The Clemens Computer Project - Raise $200 for a Dell Refurbished
« on: February 14, 2017, 10:53:31 pm »
I recently ordered a refurbished Dell computer with an i5 processor as an upgrade for my father, from his Pentium 4, Windows XP machine.

The price truly chocked me - a mere $195 CAD.  Considering I paid Aziz at the local new-Canadian mall about $150 cash for the previous Pentium 4, Windows XP machine back in about 2012, this was a truly affordable upgrade.

This got me thinking, why don't we get a similar computer for Clemens?  This would improve his stream quality and maybe even get him in Discord.  There are many similar Dell Optiplex 7010s for about $179 USD, which would be a massive upgrade for Clemens, who is probably using an even more outdated computer than my father.

THE CONCEPT

Raise $200 USD to purchase a new computer for Clemens.  I can be the arbiter of this project, and you can send any donation to https://www.paypal.me/rwhitegoose.  Once we have $200 raised, we can move on to buying the computer.

THE COMPLICATION

Fact of the matter is, even if I mailed a computer to Clemens' doorstep, he still wouldn't bother to set it up.  This has been proven several times, as people have literally mailed him capture cards three times and all three times he couldn't be bothered to set them up.  I feel as if Clemens' would make some kind of excuse like "well I wouldn't spend money on it and I don't want others spending money on it, so out of principle I'm not going to use it."  On top of this, it's unlikely he would ever install OBS, Amarec, Discord or Teamviewer, so it'd be a pointless venture anyways.

THE SOLUTION

Assuming we can raise $200 to purchase Clemens a new computer, I will order a refurbished Dell and have it delivered to an American with adequate technological literacy.  Someone like a Grav or Wodahs or whoever might be able and willing.  That person could then set up the computer, install Discord and set it to "load on startup;" install Teamviewer, so that we can log into his computer remotely and set stuff up for him, and install anything else that might be needed.  We could even install a PCi capture card so that Clemens couldn't accidentally unplug his Dazzle and stream from webcam for years until corrected.

This person then must also be willing to take the computer and physically deliver it to Clemens.  Again, mailing won't work as there is no guarantee Clemens will actually set it up.  Perhaps someone who is attending SGDQ could do this, as they'd be in close proximity to his house.  I could perhaps order the computer and mail it to the SGDQ hotel where the elite could perform the necessarily installations, and then visit Clemens to set it up.

--

While we all agree that it is unfortunate it has to come to this, we have to accept reality.  Clemens always makes excuses like "I'd rather spend $3000 visiting Jess, so I'm not gonna buy a new computer for $200;" which is only the start of his inane excuses to come.  However, if this works, we could vastly improve the quality of the elite by getting Clemens into Discord and improving the quality and bitrate of his stream.

Feel free to share your thoughts or donate, very curious to see how this is received!

Laughed my ass off reading through this. As hilariously troll a thread as this is, it IS a great idea and I'd be interested in contributing some cash if others are willing to as well.

If the plan becomes well thought out and clear as to the execution, I'll toss some money where I can. Interested in seeing David's reaction to this.

Just in general, I never understood why anyone wouldn't spend a little bit of money when you have a hobby where you invest so much time into. It's a shame that other people are thinking about paying for someone elses computer just so they can enjoy their performances better. Especially when the person could easily afford it but simple choses not to.

The simple answer, Cara, is because Clemens gets the job done just fine:

- He can stream easily with his current setup;
- He's used to this computer which he's been using for ages;
- His stream quality poses no issues for the proof moderator;

So why should he bother upgrading? Sure it's nice for the pleasure of all the viewers, but it's unnecessary, taxing and the cons outweigh the pros for Clemens himself. It's similar to asking doctors why they don't generate 64-bit images for their MRI scans. There's no need to, mate.

except that they shouldn't be accepted as proof, and some haven't been though not enough.

once we stop accepting them he and others in similar situations have no choice but
 to stop using their comfy setup that they've been used to and have to get off their ass to make it acceptable
 or
 to stop having their new times ranked
sexy, this

Fair argument - but that's another story. I was only stating the reasons for why Clemens probably doesn't care.

Almost willing to send him my "old" (not old at all and can stream fine at high quality etc much better than his current computer) also to buy Ace a fucking capture card that doesn't crop 30% of the screen because he isn't willing to fix the issue himself either. But then again why should I be an enabler  :smirk:

I thought I made a post here stating how a refurbished computer should be donated to Boss instead. Clemens' already has a watchable stream. Boss can't even stream, and given the type of records and quality of play he deserves to have one.
