The Lost Topics From 2004 + Compiling Elite History
« on: July 04, 2016, 01:39:13 pm »
For those of you that have browsed the archives for GE/PD, you might have noticed that a large portion of the topics from the 2004 era are missing. The site was hacked at this time, and the majority of the topics were never transferred to the new boards. By using the Wayback Machine, I was able to visit older versions of the-elite main page, and surprisingly, many of the old forum links still work and have been archived.

Goldeneye topics January - December 2004 https://web.archive.org/web/20041207033426/http://pub20.ezboard.com/fperfectdarkelitefrm11
Perfect Dark Topics January - December 2004 https://web.archive.org/web/20041208194127/http://pub20.ezboard.com/fperfectdarkeliteperfectdarkelite

Pages 1-7 cover all the topics in '04. You start in December and can work your way back to January.  Although all of the topic titles are listed, some unfortunately haven't been archived, but most will work.

For older eliters that were actually around back then, enjoy reading really old topics that you probably haven't seen in a long time. You may even find your own introduction posts or controversial debates you participated in. There are many classic discussions that capture the mood of the era. I recommend it to anyone that's a fan of elite history.

There also seems to be a lot of information missing from January - May 2003 as well. I recently found the original topic Trent made about the Statue Trev Shot Strat and the classic topic debating Steven Zwartjes’ Aztec 131, but both are nowhere to be found in the archives.

It’s important that this place retains as much of its history as possible so the complete story can be told. With that said, another topic will be made soon in order to catalog these lost topics so we can reference/have them all in one place. There are a lot of monumental posts/history/turning points that are missing. They’re floating around the web somewhere they just have to be found. Boss’ original Dam Agent 0:53 post in the World Record topic is another good example of this.

If anyone is interested in working on this themselves, a good way to start is to search “the-elite.net” in the Wayback Machine search bar, click on any given year/day of the month and then click the “Goldeneye” or “Perfect Dark” forum links on the left, middle side of the page.
If there’s a way to transfer this information to the existing archives on the modern board that would be great.

Yeah, sounds great. Do you care if I move this to General Chat instead of FFA?

If anyone wants to whip up a parser to grab all these and merge them into our forum database, let me know and I can work with you to get you started.

There are a lot of user accounts called deletedprofile.u -- if you look at the URLs of their saved avatars you can see the actual account names they had. Another task would be to reset all those.  Then link those accounts to posts where possible.

Nice find, Lark.

Spent some time at work going through all GE PR topics, including LTK-stuff. Some topics have sadly not been archived though. But I was able to find PRs that haven't been submitted yet. Will PM Woll with all the missing LTK times that needs to be added to the WR database. Before I do that, I'm gonna work my way through all PD topics.

Again, thanks for finding this.
