Why we choose our usernames!
« on: September 23, 2013, 07:03:03 pm »
I'm going to take a wild guess and assume that Jimbo isnt the only one who has no idea what Flickerform means, also that he isnt the only curious one, and at least some of you have wondered what it is.

I'll tell you.
Obviously speedrunning isnt my first and foremost mode of time-wasting. I do other things like play League of Legends ( :kappa: ), but thats not important.

What is important is the game known as Magic: The Gathering. I'm sure some of you have heard of it, and maybe some of you are even familiar with it.

I would probably say that collecting and playing Magic is my main hobby and probably what I spend most of my money on, which is unfortunate because I'm usually left financially stricken due to my own dumbassery.

So it was pretty recently that I decided to do a massive screen-name overhaul of my internet alias. I wanted a meaningful name and not something unoriginal and halfassed.

I was thinking about my favorite Magic cards. I do specifically have one favorite card and that's:
Spoiler

So my first idea was something along the lines of Crypt Champion. After thought, it didnt seem very fitting and unique enough for me. Also, I wanted a one-word name.

I moved past my favorite individual cards and into my favorite individual sets. Naturally my favorite set is from right when I started getting into Magic seriously.

This was back in '05, the set is called Ravnica: City of Guilds.

Criteria: One word, unique ability, from Ravnica.

This card is the only card that allowed Auras to return to a "blinked" creature.
Spoiler
Understanding the usefulness of "blinking" a creature can be overlooked, but triggering "enter the battlefield" and "leaves the battlefield" abilities can prove incredibly valuable.

There you have it.

Interesting. I think this would be a good thread to say where other people's usernames/PD names come from.

Great idea. Reflected that in the subject line (kinda acts like thread title)

Scrambler Fanny is a simple way to correlate the fact that I am a fan of the Zynga game Scramble With Friends.

My original SN is afanoftherings (ringfan, fanofrings, fanny, etc) which is an allusion to me being a massive Lord Of The Rings fan.  <3

My name: Jim Barrett
My original AIM screen name: GoldeneyeGuy007
Greg Woll's AIM screen name: GoldenGreg007

My current screen name for most things in life: GoldenJimbo007. I'd also like to mention  that "Jimbo" is mentioned in Caverns 00A, my favorite level :kappa:

bke16 is my Quake 3 SN from 2002-2003. I post from that account on my phone.
perfectace05 is just a random name I thought of a month before I joined the ranks. The 05 obviously comes from 2005.
True Faith is used to impersonate Clemens on SM streams a name I copied from Clemens since it sounds good etc.

I've posted the Goose part here before, but this is an extensive history of all my aliases.

Goose

This name comes from hockey.  I was a goaltender, and I had a pretty cool coach when I was 13 years old who had played professional in Europe.  I had a really fast glove hand, and he would compare it to a mongoose snatching up a snake.   Whenever I would make a big save, he would yell "MONGOOSE" from the bench, and you could only mostly hear the "Goose" part.  Eventually it got shortened to Goose, which was fitting because I played well that year, and getting a shutout in hockey is colloquially called a "goose egg."  Ever since then I've been known as Goose.

I've always liked a screen name with no numbers, so adding White to make it White Goose made sense given my last name, and made a really nice internet username I feel.

Zenith Legend

I also liked to come up with really intense sounding usernames.  I've made a few more short-lived ones in the past like Ancient Text, Omnivoyant Presence and Lux Aeterna, but Zenith Legend was the most successful and is the only one people people might still regularly associate with me.  I've always been fairly into astronomy, and the "zenith" is the point in the sky directly above you, so it's a pretty powerful point in that field.  Then adding "legend" completes it and makes it epic.  It never had anything to do with the TV brand Zenith, but a few people only knew of the word from that brand, so they thought it was from there.

True Religion

True Religion is a complete troll from True Faith; a name Clemens selected in honour of a New Order song.  True Religion however, is a company which makes very expensive jeans, costing like $500.00 a pair, and are often referenced in rap and hip-hop songs (like Fergie's Fergalicious.)  The irony involved in parodying True Faith with such an opulent, material garment company is simply genius in my mind, and I've always wanted to make this parody a thing.  It also works very well with the whole "truth" and "religion" topics semi-frequently going around on these forums.  I really wish someone would go back to True Faith on the PD rankings to complement my name there.

because it seemed suitable for a GE community and I hold fascination for military intelligence topics since I did the mandatory military service for my medieval country including two months of Schengen-Area border patrols.

Flicker: Hehe MTG, played that quite a bit 1999-2001 and 2003 in school. Still have Gaea's Cradle n' shit :v

"The Shadow" comes from the old radio and pulp fiction series in the '30s and '40s.

When I first joined my mother insisted no one know my real name (axe murderers ye be all!) so I picked an individual who was mysterious and whose identity was unknown. Often I'll append "N64" if I can't get "Shadow".

For a while I also used "MOPVHS EHL", which looks like "The Shadow" when viewed upside down.

The "mirror" part of my name comes from when I wanted to be a hacker a few years ago. I was getting into programming and computers etc. and I wanted to come up with some cool name. Mirror became that name. I never used it for account usernames but later on I decided to add "mage" to the end because I thought it sounded cool and I generally pick the wizard/mage class for most games.

Random hockey nickname made at me in jest during a particularly brutal game where my team was losing by a pretty high number of goals (which was pretty common, as I always played on a team that was a lot of people who didn't start playing until adulthood, and we ended up against teams of freakin' Canadian kids who learned to skate before they could walk).  I played defense, sometimes people call defensemen 'blueliners', and I made a pretty awesome defensive move on a player that was several skill levels higher than me (and uh, the move was 100% pure dumb luck/accident).  So my BFF at the time said "nice play, Blueline Goddess!" and it became this huge running joke.

Now I'm too poor to play hockey (and honestly don't know when I'd find the time if I had the money) so it's an even bigger joke.

On other forums I'm "MBPearls" which is my horse's registered name abbreviated down (Mollys Baby Pearls).

Stefan Persson: my real name.

Anemptybox: one of Porcupine Tree's oldest and more obscure songs is called "An Empty Box" and I thought it would be a cool nick for me.

Ace: I really liked the Ace Ventura movies when I was a kid so I started using Ace in games and such back in 1998-1999 I think, and it's still my nick on the TS Elite and a few other sites. Many older games only let you type in three letters for a name/high score/whatever, so that's another reason why I liked it.

speedruntrainer: I couldn't think of a username actually so, I decided to choose this name from 'speedrunning' I also think you're also 'training' in the levels you speedrun in, so this is it. I also like it with the small 's'
The 'good' before it was never intended. Something failed with the registration, so I had to. Could just use a simple dot lol.

Combat Simulator Strat Master: This was only a limited time with the Strat Master hype at the-elite. I used this because I used to play Combat Simulator all the time, and I still do.

Dark Slayer - uhh, I'm afraid the explanation is gonna make it sound lame. :P I wanted something PD-related and the Slayer was my favorite weapon - I was truly amazed when I found out you could shoot rockets on 1st person view, thought it was really awesome. "Dark" is from the game title.  So yeah, I wasn't thinking "badass assassin" when I created that name, the coolness factor was just a bonus. Good thing they didn't put the fly-by-wire function on the Laptop Gun or the CMP150 :nesquik: (on the other hand, "Dark Cyclone" would've sounded pretty cool).

Dark Phoenix (on the old Brazilian PD ranks) - same as above, "Dark" from the title and the Phoenix used to be my favorite weapon (I hadn't found the Slayer yet).

SpeedingBullet (on Twitch) - I thought about using Dark Slayer there too, but then the captcha showed me those two words you need to enter in order to complete the form... guess which words they were. :kappa: God, I'm so creative.

ps - back when we had to host our timepages on Geocities and shit, I registered there as "Devastator11". Disco's name on the forums was "Discombobulator11". Very creative indeed. :kappa:

Time was untied when set.

I like this topic

random names Ive used:

-b1zarretr1angle(aim). Classic old aim name. Obvious from the song Bizarre Love Triangle by new order, which was my favorite band and song for the longest time. Still love this band, but ive grown somewhat exhausted of listening to them.

- True Faith(original PD name and current SM name on deertier.com) Again new order lol. Ace uses it as a troll but thats fine by me Kappa

-ExtractedLife007- I think I made this when I was playing extraction a lot in PD lol. kinda silly name but it ended up working out well for me for whatever reason. I like it overall.

-Drug against Angst- Most lol name ever probably. Got the idea from the kmfdm song "drug against war" and their album titled Angst back when I was really into them. i actually dont regret this name at all but seeing people constantly butcher it and get the wrong idea as to why i chose it made me feel like it was a poor choice.

Comet: A nickname Ngamer gave me when I first started going into chat (a play on my last name being Haley - Halley's Comet) that just stuck.

Blue Lightning: I don't actually remember where I got the name from or why I used it, but the PD ranking is the only place I actually use it.

Nice stories about the usernames actually.

Dark Maian(y): Just a silly name I picked since I began with playing PD when I came to the-elite. Maian just happened to be one of a few kinda suiting PD words that haven't been used yet in a "Dark " name  :kappa:

teHfl0werP0wer: fl0wer comes from my surname (Blom) which is directly is translated to blossom in english but also in swedish it is very connected to "blomma" which translates to flower. People sometimes call me "blomman" (where "the flower" part comes from) because of it and I dont mind being called Blomman because its pretty cool actually. P0wer is like what it says, power and it rhymes.

HBlomz: Just a kind of shortening of my real name with a added letter at the end.

Henning Blom: My real name.

Yeah Im horrible with making up aliases and usually I just use my real name or names related to it in a way or the other when I pick names now.

SGT RAGEQUIT - I used to be angrier, now the name doesn't really fit. Why SGT? Admiral was taken by another blond fuck  :nesquik:

other considerations were:
PERSONAL SPACE INVADER (my soundcloud name), from an Andrew Jackson Jihad tune
WHITE BITCH VIOLATOR (old soundcloud name)
HOT GAY JUKES (no clue where I got that from, now my twitter handle)
ASSMASTER BLADESMITH (was watching a show called Forged In Fire and misread some guy's name tag)

TroubleClef92:

This name is pretty punny, and I never really had an internet alias name at the point when I discovered this name. Back when it was only the vanilla version of World of Warcraft, I distinctly remember running through Thunder Bluff and there was a random Tauren sitting at a mailbox named "Troubleclef", I must have been like 12 or 13 years old at the time and thought that was epic.

I first had the opportunity to adapt the name for my gamertag when I was 18 and I bought my TV and Xbox 360 in 2010 with my combined first two paycheques at the first job I'd had, dishwashing.

It's just been the name I've used with everything else since then. It carries irony because I found it through gaming, yet I am (or at least was) a huge music geek.

I added the 92 because, y'know, 1992 master race. :kappa:

After the legend of Jonas Darkness, I knew I needed a new online screen name back in 2010 or so, when I was a hotshot pokemon battler, so I sat down with my thinking head and this was the most generic but still unique nickname I came up with that didn't sound like total trash (just a bit trashy):

That would make you speedruntrainee. I always thought it was meant as you training other people in speedrunning.
me too

I got my name josh116pep because a long time ago when I created my email josh was already taken. No surprise there. So I added 116 to it. 116 was the house number I grew up on at the time. As time went on and I used more site my username would be taken even with 116. So I added pep to the end of it. "pep" comes from Pepperton it was the street I grew up on. That is how I got the username josh116pep.

When I was in like 6th grade ~'02 or '03 I got battlefield 1942, my first proper online fps game. I liked to sorta sneak around and shoot people with PPSH and and the STG44 and whatnot in close quarters so I thought Shaddow Walker was a good username (sic i was and always will be a bad speller). I fixed the spelling that year when I started playing counterstrike online with some IRL friends.

At some point I didn't like the generic nature of the name because I was self-aware enough to know that anything shadow is overdone even in middle school. So I decided to reverse the name because you know its cool kinda like (3D dohtem) I guess probably around '05. The name has stuck, I like it. But ya.

oh seems I never posted here

ok here goes, basically since my name is Ilari someone started calling me Illu for short, and joked about also calling me Illu pillu since pillu in finnish means cunt, had many finnish classmates back then.

Over the years I grew to like my nick (and pillu) and now I communicate much in english though and in english the name is closer to illumination.

So basically I was a cunt but now I'm Illuminated.

Someone trolled the boards with the username sn1per patr0l in 2009. I thought it was funny, so I began to use the name myself to troll many years later. Eventually, I began to use it seriously.

Still wondering who the original sniper patrol was. Oh well.
Lark is just a shortened version of my last name. Ngamer coined it in the old days of the elite chatroom.

one of my friends in middle school came up with "Taylor Tot" when he crossed my first name with Tater Tot. I thought it was pretty clever at the time and had a nice ring to it so I started using it as my online alias after adding FTW (ForTheWin) to the end because I just started regularly going on the internet. Years later when I realized how lame it was I considered changing to just TaylorTot but instead just decided to change FTW to mean FuckTheWorld to more accurately reflect my post-ironic taste in humor

The name ClashingAshes came from a couple things, one being the character Ash from the evil dead series, which is one of my favorites, and the other being the Clash, which is one of my favorite bands.
I think Luke coined Sammy Rodgers, not sure what led to it but I like it.

For me it started when I first got permission to get on the Internet at the library. My mom was terrified that everyone online was a serial killer and insisted I never use my real name. I'd listened to a bunch of old radio shows about "The Shadow" from the 30s and 40s, who was a figure who was never seen, only heard and whose identity was a secret. I thought it fit. That was in 2000, and since then yeah, everybody is Shadow-this or Shadow-that.

I went through a phase where I also used MOPVSH EHL, sort of like Wodahs' only upside down instead of just backwards.
