2014 NFL Playoff Predictions
« on: January 01, 2014, 02:13:12 am »
It's that time of year once again! Of the 32 fine clubs in the NFL, 12 of them now remain in the playoffs, in a fight to the death to see who becomes the champion of Super Bowl XLVIII.

First up in the NFL playoffs is the Wild Card round! Here's what the seeding looks like:

AFC:
(1) Denver Broncos
(2) New England Patriots
(3) Cincinnati Bengals
(4) Indianapolis Colts
(5) Kansas City Chiefs
(6) San Diego Chargers

NFC:
(1) Seattle Seahawks
(2) Carolina Panthers
(3) Philadelphia Eagles
(4) Green Bay Packers
(5) San Francisco 49ers
(6) New Orleans Saints

The top two seeds from each conference get a first-round bye, which leaves us with:

(3) Cincinnati Bengals vs. (6) San Diego Chargers
(4) Indianapolis Colts vs. (5) Kansas City Chiefs

(3) Philadelphia Eagles vs. (6) New Orleans Saints
(4) Green Bay Packers vs. (5) San Francisco 49ers

Games are played at the homefield of the higher seed (CIN, IND, PHI, GB). In your pred, say who you think will win, and also include your predicted margin of victory. A perfect margin pred = bonus point!

Happy New Year! Good luck, may the best man win.

Bengals 31, Chargers 21
Colts 28, Chiefs 24 (ridic hard prediction actually)
Eagles 42, Saints 20
49ers 31, Packers 20 (sigh....)

Packers game is supposed to be 10F at kickoff and drop closer to 0 by the end of the game. The 49ers will go from 65 degree temps to 10 in less than 24 hours. I doubt that has any real effect but w/e.

(6) San Diego Chargers > (3) Cincinnati Bengals by 3 points
The Bengals were my pre-season Super Bowl pick, that W17 against the Chief's practice squad was a disgrace, and the smart money should certainly be on "70 degrees and sunny" Rivers and Matthews having trouble making accurate throws/holding onto the ball in the low temps with possible snow showers.  Even so, it wouldn't be Wild Card Weekend without at least one road underdog pulling the shocker; if so you couldn't ask for a better target than an Andy Dalton/Marvin Lewis playoff team.  The Chargers have enough weapons to stay within striking distance, so I'll pick them to hang around long enough for a devastating 4th quarter Dalton interception to seal the game.

(4) Indianapolis Colts > (5) Kansas City Chiefs by 10 points
Great season for the Chiefs, but then again they went 0-5 against AFC playoff teams, including this very Colts squad only a couple weeks back.  I had plenty of doubts about the 2013 Colts (and paid dearly for them!), but heck, Andrew Luck just continues to win close games and he's always been very comfortable at home.  I see Indy getting off to a good start and the Chiefs staying competitive but not being able to mount a double digit comeback, resulting in a fairly close win.

(3) Philadelphia Eagles > (6) New Orleans Saints by 7 points
Any doubts I had about the Eagle's ability to play in cold weather and snow were erased during that second half thrashing of the Lions last month.  I'll admit it's a little weird that the Saints went from Super Bowl favorites (when it looked like they'd get to play in the Superdome) to significant underdogs against the winner of a very weak division, does make me wonder if everyone's reading a little too much into these home-road splits...  But nay, this Eagles offense should be able to spring enough big plays to edge out a win in what I expect to be a very enjoyable, high scoring affair.

(4) Green Bay Packers > (5) San Francisco 49ers by 3 points
Uhhhh, well, sometimes you've got to ignore your head and pick with your heart.

I'd like to mention again that game-time temperature for the 49ers @ Packers game is supposed to be -5F, and it will be closer to -15F air temperature when the sun goes down. We're also supposed to get near -50F windchills for the game, but I don't read too much into that.

Niners game was so stressful.  I felt they played better 90% of the time, but that the Packers played better in the times that counted - better redzone TD efficiency early in the game, won the turnover battle, the crazy 4th and 2 play by Rodgers...  But that all seemed the change in the last drive, with the Packers missing an interception and allowing Kaep to get outside on 3rd and long.

Anyway...

I've posted my thoughts several times on multiple outlets, but Octo summed up my thoughts nicely. That 4th and 2 miracle play by Rodgers might have defined the postseason for us if we had pulled that game out. Eerily similar game to the January 2008 NFC Championship game vs the Giants - same scoring sequence (2 field goals to start 6-0, Packers make it 7-0, eventually end up 13-10, 17-13, 20-17, final score of 23-20 with walk off field goal in harsh cold conditions) - you could kind of feel it coming as a pessimistic Packers fan but in your heart you were wanting to beat the 49ers so bad. It's a really tough loss.

tl;dr - We've lost to the 49ers 4 times in a row in 2 seasons, both season openers and enders - it's sucks.

Saints 29 Seahawks 27 (wow!)
Panthers 24 49ers 20 (impossible prediction, maybe a real defense can stop Kaep)
Broncos 41 Chargers 24
Patriots 31 Colts 28

Morlike Cincinnati FUMBLES, amirite?

Ridic games this weekend, I say that as someone who doesn't like watching NFL unless it's my team.  (Go Broncos!)

Take a hike. I posted that while still listening to other fans vent on sports radio and a relatively short time after the game ended anyway. I'm sorry I don't post much about your Bears blowing the coverage on an unfortunate and ridiculous 4th and 8 conversion for a TD, or the Chiefs blowing a 28 point lead with a (formerly) stone-wall defense. I don't like the other teams but I can empathize with the fans of investing 17 weeks of your life into a season only to see it go up in flames in a few short hours.

I've never been a part of a 28 point collapse (emotionally invested in a Packer game which featured this, I mean), but I've been a part of a 51-45 overtime loss where we came back from 17 down only to lose on a fluke fumble in OT. We've also lost a ton of home playoff games in recent memory, so the loss stings more for me personally. I can relate to Tyler in losing to the same team in the playoffs multiple times, it's bullshit especially when you feel you should/could have won.

Whatever, I'm over it now. Sorry for offending everyone!  :nesquik:

Jim: My response to your post was in the heat of the moment too. I just thought it was a bit ridic considering you guys have won a Super Bowl recently and are one of the more successful franchises in the NFL.

Official Wild Card Results

Colts 45, Chiefs 44
Saints 26, Eagles 24
Chargers 27, Bengals 10
49ers 23, Packers 20

After the wild card round:

Alec - 4
Lark - 3
QB - 3
Come - 2
Jimbo - 2
Ngamer - 2
octo - 2
removeNg - 2
Third - 2
Youse - 2
Neo - 1
Thingy - 1
wiff - 1

Tough round! Both 6 seeds won, and San Diego 27-10 over Cincinnati was especially surprising. Grats to Alec and QB on picking the 49ers by 3, and to Alec and Lark for being the only people to predict three games correctly.

Seems like everyone figured out the divisional matchups:

(1) Seattle Seahawks vs. (6) New Orleans Saints
(2) New England Patriots vs. (4) Indianapolis Colts

(2) Carolina Panthers vs. (5) San Francisco 49ers
(1) Denver Broncos vs. (6) San Diego Chargers

The Actual Divisional Results

The Denver Broncos defeat the San Diego Chargers with a surprisingly close final score, 24-17
The New England Patriots prove too much for Andrew Luck and the Indianapolis Colts, as another multi-INT game gives Brady and co. a 43-22 win
The San Francisco 49ers benefit from the Carolina Panthers' inability to push into the end zone, taking this one 23-10
The Seattle Seahawks didn't need any Marshawn insanity to take down the New Orleans Saints this year, winning 23-15

Standings

Alec - 7
octo - 7
QB - 7
Youse - 7
Lark - 6
Neo - 6
Ngamer - 5
Come - 4
fanny - 4
Jimbo - 4

Third - 3

Grats to fanny, octo, Youse, QB and Neo for picking perfectly, and octo, Neo and Youse picking Denver by 7 as well!

Championship Matchups
