I love the quick comebacks, especially on Dark Cavern. Interesting strat for River Run. It looks like on Sky Maneuvers you gained all the time on the landing pretty much. I'm guessing 2:07 should happen very soon with the River Run strat.

congrats Grav, what a run! really nice beginning and pretty clutch ending.

I liked the no hover waterfall recovery. I honestly think a tiny hover there might be more optimal and let you leave in a horizontal direction slightly faster. we really need a TAS done, 100pts obviously and saving every frame.

I'm going to let my thumb heal a bit and then have another crack at it

Thanks man. I have played with hovering there and wasn't sure if it really was faster or not. I think if you start from the far left side of the waterfall pit (when looking from above as you enter), then the space you have to accelerate might be enough that a hover wouldn't benefit you any... but I could be wrong. Either way it isn't a big difference obviously. And yeah I have a nice callus on my thumb already from my time grinding. This level is brutal on the thumb for sure.

Good luck with your future attempts!

Nice job on Touch & Go Luke. Unfortunately almost every other IL I have is nowhere near as optimized as Dark Cavern lol

You might consider testing Hawk for this level if you want to improve more... I haven't tested him fully on that level and I know he falls down faster than goose (but also moves forward slightly slower)

edit: nvm pretty sure hawk is worse after more testing

thanks grav. yeah I had a quick look through some of your older WR vids and thought your original time looked very improvable, so learnt the level and got 42 in 3 hrs.

I'm encouraged because we were neck and neck after th final platform - or close to it, I have to improve my landings before really shooting for an insane time because you gained so much just on your landing.

great run grav. I liked that 1st waterfall recovery a lot. Looks like you semi-built speed as you were about to clear the fall. I will obviously keep trying but might need a week or so recovery time for my thumb to heal.

oh yeah I failed a 35.75 on Sunday where I somehow clipped the ceiling after boosting at the bottom of the 1st waterfall... not sure how much time I lost but it appeared to be extremely minor... the beginning of the run again wasn't my best by about 0.2-0.3 but I had really good speed throughout the 2nd waterfall, hump and final 2 turns.

I like how we use a tiny hover for the last turn now, like 1 frame of hover just to steady our angle for the turn onto the straightaway. I can do the turn after the hump without hover but it usually just fucks up my angle / speed for the last turn. I think short hovers are optimal here. I still can't decide how to best play the 2nd waterfall recovery. a short hover like you seem to prefer seems good but I can also manage insane recoveries hoverless..

anyway competing with you for this IL is a lot of fun. thanks

The beginning of my run was pretty shit... I was like 0.2s behind your 35.81 at the big room. I made up 0.4s after that obviously to end up 0.2 ahead. I think you are correct in that the short hover for the last turn is useful, because that was definitely the best line to the finish goal I ever had. It's just really easy to do any part of the second half sub-optimally and lose a ton of time that you don't really notice losing, but I think we are beginning to grasp what good and bad actually looks like now. My best fail time before this run was a 35.71 (I got deducted 4 separate times by grazing against walls). Obviously considering my bad start, the sub 35.5 and beyond is there for the taking.

And yeah, it's been a blast trading times and pushing this level. I haven't really had true sustained competition in any of my games in almost a year and a half... so it's refreshing to have a sparring partner for once. Hope your thumb recovers quickly (mine is sore but not too bad) and good luck on future attempts.

Holy fuck. So the controller I have been using for all my N64 speedrunning in the last two years was also the one I used heavily as a child. I've probably put like 2000 hours of gameplay on top of what I did as a kid so this control stick is on its way out. I acquired a better controller and I just realized how fucking awful my other controller's stick was. Turning around corners is so fucking easy now... it's a bloody miracle I got any records with this pile of shit stick. I was completely unable to replicate the Up+right and Up+left diving that boss was able to do, which was my first idea that something could be wrong. Seeing how effortlessly Luke has been able to turn around the stalactite turn made me really suspect the stick. With this controller, my consistency should probably quadruple after I adjust... so watch out  ;)

If any of you have a controller that is even marginally better than what you use now, switch to it right now because it translates directly into how fast you can do this level and several others. 34 might be within at least my grasp seeing how tight my corners are now.

It's pretty clear I'm gonna have to relearn this level and probably every other one from scratch again... might be a while before I'm back to my full capacity. Gonna sleep on it now, I'll likely do better when I start the next session from scratch with the new controller.

The controller I've been using is the same one from AGDQ, and it's pretty worn out (worse than 5/10 but not too bad). I have another one which Sammy Rodgers let me take home, but it's hard to switch to it because I prefer the buttons on the one I'm using. I might have to open both controllers up and swap the sticks at some point - when I can't take tight turns anymore with the one I'm using.

I suspect the challenge with a sensitive controller will be the waterfalls, especially from 1st to 2nd but I could be wrong.. If it is, then this level is a lot like Train in Goldeneye, where a good stick is useful for the cars, but a worn stick is best for the locks. Having a stick in the middle ends up being optimal for most players.

Waterfalls are actually way easier for me now. Previously, my stick was such that I pretty much was throttling straight up or straight forward... unless I held the ever so slightest angle in between up and neutral. I would either go too much forward and plop right into the water immediately, or I would lose all my forward momentum. Now the diagonal thrust is easy as hell. Only thing I have had issues with so far is being too high up in the beginning part of the level, but holding the stick as hard as I can is starting to fix that.

I'm completely blown away by what you guys have been doing on Dark Cavern.  This is probably lame, but I have a sense of "pride" in how each of you have been performing, having vouched for each of you in different contexts:
- Grav - I put myself out there vouching for him being on the level with Elite speedrunners based almost solely on his PW skills
- Luke - Stood behind him as representative of the Elite standard of talent -- the type that could step in and challenge any game's record.

Battles like this are what reveals greatness -- a trait that transcends raw skill and accomplishment.

At this point it seems more like a war of attrition -- who's willing to outlast the other.  I hope to see the record change hands a few more times...

And Boss - that Bull's Eye run was rad... the target shots are impressive and the landing also very clutch.  Did you grind your time down a bit after initially getting the WR on this, or first time you hit the run?

I had tinkered with that route at one point but bailed on it after frustration with the tough landing approach.

Changing topics -- how much time does your up/down waggling gain you, do you think?  Is that Bull's Eye route more favorable for utilizing that method (because you hold a straight line longer)?  I'd like to get a better understanding of how and why the technique works (hopefully in terms of math/physics). Originally I had the impression that it was only useful for pushing past the gyro's top speed, but apparently that's not the case.

Grav - have you done any emu save state tests with this technique?

I did some rough emulator testing that was pretty inconclusive. All I know for certain is there doesn't seem to be a big difference between slight swaying and moderate swaying (but too much or none at all is bad). I think it still saves time before you hit the speedcap but it might be less time saved than when you are at speedcap. We pretty much just sway any time we can because it's not really hard and it likely saves at least minimal frames. All I know right now about total time save is it saves about a second and a half over the course of a 2 minute level... so it's nothing crazy outside of the realm of ILs pretty much.

About dark cavern, I'm pretty sure we will both see it to the eventual 34, as crazy as it sounds right now. 35 was crazy a few weeks ago and now we get them with ease. I'll go ahead and say 33 is not happening though lol. The competition has been really rewarding and I hope I get to see it in more levels (or Any%). I'm just glad the IGT for this game isn't whole seconds or we probably would have packed our bags the moment we hit 35 :p.

that's a good point about the in game timer. have you tried timing runs with a stopwatch alongside the gameplay and seen if the IRL timer matches the in game timer? if it's accurate I could see us using that as an indication of how close we could get to 34 and use that knowledge to decide if it was worth grinding for.. but having hundredths of a second is such an added incentive to this game and IL because of how tight it is and that there is no RNG. A game like Goldeneye I have said many times before would be absolutely horrible if the in game timer was to the hundredth of a second because of the randomness and lag.

I can see a 34 if I close my eyes and visualise the 'perfect run' which is my sum of best segments. I don't see much time to be saved in the beginning (up to big room) but can definitely imagine a run with a godlike waterfall entry (super low and risky) with optimal boosting to the 2nd waterfall and optimal exit boosting over the hump and 1 frame hovers for the last 2 turns, perfect straight line to the ending without the need to height adjustment. A run like that should give a 34.9x or somewhere close. If we can get the timer to switch from 32 to 33 after getting completely outside the cave we should be good.

I completed runs before the time I stuck with. I was failing low to mid 50s, but getting the far target was an issue with those faster fails. I think sub 50 is possible with more optimization though.

I think the so-called (by me) "waggle" is a great find for the gyrocopter, as it creates that feeling of generating more speed for yourself in a skill-based way -- roughly comparable to mini-turbos in kart.  Having your speed "gated" creates a different kind of feeling with focus on fluidity and momentum retention (most enjoyable, imo, when it's difficult or impossible to sustain full speed).

I'm glad the game measures time by the hundredths.  I think hundredths are good for short-format ILs, tenths even better (occasional ties but nothing like what we see on the GE tables).  I've mentioned before that I really disliked the rounding to thousandths on MKDD... I thought it diminished the emphasis on hundredths (the most significant digit for any mario kart game... the game can only make crude guesses at 3rd decimal place).  As for tenths, I recall Time Splitters using tenths on many of its challenges... some levels got effectively maxed until someone miraculously squeezed out an extra frame to round to a new digit.

I agree that tenths is probably the best, considering its balance between accuracy and precision. You still have to be a god gamer to tie an optimized record, but you don't have to worry about two runs being the same exact length in frame count yet having different in game times because of mostly random timer nonsense.

for meca hawk again:

have had some sub 1 pace starts but he trolled me on the 2nd pass... if i give enough fuck about this level in the future ill improve it. hawk is probably a tiny bit faster but his wide turn radius makes the chance of having a good second pass really low.

Late props to Grav for finally hitting the big one.

I have been playing casually a few times a week (with more WR attempts on velocity square than I'd like to admit), but obviously on a bit of a hiatus.  I'll circle back soon.  Been working on a full run for my favorite Android game, Gnarbike.
