championship!  Andrew was only truly "top tier" in ping pong, but in a competition like this one it's not about dominating one sport but rather not having any weaknesses in your overall game, and thanks to his shocking near-upset of Matis (Facility 10-9) in their first match, that's exactly what Weatherton could claim.  Trent would have stolen the overall #1 position away had he only beaten Jimbo in their one-race MK64 tiebreaker, as that was the 1 point holding him back.  Layne could have dominated the entire field had he managed to finish off JT in match three of their R1 PP battle, just like Nate would have taken the whole competition in a laugher if not for the truly ugly beatdown (Temple 10-0) Trent applied in their last GE shootout.

The 2008 Virginia Combined Rankings

Since there were 23 players this year, if you finished first in a tourney, that's worth 23 pts towards your overall.  2nd place is worth 22 pts, and so on down to last, which earns you only 1.

Last year I did these ranks off pure X-Stats, but this time I'm using the more "fair" system of pts being based on how far you advanced into the brackets, with the stats just doing tiebreakers.  So for instance Trent is 4th in the stats and Jim is 8th, but for these rankings it will go 1. Patrik 2. Trent 3. Illu 4. Jimbo.  With that in mind, here we go!

(* note: these points are NOT based on x-stats, but rather how far players were able to advance in each of these brackets.  so for instance Jimbo gets credit for a 4th place finish in GE, not the 9th that the stats would award him)

Congrats to Eddie Lovins, who defends his '08 VA Championship with room to spare!  He's clearly the meet's one true all-around competitor, and its going to be very tough for anyone to knock him off the top of the podium in '10.  Nabbing the Silver for the second year in a row is Nate, whose streak to the Kart Final Four was just barely enough to hold off Trent, who had tied Nate for 2nd place last year.

For the 2nd season in a row Jim pulled the impressive feat of Dual Final Fours, but this time he improved a little bit at ping pong as well, launching him to the 4th overall position.  That was just barely enough to edge the super-talented (except for ping pong, but even there he's pretty decent!) Patrik, who rounds out the Top Five.  '07 Champ Weatherton looked solid again this season, using his all-around skills to stay even with Kart Champ Wonn.

Congrats to Trent, who clutched his way to a 1 point victory over defending Champ Eddie to earn the title of Overall VA 2010 Champ!  And props to Nate and Weatherton for not being too far behind, either- both just need to work on their GE skills a little and they could easily steal the title next season.

Congrats to Lovins, who earns his 3rd VA Championship in the past four years!  (Only ones able to beat him so far are Weatherton in '07 and Trent in '10.)  Patrik tried to give him a run but came up just short in both GE and Ping Pong.  Most Improved Player award goes to Clark, who bounced from 17th all the way to 4th this year... and was actually only 2 pts from earning the Silver medal!  Jimbo's a bit frustrated by his 7th place finish (worst result since 2007), but I'm sure he'll bounce back next year.

Congrats to Third- after a 6th place finish last year he stepped up his game up in a major way across the board, knocking off 3 time winner Lovins for the 2012 Championship!  A great showing for sure, but he's lucky that Karl has never gotten into Kart- the talented Aussie came within 4 pts of the Silver despite never touching a controller the entire MK64 tourney!  Always a #1 threat in the past, Nate had two more strong results but slipped to 6th due to a poor showing in GE.  Aside from Karl the most impressive newcomers were OD and Dan, both landing in the Top Ten despite taking very different paths to get there (Dan dominated at PP while OD was a consistent all around player).

Congrats to Dan Edeen!  After finishing 10th in 2012 he was unstoppable this season- I mean, hard to do much better than a top two finish in both events, jeez.  With no official GE tourney this seemed like Nate's year to shine, and he certainly did so in Ping Pong but came up a little short in Kart (5th place) and had to settle for silver.  Lovins wasn't able to earn what would have been a record-setting 4th VA Gold but he still had a great year, earning the bronze and increasing his lead by 6 points on the All Time charts.  Third and Jones ended just a step back to round out the Top Five.

A round of congratulations to Trent, now a two-time VA Champion (he also emerged victorious in 2010)!  Despite just missing the podium in Goldeneye he made up for it with a very strong third place showing in Kart to solidify his position on the top of the charts.  Nate also had a very good season and in fact edged Trent out in MK64, but electing to forgo the GE tourney cost him a shot at his first ever VA Gold Medal.

If there were ever a Summer for Jimbo to finally take home his first VA crown it would be in the first year without an official Ping Pong tournament... but no dice, instead it's a record-setting third Championship for Lovins!  Jim did finish well ahead of him in Kart, but couldn't manage a spot on the podium in GE and that was just enough to dash his chances at the #1 overall finish.  Trent and Jake also gave themselves a nice boost upwards by competing in both games, enough to push Kart Champ Jones down to 5th for the year.

Well, kind of silly to call this a "combined" rankings since the only official competition was Kart... but still, a well deserved congrats to Zoran for denying Jim his first yearly win by a single point (for the second year in a row).  That makes him only the 6th person to claim the VA crown, and the first since 2007 to win it all in his first attempt.

Updated with 2014 results - Lovins maintains the lifetime crown, but consistent performers Trent and Nate have cut his lead to a razor thin margin.   The overall top 7 remained unchanged (Matis had build up enough of a cushion to take one year off) but Third was stung badly by unfortunate timing of his family vacation, tumbling 3 spots to #11.  Wonn was likewise passed by two in his absence, including a returning Patrik who will be looking for a spot in the Top Ten this Summer.  The biggest mover was JT, who leaped 7 positions by making a strong comeback after a five year hiatus.

Updated with 2016 results - lots of newcomers have joined us at the Lakehouse in recent years, bumping us up to 70 total competitors in the history of the Virginia meets; pretty cool!  Lovins is still the King of the World, as he has been for several years, however his margin for error is now razor thin after missing his first ever week and allowing his eternal rival Trent to pick up quite a few points with another solid showing in the Kart tourney.  Nate has also had a further two very strong years, enough to move him within striking distance of #1 if he puts together a successful 2017 campaign.

No one's happier than Jimbo that there hasn't been a Ping Pong tournament recently- his greatest weakness was Weatherton's greatest strength, and its elimination has allowed Jim to slip past AW into 4th place.  But the biggest mover and shaker is of course Mark Jones, riding his Kart success all the way to a coveted spot in the Top Ten (up from 13th).  If he can make the Finals again in 2017 it could give him another +3 and lock him into being VA's All Time "007".

JT's resurgence continues as he's risen all the way to Top 20, though luckily Boss was able to make it back to the Lakehouse to hold him off by few points.  Also super impressive: Dennison, skyrocketing up the charts to #36 with some strong Kart play the last couple years, and Jake who's had two of the best years ever for a newcomer and secured himself a spot in the Top 40 as a result.

UPDATED with all 2014 results.  Looking good, except that someone needs to step up and start taking all these Final Four pictures we've been missing since 2012!

UPDATED with all results for both 2015 and 2016.  Nothing new happened in Ping Pong but we did have a smaller GE bracket in '15 and of course very intense Kart competitions both weeks- and we finally got our first new Final Four picture since 2012, gosh!

The updated All Time Combined Ranks can be found in the first and fourth posts, but here's a copy of my new writeup for 2016:

Lots of newcomers have joined us at the Lakehouse in recent years, bumping us up to 70 total competitors in the history of the Virginia meets; pretty cool!
