I used the database to compile a bunch of data regarding the number and type of world records in this history of the-elite GE speedrunning. I may have made an error on a couple data points because I had to manually grab all of this, but the trends should be very accurate either way. Each data point was taken on the first day of each month.

Also, here is the spreadsheet:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JQuOS8fU5iV4NRGRQmWss3s_bNt963sbwEIyI9q90pk/edit#gid=538589958

Maybe Icy can incorporate this data into his monthly info posts  :)

Awesome data, thanks for taking the time to do this, Grav!

Some basic points and trends that pop out: Total World Records is always gradually increasing as the player base increases of course, but every time a super tied up WR pops, there's a huge dip. The Boring 4 as they are now, Depot 0:25, Runway SA 0:22, and interestingly, the pair of Archives SA/00A since they go together are the big causes of them. When Archives hits 0:15/0:53/0:53, a total of 127 WRs are going to poof! It'll definitely make for a notable spike down.

Untied World Records is as expected, and I noted on them before. They'll always be shifting up and down as new insane untieds get achieved and others get tied. 12 as the lowest amount during the DCRI era also makes a lot of sense. Cool to see the whole graph of them!

World Records Per Player (with a WR) is also an interesting stat because whenever a big untied occurs, it brings the average down for a lot of players who has that TWR, but it's also eliminating the count of players when they lose their last one. Likewise in the dinosaur era when everything was untied, there were very few players who had any, meaning that those who did would be a high average. Interesting stat, ha. Not surprisingly with the Boring 4 these days, there are a ton of players with at least 1, though at the same time, easily accessible WRs bring the average up. Archives 0:15 wipes out very few people off the total with a WR, and the rest and all of Archives 0:54 holders have others, so we'll see another drop sometime soon.

Players with at least 1 WR is similar to total WRs. Every time a huge collection of TWRs gets poofed by a new cooked untied, a ton of people with that as their only one gets wiped out. Like before, the Boring 4 being achieved, Depot 0:25, and Runway SA 0:22 are all those big dips. And naturally, the dinosaur untied era is low, with the Boring 4 era being quite high. Archives 0:15 will actually only wipe out Suprioten, Swompz, Phazon, and Sternis.

Very cool stuff! Makes me even more keen for Archives 0:15! :v

Cool stuff Grav - if you (or anyone) ever need an export of a certain set of data from the WR database you can let me know (PM on here is the best way to reach me) and I can pass along a spreadsheet or something along those lines so that you don't have to manually enter data.

Conclusions:

With the obvious exception of levels with only a couple times worth points, the distribution seems to be this:

This is mostly expected but still pretty interesting. Most levels have a time that everyone of a particular general skill level settles on or aims to settle on, whether independently or not. Once a player reaches the next skill level, they usually end up playing all the way until they reach the next peak.

Absolutely fantastic work, Grav! Loved everything!

On the rough distribution of points, it's very interesting to see that trend as a lot of it makes sense with how our points system works. There's no need to cut a couple seconds for little to no points unless you can reach all the way to a new significant skill level, so there's definitely a strong case of "settling" on times. I've put emphasis on those before in my point sustainability guide in my thread (top/high/mid level recommendations). With the nature of being measured in skill by 60 different levels, the time spent elsewhere is much more worthwhile in terms of ranking up, and is part of the argument on level rotation vs level grinding.

It's super cool that the data follows along with these phenomena!

Alrighty, I created two documents of my own from this; one following Grav's template, and another showing my time played as exact as I've been able to figure out or manage.

Exact times played: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1DegtkFNHVryqobKR7fTqL4IyzwfsGV8RZ_i0RJ8RDA4/edit?usp=sharing

Truncated times played in Grav's template: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1R_qXRVt0uT_cVIncc9F6s0jNImq9zYU-0CVjELJCR_k/edit?usp=sharing

Icy - that'd be a lot more interesting data if it had dates.  Most of those seem like they were done before 2005, let alone 2012.  Hard to compare across eras without dates.

Data points are each month. EDIT: I cut off all the years before 2012 since there is incomplete data.

Peak activity:

1. September 2014 (1058 PRs)
2. August 2014 (1057 PRs)

These statistics are incredible. Nice job mate. Looks like I was way, way off (didn't think the activity in these years would be 10x as much as the most active years from the old eras).

There were a lot more PRs in the old days than shows on the graph, but the data since the current rankings is probably accurate.

It's interesting how much lower the activity has been in 2016 compared to 2014-2015. I knew the number would be low, but not by this much. An average of maybe 700-800 down to about 300. I guess people just have been pretty busy with real life stuff these days or something.

I meant a complete/thorough database of old PRs with dates, I don't believe there is such a thing. Only peoples' current PRs where gathered when the new rankings system was introduced in 2012, almost all of them without an associated date, because PR histories were not tracked until then. Exceptions are all old WRs (which were added by AZ and Woll I think) and PR histories of a few enthusiasts who kept track with private lists and added them to the new system. I assume you used the database of the rankings system, so the PR count pre-2012 is highly incomplete.

Example: http://rankings.the-elite.net/~Arnold+Navilite/goldeneye/history

EDIT: I alone probably did more PRs in 2011 than the graph says for the entire elite. Stuff like improving Statue 2:36 to 2:34 and then 2:31, but still.

Oh I forgot one other data thing I did so I'm going to consolidate it into this thread as well

Sample size was 39 respondents. People who took the survey were asked to rank each level on their own criteria.

Total cinema seconds watched:

   GE - ~2 minutes 30 seconds
   PD - ~8 minutes 45 seconds

Most cinema:

   GE - Silo (14.5s)
   PD - G5  (70s)

Total number of pauses:

      GE - 35
      PD - 600 (Six Hundred)

Most pauses:

   GE - Silo 00A (5)
PD - Attack Ship PA (42)

PD levels with more pauses than Silo 00A: 40
PD levels with more total pause time than Silo 00A: 15

-All stats are from current WRs from both games.
-The lowest pause total was taken from PD records with at least one tie.
-G5 middle cutscene was included in PD totals and no ending cinemas were included in either game.
-The Duel was not included in either total.
-LTK and DLTK were not included.
-GE quickpauses were not included since they don't stop the game timer.
-Yes I know PD is still the more complex/deep/skillful game.

Reminder that I used to never pause in LTK. :nesquik: It's pretty lame how powerful it is.

Fun fact: there is only one required pause in all PD ILs, which is Deep Sea PA when pulling out the Backup Disk. Goldeneye requires minimum 29. Now which game is better? :nesquik:

Maybe ranking real time instead of game time or introducing a reasonable anti-pausing rule could help PD (D)LTK. Excessive pausing ruins all speedrunning feeling and is unwatchable imo.
