*~ Request for a NintendoSpy/Arduino/ Controller Input ~*
« on: October 22, 2015, 08:12:22 pm »
So I'm re-interested in adding more gimmicky information to my stream, and a controller input seems to be the best bet. Thing is, soldering is way over my head and I'd be willing to pay someone to neatly put together an N64 extension cable spliced with an Arduino card so I can display controller inputs when I play. If anyone is willing/able to do this, or knows anyone who can, could you reply to this thread/ shoot me a PM? Would appreciate it greatly.

~Cheers!  :pimp:

Why is this thread locked? I'll unlock it so people can reply.

I'll make it for you if you send me the parts and schematic.

I didn't lock it, strange. :s I don't know exactly what parts I need or what the correct schematic looks like. The page I keep being redirected to online is some GitHub page with a million files on it. :/

I looked up the project and ordered the parts I'd need to build one.  If it works when I get it together, I'll update this thread.

Hey guys, time for the promised update.

I got the parts in the mail today and put this together for TroubleClef92.  Here's a video:

Is there anyone else who would want one? I could make more.

Okay, yeah I can make more of them for people who don't want to make their own.

But let's at least wait until the first one gets delivered and make sure it actually works for him.  I sent it in the mail on Monday but it has to go from USA to Canada so it might take a while.

Reviving this topic because I have become interested in an input display. How much would I be looking at moneywise?

This topic revival has also revived a few thoughts/questions towards this gadget.

As I appreciate Scott for creating this for me, and sequentially everyone else, I fear it's stopped working for some unknown reason. It used to work with GoldenEye all the time, and then one day just randomly stopped. The controller input just doesn't register anymore, with any game that's being played. I never changed anything to do with the program. I'm not sure how often (if at all) the program updates...

Thoughts?

I don't recall the specifics right now, but I think they were somewhere in the range of $40-$50, plus shipping.  I was able to get it lower by buying 8x of all the parts at once when we had a lot of people sign up.  Maybe someone actually makes one of these commercially by now?

I barely remember the specifics of how this worked...

Does your controller still work when plugged through the device? If not, the wires have probably become detached and you would need to take the whole thing apart and reconnect them.

I think it registers as a serial device (e.g. "COM1"), are you seeing that part show up still when you plug it in?  If not, you might need to reload the firmware program onto the device.  Yours was the first cable I made and I'm not sure if I drilled a small pinhole for access to the reset button -- I know I did for everyone else's.

If your controller still works and the device still registers as a serial device, it is possible that one wire has disconnected from the circuit board but not from the rest of the controller wire, you'd probably need to break the thing open to find out.

Easiest fix is if it is just a software thing. I photos saved of what the internals look like, so you at least have a record of what is in there if you need to pop it open. The case is glued shut.
