Which of the following activities do you consider DEGENERATE?
« on: August 15, 2016, 10:50:42 pm »
People do a lot of degenerate things in society, but I think I've listed some of the MOST degenerate activities people, particularly on this forum, may regularly engage in.  Do you agree?  Disagree?  Which of the listed activities do you consider degenerate?
"I want to be defined by the things that I love. Not the things I'm afraid of, or the things that haunt me in the middle of the night.  I just think that, you are what you love."  Taylor Swift, Daylight.

its hard to make an objective call here because what "degenerate" behavior is directly correlates to individual subjective moral values. In my opinion, something degenerate is anything directly detrimental to positive societal progress. So, I'll organize your lists of behaviors according to this definition:

Quote
Vaping / Vape Nation / Vape Culture
Getting/having tattoos, obsession with tattoos
Dressing every day only in jeans & black t-shirts
Being literally autistic - not knowing how to behave in social situations (barking, stating obvious/annoying things)
Obsession with anime, spending money on anime, watching/reading anime
Watching pornography daily/regularly
Playing video games for hours every day but not streaming/sharing it
Not knowing how to cook anything aside from frozen pizza pockets/frozen mac & cheese
Defending or justifying BLM/ISIS/other terrorist groups on social media/forums
Listening only to one genre of music (metal, rap, hip hop)

these are NEVER degenerate. just because you personally dont like doing any of these things, or think that people who ARE doing these things are less than you in some way, does not make them degenerate, according to my definitions/morals. Generally, none of these things have the potential to seriously harm any other person or society, other than the person engaging in the behavior.

Drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, doing drugs
Not following the news/being aware of anything happening in the world

these are POTENTIALLY degenerate.
1. If you are abusing any mind altering substance to the point where you are negatively affecting other people's lives then yes that is without a doubt degenerate
2. By my own definition I couldn't put this one in the 'ALWAYS degenerate' category even though it was my knee jerk reaction to. If you seriously lack a basic understanding of current events and huge societal happenings then you are part of the problem, but simply not knowing something(s) isn't necessarily directly detrimental to social progress.

Quote
Supporting Hillary Clinton in the 2016 US Presidential Election
Rejecting popular culture [music]

these are ALWAYS degenerate.
1. Hillary will without a doubt be a fucking horrible president if her entire political career is any indication and will only harm global and domestic politics
2. Doing this is a good indication that you are a narrow minded person outside of just musical opinions, which is one of the worst personality traits someone can have

All of these are very degenerate.

This one is more of a consequence than a choice or opinion. As someone who still has difficulties interacting with people, I feel empathy for those who actually struggle understanding social cues.

Playing video games for hours every day but not streaming/sharing it
Seems like a grey area to me, it depends on how much impact it has on the person's life. But the thought of not sharing AT ALL, not even telling some friends or small community about this cool thing you did in a videogame sounds very degen indeed. It depends on how much this is outweighed by the sense of personal accomplishment.

I wouldn't say popular culture, but more of a variety thing. Some people don't listen to most stuff of nowadays (because they're crap), but will enjoy several genres.

Not following the news/being aware of anything happening in the world
Maybe. Some people are oblivious to the news but spend their time building an insane skillset. Others spend their time on typical useless crap like smartphone games and social media. In that case yeah it's pretty dero.

Calling "critical thinking" when you pick a point of view, assume it as the truth, then have a discussion about how everything else is wrong / ineffective by default. (it's Brazil-related btw)
