KART TOURNEY UPDATES

* specific times for all Kart matches agreed on ahead of time

In favor of

* Jones is this something you're willing to take charge of?

Yes, if I come and for the matches that happen after I arrive (still unsure of at this moment - similar boat to Lovins)

* display the real time running Kart totals on the stream itself

Seems like a no brainer, DK alreasy has it implemented, not sure any other feedback is necessary

* go the full non-shortcut route on Wario and Royal (so basically the only SC left would be the Rainbow jump)

Might as well just make everything no SC. SC rules are so arbitrary in the first place, might as well just rip off the bandaid.

* the 1 projector downstairs + 3 TVs set up somewhere so all Kart rounds can be done at once

In favor of everything being played on projector as it provides maximum viewability for spectators and provides documentation in case something contentious arises. The one ammendment I would make is the possibility of adding an extra CRT or two (via splitter) to the coffee table for players who prefer to play on a screen without lag. I know this had a pretty big impact on my play last year (where I spent time preparing on a lagless CRT and then had to jump directly into competitive play without having time to adjust to the lag). However, if the setup of this is infeasible or creates additional issues, then I'm fine with everything just being played on the projector.

* change the track order to Mushroom, Special, Star, Flour (seriously, flour?)

Track order makes no difference to me. Keeping tracks in order within the cup seems like it would help keep up pace of play (don't need to read off of a list to remember where to go next).

* someone should provide live commentary during Kart rounds

Against live commentary in the same room. Don't care otherwise. I kind of like being able to hear the game sounds + competitor reactions, so I'm kind of leaning no commentary at all. Maybe a compromise would be to do a restream with added commentary including some of the participants. I'd even be willing to participate in something like that.

Checking in.

-Fine with 3v3 games in hoops. I will bring my shoes so I don't role my ankle again.
-Fine with eliminating MK shortcuts.
-I think mixing up the cup tracks is a good compromise. I'm always in favor in randomizing everything, but for sanity's sake, just mixing the cups up is cool. It breaks the monotony.
-Always in favor of non-LTK GE matches. I believe I've made my point clear in last year's recap topic.
-Curious what the usual participant number is for ping pong. Is it more/less than 16? As a definite not-top 8 player I would still like to play, but I'm willing to sit back and just be a warmer-upper for the top 8.
-Simultaneous Kart matches are a neat idea. I'm cool for doing that.
-Streams of other games (like Mgay and me playing Counter-Op PD) are a nice idea too.
-Nightmare overflow games for those not in the "original 6" who want to play.

I am still planning on attending! I haven't made flight purchases yet, but it will happen very soon: I'm waiting for my next credit card statement to see what my miles are at. I will be flying in and out of Richmond. I will need to leave a day early to get back to KC for wedding prep. I will tip generously anyone who's willing to drive me to the Richmond on June 10th.

Also, since NG is roping me into semi-coordinating this, it would be nice to hear back from:

Alex, Soph, Joshua Nash, TroubleClef, Austin Perroux

as to your interest in participating in the kart tournament. Just a yes/no/maybe for now would be sufficient.

I've just assumed that Boss and Edeen would both be playing. Can you guys confirm?

Along those lines, I would like to hear people's thoughts about how they should be seeded. Boss is a defending champ (2012) and Dan finished #2 in his last appearance (2013). We already have two confirmed top 8 players not returning from last year (Dan B and wheat). I think it would be appropriate to give autobids to both, but where would you suggest they be seeded? EDIT: Correction, Dan finished 4th and wheat finished 9th. Assuming 22/23 player tournament there would be 10 autobids, so the original point still stands. The number of autobids would change if the number players changes +/- 2.

Another consideration is, if Zoran shows up (still likely at this point?), should he be given an autobid based on his proven track record at the Euro meet? The reason I bring this up is in consideration of balancing the R16 groupings. Case in point, last year the strength of Dan and Jake was unknown so they came through the playins. This ended up causing some uneven groupings in R16 (where 3 of the 4 finalists were grouped in a single R16 match). I know stuff like this is not completely avoidable, but if you have a known quantity, which Zoran very much is, I think it would be prudent to attempt to mitigate such occurrences if possible. Frankie is the other potential wildcard here, the difference is that Zoran has the existing resume.

Don't mean to derail the overall VA thread, should this be moved into its own topic?

Checking in:

I'm up for playing everything I can and participating in everything I'm able to. I have absolutely no knowledge (or experience) of shortcuts in MK64, so of course I'd prefer not to have them, as others are suggesting ( :nesquik: ). If playing lagless on CRTs is an option during matches, that'd be preferable, but only if it isn't too much hassle. It's not like having a bit of lag is going to severely mess with my no-skill in Kart compared to the giants here.

Would also like the exact PayPal address to send my lowly Canadian dollars to the Weathertons. OP is too troll. :P (I know conversion to US is a factor; sending $150 CAD would be like a good $50 US  :kappa: )

My flight's been booked for a little while, just have to pay the room+board to the Weathertons and arrange what I'm bringing. I'll be bringing my laptop to obviously record any gameplay I do, when I'm able to. Should I bring a console at all just in case? I'm guessing there'll be plenty there.

Any rules and layout/whatnot of tourneys that I need to know would be appreciated.

Freakin' hype.  :pimp:

Lots been going on right now on my end, been really busy. Money is a bit of a concern at the moment, as well as vacation time at work. I might not use my holidays and get paid out for them at the end of the year in cause I get a severance when our store renovates.

So It looks like I won't be able to make it this year, sorry guys

Alright well this officially sucks. I'm also concerned about Boss, who's been totally MIA the last two weeks or so? Alex's absence opens up a spot for Dennison though, to try and put a positive spin on it.

Alright really good replies the last couple days, great work everyone!

Mgay - that's cool, I updated the sheet to put you IN for Kart this year

Jake - I do agree that all the players should get a vote, but doing it at the house is too late (in the past everyone says they want all the rules and setup posted ahead of time).  the good news is it sounds like we've got a strong consensus on almost everything at this point so if there's still some setting that's heavily debated in a couple weeks we could make a new voting topic to hash it out

Jones - I'd say our stance should be that anyone returning who made last year's Elite Eight gets locked into the top positions, then we fill in the Next Best players behind them to reach 10, with everyone else earning their spot in the Play In.  so for this year I guess that would mean
Jones
Jimbo
Jake
Lovins
PYL
Trent
Stinson

Zoran
Boss
Edeen or JT

That seems pretty solid except that who should get the 10 spot is up for debate... but I guess we can wait for confirmations from Lovins and Boss and Zoran before we get too hung up about it.

Trouble - we could always use another N64 if you find room to pack it.  as for rules I'd say to expect 3 player LTK (or very low health) in GE, not having to learn any SCs in Kart, and just playing with your favorite character in Smash.  doesn't look like there will be anything "official" happening on Monday/Tuesday so your tournaments for the week would start with the Kart playin on Wed aft

I think the chances of myself, Lovins and Zoran all coming are probably pretty low, so I don't think it'll be an issue.

I think a much more likely scenario will be having to change the number of autobids from 10 to 8 or 12 due to the number of players.

Hey guys, nice to see some lively discussions going on here.  I skimmed through the posts since Jon's big one so I may have missed some points but here are my thoughts anyway:

* GE tourney should return but be 3 player action, everyone set to -4 health, body armor removed using Gamesharks - adds a little variety to the usual 1v1 pistols LTK setup

Lovins, would you be willing to run this?  My other concern would be if we'll have a reliably working Gameshark to make it happen... paging Woll/Jimbo.

Gamesharks are no problem - I should be able to bring 2 working Sharks with me as I think I have in previous years.  Honestly I'm okay with either LTK or -4, but -4 obviously only with no armor.  I know we talked about some other ideas last August like randomized spawns, but I'm guessing that doesn't matter as much to people if we're doing 3 player?  And I'm assuming we're still sticking to Pistols and not anything more exotic?

Alternative thought: what if instead of N64/Gameshark we did this tourney downstairs on Drew's emulator?  He hooks his computer up to the shell of a 64 so everyone would be able to play with their regular controllers with zero lag even doing 4 player, and he could hack in the code to permanently take out body armor so we wouldn't have to fiddle around with sharks at all.  Plus we could stream the whole thing, I think it would be a big hit.  GE players, does that some like something you'd consider trying, or would you rather stick to the normal LTK N64 tradition?

Alternate alternate thought: if we did get the emulator going we could try streaming some Perfect Dark as well, I'm thinking specifically of how cool lagless 4 player Challenge 30 action would be.  Hmmmm, I'll check with Weatherton to see how possible all this would be before we go making any promises.

I don't know about a tourney with this but I absolutely am up for playing more on the emulator (including Challenge 30).  I had fun with it last year but I barely spent time with it.

* a Smash 64 tourney NEEDS to happen

Alex said he wanted to run this- are you still up for it?  Sounded like some people wanted to do 12 rounds where everyone picks a different character every round while others preferred to stick to just their 1 main, so that will have to be hashed out.

Assuming we would still be doing this even without Alex, I'm absolutely worthless with any character outside of Pikachu so I'd prefer not having to pick different characters every round.  Death kick all the way baby.

While  I would prefer to stay in the autobid for the tourney this year due to my placing last year, I don't have a problem if I have to get bumped out to make it fair. I should have done better last year anyway lol.

If we're looking for votes on the kart tourney, I prefer no shortcuts for any track and changing up the order...with either no RR at all or at least not as the last track. I like the idea of something new/different to break up the monotony of the same old format and races of this tourney.

Anyone in the area who wants to stop by for a day is more than welcome, I'd recommend wearing a swimsuit and bringing a beach towel as jumping in Lake Anna is quite the experience.  If it's nice out there'll probably be lots going on outside between volleyball and swimming and cornhole and basketball so plan for that.

If you want to stay for dinner that will be fine as well, just something along the lines of a $10 donation to cover your costs should be good.

Just to make sure everyone knows...

If you are planning on coming for only part of the week, whether that's 1 day or 3, please give the exact dates you plan to attend, at least a few days before the meet starts. The hosts need to know numbers for food preparation.

Jones is trying his best to make it in for the end of the week, if he's in and Lovins isn't able to make it we could go with (based on everyone's latest availability)

Locked In
Jones
Jimbo
Jake
PYL
Trent
Stinson
Zoran
Boss
Edeen
JT

Play Ins
Frankie
Weatherton
Dennison
wiff
Ngamer
Mgay
Trouble
Austin vs Thingy

That would be a pretty solid setup IMO, if more people are able to free up their schedules in the next month and make it (like say Liz/Hutch/Layne) we could easily extend that out to include a third play-in round.

I'm a bit confused as to the setup of the tournament. I'm just playing for fun of course to see if I can advance at all, but I'm unsure as to what the whole "play-in" thing means, how rounds are organized, etc.

Play-ins are generally one round where you do all 16 tracks and the top two finishers advance to the second round.

After that there are 16 people left and you do a few 4P rounds, the eight people with the most points move on from there and then it gets srs

Then the play-in-play-in is a round where we make up the rules on the fly.  Kind of a baseline check that you have a pulse and know how to hold the controller.

Can't believe it's a month away already. Lots of plans have changed since I talked with everyone last. I would like to get updated.
My plan is still to drive the Durango. I know Dennison has been hitting me up on Facebook (Thank you!) to try and keep me updated, along with Jimbo, but my schedule recently has been insane so I've fallen out of the loop.

Has the entire MN crew abandoned me? Am I still still picking people up along the way? The Durango with the N64 in the back would be a terrible thing to waste cross-country. I was hyped for Mario party 2 battles.

I still plan on giving rides from Dulles, like previous years. I would like to still hit up NYC but it's not as much of a priority as it was a few months ago.

What's the plan guys. I would like to know.

Thanks!

Also, is it listed anywhere how many people are in the MK64 tournie this year? I see myself as seeded 9th and as much as I hate it, since I finished 2nd last time, I can't really argue about the names above me being better players. (Except Jimbo - f that guy)

It's going to be pretty intense this year. Lets hope I can knock Jones out again like I did in 2013.  :pimp:

I look forward to seeing all of you again, and meeting some people for the first time.

Boss has not signed in to his boards or rankings account since April 17, and I'm concerned something bad happened to him (I'll call him literally later today). Clemens and Alex are both out from various things in real life, mostly work. Dennison getting a ride from you would be perfect, but I think only PYL is really unaccounted for at this point for rides? He usually goes into Dulles, but Drew Weatherton has gotten him in the past, I'm not sure.

Troubleclef may need a ride back to the airport on Saturday (Dulles), if you can be arsed to do that Dan. I will probably end up leaving the lake house decently early on Saturday this year.

NGamer's list isn't an official seeding list, so I'd take it with a grain of salt. There are people on that list that aren't even 100% confirmed attending...

The most up to date information re: kart tourney can be found in the google doc that's listed in the first post of this thread under the "Kart Setup" tab.

In a previous post I made, I solicited feedback for how to seed returning players (you and Boss) and potential new players with a proven track record in other tournaments (Zoran). No one has really provided anything substantial in response to that request. The difficulty with seeding is that it isn't necessarily a 100% objective reflection of skill and coming up with a list that does is essentially impossible. The best you can hope for is starting out using last year's results and then amending that with reasonable discussion which hopefully yields some sort of consensus.

Your specific case is somewhat difficult. If Boss plays, his last finish (1) outranks yours (2) so it's difficult to seed you higher than him. So the first step is coming up with an accurate seeding for Boss. Do you seed Boss above any of the winners since he last played (Lovins, Me)? Do you seed Boss above anyone who has finished better than Lovins in the last 2 years (Stinson, Trent, Dan B, Jake, Jimbo?). Do you seed Boss above anyone who made the finals last year (me, Jimbo, Jake, Dan B)? If Zoran comes (who has won a "major" 4p vs tournament more recently than Boss), do you seed Boss higher than Zoran? If you answer yes to all of these questions (not saying that I am - just coming up with a rough lower bound for Boss' seeding) then you have potentially all of these people seeded higher than Boss:

Myself, Lovins (if he comes), Stinson, Trent, Dan B (if he comes), Jake, Jimbo, Zoran (if he comes)

That lower bound scenario would make Boss a 9 seed and you would then be seeded lower (not saying that should necessarily be the case, but this provides a somewhat plausible line of reasoning). In reality my feeling is that Boss, as a reigning champion, should be seeded higher than that but exactly where is more or less just a guess. If Dan B doesn't come, I think sliding Boss into Dan's 4th place seed is fairly reasonable. Also, you can reference Third's trajectory in terms of weighting a 2nd place finish from 3+ years ago (he went - 2012:2, 2013:7, 2015:12). On the other hand, you can argue that your previous finish was 2nd and that anyone not finishing in the top 2 since then has no right to be seeded higher. Essentially, you can come up with arbitrary but reasonable arguments that support just about any seeding. This is all fairly premature until the field is more or less set (the status of myself, Dan B, Lovins, Boss, Zoran etc. all need to be confirmed before any meaningful decisions can be made re: seeding).

I no pick you and Mrs. up?

I see myself as seeded 9th and as much as I hate it, since I finished 2nd last time, I can't really argue about the names above me being better players. (Except Jimbo - f that guy)

I really enjoy the thought you put into this. Slow day at work? :)
I would agree with you on everything you said. I know the list isn't final and I also know that between all of us, you can't really come up with just one sufficient list. I don't mind at all where I am placed. My thought process went like this...

*Hey I wonder where I am on this list... damn it 9th! Who's ahead of me?*
*They are better, better, better, yup better, gah!, damn it, ok yeah this year is going to be really tough.*

I would also like to throw into the debate that my placing 2nd *might* be considered out of the norm in relation to standard deviations away from the mean. Heightened by a sample size of... 2.

I really look forward to it this year. I respect you immensely Jonesy but I hope you don't 3-peat. ;)

Sorry I haven't been talking to anyone over the last few weeks. I'm still in as far as VA goes and still have that week off.

* specific times for all Kart matches
Sounds good.

* display the real time running Kart totals

Sounds good.

* go the full non-shortcut route on Wario and Royal
Sounds good except I think RR should also be full route then too. That way bolts/boos aren't as powerful and driving properly around the normally boring part of the track will matter more. It should be more or less a longer version of TT in that way (chomps are like the cars on TT).

* the 1 projector downstairs + 3 TVs set up
All real matches should be on projector only, no lagless TVs allowed.

* change the track order to Mushroom, Special, Star, Flour
Sounds like a good idea. I wouldn't mind even seeing tracks completely randomized for each round for some variety.  Sweet 16 would have a random order, then elite 8 would have a different random order etc. Finals maybe go back to classic order though?

* someone should provide live commentary during Kart rounds
There's enough rage and player commentary as it is.

* GE tourney should return but be 3 player action, everyone set to -4 health
I dunno if there's gonna be much interest in this with so many GE guys having pulled out. I'm not even interested in participating in this. I think just a few casual matches would be enough for me.

lagless 4 player Challenge 30 action
I wouldn't mind trying this just for the heck of it if it's doable.

* a Smash 64 tourney NEEDS to happen
I know Alex is out, but if there is some smash being played I wouldn't mind playing a few rounds of it.

* there should be exhibitions/cool stuff happening on the live stream between tourney matches
This would be sweet imo. I've been working on SimCity runs (fastest to 600k population without money trick/debug) recently and could show off that during a downtime for example. I could maybe do a 30 challenge run too with a little bit of derust prior. I think if other players have something they want to show off GDQ style when there isn't a kart round going on, that would be cool.

* display ETAs of the next big event on the stream itself
Seems like a no brainer. I hated not knowing when matches were gonna be from a viewer perspective over the last few years.

As far as my seed in the kart tourney, I wouldn't make it too high. I haven't really done 4p kart since AGDQ 2015, so a 9 seed might be pretty reasonable considering everyone with a higher seed has played it more recently. I think getting to the finals would be a really good showing for me if you need a guideline to go by for seeding. I would say Zoron should be ahead of me if he's won a big tournament more recently.

To Dan, I'm still fully interested in riding with you to/back from VA. I have no plans to fly so please include me in your travel to VA.

Sounds good Boss. It will be you and I driving and we will pick up Dennison in MI. It sounds like Thingy and wife want to join us which will be a nice 5. I would like to know if Clem is 100% out. Thingy what's the plan? you're welcome to join, I thoroughly enjoyed you and I driving back from VA a few years ago. (Waffle House!)

I'm pretty excited about this.

Would anyone want to play Smash Melee, and the amazing fan mades: Project M, Smash Legacy, and 20XX?
I can bring those. I can bring a lot of fun board games, too.

I don't know where you got that idea, I haven't spoken to you about this at all and I haven't told anyone else that I was looking for a ride from you. In fact, I have specifically stated the opposite more than once.

Sorry, Dan, but I am not looking for a ride from you right now. I still plan to drive but I am scoping out some detours on the way.

Don't trust people telling you things about my intentions or beliefs, it seems to be a constant theme lately for others to invent them.  If I was looking for a ride I would post publicly in this topic so that everyone could see it.

If my plans changed and I suddenly needed a ride, I know you would try your best to step up (Everyone: Dan is AWESOME!!).  I would post here and also contact you directly.  Just don't trust anyone else making up my plans.
