GoldenEye 007 Tutorials
« on: January 26, 2014, 02:58:09 pm »
A few of us have made some pretty great tutorials lately.  This thread will serve two purposes;

1) To compile tutorials which are already made in a list
2) To discuss and assign levels to different people to make different tutorials

EDIT: Ogran's IL Maps have been merged and placed with each corresponding tutorial link.

------------------------------------

If you would like to call dibs on any level, just post here saying you will do the tutorial.  Anyone can feel free to make a tutorial for any level, if they have the time.  For instance, Jimbo likes the idea of making tutorials for 80-90 point times.  That's fine.  Anyone can do that.  If you plan on making the WR strategy tutorial for a level, post here so we don't have two people working on that at the same time.  It's not a bad thing if we have multiple tutorials of the same strategy, same level, since people will just watch the better one, and hopefully be able to pull different things from both; but it's good to keep others updated on what you're working on.

Hopefully once we get a really full list, we can maybe make a nice html page and have it hosted directly on the-elite.net.

Some levels, like Statue, don't need 3 tutorials.  One will suffice.  Archives SA/00A, Surface 1 SA/00A.  You can just note the differences in one video.

For instance, Jimbo likes the idea of making tutorials for 80-90 point times.

that's b/c they're the only ones he can do or follow  :kappa:

the sign of a good tutorial, is that after watching I immediately want to play it.  Was very tough doing something other than playing cradle A.

The average person shouldn't aim for WR strategies, as they're 1:10,000 completion chances anyway. Pretty sure the average top-10-wannabe player should aim for dat 90!

I guess that this thread is not the place to ask for a tutorial but I think Jungle really needs one since its such a technical level.

Control Agent tutorial

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uhz2PJCUt74&feature=c4-overview&list=UUsyJKuAZEWT7-GLaTM4AL9Q

I wasn't entirely happy with this, I don't like the noise from the mic and the whole thing is a bit scetcy but don't feel like working on it further.

It's probably useful though for a sub 4 control run, it's not listed on my youtube so you gotta use the link.

Thanks, Ryan. After I destroy streets, I am going to work on Surface 1 so this is great timing!

On another note, as we now starting to get a nice bunch of GE tutorial vids (including Goose's Agent run) it would be nice to have a page that contains the videos for the tutorials. Something that looks like the ranking page, but the videos for each time are linked to a tutorial. I notice we continually have a stream of newcomers joining, so it would be good to have this in place and make it somewhere visible on the main page.

That's *EXACTLY* why I posted it.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL THINGY

Okay, time to paste in the rest of my post, which I wrote before these comments started rolling in, because I knew they would pop up right away.

It's up to YOU ALL to keep this up to date.  It's a community project.  Someone has asked for a place to compile this new, interesting information.  I am linking to a site we've had set up for a number of years with the sole purpose of displaying this exact type of information.  If the information on there is no longer relevant or accurate, hopefully someone can take a bit of time to fix it.  Much better than laughing at the site because it doesn't have the information you're looking for.

SpeedRunWiki is also already linked from the homepage of the-elite.net.  If you update the GE page in a significant way and end up with an all-around good looking article, we can even make a post about it and/or make the link more prominent.  Anyone who knows about these things can modify the pages as required.  If you have usability issues with SRW, talk to me and I can see about setting up things like Mediawiki's new Visual Editor package.  There seems to be some major hurdle that people can't get over here, if we can find what it is, I'm willing to put some effort into fixing the problem.  Is it just the layout/appearance of the site? Organization? Content? Any ideas?

I will also add that there is a lot of great wiki-suited material floating around the GE board from the last 6-12 months.  I am thinking specifically of the Goldeneye Facts Topic here, but there must also be some good information in "Ask any GE question" and other various topics that are starting to fall off the first page.  Once these topics get older, they are harder to find for people who saw them, and impossible to find for any newcomers who don't even know they exist.  Proper placement on the wiki will make this data much easier to find in the future.

A good rule of thumb is if you find yourself searching for something on the forum that you saw posted before and need to refer back to, you should probably see if that information might have a home on the wiki.  The more you add to it, the more valuable it becomes.  Don't be afraid to DELETE irrelevant/outdated information, either.  Since a record of all changes is kept, we can always get it back later if we need.

Let me tell YOU a story then

--

We all tried updating the page with strats in 2005, spending hours writing strats daily instead of speedrunning (when we were in our primes I might add)

Sam Hughes got mad at us for our formatting and told us the way we were writing strats was unacceptable

we told him to fuck off and his little site burnt to the ground

the end

Get the content out there...use some effort but if someone doesn't like the formatting they'll fix it themselves.

There is a Visual Editor package available now.  Instead of using ***[[the==worst|syntax]]*** ever, you can just type in a screen that works a lot like Microsoft Word.  Would you want me to look into getting that installed?

The way Sam Hughes treated us years ago has ruined us writing for speedrunwiki ever.

We literally don't care about what you admins in your ivory tower want us to do.

We didn't get 10000 followers because of you guys.  We got it because of us.

Just go back and chill in the ivory tower chatroom and talk about NFL because we truly don't care what you or Come have to say.

FFS go hang out with your fiancee.  Like what are you even doing online still.

tutorials completely out of date, no links to video tutorials. ><_><

That's why the community should update it. Having a forum topic like this shows that people are willing and able to put the effort in to make a tutorial for each level.

The way Sam Hughes treated us years ago has ruined us writing for speedrunwiki ever.

Who cares what Sam did to your feelings year ago? He probably did/say what he did because you admitted to telling him "to fuck off" and thereby having the site no longer updated. And why was it? Because of formatting issues... I mean really, Goose? Sam wasn't getting paid to do any of this, much like no one here in the community is getting paid to write these tutorials. If Sam had asked for a different format, take 5 minutes and change it. It would have been better in the long run.

Now Flash is giving an option that allows to skip over the whole, "Hey, wrong format! I can't accept it!!" argument. And Once again, his free assistance in making the community better has just been thrown out as an option by no other than the same who threw out Sam's help, Goose.

The integrated software of having a Word editor built into a site to allow for easy tutorial descriptions and less hassle for those contributing would be an amazing addition to the site. Having tutorials for times in the 70-80 point range, 80-90 point range, and WR tutorials would be ideal. And if there isn't much of a difference between 70-90 point strategies, then increase the range to 0-25 points, 25-50 points, 50-75, etc. People who first view this site generally don't come in with 90+ point times without months of effort and strategy reading.

One more thing to Goose. You are directing hatred toward so many different authority figures within this community. You make personal attacking statements such as that one above about Flash hanging out with his fiancé. What business is that of yours? Why make a personal attack? Is it to get a rise out of this individual? Possibly to make them not post again? Then tell him that he shouldn't even be online still. You're implying that his wasting his time and life by being online because he has better things to do.

Let me direct you to a post you made about a year ago, Goose. http://forums.the-elite.net/forum/index.php?topic=843.msg382706#msg382706

Give that a good read, Stay True and (ノ◕ヮ◕)ノ*:・゚✧ Let It Go.

No one wants to read a big wall of text to learn how to play a level. They want to watch a video instead. Making a sticky thread with video tutorials would be a better idea than using an useless wiki owned by irrel admins.

Having a video tutorial with audio commentary would be ideal for ranges of times to achieve. The simple "wall of text" could be the commentary typed up for those that don't wish to watch a video or are incapable of watching one for (insert reason here). (i.e. Sound card problems, no speakers/headphones, are deaf or have a difficulty hearing, etc.)

No one will learn anything from a wall of text, it's a complete waste of time. This isn't 2002 where people wrote vague paragraphs in broken English with random TTs for a level.

See, the admins themselves want to create drama by doing these sort of things. And then we are apparently the bad guys. :nesquik:

Those that don't wish to watch a video???  This is like telling people to make a cassette tape for those who don't want to use CD's in 2014 (ok not the greatest analogy since CD's are irrel but I'm tired so this is what you get and you get the point).

Why in the world would you have tutorials for about anything besides the WR here?  (completion strats are fine on youtube for those that just want to beat it)  The overwhelming majority of the time those 70-80 pt times are literally the same strat but not as well done.  Sure there's nuances to squeeze that last extra w/e but if you stream, one is usually hanging around your twitch channel so you can ask.  If you're low ranked; those nuances really don't matter anywhere near as much as simply learn to strafe/shoot better.

Do you remember all of goose's posts or did you have that one of his bookmarked?

remove frigate is 100% correct

had a good lol at "sound card problems" btw.  (if that wasn't a troll post good lord...)

edit--I do look up the text version myself here and there actually so I see the point but if you stream, usually at least one good player is in there and they'll answer if you ask and videos do a better job of explaining things than a giant wall of text.  That's why you tube is a bigger site for gaming tutorials than gamefaqs.

edit2--"People who first view this site generally don't come in with 90+ point times without months of effort and strategy reading."

Yeah but what's the first vid they're going to click on?  oh right, the WR video.  I mean who's ever going to click on a 0-25 pt tutorial vid ffs.

It is true that text doesn't really cut it anymore.

I'm not sure how hard it is to create, but something just like the main rankings would be ideal. Video links to each level difficulty and set out just like the main page.

p.s I do like the idea of having a page that stores all of the useful info that Henrik et al finds out.

well said Wheat, I liked what you said about the 70-80 pt times. Also, many Good tutorials which exist also explain alternative strats, and the ones I have made try to accommodate players of different skill levels. It is nice for the tutorials to focus on World Records because players should be ambitious and push themselves, at least I hope this is the attitude aspiring players take.

Well... saying that written tutorials are useless is saying too much imo... There are people like me who are not great with the language... Tutorials in this topic are good, but I only understand like 50-70% of the things said in them, and I don't think I'm that bad at English, so other people really might not understand anything in the tutorials, especially when the player talks faster. However, Adam Bozon's LTK/DLTK tutorials are great with their annotations. You can pause them, read them carefuly, etc. Maybe writting a tutorial isn't worth it, but writting things in a video tutorial or something (subtitles, annotations) sounds like a good idea.

And about my opinion, I also think there should be links to the tutorials somewhere, but I would also include LTK/DLTK ones and, of course, PD ones.

The idea of having alternate tutorial videos from a perspective of 0-25, 50-75, etc is also to give people a way to gain points without too much stress over completing a run 1 in 100 times. Skill level is also stressed and could possibly be sorted that was as well. Having Easy, Medium, and Hard strategies for each tutorial video. Then have a descriptive World Record strategy for the best time possible.

Just throwing a level name out there because it was on my mind from a previous topic made, Aztec 00A.

Lets say they want to see an Easy tutorial on finishing the level. Describe the basic area where guards could pose as a problem. Walk them through how to quickly get to Jaws and an easy way to kill him without the risk of death. Possibly give the idea of warping the wall at the start to get back up, or just give direction on how to complete the level in 3-4 minutes. That is in the range of 0-25 points.

For Medium difficulty, describe the quickest way to move through the guards. Who to kill and who to skip. Health can pose as an issue with this strategy. Definitely describe the wall glitch. Don't talk about the glass trick. Etc, etc Target Time 2:20-2:45.

And for Hard, it's on the edge of WR strategy with using the glass trick, possibly skipping the body armor, but it's still relatively challenging. Survival is rare but nothing crazy and can still get potentially high points based on skill. Target Time 1:55 - 2:05.

The World Record strategy will be the "Yolo" strats that everyone calls them. Let's hope you have hours on your hands to go for the best times out there. Basically end with 0 bars left. Target Time 1:39-1:45.

Something like this can be used for almost all 00A tutorials. I'm not saying this should be done for each Agent level. Such as Dam Agent. You don't need a video of :54 explaining that you were doing a bad strafe line and resulted in a bad time. But for SA and 00A there could probably be a need or a want for slower time strategies.

Just a thought.

I agree when I first started playing I would watch vids of both WR and the lower point times just to get the idea of how bad a run can be and still get points. There should be multiple strat vids IMO.

Expert just please go away

I made tutorial videos because people in my twitch chat asked me.  Not for any reason having to do with the elite.  You and your ivory tower friends Ngamer and Come and etc have ruined everything for us.  We don't want to associate ourselves with you anymore and there is no going back.

Have you ever been in a relationship?  Broken up with?  You know that point where the relationship obviously still CAN work, but there is just too much bad blood between the two of you that it never can ever again?  That is the elite admin and the elite players.  It can still work, sure you are offering "free services" and whatever else.  But it never will.  Ever again.  We're done.

If anything the players will make their own strategy guide and tutorials page, completely separate from srw.

There's just so few levels that actually have differences from 0-25 to even say 90 without it being the same thing just done way slower.  It's not hard to figure things out like "hey maybe I shouldn't try running boris strat" or try the tank instead of this nade thing, and get a jap cart or don't use 2.x at first or "that looked really hard to do, so let's not at first".  Seems massively unnecessary for nearly all the levels but if you want to do it go right ahead.

Just get a page or a chart or something up somewhere with the vid tutorials linked and go from there.

(before you say statue, doing 00 without trev shot is a waste of time, why complete a 228/9 when you can get something better even on a crap run)

Really it comes down to this.  People will make whatever they want to make and nobody will grind out some tutorial they don't have any interest in doing.
