Goldeneye 20XX Countdowns
« on: October 02, 2014, 12:22:33 pm »
The popularity of the game is increasing, the apocalyptic era of the game is getting closer, the worldrecord/month'ometer is reaching record numbers and to get an untied you have to nearly donate your nuts or kidneys. But let's just start by the basic stuff, like:

Dam 53 losing initials - 5 places left
B1 17 losing initials - 8 places left
Depot 27 (sketchy TS run) worth 0 points - 5 places left
S2 55 (lazy 3rd-try-worthy RTA strat) worth 0 points - 6 places left

Feel free to post your predictions of when all of those four will have happened, do interesting comparisons/predictions on "what will happen first?"s, mention other levels in which the popularity effect is clearly noticeable, ignore this post and call me irrel, ignore this post call me irrel and go masturbate, you know, whatever.

Times that don't require a lot of skill and/or insanely long grinds are eventually going to be tied by a million people or beaten (Duel 53, Duel 17 and Duel 22  :kappa: will all eventually reach 50+ people because of that). New players are obviously gonna push the 0-point barrier upwards, since they now have tutorials and live help in twitch chats and new techniques and a billion other things that didn't exist 5-10 years ago.

Apart from those obvious improvements, I believe this surge in popularity will die out before we see any more "(457493 people)" levels, so the "popularity effect" will be noticeable in mid/low pointers, not so much in WR times. It's not like we'll see Frigate SA 1:00 - or lower - tied by 20 people, that'll literally never happen. L I T E R A L L Y. The heat death of the universe will happen before that. There's a lot of new guys playing the game, but my guess is that most of them will quit before getting really good.

Also, my point of view is based on absolutely nothing.

This is an excellent point. I'm sure other people have noticed, but the majority of the new guys are really only achieving common agent times.
(There are exceptions of course like JustinDT).

Regardless, I doubt many will remain to endure the pain-in-the-ass levels and 00A.
Embrace the grind.

Duel 53 will happen before the league is over. Four people and me will get it.

There's pointless Archives 59's too... also Streets 00 158 but this one is a bit further to go.

I'm tempted to say that the popularity growth of GE on the shorter term will mostly depend on Goose and Cosmo (and possibly another partnered streamer if s/he can grow really fast). Many new players emerged and some of them will quit (or lose interest/huge breaks), but, say, next year, if the game doesnt stagnate (I hardly doubt it), there will be even more new people than there was on 2014 total, and the former newbies will start to go for the harder stages (in a common sense...).

The higher tier world records may never be tied by tons of players, but eventually things like: S1 102, Depot 25 and Cradle 34 being tied by more and more people; a few guys tying the more difficult times etc will happen. It's unlikely that new players are going to come and crush it with less than a year, but today, with twitch, tutorials, more people to form peer groups, multiple PR/WR videos and direct computer capture (if you wanna analyze yours and the top player's gameplay, make comparisons) etc, the default will be to get good faster and faster, not like when the community was smaller, everyone was on dial up and you barely had a few people camcording/taping there gameplay.

Goldeneye 20XX, boys. No gaming community can escape it.
