Greetings! (And Capture card question?)
« on: March 19, 2017, 09:49:46 am »
Hey everyone,
I finally got my hands on a cartridge!
(No excuse to take a few years to get one with internet ordering I know, I know)

I've been lurking on GE Streams for quite a while (Especially Goose) and I figured since the game was so damn optimized it would just be discouraging to come into it after so many years of optimization and not even remembering how to move with the right hand and aim with the left.

I haven't really played this game in probably 15 years but I figured I'd join and even if it's just as a personal challenge, try to get some times at least close to the leader boards in the upcoming months.

Anywho, looking forward to the long road ahead to catch up to most of you! So now for my question.

I know my times won't get to the point where I'd need verification for probably a while, but since I did use to stream a lot before, I'd like to start streaming regularly again but I'm wondering what type of capture card you guys are using to record/stream. I have a Roxio Gamecap HD Pro.. Which is great if I would stream from HD consoles.. But can't do anything with my N64/NES etc.. Anyone have any tips on if I should try to get a converter box? Or would it be cheaper just to get another capture card?

Any suggestions on decent cards would be great,

Thanks guys!

This thread: https://forums.the-elite.net/index.php?topic=20940.0 should have everything you need to get started. Be sure to stream so we can correct bad habits before they're too ingrained!

Update:

So I found a Comp -> HDMI converter, it works fine, so I can now use my capture card to capture my N64, the only issue is that the image seems to be pretty dark once it passes through the Capture card, I can try to bring up the brightness on the capture card settings itself but it's still kind of dark, I can probably learn to deal with it when I'm playing, but would this effect the credibility of the videos when it comes to verifying my times when I start hitting the leaderboards? If so, I'll be able to get a decent card that doesn't convert anything, but it will most likely take me a couple months before getting there anyway.

I'll most likely stream tomorrow afternoon since I'll have more time to test the settings and stuff.
(Keep in mind I'm very new at this... And I'm not even sure how to hold my controller during some parts of some levels haha)

I'll probably be grinding a couple easy levels on Agent :)

Hej Spaq

Need to see a sample of the video in order to make that determination :)

So I did a test stream with the setup I curently have this morning. I made 2 highlights solely to have something to show what type of darkness I was talking about. I managed to make it better on normal levels like on this example: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/131234641

But levels like Jungle, start of control, statue, are very dark. I did manage to make it ALOT better tinkering around with the settings, so I don't think it's going to be an issue as much as when I first asked about it, but just incase you can have a look.  (See Jungle example here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/131233999)

Thanks :)
Saw a couple people from the community on the stream this morning, and I'll most likely stream again tomorrow.
Have a good weekend

It looks like you managed to get it bright enough on stream, my problem was always how dark my TV was after splitting the signal to my cap card (a big reason why my statue/jungle pr's aren't great today)

Looks good enough to me as well, however the problem does sound like it could be the common NTSC_M brightness issue which can be fixed by selecting NTSC_M_J instead.

I'm not familiar with that capture device but you can try opening the capture software and go to options/settings/device settings and look for something like video input where you might be able to select it.

Yeah I've fiddled a bit with the brightness, now there's only the issue of the sound that seems to cut off every once in a while. I'll look into that next since that's something that affects the stream quality more than the "proof" Since that's mroe immediate :P

Thanks for the feedback guys
