Steven Zwartjes PAL-tape from ~1998 (now online)
« on: October 02, 2016, 06:36:36 am »
This arrived in my mailbox two days ago:

I got the tape from Greg I on the Kart forums: http://www.mariokart64.com/cgi-bin/yabb2/YaBB.pl?num=1426348970/0#4

Wheat asked him to send the tape to my address (thanks wheat). Since it said "Goldeneye 007" and the fact that no Zwartjes GE videos are available today, we thought it would be best to capture it for historical purposes. I was very excited when the tape finally arrived.

My initial reaction while opening the package however, was disappointment. It was only a two hour tape (had naturally hoped for a 3 or 4 hour tape). Furthermore, it turned out that most of the content consisted of Starfox.

4 GE runs were on the tape though, and these 4 runs now have the distincion of being the oldest, surviving speedruns of Goldeneye (even beating Mike Martin's 1999 videos). These Zwartjes' runs should be from 1998, possibly early 1999.

The Runs:

Train Agent 1:34 (Best time 1:27) - Complete with RCP90-strat, 1.1, aiming the brakes/locks and look ahead ON. 1:27 was the WR in July 1998.

Facility Agent 0:55 (Best time 0:54) - pretty decent run.

Facility 00 Agent 5:51 (Best time 1:14):kappa:

Caverns Agent 1:10 (Best time 1:07) - notice the different route after spiral. This run had a horrible start and ending.

The tape stopped at 1:44 hours. Apart from 4 minutes of Wave Race and these 4 GE runs, the tape consisted of Starfox gameplay only. Of course one had hoped for more GE stuff, but it's better than nothing.

You can download everything from the tape here: http://thengamer.com/Zwartjestape/

Thanks again to Greg I and wheat.

According to sources it was overtaped by the 1:10 Caverns.

Sick you can tell he had easy top 10 potential today, look at that fucking line of locks he took on the train run with R aim, also that cavs route needs to be explored, I barely remembered you could go left there :kappa:

Also I think he got bad trev but turned it into a good trev somehow on that fac 55 :o

Very cool! It's neat to see the game played from so long ago before the game was broken down more to a science. I doubt anyone would have expected players still going nearly two decades later.

Some of the gameplay choices are...odd? :nesquik: Like some stuff is easy to say it's obvious in hindsight, but R-aiming brakes is silly.

Figured as much but it was worth a shot.

Now we gotta find all those tapes sent to expertgamer in someone's attic.

Do you even know what 1.1 controls are like? :kappa: :nesquik:

There is a fine irony that videos from a VHS literally dug up from nearly two decades ago is still better quality than Ace, Clemens or Marc with all current technology available to them in 2016.

Those ancient runs are really amusing. I particularly enjoyed the position he chose while destroying the locks and the full-lookup at the end of Train. It's fascinating to see the alternate routes and strategies people were using back then.

Also, kudos for having perfectly acceptable video quality in the year 1998 that would meet today's standards.
Embrace the grind.

To be fair, recording a VHS in 1998 was much easier (not: cheaper, better) than capturing these days imo. You just bought a recorder and tapes in any supermarket and the shit worked out of the box, whereas digital recording means ordering the right splitters with cables and some FishyCap device online, hope that the driver works on your OS, then configure deinterlace mode, signal and cropping in your SketchyRec program.
