I still play a fair bit. Nearing Master rank. I play a lot of unranked with friends, so my ranked ratings aren't that great (somewhere in the 750-800 club for doubles I think, but I feel I'm quite a bit better than that). I feel I would level up faster if I played better players, but I rarely meet online players who are markedly better than me (just because of where my rating is at). Definitely there are thousands of people online much better than me, but they're in a skill bracket that isn't matching me up with them.

My weakness is still missing "easy" aerials, although I'm improving there.

The most important thing is that this game is so much fun I can't put it down. It's easily my game of the year so far, and it's some of the most fun I've had with a videogame in the last 10 years. I want to get better at it (so I can hang with Eric and company; right now they're better but I don't think I'm so far behind I can't catch up), but even if I never get better than I am now, I'll still keep playing because it's just THAT much fun.

An update for RL comes out in two weeks or so, and that's when Season 1 begins. That will reset the rankings (I think to zero?).

If we held a 2v2 tournament(5 game series per match) no team in the elite could beat me and eric.

I think infil and I would give you guys a good fight.

fyp, it's cool but that's a fluke--it just happened to get deflected into where you were going.

Also, when are we gonna play one of these days?

If he shoots it lower, then yeah, I don't save it. I was driving down from the top with the intention of making a save, though (I tried to predict the most likely path for the ball and end up there), and if he shoots it into where I am, that's not my problem!

It's no different than pre-emptively jumping for a high, hard close-range shot (and being right). Sure if he shoots it somewhere else, you get scored on, but it would still be a good save if you made it.

It appeared to me the shot deflected upwards off your teammate into you.   Saving that ball was a fortuitous sequence of events.

It seems to me that the original deflection would have been good enough to send the shot high (however there are only a few frames where one can judge this).  Noob opinion alert: This gif is quite literally my only exposure to the game, and I'm also not sure how the crossbar works.

Seems like fine skill play either way.

Maybe not regarding RL as that's been the price of it on every site the last two months but it won't get lower for a long time.

Guess I have to get back to playing this at some point.  Being essentially last on that list is not a good look for me.

edit--I *think* it's slightly cheaper on greenmangaming.com if you use the 20% off code on the main page NWYEAR-20PERC-WTHGMG.

though if you care about a buck or so, you're in the wrong place after you spend a ton of hours playing the game b/c you're having too much fun.

No one cares about this game.

It died back in like October, maybe earlier.

99% of the time you're safe taking Goose's opinion as the gospel truth on any given subject, however Rocket League's continued popularity is part of that all-too-rare 1 percent.

- 50,000 people are online actively playing it on steam at peak hours each day making it one of the 10 most popular PC games currently, something it's been for the last 6 months
- that's only the half the story as it's also been extremely successful on PS4.  between the two systems combined the game peaks at more than 100,000 players every day, and it's entirely cross-play between the different versions so you could play with that entire userbase
- it's going to launch on Xbox One and Linux and Macs in the next couple months and introduce another fresh audience
- it's one of the top 5 biggest sellers of the steam Winter Sale and has consistently been one of the 10 best selling PC games every week for the past 6 months
- the developers continue to support the game with new modes and maps and items and (optional, cosmetic only so no one gets an advantage in-game) DLC
- just the Eliters listed above have played more than 300 hours of Rocket League in the past month alone

It's a thing called "confidence."  You should learn it.

Big update on the way!

http://steamcommunity.com/games/252950/announcements/detail/92688778901574720

- RL's first "season" will end with the launch of the next patch sometime in Feb (prob around the middle of the month) which means a full ladder reset and the start of Season Two
- players will be rewarded with a Bronze, Silver, Gold, or Platinum crown based on how high they finish in Ranked (it will use your highest score across all formats so if you're plat in 1v1 no need to worry about grinding up 3v3 as well)
- in addition to the normal item drops you get after every game they're adding Uncommon items that will only drop once every several games, playing more often increases the odds they'll drop for you

That's all they're saying for now but on the 22nd they'll give another update re: the big changes to competitive play they've got in store for S2.  Including perhaps a new map and mode/game type?

Good stuff, I just wish they had the ability to reward your ranked points PEAK instead of where you finish at the end of S1.  As is everyone will grind their way to 1001 (or another cutoff) and then refuse to play Ranked with their friends for the next couple weeks as they can't afford to hit a bad streak and fall back to the 900s.

Season One is now ALL OVER!  The new patch is being pushed to servers and Season 2 should be fully live by later tonight on both PC and PS4.  Lots going on in the new season, full deets here

http://rocketleague.psyonix.com/patch-notes/

But some highlights:

- ranked points are dead, from now on you'll be tested with 10 "placement matches", based on your performance you get sorted into 1 of 12 skill divisions.  play well enough within that division and you'll be eligible for a promotion, but lose a bunch and you'll soon get demoted
- three new maps have been added (Underpass, Utopia Retro, Double Goal), they're not in the ranked/competitive rotation but can be played online in their own separate playlist, like Snow Day
- Wasteland, though, has been added to the competitive rotation
- you can now officially Report any car that's causing problems in your game, that will send a full text log from the game to the devs who can then issue a suspension or ban
- PC players are now allowed to go beyond 60 frames per second if their graphics cards can handle it

Awesome stuff!

Not sure what to make of those stats, at least my stats are all incorrect (I've played/won a lot more games than it shows there, according to my in-game RL stats)... dunno if it's using some archived version or what. I've won a little over 2550 games and scored over 5000 goals (and I imagine hotshott's stats are also higher than the card shows). A little weird that it can't find/use the latest version of our stats?

notable moments:

-playing 10 random games against Gambit (pro player) and getting rekt 10 games straight. (he's just retired from professional play)

Lots of cool stuff happening in the land of RL right now!

* the first ever Free Weekend is underway, for the next 48 hours anyone can try out the game just by hitting Play in steam.  it's also on sale for 40% off (lowest price it's ever been available for) so if you're having a good time you can but it and keep on rolling

http://store.steampowered.com/app/252950/

* a new mode launches on Tuesday called Rocket League Hoops, the football pitch will be swapped out for a hardwood court and you'll need to punch the basketball up in the air to get it into the big baskets that will be set up on both ends.  to me it seems like the focus will be on aerial play so this mode might make for better games with veterans then newcomers, but should still be fun to mess around with either way.  here's the trailer to give you an idea of the new gameplay

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcT706B4eZI

* we're still getting Elite games together just about every night, last night for instance Thingy and I had a blast doing ranked 2v2s.  we made a highlight of the best game of the night, you could check that out if you're curious as to why we're still playing this all the time sevens months later

https://www.twitch.tv/snorge/v/62087009

(sadly the video quality's not great, Thingy accidentally lowered the quality too much so Infil could watch)

A huge Rocket League update arrives this afternoon, I'd recommend giving it a look!

* available on Mac and Linux for the first time

* new game mode called Rumble that uses Mario Kart-style powerups, here's what it looks like in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iz-dQifR7Q

* there's a total of 11 different powerups and they can all change the gameplay in pretty drastic ways if used right, check here for short clips showing how each can be used http://www.rocketleaguegame.com/news/2016/08/rocket-league-rumble-september/  (scroll down the page a bit for that)

* party chat so you can organize your friends easier and all get into the same game faster

* 10 different slot presets for how you want your custom car to look, including being able to pick different options when you're on Orange instead of Blue

* crates will drop after some games, if you pay $1 for a key (like TF2) you can open them and unpack the special/unique items inside.  all key sales will increase the prize pools of big esports tournaments (like Dota) so you're supporting both the developers of the game and the pro players

* player to player trading of any items or keys with anyone else on your friends list

* two new normal maps and one new crazy map that's shaped like an octagon

* improved matchmaking that will make games against teams of friends more fair

Should be great!
