The Everdrive Problem (TEP)
« on: February 09, 2017, 05:55:21 am »
Lately there has been talk about the dangers of an Everdrive and the possibility it has been, and will continue to be used for GoldenEye speedrunning. In fact, our senior most rankings administration, Jimbo, believes that Jimmy Bauer's Statue Agent 2:18 was likely Everdrived. I am not making this up. You can find this yourself if you search in Discord as well:

But what is truly concerning is how the Everdrive can be used on more than just manipulating Frigate hostages:

Lastly, we have seen top players in the past signal about getting an Everdrive:

And proof moderators admitting this would become a big deal in the future:

How is this not a major concern when people have been talking about it for over a year? People who have been speedrunning this game for thousands of hours, obtaining incredible WRs are now at risk to losing records to these potential cheaters. Unfair! I have only seen bad arguments against this, such as "well people who have been Everdriving in the past will continue to do it!". These do not address this problem at hand. If we want to restore the integrity of the rankings, I recommend the following steps:

1. Remove certain levels. Jimbo agrees (again, nothing in this conversation has been edited and you are free to search it yourself on Discord):

2. Require all WR attempts to be streamed with a webcam showing a clear view of the player's hands, controller, N64 and and TV. I am aware of the backlash this will create, but it is crucial if we want to have accurate rankings.

3. Any previous grandfathered records can be subject to scrutiny and will be removed if the proof moderator(s) see fit.

4. Require all WR attempts to have paint-ball mode activated.

Ace

Mates, this is fucked up, I don't know how are you even considering having Everdrive as something legit. I've been out of the discussion so got a few questions:

  • What exactly can you manipulate right now? Besides hostages, FR, stuff like that, can you also manipulate guards reactions, auto aim, etc? E.g: make the first guard on Dam to have the best animation possible everytime
  • Is it REALLY impossible to spot when someone is using Everdrive? Can't you spot different framerates and weird stuff happening?
  • Can we tell whether a cart is phisically everdrived or not? Like you get a crack in the back of the GE cart because you opened it, that wouldn't be allowed

Just throwing some ideas:
  • As proof for a any WR or PR you'd have to provide at least X minutes of your session. That won't work 100% obviously because a) you can get a PR in one of your first tries, b) shit can happen, e.g you get two good FRs on statue in a row, you can't assume it's everdrived, could be just plain luck, c) one can edit the videos and show a fake session. Still could work for some levels.
  • Can't we do a blind test with like 5 very similar sessions and tell a group of people to spot which one is everdrived? Maybe we can find out something (I don't know, level starts faster, guards animations are not so random, whatever)

The webcam streaming idea is the best option IMO, but it's a backslash for sure. First person I think of is Boss.

This is a small community based on respect and trust to each other, so actually by just saying that Everdrive is NOT allowed AT ALL from now on, it'll be good enough for some time. Then obviously if some newcomer gets three Statue 90+ within a day we have to ask for some extended proof. The thing is, if someone sits for hundreds of hours to play a 20yr old game to get some records which will probably get less than 50 views on Youtube, that person will very likely follow the rules, IMO.

Where's the joy in faking? I've got records in this game, DKR and SSBM. In DKR, there are no fake records, and it would be almost impossible to fake a record. In SSBM on the other hand, you can now mod your game to allow the use of the C-Stick in 1-player mode. This makes every single event easier to do. Event matches, Home-run Contest and Break the Targets get immensely easier. No one has addressed this so far in the community, and that's a huge problem.

Activity is quite low at the moment, but I'm sure some of the more recent records utilize the c-stick for aerial attacks. Of course, modding will allow for other small changes as well. This is just as bad as changing enemy damage, hostage escape chance, weapon drops etc. in GE/PD.

I'm probably gonna limit my off-stream sessions from now on, since that's what can be done for now.

I can just fake an everdrive All I would have to do is put my everdrive inside of my ge cart so showing a webcam of my n64 is pointless just making it harder to cheat does not stop a cheater. Also does anyone actually know how to make a rom that has best rng everytime? aside for henrik wodahs and a few tasers

This is the right way to think about it, imho.  Removing certain levels from the rankings or requiring all WR attempts to be livestreamed feels like an overreaction.  This isn't the Olympics or the Tour de France or something where real-world consequences are at stake, even though we all care about the integrity of the rankings.

If certain levels are more susceptible to manipulation than others, why not just create a third rankings category?  There could be Time (All 60), Points (All 60), and Points (Skill-based levels only; levels less likely to be manipulated) or something like that.  Removing levels from the rankings altogether seems disrespectful to players who spent hundreds of legit hours grinding Frigate or Aztec or others, and would certainly discourage people from playing these levels, which are still fun despite the luck involved.

Reminder that GameShark has been a thing for much longer. GS is way cheaper (like 1/8th of the price) and it's trivially easy to create simple codes like FR position, doak position, all objectives completing...

Why would someone wait until 2012 / 2014 to cheat with an unnecessarily expensive tool?

The best anti-cheating agent in 2017 is;

- streaming regularly as an exhibition of your skill and capability in game
- attending meets and playing in person as an exhibition of your skill and capability in game
- interacting with the community and sharing in their strife of bad luck and struggle to achieve WRs, showing your humanity and relation to the game

So think about some top players who do not do any of these things.  Those are always your most likely targets for cheating of any kind.
