What university degree do you have / or are graduating with?
« on: March 24, 2017, 10:40:45 am »
Talking about bachelors degree just to clarify. Also, apologies if a thread like this already exists. Unlike some Eliters I'm not that autistic to remember every single thread/poll made in Elite existence, so..

anyways, vote! Why isn't the poll filled with proper options? Because it'd be too broad and the main point is to get a number on how many comp science graduates we have here. :nesquik:

Wouldn't recommend it to my future children, maybe a two year degree. My degree has gotten me opportunities though at least.

Man, I'm jealous of Americans who can get 2 year degrees.  Nutty.

Average degree in Canada probably costs around 45 million?

I applied to University of Waterloo in 2013. Retired from checking their site again after I figured tuition cost alone would be $50k CAD.

Currently working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Sports Science. About 8 courses away. Intend on using it to attempt to get into a Physical Therapy program through the United States military.

I've been churning and burning with this for the past three years and the going has been slow. Working 50 hours/week, military requirements, wife, 3 (soon to be 4) kids, constantly moving, etc. Needless to say, the journey has been quite interesting and, for above reasons, EXTREMELY challenging. It gets quite ridiculous trying to take more than one course at a time. There simply isn't enough time in the day or enough brain capacity in my head to maintain normal functionality and trying to take two classes at once.

For the one or two people that perhaps have ever wondered, said responsibilities are the main reason I don't speedrun anymore. I stay, for the most part, fairly optimistic for achieving my goals, but I know that the load is great and if school, physical health, selfish needs (GE, board activity, movie watching, etc) die out somewhere along the way, it will be ok.

Best wishes to all who are striving towards their goals! Keep pushing! 👊🏽

Never did the university thing. College was my go-to for the hands-on approach and viability of my interests.

Have a certificate in Preparatory Music (1 year), an Advanced Diploma in Applied Music (Jazz Performance [3 years]), soon graduating with a College diploma in Protection, Security & Investigation (fast-tracked 2 years), and moving forward and getting a Post-graduate Certificate in Advanced Security Management (1 year).

Gonna be a bit of an ass  :nesquik:

Got a degree in Math, was unhappy I would pretty much work in academia indefinitely

What position do mean by this? Because tenured (research) uni positions are very hard to get, even more so in math than in other fields. It's not a job one just reluctantly accepts, but much rather the jackpot for most applicants (after years of temporary postdoc positions, relocation, and insane publication stress a.k.a. the rat race).

BS Math  didn't get a job out of it so it's the dumbest thing I've done with my life so far.

There should be plenty of job opportunities with a solid math degree if you have other important basic skills (organizational, social, flexibility about field of work, language, IT, maybe some commerce or engineering) and some willingness to commute/relocate. Maybe bring those up to snuff instead of blaming your college :p Almost no math (or other theoretical field) graduate in industry works with just the tools and skills from college.

My 2 cents @ OHMSS, I don't think you got your higher education in the US things are little different here with regards to employability given particular degrees. You can get hired somewhere interesting with a math degree but unless you focused in stats or something in the relm of applied math your options will bit a little more limited. If you have the intention of getting a computer engineering job having a CS degree is quite beneficial since recruiters look at CS degrees as must haves lots of the time since there is so much competition.

Furthermore getting into academics isn't for everyone and even though it is prestigious and difficult some do not like process and politics that go with it. I would say academia is for those who are passionate about discovery and the fields they specialize in, not necessarily in it for the day-to-day problem solving and pragmatism you might see in industry for example (there are exceptions of course, but what I say is generally true).

Wodahs kind of hit the nail on the head; I'm just trying to support my family, I don't care about new frontiers on my field - as long as I'm happy with what I come home to, I can deal with whatever I'm doing.
The university I went to is known for research grants and we're very close to a large army base that grants hundreds of millions in contracts a year, it's not that hard for us to get a research job in academia (compared to elsewhere I assume), and Comp Sci is much more fun for me than applied math.

BS, majored in Biology and "Molecular Biology and Genetics". Nearly done with my masters which was basically being God and killing tonnes of plants in new and interesting ways. Half the work is amazing (theorycrafting, researching, troubleshooting and just learning about life) and half is fucking shit (labelling hundreds of tubes/everything, planting hundreds of plants, collecting seeds etc etc).

Tyler & Wodahs, I liked your posts about academia vs. industry. But I'm well aware of this and it's not what I was addressing. I was picking on Tyler's initial post because to me it sounded a bit like "I was unhappy with my math bachelor's because I don't care to take up a research professorship" which would be similar to saying "I was unhappy with my business degree because I don't care to serve on the board of major companies". But with a big institution nearby with lots of stable, well-funded projects that post now makes perfect sense :) Wouldn't call this mode outright academia though.

Wow I didn't know the IT job market was so competitive in the US. But makes sense when 21yo people compete for >100k$ jobs like in Silicon Valley. Specific training is more important at a young age I believe, hence no love for an off-degree. Where I come from, every turd with lousy Java skills gets recruited even without a degree, but those people won't get more than a low-tier UI programming job for 30k$ at age 26+.

When you're discussing salaries right out of college you need to take Cost of Living into consideration. $100k in Silicon Valley would be barely scraping by. $100k in Arkansas is living very well. Also, some of the major companies you think would be good to work for right out of college (Google, Amazon, Microsoft) on the west coast will give you a compensation package of 180k+ per year but your work/life balance is completely gone and you're only going to stay about 2 years before burning out and finding something else. At least your resume looks good and your student loans are paid off at that point.
