CRT required for competitive times?
« on: March 05, 2017, 07:02:14 am »
I've been watching GE Streams for a while and I've been inspired to get involved with the rankings. Even though I've started off small with Runway 23 and Dam 53, I would like to get more competitive in the future.

My question is, what is the major benefit of a CRT TV and will it be required if I want to aim for competitive times on the rankings? Currently I'm using a shitty LCD TV that I got 5 years ago, but am I putting myself at a disadvantage if I keep using it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

LCD TV's need to change the signal from analog to digital. This causes a delay between what the n64 sends out and what the tv shows. It's pretty small, but on more complex stages and on stages where you need to react to things you'll bleed time.

Do you think it's still possible to achieve Dam 53 and Runway 53 without a CRT?

Yeah they are fine. Simple levels where you don't have to worry about reacting to guards etc will be ok cause your brain gets used to the delay.

Most of the easier wr's will be possible with LCD. Trust me though, CRTs are way easier to play.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_lag

some extra info but Karl pretty much hit the nail on the head in his post

I have to say tho, I played some on a digital monitor that had analog input as well, and although it wasn't as direct as CRT, it was decent enough for casual speedrunning like I used to do. Keep in mind that if you decide to play on LCD to turn off all image enhancing processes as those will add to the lag. Most monitors/TVs have a "game" mode where this is done for you automatically.
