Rocket League [Rumble Mode now available]
« on: July 27, 2015, 02:03:29 am »
... is amazing and everybody here should be playing it. It's a fantastic team game, and also just fun to play solo online. I'm sure the elite could get a ton of mileage out of this game if a few of you pick it up. Definitely one of the more memorable multiplayer games in the last few years.

I'm playing on Steam, if anyone picks it up let me know.

Sunk over 20 hours in to it already, most fun I've had with a multiplayer game in years!

Nope, PC\Playstation I believe.

Thread should have been made 3 weeks ago.

I'd consider it as it is insanely popular on Twitch atm, but insanely popular games are hard to get viewers with.  (Why watch me play it when a dozen top tier professional streamers are playing it for 2-20k viewers each.)

Difficult to call the relevance on this game right now.  At a glance it looks like it'll be around as a Tier 2 game on Twitch for quite some time.

I'm just recommending the game as a game. You should play it because it's a fun game, not because you're looking to get stream views. (Conveniently, you will probably also get some stream views and maybe expand your audience a bit)

If a few eliters pick it up, it'd be fun to do some private games. It's a really challenging game to be good at.

rocket league is the game everybody not in the elite is playing atm.

it is or was free on PS4 for those + users to d/l.

and ofc only neo is on my list who owns the game so that's why I don't have it.

The game is only $20 on Steam as well (if you don't have a PS4 with PSPlus to get it for free), which is super reasonable for a game that you might get a hundred hours out of, or more.

I'd encourage you guys to not wait for a Steam sale for it and just pick it up while it's still fresh for a lot of people. If you wait until the next sale to pick it up, I think you'll probably miss out on a lot of the fun, and saving $10 on a $20 game isn't really worth losing that IMO.

For what it's worth, I'm playing on an Xbox One pad, which works really well. I know some people are able to play it on keyboard with success, though, if you don't have a controller solution.

Strongly considering buying it for Steam. While at Quakecon I saw probably on the order of 1,000-1,200 people playing the game all around the BYOC. Looked quite fun

Would like to make people aware of http://www.twitch.tv/camgears, I guess there was a previous game extremely similar to Rocket League that has been out for 6+ years. This guy has been playing that game since near release and is a fucking god at Rocket League, amazingly fun to watch

Yeah, I saw some really good Rocket League players on youtube and it shows how bad I am (EDIT - turns out it was Kronovi, the guy who runs that stream you linked). I knew about the old game but I didn't know how similar it was to Rocket League, or how much their old skills would transfer.

I want to get better, though. The game is really fun when you do the thing you tried to do.

I just played this for the first time tonight.

Ho-ly crap. This game is FUN. It's simple yet clearly with a high skill cap. EXTREMELY tight and satisfying controls. Games are are a perfect length and matchmaking is fast. I won my first four ranked 3v3s, but I'm gonna be playing a lot more this week.

has 20.51 in steam $

after tax this game is like $21

steam won't let me use the wallet to buy it because the x cents over kills it

wants me to pay full price

doesn't have enough cards to sell to get over the $  and they aren't going despite being the lowest on the market

infil isn't on my steam friends list anyway

I bought a few games on steam to sell the cards for more than the game cost (there's a 9 cent game called voxelized that you get nearly double in card $ for) and now I'm 18 cents short with a booster pack nobody's buying (gonna have to break it next week probably), and one game that won't drop cards no matter what I do SO CLOSE YET SO FAR AWAY.

had to find you via third, amused to see his 6 games vs my 911 (DAMN YOU BUNDLES).

I only recently picked up a solid gaming PC, definitely will look into getting more games soon. There's at least half a dozen I took a look at and almost bought

Rocket League is really fun, by the way. It has a super high skill ceiling but is pretty playable from game #1

first game online  tried out no ball cam
score all 3 goals for my team
2nd one tied the game with 5 sec left, was an undefendable long goal
3rd one wins in OT

doesn't know you can save replays

mostly downhill from there

welp

but my 100+ ping held up lag wise in game so in for rocket league action

kinda mixed on the camera, no ball cam was much better for me if I could find the ball, but there's sometimes I have absolutely no idea where it is.  (arrow doesn't show all the time)

It's best to just click it on briefly so you know where the ball is, and then when you get lined up for it, you can turn it off.

I like to keep it on most of the time but I'm slowly realizing I can line my shots up much better with it off, so I'm trying to do about 50/50 now. And anything super high I turn it off and try to follow the shadow.

Didn't get to play with wheat yet because whenever he's been on I've been in another party of 4+ with work friends or busy with something else, but soon.

Been watching a ton of pro videos over the last while and I'm just so impressed by how versatile they are. They have great ball control, great expectation of direction on aerials (ie, where it will bounce and where to be), great prediction on their opponent's clear attempts, and they just never miss shots on the ground. Every ball that gets to them is redirected towards the net, or towards a teammate/other important space, with velocity and precision. If a stray ball comes to them, they don't kinda just wave at it or throw it to the corner, they angle it precisely towards the goal or a teammate, almost without fail.

It's really cool to go through this myself and go from just starting out, to understanding the basics of positioning (offense/defense, cycling), to trying to reliably get velocity on shots, to trying to make contact with basic aerials, to going for more advanced aerials, and STILL know that I'm so far away from good players. I like trying to break down how to score on good defensive teams, because I know the best players would have no trouble, and when you sit back and realize all the stuff you would have to do to always be in position and never miss, it's such a skillful game. I went through this 15 years ago for fighting games (and so now, all the fighting games I learn I kind of take that process for granted), so even with all my experience in gaming, it's neat to have to "learn to walk" in a new game, as it were.

I don't know if I'll ever aspire to be world class at the game, or grind out lots of practice away from real matches, but I'm still having fun learning and getting noticeably better every day I play, so until that stops I'll keep going. I feel my strengths are understanding field position and space control (from years of sports and videogames around positioning) and correctly predicting player tendencies (both on my team and on the opposing team). I feel I'm fairly average at "hard" aerials (I'm going for a lot of them recently so I can figure out the mechanics), but I'll score some nice goals here and there. My weakest area is dribbling, missing shots under the ball (ie, shooting high or whiffing), and wall shots (which I still don't really understand).

I got my Veteran rank yesterday too, yay.

I need an XBOX controller, but one of my longest subscribers (20 months now) said he'd buy the game just for me to play with him.  Yeah yeah talk is cheap, but considering I'm the best in the elite at both Splatoon and Hearthstone, I think it's a lock for me to not only become the best eliter at Rocket League within 2 months, but also become pretty good, like Tier 3 or 5 on a global scale before the end of the year.
